Things about bordergates...

When you get a bordergate, should I use some troops to guard them or should I leave them alone? This has bugged me for a while...

Depends on what is behind it, if you're strong enough why not go through it and take everything? All depends on the situation.

Well they always come with keymaster tents, you get the keymaster tent and then you can pass through in most heroes games once you pass through them they disappear allowing anyone passage through them meaning that if you dont want other heroes getting the resources from that area, you should probably guard it. However in Armageddon's Blade i believe they don't disappear once you pass through them, so a garrison may be advisable there if there is a lot of stuff behind them that you can't collect because of high level creatures, or if you don't want them to pass into that area of the map.

I think that by border gate he is referring to the garrisons.

Garrisons are useful to some degree. Sending a large armada to the garrison will dissuade anybody trying to siege you. It can also keep you out from battle between two guys so you don't end up being the battlefield. Also, if you want the resources behind a garrison in your lands, posting a guard will let you get to them first. They're quite useful in some degrees.

Mostly garrisons are useless.

If you leave only a few troops even scouts can magic arrow their way throught them and if you leave more then your main has that much less troops.(Not to mention that enemy's main will have nice time finishing your army without you even being there.)

Better to leave a hero with those troops if you feel it's absolutely necessary. (which it isn't)

Mainly garrisons are good if you have them as zone guards because there can be more than one creature type.(if you are making a map)

Generally I leave one unit (a less useful one) to see what the hero's army is like.  Sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn't (scouts bleh), but it's 1 creature.  Worth the risk

Are garrisons useful if you are sure that your opponet doesn't see anything from the other side and so keeping info about your castle safe?

Garrisons are very useful if next to your town. Although you don't get the extra defenses, it stops the enemy from taking the resource-producing sites. Although what is useful with the garrison is not exactly it, but rather the place it is in, as usually nothing can go around without spending a significant amount of movement points, so, I leave a hero in that spot. Being near to your town means you can replenish troops when needed.

Well, in WoG, garrisons are strong, they have traps, mines, a big handicap to it's defender, but I think we are talking about normal ones. Ever played the map Warlords? It has garrisons near your town, so if I play it, I should put my troops to garrisons right? What portion in % should be in town and what in garrison?

Edited by Andrelvis at 00:59, 13 Feb 2008.

Just to note I'm not a very experienced HoMM III player, although I have played it for a long time. But I would keep in the garrison about 10-25%, because when your main hero is around travelling, the garrison hero can resupply with the new troops that become available each week.

EDIT: I've just taken a look at the Warlords map, and it doesn't seem a good idea to leave your hero at the first garrison next to town as it would still leave many resource producing sites vulnerable. Maybe best would be that, after you conquer the other town in your island, or if you are allied to that town, that you occupy the garrisons inbetween your island and the other islands.

hmm i never played multiplayer but i'd imagine you cant get too complacent with the border gates, as people can dimension door, fly, and maybe even water walk their way around them.

On Warlords, there is a close opponent, and very long roads to the other 6 opponents. Ressources are outside the garrisons.

On this map there is no need to put one single unit into the garrison. Rush the opponent that is close, and then defend with your main vs. the others.

Note: Player 1 can reach his opponent, while he is gathering ressources/mines in the starting area, if going for him immediately. There is a spot, where you can block the road, so he can't reach his castle. Do this, bring everything you have, take the almost empty castle next turn, and build citadel. He can never take the castle back, nor will he get yours before you have reinforcements. Much better, than leaving creatures in the garrison

I think that it's needless to left an army in a garrison.
If your enemy really want's trough the garrison then he will attack with an army of which he knows that he will win. And left a part of your army in the garrison means that you'll have to split up your army which means it becomes weaker.
