Matt:

((Probably should have brought this up before starting the battle...how many Pokemon for this match? You can do up to three.))

The boy urges his Pokemon on, and the Wingull seems confident enough that Mareep looks a little nervous. It swoops down...

Wingull uses Wing Attack!
Mareep is hit for 5 damage!
It's not very effective...

...and largely bounces off Mareep's fleecy coat. Mareep looks really happy at this lack of effect and joyfully zaps the bird Pokemon back.

Mareep uses Thundershock!
Wingull is hit for 89 damage!
It's super effective!
Wingull faints!

The boy gapes as his Pokemon hits the ground, quite fried.

The boy's acquaintance rolls their eyes. "See, Timmy? This is why you don't brag until AFTER the battle is over."

Timmy manages to snap his jaws closed long enough to send out his next Pokemon, a Krabby. This seems to be a curious choice, but thinking back...hmmm, had you every seen him with any non-Water Pokemon?

Mareep: 53/58

Wingull: 0/52
Krabby: 48/48

----------------

Mark:

"Wha? No, we can still do our duet, that comes first; that's not a part of the competition." Mina held up the paper so Mark could see it better. "There's a second part after that; it's solo-only, and they pick the songs at random."

((First part is just everyone get up on stage and sing their song. No competition, just for fun.

Second part is a competition: the DJ plays random songs, everyone takes it in turn to go up and sing. People get eliminated if they do badly, then the remainder go through another round. Repeat until we run out of people, last one standing wins.

In game terms, I'll roll some random number, let's say I roll 3. You then have to make a word that's three letters long out of the first letters of song titles. Example:

Firework (Katy Perry)
Amnesia (Miracle of Sound)
Radioactive (Imagine Dragons)

Spells FAR.

I will subtract points if you reuse song titles, don't use an actual song title or don't spell a real English word. The rules will change slightly for each round – round one will be exactly as stated above, but round two might require you to spell a word that contains the letter A, or spell out a word relating to a particular topic.

You can do the just-for-fun part, the competition part, or both, and you aren't required to do both if you only want to sign up for one.

Prize for part #2 is 1000 PD and a Megaphone, a Microphone, and Earplugs (all held items).))

It looks like it's going to be close, but Timmy's Krabby just barely manages to dig up a screen of mud before Mareep reaches it.

Electricity's power was weakened!

Mareep uses Thundershock!
Krabby is hit for 24 damage!
It's super effective!

"Ah, so they're both... I see now." Jack finally takes a drink of his punch. Either not knowing, or just forgetting about the spicy element, it comes as a bit of a surprise to him. He coughs on the punch and some ends up going up his nose, causing some discomfort there. Using his free hand, he rubs his nose. "Ouch. That hurt. Tastes pretty good, but I was expecting something sweet."

Jack and Mark and Mina:

((I'll give Gnomes some time to chime in before I post more here.))

----------------

Matt:

Dash kneels next to Mareep and feeds her a few Berries, causing her to perk back up after the battle ((HP restored to full)). "I'll come with you and help out," he chimes in. "I'm not an expert by any means, but I can at least help you stir."

The two of you head over to the Contest Hall; you spot Mark, Mina and Jack from the cruise ship in conversation with another trainer in the Karaoke room before locating the giant blenders you'd seen earlier.

Though there are a number of people present most of them aren't using the blenders: instead they're chatting and sipping punch or nibbling on snacks, obviously having wandered out of the Karaoke hall. Dash helps you locate an unused blender that appears to be in working order.

"You said you're new to Poffin, so I'll try and give you a crash course." Dash pats the blender. "A blender this size can manage up to four Berries at a time; mind you don't put in more than that. Smaller blenders exist—they make portable ones that can only manage one Berry at a time—but for serious Poffin making you want big ones like this. Most Contest Halls have them.

We went over flavors earlier but let me know if you need me to repeat anything.

Never put in two of the same kind of Berry; it makes the dough collapse and ruins your Poffin.

