Jack looked over to the punch bowl Mina pointed to. "Can't say I have. Been busy with helping with costumes. I'll go try it out." He then went to get a glass of punch and returned. Still not yet trying it though, he asked Mina, "Why are you trying to figure out why that Pokémon is skittish?"

Nodding"Let's go Taillow, I'm unsure if it's customary to bow when fighting a martial artist like Hitmonlee, but I suppose a Wing Attack shall suffice!" I say with a wink in Hitmonlee's direction.
I should know better than to get arrogant! The thought screamed in my head. How quickly we forget the Bandra goons! Mocked them and got spanked for it! What are you thinking you fool! Mocking a fighting type? It may not just kick the snot out of Taillow, it might kick your butt too! A few beads of sweat slowly crept down my face, this is going to be a tough fight.

Jack, Mark, Mina:

Mina gave Jack a look that clearly conveyed she thought the answer was obvious. "His trainer brought him to a party when he's afraid of his own shadow."

Matt:

Taillow uses Wing Attack!
Hitmonlee is hit for 26 damage!
It's super effective!

Hitmonlee uses Revenge!
Taillow is hit for 189 damage!
Taillow faints!

Your bird Pokemon goes skidding across the ground, mercifully unconscious before she hits it; a trail of blue feathers mark her passage and several observers have to hastily move out of the way. Pellana looks a little taken aback; clearly even she wasn't expecting her Pokemon's attack to hit so hard.

Taillow: 0/54

Hitmonlee: 33/59

"How...." the words were stuck in my throat. I wanted to gasp in shock. I wanted to declare her a cheater. I've never seen such a one sided shot like that before. I was betting on Taillow to take the fighting type down easily, but after being put down with one move.... Would continuing to battle even be worth it? Probably not. Losing looks a bit inevitable at this point, but luck may still be with me. And at this point I'll need a LOT of it. "...alright, sorry Taillow, return. Let's go Weepinbell, Stun Spore!"

"Well there's no reason for the poor little thing to stay miserable. Got any ideas to bring it out of its shell?" Mark didn't seem to be making much progress.

----------------

Matt:

(( >.< ))

Pellana apparantly decides against switching after Taillow's KO; instead she calls for Revenge again.

Your Weepinbell sends out a cloud of yellow powder at the other Pokemon; the Fighting type takes it in the face with scarcely more than a blink...

...so it's a bit strange that his movements don't seem to slow or stutter at all.

Someone in the crowd starts laughing. Your Pokedex beeps out the following tidbit helpfully:

Hitmonlee's Ability Limber protects from Paralysis!

Hitmonlee uses Revenge!
Weepinbell is hit for 33 damage!
It's not very effective...

Taillow: 0/54
Weepinbell: 31/64

Hitmonlee: 33/59

Looking at the poor, terrified little pokemon as it was brought over to the punch bowl, and his pokemon began reacting to the newcomers, Mark would consider just what the other trainer had said. Rubbing at his chin, motors in his arm whizzing slightly as the prosthetic limb rubbed at the peach fuzz that had begun to grow in (it's been way too long since Mark has shaved, after all), he would watch his Lapras cheerfully greet the newcomers, while his Kirlia jealously hid her punch from the nervous ghost and chittered in a warning manner!

Following the two, Mark lifted up his finger to make a suggestion, before suddenly, there was a Jack! "O-Oh... uh... hey there Jack. D-Didn't see you come in..." The nervous boy would say, hand slipping to the back of his head instead while he goes to stand by the punch bowl. Oh dear, he'd taken far too long to think about things, and perhaps the lack of proper sleep was making him more lethargic? Who knew! For now, the young trainer would just let the other two talk about things. Even if his suggestion was, like, the best suggestion of all time!

Kirlia would give her trainer a light pat on the hand to comfort him. Not because he was pouting noticeably... but yeah, Mark was definitely looking a bit glum as he sipped at his punch. Which was, admittedly, quite tasty. Good choice on his part there.

And probably a good idea that it is as well. Being destroyed in such a sound mannerism, I'll have no hopes in prevailing against my inevitable foes."

I scratch my chin in deep thought. Well NOW what do I do? For pity's sake Taillow was KO'ed in a single move! And how on earth did it do so much damage!? Was there a large level difference? It seems I'll have to plan a way to take out more Bandra goons myself. I suppose I should rush back to the Poke Center, I'm sure Nurse Joy will LOVE seeing me there...again....so suddenly...

Jack, Mark, Mina:

The other trainer had to hold the punch cup for his Pokemon, as the latter lacked hands. The timid smile the Pokemon gave vanished as Jack came close and the little creature briefly tried to hide in the teen's shirt.

"Hey, excuse me, but I was wondering what that pokemon was, and why it's hiding there."

Seeing how nervous he was making the Ghost type, Mina spoke up. "Jack, take a step back and let the poor thing breathe; you're scaring it." Having no social skills was fine right up until it wasn't. And I thought I had the tact of a sledgehammer. Actually, given how blunt she'd just been... I guess I do.

