I'll take it, but I don't promise I'll make it; it depends somewhat on how much I like the idea and how much creativity it inspires. That said, it stands better odds of coming into existence if it's a general suggestion rather than a specific one. EX: "I want a Ghost/Dragon Pokemon" or "I want a Pokemon based off a kangaroo" is more likely than "I want a pokemon of type X, with these base stats, these attacks, and this ability that evolves at this level..."

Well, I found this guy around and I sort of liked the typing... don't care about the moves or the stats, but I would love to see an ice-dragon type around. (And Levitate would be a good ability for them... to get rid of one of their 5 weaknesses...)

Hmm...I would have to do a different design to avoid art theft, you understand. But I can do an Ice/Dragon type no problem. I will note that Ice/Dragon is not natively weak to Ground in the first place however, so are you sure about Levitate? I have something else I've been wanting to put on a normal Pokemon for a while. Want it? (No, you don't get to know what it is in advance. )

Sure, let's do this thing. And I was just hoping for an ice-dragon (I don't like the pic so much anyway, just the type), so no worries about the changes. Do what you need.

Hey Kareeah, I have a new player that is interested in joining, and she wants to know if she can use 5th gen pokemon in her starter list. Would she be able to do so?

New player here posting for interest, I can use all non-5th gens, but I recognized after I'd made up my list that despite having not played the game since Ruby-Sapphire, a significant portion were from gen 5 between choosing the interesting looking ones and avoiding picking already taken stuff.

Also, I send in choice of mon, ability, and that's pretty much it (other than minor concerns/flavor potential details)?

Gen V Pokemon are fine. They just don't appear in the wild in Helnith, since geographically it's closer to the regions of Gen I-IV. I will want a brief explanation for how you got them if your char isn't from Unova to start with, but it doesn't have to be anything crazy; "I got them on vacation" would work.

As for what I need from you:

First, I need a list of the Pokemon you'd like to have (about 10 or so, you can list more if you want), and I tell you which ones are acceptable as your starting team. As a general rule...nothing very rare or very powerful. This means no fossils, starters, pseudo legendaries or of course actual legendaries...nothing a regular run-of-the-mill trainer would have extreme difficulty getting. (You can ask for them to encounter later, naturally, but you can't START with them.) I will also warn against picking anything for its Dream World Ability, as having a DWA makes it rare enough to require a specific OK from me.

Once I get you the revised list, pick four Pokemon from it and let me know which one will be your starter—that one will be a little higher level than the rest.

Beyond that I need basic descriptive things like your character's name, age, eye/hair color, gender, region of origin...that sort of thing.

Once everything is ready I'll add your character's data (and your character's Pokemons' data!) to the CS thread stickied at the top of the page and write you in.

I assume the explanation'll come after I pick the 4 I have on my team from the approved list rather than making an explanation for each one when (also I thought it was going to be 3, 4 gives much more flexibility). Abilities are fine, I weaned out all the pokemon that I could only feasibly use for the dreamworld ability. My main worry is that I'll wind up with a team that requires a whole bunch of stones/alternate evo methods to evolve up.

I'll have it sent in in a short while, as soon as I figure out how to use the pm system here.

And sent. If you didn't get it yet, either there's a delay on the PM I don't know about, or I did it wrong.

Got it. And don't worry about stones; there's mining in this game. I can even add a Mining Kit to your starting gear if you want.

I've no idea what background or items are available, but that could be nice. It'd give me a reason to go to particular places as well. Though surprisingly, I don't have as many pokemon that need evolution via that method as I first thought I would.

I'll add it then, and if you don't want to use it you don't have to. Minigame rules for mining are in the houserule section of the CS thread, here. Second post, about halfway down.

Edit: You are now officially in the game!

Sounds quite fun, though my main issue with the mining game is that I have 'no' idea how it works. I don't have a better idea of what the poffin thing is, but at least that I can just ask/bug other players to help me with. I.... think... the mining game works like so.

Set Example Row

HP (10/10)
123123123123123

I use either the Pick for -1 HP or the Mallet for -2 HP

Pick -1/2 -1 -1/2 on rocks 1-2-3, and then the rocks go down like this.

1   2   3
0.5 1 2.5

If I do it a second time, it will go down to this.

0.5 1 2.5
0   0   2

Rocks 1 and 2 are now revealed, and I have 8 more points to spend on mallet or pick actions. After I do these, then the round is over and I collect what I find.

I'm asking and guessing, because I have no idea what 'either' of the things you reference are, so I'm entirely in the dark. For a bit I thought this would be like mine sweeper, which I'd have loved since I'm good at mine sweeper.

You are correct. I will also add that you only get to keep treasure that is completely uncovered. Also the Mining Kit has built in radar, which you use to find where treasure is buried (as opposed to picking a spot in a cave wall at random and digging away).

