Matt and Mina:

((And...0!))

"Shadowed? What's that? Also if this is the pokemon you were looking for it seems as though we're a little late on saving it as it once was. I guess it's better late than never."

"Ah, how to explain..." Nothing bad had happened to her hand so Mina got a little braver and started petting the Pokemon outright. The Mightyena seemed to appreciate this, as its tail started to weakly thump the ground. "Shadowing is like...like a sort of temporary insanity, I suppose. Pokemon that are Shadowed tend to be vicious and won't listen to instructions. I've seen them jump up in power and use completely different attacks when it happens, too." Mina felt what she said next was a little unnecessary, but better overkill than not. "It makes them very dangerous."

"You'll see more of it sooner or later if you stay in Helnith for any length of time," a familiar (to Mina, anyway) western drawl floated in from the dark, "but normally it's from an open rift or Spectral Pokemon attack, not from abuse." The Ranger nodded to Mina. "You know that's a good way to lose your hand."

Mina ducked her head, embarrassed. "Not the most dangerous or reckless thing I've done recently...but yes. Hello, Ranger Wain." Mina pulled her hand back and stood up, feeling introductions were in order. "This is Matt; Mark was stuck in the Pokemon Center because his arm was giving him difficulties." Which was the nicest, least-undignified way Mina could think to word the situation with the Magnemite...

----------------

Mark:

The Magnemite makes a sound almost like alarm as Mark manages to detach it. Hairpins, paper clips, and the clipboard currently attached by metal grabber all clatter to the ground and the batteries in Mark's pocket stop trying to free themselves as the Electric type immediately detaches itself from the wall to chase after Mark. For a Pokemon that speaks in near-monotone it sounds surprisingly upset.

"I think it likes you," says its trainer, Barret. He can't seem to figure out whether he should look worried or amused.

((Regardless you can make it outside with Matt and Mina; you're just going to have a new friend trying to chase after you. ))

Rifts? Spectral pokemon? What on earth is going on in this region!?
"I see, is there any way to remove this affliction? TLC? Medication? And what're we going to do with our little friend here? Shall the pokemon that were stolen be returned? Will they be locked up until further notice? What will be done with...its pokemon?" I say this last bit as I still wasn't sure if the fence was a man or a woman. "If there's any way to  aid you Officer, I'd be glad to help as well as learn more about this region and what's going on. Mina filled me in on what she knew, but I'm sure the police departments are far more informed."

Matt and Mina (and I'll add Mark too):

The Ranger kneels down, then does...something...with his Styler and the fence's Pokeballs while he responds. "Mostly, you need to get them to think about good experiences. Most trainers like to battle with them to wear it away, but that can be dangerous since, as the young lady mentioned, Pokemon that have been completely Shadowed are uncontrollable. Luckily, none of these are." He finishes doing whatever-it-is with the Pokeballs and moves on to the fence, dragging the sleeping cloaked figure into the light. The fence's eyes twitch a little but don't open; on closer examination the fence is female, just very slight, and Mina recognizes her as the girl who'd been out feeding bird Pokemon earlier in the day.

It's about this time that Mark arrives; the Ranger spares him a glance and a nod before getting back to what he was doing. Mina smiles and waves but doesn't interrupt the Ranger, who continues.

"Other trainers and people without Pokemon tend to use Pokemon-specific cologne to help the Pokemon relax. And if you go digging sometimes you'll find old relics left over from the previous war that will speed the process along."

"And I remember one of the Nurse Joys mentioning a Purification Chamber from Orre..." Mina added. "Wait, cologne?" Is that why they were selling perfume up in Ternai? She wanted to kick herself; if she'd know that was what it did, she could have bought some before the town was taken.

"Yes, you'll sometimes see stalls selling it for Pokemon; it's the same thing." The Ranger paused and spoke into his Styler. "Viola that should be three scraped Pokeballs and one suspect; let me know if you get some information on the Pokemon but I'm bringing the suspect in."