The teenager took a step back before Jack could, but answered patiently. "Yoshi here is a Banshy; they're nervous around humans as a rule." He cuddled Yoshi a little and offered the Pokemon the punch again. "Which given the nasty things most people will do to them to get them to evolve, I can't say I blame them." He crouched to set the Banshy back on the floor.

Watching him, Mina noticed Yoshi didn't seem quite as nervous around the other Pokemon as he did around the humans. Still visibly shy, of course, and he gave Kirlia a wide berth after the Psychic type's scolding, but the Banshy timidly answered Lapras in Pokespeech and didn't flinch away when the Water Pokemon bent for a closer look. Seeing this, she finally made up her mind and called out her Pikachu. Mina also sat cross-legged on the floor so she'd look smaller and—she hoped—less threatening.

"Pikachu, that's Yoshi; he's really shy, so I want you to go introduce yourself and see if you can get him to play. But be gentle okay?"

Her Electric type chattered what sounded like agreement and scampered over to say hello.

----------------

Matt:

"Weepinbell return, there's no point in continuing this farce, I concede, congratulations on your victory."

Pellana calls back her Hitmonlee shortly after you recall Weepinbell. She looks...shaken. Almost upset. Oddly, her abrupt victory seems to be harder on her than it was on you.

She runs over to you before she takes off for the Pokemon Center; the crowd is starting to break up a little.

"Here," she hands you a few oddly shaped Berries; some of which you're certain you've never seen before. "Elder Rashel gave them to me to help make my Pokemon tougher. But it turns out I'm not much of a cook..." she trails off awkwardly and for a moment looks embarrassed. "...I'm only going to be in town for another day or two, but if you want a rematch after that, I'll be at Trainer Hill."

She runs off before you can respond.

"Since I lost, I reckon our deal is off. And probably a good idea that it is as well. Being destroyed in such a sound mannerism, I'll have no hopes in prevailing against my inevitable foes."

"Of course not, don't be ridiculous; no trainer wins every battle, every time. The idea is to get a good idea of your overall skill..." he suddenly seems to realize something. "...and you still have no idea who that was, do you?"

((Your spoils, such as they are:
+1 Iapapa Berry
+1 Nomel Berry
+1 Cumbir Berry (Helnith Berry)

Laughing "Of course not. Do I come across as a local to you young man? I'm from.... out of town. Washed ashore a few miles from here when the cruise ship I was on sunk."

I didn't want to reveal too much information. Not that I remember most of it anyway. I opened the pokedex and began questioning what I could make with these random berries Pellana gave me. It seemed quite a bit odd the way she reacted not only in her victory, but the way she dashed off, almost as though she were looking in the past at some sort of traumatic event. Something I can certainly relate too having been in Team Rocket and the sinking of a ship.. Some times I wonder how I make it day to day.

Matt:

Dash facepalms. "And as usual the Moontear Radio Tower glosses over that anything happened at all, so you had no way of finding out. Sorry. Not your fault. I forgot.

Anyway, that," he gestures in the direction of vanished Pellana "was the Ternai Town Gym Leader. Ana survived the attack on her town by Bandra Officer Darrin—he's one of the most dangerous trainers in Team Bandra, second only to Triple B him- or her- self, probably. He killed Tethys even—that used to be one of our Elite Four. Left a big scar in the ground south of Coastmarch in the process, and now Darrin has Acquegon and all the rest of Tethys' Pokemon."

You scan the Berries with your Pokedex, but the information is somewhat lackluster:

Iapapa Berry – This Berry is very big and sour. The juiciness of the pulp accentuates the sourness.

Increases Toughness by 15. Sour. Feel: 25 points.

Nomel Berry – This Berry is quite sour overall, with the sourness especially concentrated at the pointed end.

Increases Coolness by 10 and Toughness by 20. Sour and spicy. Feel: 30 points.

Cumbir Berry – A berry native to the Helnith region. It is commonly eaten raw or pickled.

Increases Smartness by 10 and Toughness by 30. Sour and bitter. Feel: 35 points.

Kwash Berry – A very squashy Berry from the Helnith region. It can be dropped or thrown without bruising its flesh.

Increases Toughness by 20. Sour. Feel: 25 points.

Dash sees what you're doing with the Pokedex and chimes in: "Those are all sour-flavored Berries. I'm guessing she meant for you to make Poffin with them; most Coordinators use sour Poffin to make their Pokemon look tougher, but there are some real health benefits in Poffin that make them actually tougher too. Most of these have other uses though."

((This may go without saying, but being Berries, naturally the effects described are single use.))

He points to each in turn. "This is an Iapapa Berry; they help Pokemon heal, but something about the taste confuses Rock, Ground,  and Steel-type Pokemon. ((Note that it's different from the hand-held games.))

This one is a Cumbir Berry; it'll neutralize temporary Defense loss from attacks like Tail Whip when your Pokemon eats it.