The Underground referenced is a Gen IV minigame; here is the Bulbapedia page for it. It is indeed like Minesweeper, except you usually hit the squares more than once and you want to hit the 'mines' rather than avoid them. The format we're using is more like this, for speed and ease of use.

Edit:

Added links to the Underground and Dowsing Machine page to the houserule post.

I think I see. So only some things will have items under them. One question about it-can I wrap around the sides? As in, can I do a pattern of 15-1-2?

Negative; the treasure spots represent a patch of wall, so that would be like hitting two separate corners of a room at the same time.

Also, your Pokemons' stats (and your inventory and current funds) are now in the CS thread (first post, near the bottom).

Now I just need to know the basic stuff, like what constitutes a day in-game so I know how much training or mining I can do in a span. Does it go off a rp scale, or is it more of a '1 week represents 1 day's worth' Where I can spend my money and what I can spend it on, what I can go out to fight or what gyms I can try to defeat, the pokemon I can try to catch and where to meet up with other people so I can flavor training techniques.

A day in-game is twenty-four hours in-game, it doesn't correlate to time in the real world except insofar as time tends to go faster when more people are online to post. I do try to keep everyone somewhat together however.

Training time depends on the level of the Pokemon. It takes an hour per ten levels they have to level them up one level, so training a Pokemon who is level 19 to level 20 takes 1 hour, training a Pokemon who is level 20 to level 21 takes 2 hours. (Pokemon under level 10 take ˝ an hour per level.) You also can't train them more than 3 levels in one day or 5 levels in three days, or bad things happen. (Naturally you can still get level-ups from fights.) There are a couple of situations where you have to succeed an Obedience roll to get them to level up, but you don't have to worry about that at the moment.

Generally you buy things at the Mart, and it's the sort of things you'd expect in a Pokemon game—Potions, Pokeballs, etc. I generally give an exact list for an individual Mart when you visit. Occasionally there are restaurants you can spend money at, Alkar's character went clothes shopping once, and other things come up, too.

Gyms you will encounter as you travel. You can ask about them in-character, but don't worry about them too much as the Pokemon League Challenge hasn't been held in Helnith in about seven years due to the war.

Pokemon are usually fairly specific to an area, but you can ask people around town what's nearby if you're in one, check your Pokedex if you're looking for an area where a particular species is commonly found, or just wander around in the wilderness and see what shows up.

(I'm going to mention it here because it HAS come up before—you can't catch a Pokemon if it's unconscious, just like in the games.)

... let me try asking my question again.

While some of that is useful to know, and some of it I already knew, I was actually trying to ask specific information such as what town do I start in? Do I begin right alongside the other PCs? What marts are there? Am I supposed to choose a location in the region, or do you put me somewhere? What gyms and recent events would I know about?

In other words, I don't have the specific information about where my character begins so I can start.

((New player character introduction, go!))

Lyra:

You arrive in Ceris about 9:30 AM after the boat you took to Helnith managed to run aground during the low tide earlier this morning. The day is turning in to a hot one, but it's early enough still that the temperatures are currently bearable.

The town isn't that busy at the moment, though a number of people are out and about before the afternoon heat sets in. A few trainers—Coordinators if the Accessory Case hanging from one's shoulder are anything to go by—are gathered on the porch of the house in the northeast corner of town ((House #3 on the map)), where a forty-something man is on his knees examining a Cherrim. By the Contest Hall you spot a Ranger in his distinctive red and blue uniform, talking to a brown-haired girl who barely tops five feet; he glances at you suspiciously as you pass. And to the west of town is a fenced in area where you can see a couple trainers and their Pokemon, strolling around or playing together.

You know from the talk on the boat the Contest held here a few days ago was interrupted by an attack from the local villainous group, Team Bandra, and the settlement still bears scars—some building damage, the windows in the Mart smashed and subsequently covered in plastic, the wreck of a helicopter where it looks to have been dragged from a charred spot in the town square...in spite of this most of the people you pass seem reasonably cheerful and approachable.

((Fuchsia rectangle – Contest Hall
Aqua circles – wells
Gold squares – entrance to the Park (think Amity Square)
Dark yellow rectangle – bar. This will be the Battleground equivalent.
White square – Pokemon Center
Gray square – Mart
Blue square – houses

The helicopter isn't marked, but it's just south of the Pokemon Center.))

I already got you started. You aren't starting with the other PCs (they've been in town for a while) but they are all in Ceris at the moment.

Yeah, I thought your post was just handling for other players and not referring to me. That is 'entirely' my bad, and I feel kind of silly. I'm terribly sorry about that.

(as a minor other note, I still find it weird rp wise that you can never catch pokemon when you KO them, but it's more of a 'prevent just KOing everything and dragging them back home' thing, but that's a thing you just have to accept with pokemon in general. )
