"You must be the fellow I'm looking for, I believe I have a reward bounty here for you sir." I say while digging out the bounty paper. I pondered on if I should mention the Bandra goons and the phone book I took from them. If I did, I might be viewed as bad as Bandra for stealing personal information, yet if I didn't, other innocent people could get robbed. Decisions, decisions....SighingMight as well hand it over, it likely won't be doing me any good.

Jack, Mark, Mina:

Mina watched Matt go feeling slightly taken aback and wondering if she'd offended him somehow. She was perfectly happy to let Jack distract her with his question.

"I don't mind if Mark doesn't," Mina responded. "We can plan our next moves between songs." Mina was reasonably sure they hadn't broached the whole, 'stolen Pokemon being funneled up into the mountains' information to Jack yet.

----------------

Matt:

"You must be the fellow I'm looking for, I believe I have a reward bounty here for you sir."

The Ranger wipes his hand on a napkin and takes the Form. "I was wondering where you were this morning. I can give you your reward in cash or goods; which would you prefer?"

"I've also found a few items while out in the wilderness. Seems they were dropped by a pair of unwanted guests that were cruising for a bruising. If you'd like them that is."

The Ranger looks more alert at this. "What kind of items are we talking about, and under what circumstances?"

If there's anything else I could assist with, just let me know, being a shipwreck survivor it's not as though I've any particular plans other than trying to pass time.

Looking between the two, Mark would nod and say, "Y-Yeah... talking in between each song would be a good idea. And training together after... uh... after everything is done." Mark would say, brining this point up just in case Mina had forgotten about it since they had talked. Becoming a bit more animated (mostly because of the coffee high), Mark would add, "A-And speaking of! We could probably do a bit of training while practicing our duet!"

"Then I can take that as evidence in case they're ever apprehended and formerly charged. I'll need a witness statement from you, but we can do that in my office while I pick up your reward."

((-Driver's license from Bandra Grunt Kera Lynn Wheatley
- Bandra Grunt's Pocket Phonebook))

Ranger Wain throws a little money on the table and leads you back to the Pokemon Center, then into the back. You pass through the area where the Pokemon must have broken out; the janitorial staff are nearly finished.

A slightly-battered looking Growlithe looks up hopefully when the pair of you enter; it's on a leash tied to the desk, which it strains to the end of, fluffy tail wagging. The Ranger pets it absently as he takes out some paperwork and an eclectic mix of items, setting everything on the desk.

"All yours unless there's something you don't want. Now about that witness statement?"

((We'll just gloss over the paperwork. Your spoils are as follows:

+2,000 PD
Life Orb
Toxic Sludge
2 Ekon Berries
1 Niptir Berry
Dragon Scale
3 Potions
2 Super Potions

If there's anything in there you DON'T want say so, otherwise I'll add everything to your inventory.))

You finish the paperwork in relatively short order, and by the time you're finished the line has shortened and you're able to get your Pokemon healed.

((Ding-ding-ding-a-ling! ))

----------------

Everyone else:

Mina nodded in agreement. "That settles it then." Mina wondered if she should bring up the 'hunt for Pokemon after Karaoke' part too; Jack had already gone Pokemon hunting recently and might want to actually sleep tonight.

The line was edging steadily forward; the three of them were nearly there.

((You guys can keep chatting if you like; but I'm going to move this forward...))

While the three of you talk the line continues to shrink; fairly quickly you're able to get your Pokemon healed.

Having already had his pokemon healed earlier, Mark would wait for the other two to get to the front of the line, and then join them once they started to walk out. Part of him wondered if Jack knew about the stolen pokemon thing going on, but if Mina wasn't saying anything, then... well, Mark wouldn't do so first.

Having rejoined Mina, Mark would say, "Okay, so! We have a few hours... let's get some training in and... um... maybe Kirlia will become strong enough to connect with me! Though, um, just to ask... i-is there a song you would like to sing?" Seems Mark's coffee has not improved his memory, as he has asked this question before.

"Wow, that's quite a lot of stuff, thank you."

Well now that the team's all healed up, I suppose I can head back to the PokeMart and buy more balls... Or sell some of this gear. I guess I've really no idea what to do, suppose I could check the pokedex to see what pokemon are around, or in what direction I might find a good fire type. Seems the team could use a new face.

Mark, Mina:

Mina took a moment to switch out Sandshrew for Magikarp; if they were going to be training she wanted her poor fish to get some practice.

"Okay, so! We have a few hours... let's get some training in and... um... maybe Kirlia will become strong enough to connect with me! Though, um, just to ask... i-is there a song you would like to sing?"