A voice from the Styler responds back. "Go right ahead Jon." The lady on the other end of the Styer's line turns very serious. "I've already got enough here for an arrest warrant. Sending to you now..." The Ranger pulls out handcuffs and clicks them into place around the fence's wrists, then stands up dusting his hands with a look of satisfaction on his face.

"Now that that's taken care of..." Ranger Wain scribbles very rapidly on a notepad, occasionally flipping the top sheet over and starting again. "I'll take the scraped Pokeballs with me for now; I happen to know the Mightyena's owner is still in town, but he'll be asleep at this hour and they should all be checked out by Nurse Joy before they go back to their owners in any case." He rips off three sheets and hands one each to Matt, Mark, and Mina. "I need to double-check our records, but if there's a bounty on this person you're each entitled to a share of it. Come find me tomorrow morning and bring those claims forms; Viola and I should have it sorted by then. I'll be in the Pokemon Center lobby tomorrow morning around 9 to give the Mightyena back to his trainer. I believe you three already have my Styler number but that is on there too."

Mark would be completely oblivious to the attraction of the Magnemite as he runs out of the door, already fumbling for Skarmory's pokeball as he calls back to the other trainer, "Great, I love new friends, but this one may be bad for my battery life! And I'm already very, very late!" The young man was in such a rush that he didn't even notice that the magnemite was hell-bent on following him, and he sent out Skarmory, just in case things were already going south by the time he arrived!

So it was fortunate that his entrance, filled with more bravado than the boy had shown at any time in the past, was pretty much without warrant as he slides to a stop next to Mina and Jack, his large steel bird landing beside him and the magnemite (probably) drifting as grumpily as one can drift in his general direction. Clearing his throat a little bit, and seeing just who the fence was, Mark would ask, "I'm... uh... I'm entirely to late, aren't I?" And the wind would go out of his sails entirely.

Having had his dreams of being a hero squashed yet again, Mark would take the slip in a subdued manner, staying silent for the most part as the ranger instructs them further, and waiting until they are alone before sheepishly smiling at Mina. "S-Sorry about the delay... I figured out how to get free, but s-seems I'm a little late..." He mumbles, rubbing at the completely dead shoulder of his robotic limb. Turning his head to Matt, he would add, "Um... thanks for the help."

Waving the young man off while smiling. "It was no big deal, you both helped me out in gusto with those Murkrow earlier after all."
Hearing the Ranger mention bounties made me a bit paranoid. I began to wonder if they kept bounties from ten or more years ago, or if they could tell if someone was assisting a criminal organization willfully or not. Quickly dismissing the thought from my head I handed my reward claim to Mina.
"Here, you might as well hold onto this and head back before Nurse Joy discovers that you pulled a Gastly on her."I said this with a smile referring to when I had him disappear before confronting the fence face to face. "Bellsprout you might as well return now that she's handcuffed, I'm sure Ranger Wain appreciates your assistance but it's deemed no longer relevant."With what sounded like a happy 'I did good!' trill, Bellsprout vanished back into his pokeball."Well, I reckon I should be off to get some shut eye. I'll see you guys around I'm sure!"And with a turn of the heel and wave of the hand I was off, clueless on direction but with a few goals in mind. Stopping Bandra for starters, finding a possible immunity cure for Shadowing, and catching new pokemon!

(OoC: I like how the Ranger's name was "Jon Wain" LOL Took me a while to catch that one)

Mark:

The Magnemite isn't quite fast enough to make it out the door after you, though the introduction of a large Steel type to the area causes both of them to fly towards each other briefly (Magnemite being stopped by the door). But it doesn't last long; shaking his head in amusement Barret recalls the Electric type, and Skarmory shoots forward with the sudden loss of backwards pull.

----------------

Matt, Mark, Mina:

((Thank you, I try. ))

Mina took Matt's slip with more than a little confusion. Why are you giving this to me??? But Matt was right that it was probably best to get back before her absence was noticed. So she wrapped things up with the Ranger and bid Matt goodbye. "See you later!"

To Mark she said, "You're Kirlia didn't come get me, so hopefully that means Nurse Joy didn't come barging in while I was out. Let's go get her," and with that Mina set off for her room window.

