Collation of possible HoMM6 races / town types

I'm trying to compile a list of possible races for the next installment of the series. It's supposed to be fairly specific, but not too much so. I think I've got most of them, but no doubt there are some quite important ones that I've missed, and also not-so-important ones that I've included - suggestions welcome, although don't forget that very obscure town types will be left off. (Good categorisation is a bit difficult.)

Nature towns

Elves
Dwarves
Humans
Centaurs
Faeries
Elementals etc. (Conflux...)
Beasts

Stronghold / barbarian towns

Orcs
Centaurs
Humans
Beasts

Dungeon towns

Humans
Elves ("Dark")
Faceless
Beasts

Swamp towns

Gnolls
Lizardmen
Naga
Beasts

Necropolis towns

Standard `mix`
Vampires

Other Human towns

Haven-like
Nomads
Pirates / Rogues
`Futuristic` / inventors
Wizards and constructs / `summoneds`
Dragon Knights
`Asian`-themed (Ninja, Samurai etc.)

Other races

Demons
Non-swamp Naga
Underground Dwarves
Overground Dwarves
Water Elves
Werewolves
Genies
Gnomes
Minotaurs
Insectoids
Trolls
Ogres
Avians
`Mindflayers`
Leonin
Egyptian mythology
Centaurs (other)

Of course, many of the types have good and evil variations.

I would be quite happy if they could deliver just all the old towns (including the bog Fortress and the elemental Conflux).

New inclusions that would be worth it perhaps the Avians. Some other ideas around a pretty nice too, although I still prefer having all the already-made ones.

This list can become endless, since every creature (usually beast creatures) out of a town can be a race. The question it when it makes sense and it's intresting, and when it's already pointless and boring to see different variation of the same creature.
Remember that the Elves were a single creature of the Rampart and the Sorceress town on H3, 2 and 1, just like the Dwarves.
If doing that is a good step or not, that's mostly a matter of opinion. One would like to see many different creatures on one town, and one can take one of the creatures on the town and to create a whole new race using its concept, and even making it fun and intresting.
If you make a list of all the creatures on HOMM, you will see that most of them can be used as races. But still, would you like that?
I think that when you suggest races, think about the variety that each race would have, and think if it might be better to see the creature as a single unit on a town.

Any town can come out good, but it's dependent on the variety you can get out of the concept.
If you find 7 creatures for the fishmen race, which are different than each other, but still, have things in common that make them to a faction, your race choise is good enough.

If we had two choices of dwellings for each of the seven tiers, it would be interesting to have this many dark elves in Dungeon, for example. But as it is, they are just kind of blocking the way of more interesting creatures, like Troglodytes, Manticores and Beholders...

If I get round to using these for what I intended, I shall probably cut out one or two of the more unusual ones, leaving the standard HoMM towns, a few unused but obvious ones, and some Ashan-`specific` ones like the Naga. I just need to check I've got all the obvious ones.

@GL: thanks for the feedback. For you, which creatures do you think could create the biggest variation? I've always felt that the Naga would probably end up fairly limited (maybe Fortress-like) in its line-up...

Nagas:
The main reason I would like to see Nagas on HOMM6 is the simple fact that water-based faction is missing in Heroes. Underwater town just sounds so enjoyable and cool, no matter in what shape it comes. The best option would be with a kind of an interesting race, and Nagas are just perfect for it. Adding to them some mythological water creatures (and believe me - there are a lot of good ones), so there will be in the town a lot of beast creatures (not to many, something like in the H5 Sylvan), and you can get a perfect water faction.
Can work

Humans:
The human Knights are just too classic to give up them. They are inside the core of Heroes and the gave wouldn't be the same without them. Eventhough you might find lack of variety and repetetive units among them, they are a bit different at every version of heroes, if it's about the design, the abilities or anything else. I want to see how will they be on H6.
Can work

Dwarves:
That part of H5 was a nice step of the manufacturers, but I wouldn't like to see that again, because there's not so much variety about the Dwarves. It was nice to see them as a snow faction, but it got boring after a while. They were great as an attempt, just for a single shot, but another version of them on H6 would be just too much of them.
Won't work

Demons:
I think that basing the Inferno town on the race of the Demons is a great step. It gives this faction, that has been quite messy until H5, a clear frame, not just a town of Infernal creatures.
Can work

Vampires:
I've heard about the idea of Vampiric faction, but eventually, it comes out pretty much like Necropolis, without all the Interesting famous Undead creatures. I have to admit, for Necropolis faction, I like the triditional mix of undead units the best. I wouldn't like to have a race of Zombies, of Skeletones, and the Vampires are included in that.
Won't work

Wizards:
I'll say it as simply as possible: so far, we have never had a Wizards' faction. It has always been a mix of weird creatures, that the god knows how they are related to each other, but somehow, they are all controlled by the wizards, which represent a single unit in the faction. Makes any sense? No. But I still like to play with it, and it's still a very intresting faction. It would be great if they atleast tried to make a normal Wizards' faction for once, that's what I would be glad to see on HOMM6.
Can work, but certainly not as they are now.

Faceless:
A creepy faction of these strange creatures would be perfect, in my opinion, to be put in the Dungeon. It would be something like H3 Dungeon, but with a clear concept and a race that the faction would be based on. That would make sense and will be enoyable and interesting to play with. The Faceless can have so many original abilities and skills, so using it would be a great step.
Can work

I have to go now, but I'll do the rest later.

Nonsense. Although a lot of fans think the Heroes 5 Fortress was not very succesful, that's no reason at all a Dwarf faction could not work. Saying that the Dwarf units are all too similar is plain old-fashioned nonsense to me, you can perfectly well have a defensive unit (like Shieldguard), an offensive unit (Berserker style, or more plain axe-man), a priest unit (like Rune Priest) and a ranged unit (like Skirmisher), and they would all be perfectly valid and completely onlike each other.

Agreed then to skip the ill-conceived mounted ones not to mention the giant dwarves (duh!) known as Thanes, but there are plenty of creatures to fill the ranks instead - keep the Bears, add Efreet to go with the fire theme of the dragons, or go for Thunderbird to match the snowie theme, Mammoths could join their ranks - loose your imagination, it's not THAT hard to come up with something, and there is more than plenty to make a perfectly well-functioning faction.

Halflings cannot be a race, in my opinion. They don't have a large enough variety of creatures.

I don't believe GL's opinion on the Dwarves is nonsense.  Casting game mechanics aside in favour of design, I certainly don't want to see six tiers full of Dwarves and some uninspired Dragon in Heroes VI.  There is no sense in that, this is a fantasy game and throwing in random Dwarves for the hell of it ("Harpooner"?  "Stone Defender?") kills the faction's mythological significance.

I realise the developers may have been going for a second "racial" faction ala the Haven, but it doesn't wash with me.  Think about it for two seconds and wonder just how exactly so many Dwarves are born to fill up hundreds of individual units worth of tiers when their women are apparently so few in number...

How about three tiers of dwarves, two tiers of halflings (or gremlins, if the Academy could go for Novice/Acolyte in exactly the same role), a metal golem (golems were clay originally anyway), and a dragon.

Both Tolkien and Pratchett say this is because the difference between male and female dress is almost indistinguishable.