Mina wondered briefly why he thought he wasn't getting along with his Kirlia (they seemed fine together last she'd seen), but decided it was none of her business. "I don't really have a preference; I've never been to one of these before," she reminded. More relevantly while she knew a couple of songs she wouldn't mind singing along with, none of them were duets--she made a note to try and think of something while they trained...

----------------

Matt:

((Stuff added to inventory; let me know if anything looks off. ))

You head to the Mart while you think; it's reasonably busy seeing as it's midday but you're able to peruse the shelves without issue:

((Potion – 300 PD
Super Potion – 700 PD
Antidote – 100 PD
Paralyze Heal – 200 PD
Burn Heal – 250 PD
Full Heal – 600 PD
Repel – 350 PD
Pokeball – 200 PD
Great Ball – 600 PD
Glitter Ball – 600 PD
Glamour Ball – 1200 PD

Beads (Red, Orange, or Yellow) – 35 PD – Contest Accessory. A string of colorful beads.
Smoke (Red, Orange, or Yellow) – 35 PD – Contest Accessory. A packet of pellets that give off colored smoke when wet. Comes with a little plastic dispenser that can be hung off a Pokemon.
Claw (Red, Orange, or Yellow) – 35 PD – Contest Accessory. A set of costume claws with non-toxic adhesive to hold them in place.
Cord (Red, Orange, or Yellow) – 35 PD – Contest Accessory. A finely braided cord.
Fluff (Red, Orange, or Yellow) – 35 PD – Contest Accessory. A wad of cotton-like fluff and a tube of non-toxic adhesive.

Let me know what you're considering selling and I'll let you know what you can get for it.))

Fire types seem to be in short supply in this area except for Wispaferyn in the mountains – some place the map identifies as the 'Shrine of Light' – but it occurs to you there are a number of people in Breeder outfits around town, possibly one of them could have a Fire type they were willing to part with.

----------------

Jack:

You find your Tentacool in a tank of salt water in the back, with some of the other Pokemon that need more than a quick run through the machine. He opens an eye blearily when you enter and lifts a tentacle in weak but sincere enthusiasm when he sees it's you. You can tell he's doing somewhat better, though his jewels are still dull and his body hasn't completely lost the wrinkled, dehydrated look. Nonetheless he seems happy to see you.

I ask as I pull out the Life Orb, Toxic Sludge, and Dragon Scale in my hands. As I ponder what to purchase, probably simple balls and a few healing potions, perhaps a couple full heals' wouldn't hurt either, I await patiently for a response while the clerk gives me a look like I'm some sort of alien for asking "what's a contest?" in such a blunt mannerism.

Matt:

"Erm, excuse me clerk? What on earth are Glamour and Glitter balls?"

The man behind the counter takes a Glitter Ball off the shelf to show you. It's mostly white, a lot like a Premier Ball, but with red and silver 'gems' embedded in the top hemisphere, and the button on the front is a larger gem.

"The Glamour and Glitter balls give your Pokemon a little extra flare – they give their fur that healthy look, and help keep them looking their best. ((They boost Contest stats of the Pokemon inside - note that since this is a 'free' boost it doesn't affect the battling stats.)) You'll also find they add some glitz to the trainer too; see these gems on the top? Those light up when there's a Pokemon inside. The Glitter Ball is about the same strength as your average Pokeball; the Glamour Ball is a little stronger. ((About on par with a Great Ball.))"

" And all that junk in the contest section, what's that all about? "

The shopkeeper chuckles. "Don't let Elder Rashel hear you say that! You can use those to dress your Pokemon up for Contests; different Contest themes call for different colors and styles, so if you're just starting out or don't want to specialize it's good to have some variety."

" What's a contest?"

The shopkeeper definitely looks taken aback, and as he explains it becomes clear why. "Contests are nearly the only reason anyone comes to Ceris! You've never seen one?" After a moment's pause he continues, "Coordinators dress up their Pokemon, groom them, style them, then have them show off their attacks. There's a battling aspect too, but the focus is on style and showmanship. The Contest Hall here hosted one just before the attack," and as he says this you recall the big fancy building in question. No wonder he was giving you odd looks; it was easily the biggest building in Ceris and rather hard to miss.

" Also, would you know the prices of these items?"

The shopkeeper seems to be a little more comfortable with this question; apparently you're not questioning the very fabric of his reality with this query.

"Hmm, these are the sorts of things they give out as prizes at Trainer Hill; very specialized, not much use for the Contest circuit and probably not something I could resell...but this," he taps the Dragon Scale "We do get a lot of Breeders through here; sooner or later one might come through with a Horsea or a Seadra they want to evolve. I'll give you 1050 PD for that if you want to sell, and 100 PD each for the Black Sludge ((I keep calling it Toxic Sludge for some reason; my bad. o.o')) and the Life Orb ((so 1250 PD total for everything))."