((She's your Pokemon Gnomes, so I'll let you decide if she trashed the place while Mina was out. ))

----------------

Matt:

It's now very late ((11PM)) but you had a nap earlier and plenty of excitement. Most of the town didn't, however, so Ceris appears empty—the shops are closed, houses have their interior lights off, even the bar is either closing or closed.

((What would you like to do now? ))

Sneaking back in, limp arm still limp, Mark would guess that they were entering via the first-floor window... since Mina had definitely been on the first floor this entire time.

Once they had entered the room, Mark and Mina would be welcomed to the sight of, not a mess, but immaculate order. Unfortunately, it was an order that only made sense to a hyper-intelligent psychic type, and everything was arranged into piles and stacks according to their color, shape, composition and name (subdividing into titles if necessary).

So while it was a mess, at least it was an organized mess?

Once Mark entered the room, Kirlia would hop off of the pile of folded, white soft things (on the top were blankets, and at the bottom were pillows), the psychic type would walk over to her trainer and gesture at the pile she had just left... somewhere in there was her poke-ball, as she had decided that the white was more dominant than the red or the stripe of black (after all, that white-black greyscale covered ~60% of the ball, and the pokeball had to go somewhere), and Mark would sigh and walk over to the pile. "Do you really need to act out like this when I leave you in the care of a friend?" Her disapprovingly folded arms and curt nod would be response enough.

"It's all right," Mina assured him. At least I'll be able to find everything and nothing looks broken...I'll need to make the bed again if I want to sleep in it though...

On the bright side, Mina noticed something else..."Oh, my Sitrus berries!" The plant had finally produced fruit, because there was a neat little stack of Sitrus berries alongside the rest of them. Mina snagged two and handed them to Mark. "Here's your berry back, and a little interest for letting me borrow it. Now I just need to figure out what to plant next..." And figure out what Kirlia had done with the dirt; the Planter was empty and appeared to have been washed.

After recalling Kirlia (and Skarmory, who Mark had forgotten about and who had been trying to gingerly and silently slide its large metal body through the window with a few disgruntled squarks), Mark would put the berries away and sigh. "If you can't find anything in the morning, tell me and I'll make sure she finds it for you. I wish I could say this isn't going to happen again, but..." It was kind of a common occurrence.

"So anyway, want help making the bed before I go?" He asked, fully detaching his prosthetic limb and sticking it in his pack now that he had a chance to relax. Batteries would be plugged back into the thing later.

And in the morning, Mark spent somewhere close to an hour plugging his batteries back in while Kirlia watched, not helping specifically because her trainer ordered her not to. The care and maintenance of his arm was somewhat a matter of personal pride with Mark, so though it might waste time and cause endless frustration (and cursing that was quite uncharacteristic of the polite, young man), it was something that he would never-the-less do on his own.

Besides, he reasoned with himself, if I can't fix myself when I fall apart, then what use am I, really?

Fiddling with the pokedex I discovered I was heading in a random south-western direction. As the daylight broke over the sea to the east I could see the little town I had wandered from through out the night. My train of thought was fairly distant to those old Team Rocket days and how similar in concept the steroids we made and this new, at least to me, concept of shadowing was. I wondered if Giovanni demanded that the failed experiment be dumped into chasms in far away lands and if one of those ended up as Helnith. I asked the pokedex what sort of pokemon might be found in the current heading that I was taking and if there were any other towns or cities ahead. Then my thoughts went back to Mina and Mark, I wondered where they'd be heading and what they'd do with the reward money they'd obtain for fencing the Fence. One less cretin stealing some poor kids pokemon though! Kinda like how Ash cleaned Jesse & James' clocks' so often that it was something of a laughing stock where Team Rocket wasn't taken very seriously. Finding random berry bushes made for some tasty breakfast and I pocketed some for later after summoning the gang to get their breakfast grub on as well. Hopefully the Pokedex will stop with the spinning "thinking" circle of death and will answer at some point. Darn slow device anyway, must still be wet from my swim in the ocean when the ship sank.

