How come there are no Eastern Theme town?  (Samurais and Ninjas)
Such theme is fairly popular in the western fantasy genre for while now.

And Bugs.

YES! In all their insectoid wonder! I am to understand such lore about creatures bearing the resemblance of insects does exist, and if it doesn't, make it up. Its Heroes, for Vader's sake!

Tried it once, but didn't get anything much to work, but I'll give you an idea of what I got:
Level 1
Conscript ~ cannon fodder
Level 2
Chu-ko-nu ~ basic archer
Level 3
Kitsune Ninetailed Kitsune ~ spellcaster, supportive
Level 4
Horse Archer Mangudai ~ fast archer
Level 5
Samurai Ninja ~ attack infantry
Level 6
Rider Qilin Rider ~ cavalry
Level 7
Serpent Dragon Thunder Dragon ~ heavy spellcaster, offensive

I think the main problem with the Chinese (and by extension, the rest of the far east) is the fact that they've been unified and isolated for so long that their mythology has been reduced to either dragons, gods or spirits. Sure, they have the qilin and the kitsune, but there isn't really that much variation.

I don't believe GL's opinion on the Dwarves is nonsense.  Casting game mechanics aside in favour of design, I certainly don't want to see six tiers full of Dwarves and some uninspired Dragon in Heroes VI.  There is no sense in that, this is a fantasy game and throwing in random Dwarves for the hell of it ("Harpooner"?  "Stone Defender?") kills the faction's mythological significance.

I realise the developers may have been going for a second "racial" faction ala the Haven, but it doesn't wash with me.  Think about it for two seconds and wonder just how exactly so many Dwarves are born to fill up hundreds of individual units worth of tiers when their women are apparently so few in number...

Well that's my point. No-one says there has to be 6 Dwarven units if we want to make a Dwarven town. Just because Nival took that approach (and it didn't work that well) is not the same as saying another approach might not work. And Dwarves is a totally healthy theme in all fantasy settings.

...agreed with alcibiades, IMO dwarves can be great theme (they are standard almost in all fantasy games), they are a race and have a huge variety of creatures (i would like to see: sentinel - could be mechanized creature, geomancer - range/caster like shaman or druid, sapper - explosive specialist i dont know how! and maybe some dwarven avatar or like dwarf godlike something

Alright Alc, but if that's your opinion why call GenieLord's similar belief that there's little to no variety in the Fortress "nonsense"?

Nobody said Dwarves weren't a healthy theme, but there's such thing as overkill.

How about three tiers of dwarves, two tiers of halflings (or gremlins, if the Academy could go for Novice/Acolyte in exactly the same role), a metal golem (golems were clay originally anyway), and a dragon.

Well, eh... maybe not.  I can't see any possible flyers in that lineup apart from the Dragon...

If they were talking about Ashan (yes, I know they weren't), they're wrong there.  We have three Runemage heroes who are clearly female.

To be honest, I was never much a fan of Dwarves. Never the less, if we count the "big" fantasy races, they have always been: Humans, Elves, Dwarves. I know Orcs have become a major thing within the latter years, but traditionally, they were not really a dominating thing. So for me, writing off the Dwarves like that is just wrong.

While I fully agree with you on that note, Alci, one has to wonder to what extend dwarves are actually a fun race to play in Homm.

personally, the only two dwarf units I would imagine to be quite natural is the axe wielding variant and potentially a magic-wielding dwarves. Any others I would squint my eyes at as being unnatural, or not common / specialized enough to appear in a lineup - same with the blade dancer.

Nival should have put more thoughts into the lineup instead of spamming it with poor dwarf concepts.

Oh fine.. guess not one like Bug Samurais...

But to join in the discuession...

Seems Human, Elf, Dwarfs, and Orcs are some of the fundementals of the Fantasy race (pass down from Tolken, furthered by Warhammer and D&D).  Thus its legit to use a Dwarf as theme of faction, but just seem too typical and sterotype.

Few game have tried to break out this mode, which might be an option for Hero's game (thought don't think would be popular).  The Key is to capture the main theme of that race, and tweak it a bit to give it a new face.

Thus Could easily create a new race of Rock people who like to drink, mine, do blacksmith thingie, and focus on stone hard defense.  They won't be Dwarfs, yet something to take place of them.  (similarly you could put cat people as mythic guardian of the forest, or Lizardman as savage tribal barbian out for blood.. etc)

The Point is have to understand what would make new faction work. might said 1) to have a recongizble theme   2) that have a outstanding uniqueness lore/culture and 3) all that should spill over into game play and game play mechanics.  Race become a second factor (atleast in my book.. kinda)

Personally I'm heavily opposed to inventing new races or creatures for HoMM, because I felt like HoMM has always been a game that never bothered with new creatures, and merely COMBINED fantasy creatures into one game.

But that's just me

I would like to see pure energy race like ethereals (spectral, proto dragon, sound elemental...), IMO would be fun; and definetly BUGS like silithids, would be great theme also...

The Eterherals were cool but i cant see them as a Heroes faction.
Silithids/Qiraji/Insectioids would be cool.

I decided to make it shorter. I'll just post all the races that in my opinion, can work as factions. Most of the races were taken out of the list on the master post, and I added a few.

Elves
Dwarves
Humans
Centaurs
Faceless
Sea Nagas
Swamp Nagas
Necropolis
Nomads
Pirates
Wizards
Far east themed
Demons
Insectoids
Trolls OR Ogres (both races on the same game would be too much)
Mindflayers
Celtic mythology
Egyptian mythology
Norse mythology

Actually, there's more than with the Chinese Mythology. I've actually tried developing one and so far have:
Lvl 1
Asp

Lvl 2
Bastet => Anubite

Lvl 3
Scarab or Bedouin (okay, not strictly Egyptian, but near enough)

Lvl 4
Mummy

Lvl 5
Ammut or Wadjet

Lvl 6
Sphinx or Petsuchos

Lvl 7
Phoenix (they were the first ones using it, so they deserve it more than anyone else).