"Ah, thank you so much for the information. Where I'm originally from, we didn't have a trend such as contests to show off and be flashy. We primarily battled to see who had the toughest pokemon. 1250 sounds fair, my team's a bit small and I don't quite see any use for poison moves, and dragon types seem rare. Actually, on second thought I'd happily trade those for 2 Great balls, and here's 550 for a Full Heal as well please."

Perhaps another walk to the contest hall is in order. I didn't quite notice anything particularly flashy about a Sandshrew using Rollout and a Cacnea trying to absorb it in a race. Perhaps I'm missing something.

And, while training their pokemon, Mark would make sure to play the song for them using his phone, just so Mina would know what it sounded like before they practiced it. Vocal training crash course #1: Begin!

Matt:

((-Dragon Scale
-Life Orb
-Black Sludge
-550 PD (5,350 remaining)
+2 Great Balls
+1 Full Heal))

You're inside the Contest Hall before you realize your memory was playing tricks on you again; that battle was in the bar, not the Contest Hall, and while you've walked past the latter several times you haven't actually been inside—

--until now.

The inside is very elaborate, rather like an old-fashion theater—the sort where live actors performed plays rather than the kind with a big screen. Large posters decorate the walls, some of them damaged (presumably by the recent attack), depicting famous Coordinators, upcoming Contests (you spy another advertisement apiece for both the Karaoke Night and the Contest in Landsedge), and related things.

The air is also filled with smells, most of them ranging from good to very good, though rarely you get of waft of something burning. Wandering around you find the source without too much trouble; Coordinators of various ages are gathered around what look like giant blenders, occasionally throwing in a Berry and getting out many brightly-colored little buns.

There isn't much else going on inside, though you spot people setting up seating and speakers for the Karaoke Night tonight and a few Coordinators are using the empty stage to practice their techniques—while the attacks they call for are familiar, the forms are not; the Makuhita you're watching has an almost musical beat to its Belly Drum, and the Butterfree's powder-based attacks are making an increasingly colorful mural on the stage floor.

----------------

Mark, Mina:

((How long do you want to train for?))

"Anyway, let's get this started! Because speaking w-with my pokemon telepathically just sounds like a super cool thing to do."

Mina shoots Mark a look as she calls out her Magikarp; the fish Pokemon is incredibly clumsy on land, and Mina begins by working on her flopping in a straight line to work on coordination and strength.

"I didn't know you were psychic!" Mina of course, had missed the entire conversation with Daze.

((During training...))

Musically Mina has a nice alto; it's clear for those who know what to listen for that she's had some choral training—good breath support, a tendency to try to match Mark's voice in the places where the two sing together, good tonal quality for the most part.

But it's also clear it's been a while since she's done it; there are a few places where she seems to think she can hit the note right up until she's on top of it, and then has to cut out awkwardly as she discovers it's too low or too high for her to hit. Or she'll start reaching the end of her range and will jump up or down an octave in the middle of a line. But these issues gradually go away as she gain familiarity with the song; good thing you're practicing...

----------------

Jack:

You find Mark and Mina outside, Mark with his Kirlia and Mina with her Magikarp. Both are singing along with Mark's phone.

Mark would be taken by surprise by that question, and say, "Uh... n-no, actually it's just that if Kirlia becomes strong enough, she c-can link her mind to mine. I mean, if t-that can make me psychic, then cool! I've always wanted to be able to talk with my brain instead of my stupid mouf- mauth- mouth dangit!" From his tone, Mark wasn't just making a joke when he mis-pronounced that word, even if it might have started with a light-hearted tone. "... Life would be a lot easier."

((Later))

Mark had Kirlia practicing her telepathic and telikinetic skills, trying to have her communicate with Magikarp, and also having her lift up the pokemon whenever it seems like the fish pokemon whenever he got stuck. After all... there was only so much flopping one could do before one inevitably flopped into a garbage can or shrubbery.

Mark's own voice was, despite not practicing in a few months, actually almost on-point. While it's obviously been a while since he practiced, his tenor doesn't waver, and this seems like a place where his speech impediment doesn't actually get in the way (shockingly). And so he's able to give her little tips and suggestions while they practiced, always making sure she doesn't push herself too hard (after all, they didn't want to blow out their voices on the practice and warm up!) but also helping her reach the notes easier.

Fortunately for them both, If I Had a Million Dollars is actually quite a simple song vocally, and easy enough to remember once you'd gotten into it. So after an hour or two, they would be able to look up more songs... or talk to Jack. Whichever came first!