Jack:

You quickly come to the conclusion that Mark and Mina are in bed asleep, so you do the same.

----------------

Matt:

((Almost forgot! ))

While wandering around in the dark, you come across a flyer advertising for special events. The Contest it mentions in the city of Landsedge is several days away yet, but apparently the Contest Hall in Ceris will be hosting a Karaoke Night tomorrow (today, you amend as the time ticks past midnight) evening, 8PM-9PM.

The Pokedex informs you that the mountains to the west commonly contain Mankey, Baltoy and Arkhiti, the coast has the usual Krabby, Wingull, and something called a Biscooti, while Goldeen and Magikarp can be found in a river that cuts across your present course, about five miles southwest of Ceris. North of town are Shinx, Twiggin, Rhyhorn...the ocean to the east seems to have a little more variety in Water Pokemon, and Murkrow are nearly everywhere.

This in mind, you recall from your Rocket days and dimly-remembered prior experience that the Pokedex has a population threshold it uses; Pokemon below a certain population won't show up in a 'dex query; this keeps the network from registering a species as being native just because someone released their Pikachu in an odd place and someone else scanned it. (And, incidentally, it helped prevent poachers and other unsavory types from targeting rare wild Pokemon by looking up their location on someone's Pokedex. Though of course Giovanni had had other sources...) So it's likely that there are other species in those areas too.

((Travel time is 1 mile = ~1/2 hour on foot. Give me a d100 roll for every 10 minutes of active Pokemon searching and every 5 miles of straight travel.))

((You're in pretty barren land right now so nothing terribly exciting but:
+2 Bluk Berries
+1 Razz Berry
+1 Aspear Berry
And a few other wild ones that can't be used for Poffin or anything Pokemon-related ))

----------------

Mina:

After bidding Mark goodnight, Mina grabbed a few Oran berries and fed them to Sandshrew to help the Ground type recover from her injuries. ((-3 Oran berries)) Without her Natu, she was unwilling to try sneaking into the lobby to use the machine, and was running out of energy in any case.

The rest of her waking moments for the day were spent hunting for her sleepwear and getting ready for bed. She finally located the dirt from her planter in the process: it had been (logically if not practically) thrown in the wastepaper basket. Mina managed to scoop most of it back in the planter and buried another Sitrus berry for tomorrow; Natu was going to be in the Center for at least another day, so barring disaster or emergency she wasn't going anywhere for at least that long, and she wanted to stock up on utility berries while things were calm. Hopefully she could get some battling or training in tomorrow...Mina wondered if there were any Coordinators who'd be willing to wager berries on a battle instead of money, so she could get some more variety.

But after she brushed her teeth and put water in the planter, climbed into bed and had some quiet, Mina's thoughts turned to Stripes. Because that had been Misty's Linoone; she was sure of it.

But why? How? Misty was block-headed and reckless to a dangerous extent, but Mina had thought she was loyal to her Pokemon. She was the sort to get them hurt doing something stupid, not the sort to abandon them because they'd lost a battle. And last Mina had heard, Misty was being treated for injuries...

Mina dozed off to troubled dreams.

----------------

Everyone in the Pokemon Center:

The group is awakened around 6AM by a loud beeping and voices outside. Those who care to investigate find there is a large flatbed truck with attached crane outside; a team of burly men and even burlier Machoke are loading the remains of the helicopter onto the truck.

----------------

Mina:

Mina spent her first hour of wakefulness being checked on by the nurse, who (very grudgingly) agreed that she was well enough to leave the Center unsupervised. The nurse also had a Chansey bring in Houndoom's Pokeball (he had stayed in the Pokemon Center healing like he was supposed to and was now fully recovered), and Mina spent the next few minutes petting him and telling him how glad she was to see him.

Feeding her Pokemon came next, and while they ate she got ready for the day and watered the Sitrus, which had just begun to sprout. She was thirsty and her stomach ached, but Mina told herself it was just hunger. Once the Pokemon had eaten she called them all back and went to get her own breakfast—cereal—and set herself up in the lobby to put the contents of her pack in an order that made sense to humans. It was still a half-hour or so before the Ranger arrived to give the little boy his Pokemon back, but Mina wanted to be there when it happened—and in any case Mark or the other trainers they'd met would be able to find her more easily in the lobby than mewed up in her room.