That's a Kwash Berry; if your Pokemon eats it while using an attack that has recoil damage, like Take Down or Submission, they'll be protected from the recoil.

This last one is a Nomel Berry; these are used for Poffin and that's usually all. They're a higher-yield Berry than most types; good to keep around if you want your Pokemon to have something healthy to snack on.

It looks like you don't have the Berry Checker App; I can download it onto your Pokedex if you want."

I suppose you could simply call them pellets. Kind of like....hamsters I guess. I wonder if having cooking knowledge affects Poffin making in a positive or negative mannerism."

Just watching how the little nervous ghost type was handling both human and pokemon contact, Mark would become all the more certain that his idea was amazing and anyone who doubted it was just in denial! He didn't blame them, it was really a rather large river after all, but this suggestion had to be made! That said... well, Mark was a nervous boy, and seeing as the trainer was talking to Jack at the moment, that left Mina, who he needed to talk to at some point tonight anyway!

So, sort of shuffling his way on over, Mark would stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Mina, lean his head over and mumble, "I-I wonder if training with us would h-help Yoshi evolve? Also, I think we might want to go and sign up for our song eventually. Y-You know, this being a formal event and all, got to keep some kind of order to it..."

Matt:

Dash pulls out a cord and links your Pokedexes while he replies.

"They're not Helnith-specific no, but you don't see them much outside of the Contest circuit. Some of the really big Department Stores sell them, like the one in Skybreak City, but most people make their own. Knowing how to cook already won't hurt; some of the flavors cancel others out, and burning or spilling the Poffin will make them less effective...if I'm remembering right, Dry will counter Spicy, Sweet counters Dry, Bitter counters Sweet, Sour counters Bitter, and Spicy counters Sour."

He is briefly interrupted as the Pokedex chimes: Berry Information and Organization Protocol Download Complete!

Dash hands you back your Pokedex. "The big thing to remember is that Pokemon only benefit from Poffin up to a certain point, and their bodies can absorb more of higher-quality Poffin before they reach that point. So you want to give them the best Poffin possible as early as possible. Most Coordinators try to max out at least one area; I'm told it's possible to max out all areas—they call it the 'Recipe for Disaster'—but I'm not sure how to do it myself. I'm guessing you need some rare Berries, or everyone would know how to do it."

----------------

Mark, Jack, Mina:

"I-I wonder if training with us would h-help Yoshi evolve? Also, I think we might want to go and sign up for our song eventually. Y-You know, this being a formal event and all, got to keep some kind of order to it..."

"Let's ask him," Mina agreed, then glanced over where Jack was making his introductions. "...actually, let's go sign up first, and we'll check after Jack's introduced himself.

"People do what? Actually, never mind. I probably don't want to know. Oh, I'm Jack, by the way."

"Travis," said trainer took advantage of his Pokemon's temporary preoccupation to shake hands with Jack. "And that's Yoshi." He nods in the direction of the Banshy, who is tentatively socializing with Mark's Lapras and Mina's Pikachu.

----------------

Mark, Mina:

Mark and Mina found the sign-up sheet without issue; there were already a few names on it and Mina noticed Travis had signed up Yoshi. But while reading through the sheet she realized something...

"...hey...there are two? Wait a minute..." She read further. "Mark, there's competition after the singing...it looks like they play random songs and whoever's up has to sing whatever they play, but there're prizes for whoever manages to sing the most songs in a row without getting eliminated...solo only though, so we'd have to go separately if we want to try it. You make it to the Pokemon Center and back without trouble. Soon afterwards you locate someone willing to be your next opponent.

This trainer you actually recognize from the boat, although it wasn't someone you interacted with much; a disdainful looking teenager in shades and swim trunks who spent most of his time sunbathing and around the ship's pool. Today he's wearing a tanktop, although he's still wearing the swim trunks and the disdainful look. You overhear him bragging airly to a nearby youth about the same age that he'll have no trouble winning against 'some old geezer who couldn't even beat one of the locals of this town out in the sticks', before he sends out a Wingull.

The thoughts raced through my head yet my face betrayed no emotions. A stone cold stare at the perpetrator, that came out of the gates swinging right after I healed my friends at the Center. Poor Taillow must be furious with me, Gastly too. Getting thrashed one fight after the next.... Granted they can't all be won, but regardless... Focus on the task at hand. Looking at both lists with Mina, Mark would blink in surprise as well and scratch at the back of his head. "U-Um... well, I mean... I d-do know more than one song. But... uh... do you think we might have a chance?" Mark had been to a lot of karaoke competitions in the past, but didn't have much in the way of formal training. He hadn't been in choir since his freshman year of highschool, after all! Looking around at their competition, he would shrug and say, "Ah, what the heck? M-Might as well give it a go anyway! ((OoC note, that is in fact a RL song. And unlike If I Had a Million Dollars, the song, its lyrics and the band's name all work perfectly for the pokemon world, so no need to write a poke-parody this time! ))
