Faction Powers

I got this idea from Battle for Middle Earth and decided it could actually work quite nicely.

The idea I am bringing up is faction powers. Now I know BFME is an RTS and HOMM is turn based. But what if every experience point your hero collected also contribute to the "Powers" experience?

For those of you unfamiliar with the idea of powers here is how it works. You collect Power Points and use them to purchase Powers which you can then activate during the game. Powers would be seperated into three tiers for early, middle and late game. I will post an example for Haven faction and if this is a favored idea, we can come up with the rest.

Haven:

Tier 1: All Powers Cost 5PP (One PP = 10000 EXP) and take one week to recharge

Inspiration: The Hero gains 200 movment points and all creatures involved in battle gain +1 speed for allies for one day.

Training: All Heroes gain +2 ATK and DEF (Passive).

Prosperity: A selected town provides double income on the next day.

Tier 2: All Powers Cost 15 PP; require at least 2 Tier 1 for 1, all Tier 1 for both; recharge every 10 days

Guidance: All Heroes gain +2 Morale (Passive).

Lumination: Can be used in battle. Dispels all negative effects from all creatures once per battle.

Tier 3: Costs 30 PP, requires all other powers; Recharges once per three weeks

Reverence: Increases the ATK and DEF of all creatures in battle by 10, their Morale becomes positive and and adds +2, their Health is increased by 5 and all mana in casters is regenerated. Works for 30 turns.

i like the idea. i think another power should be summoning creatures. for haven another teir three power could be getting 250 extra archers in the next battle. or you could summon one super unit like the azure dragon in h3.

There is a lot of room for creativity. I just provided a basic explanation. In the end, I think there ought to be five tiers, and the with the following rehcarge rates:

Tier 1 3 Days (Weak powers-none are passive)
Tier 2 1 Week
Tier 3 2 Weeks
Tier 4: 3 Weeks
Tier 5 1 Month (obviously very useful if only once a month)

I like this idea. Im playing BFME 2 and the Witch King right now.
Some elements like these powers seems to fit in nicely with both TBS and RTS.

I'm not sure if this would add much to the game... I don't think there is much reason to have that kind of power as an extra-magic thing. There would be no explanation for it in the HoMM universe as well.

Short reply: Not in a million years in heroes. Heroes have special combat abilities already and I think that with time heroes will gain something according to their levels. BUT I discard the idea just because I'd approve of it 500+% in the campaigns... Now THAT would be lovely ;D

An interesting idea. Anyway, if this is to be used in the game, then I think all the structure and strategy that involves batlle and the other features would have to be revisited or maybe changed, i mean, of course everyone knows this is necessary, but it would add something new so the game would get even more complicated in means of planning how to play it. It's a shot, certainly, they should try it.

There are certain things that I understand could cause doubt. In the next few sentences, I hope to purge all doubt about this idea.

Firstly, I think Heroes in H5 were allowed a bit too muc freedom. The primary stats are fine, but the vastnes of the abilities allowed for combinations making extremely powerful Heroes. Instead, I think the hero abilities should be made a little weaker and these "Powers" which belong to the Empire as a whole should be made stronger.

Second, the Tier 1 Powers are not overly powerful, the ones I originally posted would be Tier 2 or 3. The vast amount of EXP needed which IS attainable would make Tier 5 powers late, if ever, present. And in the late game, the winner is already decided anyway, so it makes a late game that much more fun.

Third, these are not deciders of fate. These are meant to assist, not to prevail. I don't know how much of you have BFME experience but the only time a Tier 4 power lets you win is if you're winning already. If both players have basically equal armies, Tier 5 powers will be a huge help, but will not win the game for you.

Fourth, the story behind these powers would be that they are bonuses the Empire could provide. While Wizards could have more fancy powers like summoning creatures in battle and such, Haven Knights would stick to training units, inspiring morale etc.

If you have any other doubts, I will try to cleanse them. I realize it's a little akward, but this is something that I could really see becoming a reality.

I'm with you. We should aways try something new and of course, relevant, as you said this is an open game and it could easily support your idea with proper changes, in BFME at least I think so, powers are not there to decide who wins, as any feature in the game, they are meant to help (for example, Balrog's breath may be powerful but the creature itself is weak and last a short time, and besides you can counterstrike him with one of you powers as well).

And what you said about factions having different powers is great, cause it will make factions even more specialized and will contribute for each one's own characteristics and meanings, that is, the wizards will show themselves as wizards more than ever, the same for elves etc).

You definetly posted some good new features for the game. That's the way to do it. thx

I would sooner like to think of this as a racial skill rather than an ability available to every faction. It may seem fun but I think it would only further overcomplicate the game, and give more unnecessary bonusses.

Racial skills get boring. In my gaming experience, the more combinations you have to choose from, the more fun it is. With limitations of course. It would be absued to have Heroes, Towns, Mines, Creatures and the Empire leveling up.

But what this generally is is level ups for your empire as a whole. How often do you find yourself needing another hero in the late game but can only do so little? I don't think powers would overcomplicate this game too much.

Well, it could work well, if nicely done. I dislike the PP thing, however. It might be better to have permanent powers, working kind of like the "National Ideas" from Europa Universalis III. They could be acquirable by just adding the total of town levels throughout the realm, and, depending on the level, a higher tier power could be gotten.

Moonlith: The game is far from being complicated as it is, maybe adding some other factors would enhance the game.

I like the PP because it is a balanced way to make sure no character has to many powers. Assume that Tier 1 powers cost 1 PP. At 10000 EXP/PP, you'd need to go through almost every battle in your vicinity just to get a tier one power. With one tier one power, the early game could be made easier, but not before you went through a fair share of ordeals. The next ordeals however could not be averted using Tier 1 powers, and you will need to advance to higher Tiers to keep up!

Obviously a player with Tier 5 powers is at an advantage, but isn't that just like an enemy hero LV 20 versing you when you're LV 15?