((Last call, any Accessories anyone wants? ))

Admittedly, Mark hadn't been asleep by the time the noise began (his dreams were a little... troubled), and plugging his arm into place, eyes a bit bleary, he would go out to watch the excavation of the wreckage, journal on his lap and his pokemon out beside him. Kirlia and Skarmory would retrieve food for the other pokemon and for Mark as he sat and drew, almost ignoring the rest of the world as he was lost in his own thoughts and simply letting art flow from himself, periodically going around and touching up previous adventures, and otherwise getting the thoughts out of his head.

His art would mostly focus on those dreams, drawing the wreck that was being cleaned up in vivid detail, and the faces of each Bandra grunt that had been in his path. Mina laying on the ground, crumpled and with the grunts above her as faceless forms, and pictures from much, much earlier adventures with other friends dying around him dominated almost seven pages, front to back.

Under each picture he wrote, "I'm sorry."

In the hours he spent drawing, Mark's Kirlia and Lapras would stay beside him, close and comforting as Mark lost himself in his art, not noticing anyone approaching him unless they said his name or made contact with him. Not bothering to hide anything either. He was too tired to care about who saw anymore.

((No doodads for me! Just depression. And mental scarring.))

((... By the way, Mark has watched a lot of people die, in case anyone forgot.))

He went to check on Tentacool, then, assuming everything was moving towards the positive there, he went to do as Mina did. Food for his pokemon, and then for himself. Searching through the fridge, a container of yogurt is found, and claimed. With all his pokemon finished with their food, Jack recalls each one outside of Psyduck. Jack joins Mina in the lobby.

"I got a couple of those water pokemon you suggested I get. Tentacool was pretty bad off with those Murkrow after it, so it's resting up. I also got Psyduck here."

Jack motions toward Psyduck who gives a tilt of its head and a "Psy?"

Matt:

Your travel is mostly very quiet for about two hours. Then you make out faint growls and occasionally the distinctive sound of sparking electricity. Investigating, you discover a pair of Shinx pawing at something in a hole in the ground.

Shinx 1: 51/51
Shinx 2: 54/54

----------------

Mark:

The helicopter removal crew glance at you occasionally but leave you be as long as you're not in the way. It's early so there isn't much traffic, but a steady trickle of bleary-eyed people filter out of the nearby buildings, especially trainers from the Pokemon Center.

----------------

Jack:

After a quick inquiry with the Chansey which takes you to Nurse Joy, the nurse tells you that your new Tentacool is sleeping soundly and should be ready to go some time this evening. The rest of your morning activities proceed without incident. ((...and so you meet up with Mina...))

Mina, Jack:

Mina looked up from her sorting to respond. "Good. I think you're going to find them very helpful." To the Pokemon, she greeted, "Hello Psyduck!"

Normal pleasantries over, Mina shoved her pile of 'rejected' Accessories towards Jack. "Want any of this? I thought I might need them when I grabbed them, and then realized most of it I'm never going to use." Not that she hadn't been more than happy to discard the dress-up-like-an-old-man fake beard plan as being impractical and unlikely to work once she found the cloak.

For her own part, Mina was keeping back some glitter, a few half-empty tubes of Contest dye and some fake fire—the warning labels said not to get the dyes on a wide variety of surface types or they'd leave stains, so Mina figured she'd have much better uses for them than Contests, and the fake fire might make a nice non-flammable light source. She had no use what-so-ever for the glitter, but the sparkliness appealed, so she was hanging on to it anyway.

Jack looked over the items presented and took the ones he thought might be fun. "Thank you!" he said, and then he turned to Psyduck. "I've got the perfect one for you!" A few seconds later, and Psyduck had the beard strapped on. "There. I think I'll call you Grandpa."

((So, nickname Psyduck to Grandpa))