As I think I said before, mixing Poffin is like beating egg whites—the more you stir the fluffier the dough gets, and that means you get more Poffin out of a batch. So it pays to blend with a friend or three—in general you can have as many people stirring as the blender can hold Berries.

Be careful not to burn or spill the dough – that will hurt the quality of the Poffin you make, and remember you want your Poffin to be the best possible for the best results.

And...I think that's it. I can look over the Berries you want to use if you want, and I can help stir unless you'd rather try by yourself."

((Poffin making rules reminder:

The time used for Poffin making is calculated as follows:

65 – (1 per person blending) – (number of first guesses correct) = total time in seconds

For each Berry you mix into Poffin, you are required to guess 1 flavor of the resulting Poffin, starting with the highest flavor and going to the lowest, in order. ((EX: You mix an Oran Berry, you have to guess the highest flavor. You mix an Oran Berry with a Hondew Berry, you need to guess the highest and second highest flavors.)) You are required to guess the flavor itself, not the value of the flavor. As the Blenders don't get large enough to allow more than 4 Berries, the most you will ever have to guess is 4 flavors.

You give me all your guesses at once, like so:

1-Berry Poffin:

Highest:
1. Sweet
2. Spicy
3. Sour
4. Bitter
5. Dry

2-Berry Poffin:

Highest:
1. Sweet
2. Spicy
3. Sour
4. Bitter
5. Dry

2nd Highest:
1. Sour
2. Dry
3. Bitter
4. Sweet
5. Spicy

If your first guess is correct, you get a bonus of 1 second per correct first guess per flavor per person (so, two people mixing a total of two Berries can get 4 seconds off their time assuming they both guess correctly for both flavors). If your second or third guess is correct, you receive neither bonus nor penalty. Your fourth guess will accrue a Burn and your fifth guess will accrue two Burns.

You may, but are not required to guess flavors beyond the number required for the Poffin, for a possible boost in time or Spills for wrong guesses (works the same way as normal, but the fourth and fifth wrong guesses accrue Spills rather than Burns). You are also not required to guess all the remaining flavors if you choose to try for a bonus, but your guesses must still be in order from highest to lowest. (IOW: If you're mixing a two-Berry Poffin, and decide to guess a third flavor in addition to the two required, you have to guess the third highest flavor. But you don't HAVE to guess the fourth and fifth highest after that unless you want to.)

If two flavors are tied for a spot, you can guess either of them and it will count as correct.

The Poffin will be ruined (Foul Poffin) if you accrue EITHER 5 Burns, 5 Spills or a combination of 6 total Burns and Spills.))

Coming back just in time to hear Jack's comment about the punch, Mark would stop, glance about to the left and right, and then do his best to sneak over to the punch bowl with his pokemon without being noticed. No one would ever know about his responsibility in this.

Unfortunately, Mark is only really good at planning out pokemon moves it seems, since everyone is literally right next to the punch bowl as it stands. So he isn't exactly sneaking anywhere. Clearing his throat to make sure the other boys know he's there, Mark would try to change the subject back to Yoshi by asking, "U-Um... Hi there, we're back. Uh, do you think that it might help if Yoshi... you know... trained a bit with other pokemon? Help him evolve, that is." He knew only too well that awful feeling of being shy, and Mark did genuinely want to help the little guy out here!

Mark, Jack, and Mina:

"U-Um... Hi there, we're back. Uh, do you think that it might help if Yoshi... you know... trained a bit with other pokemon? Help him evolve, that is."

Travis made a long-suffering face; in the background, Yoshi had climbed up on Lapras' head and the latter was swaying him gently back and forth, to the amusement of both Pokemon.

"Unfortunately I looked into that. There used to be a collector of Dark type Pokemon in Moontear who had a Banshy and a Spireech...anyway, if Yoshi's species has an alternate evolution he can get by level-up, it isn't through level-up alone...or if it is it's at a level on par with most regions' Elite Four. And I've already tried making as good of friends with them as I can manage, and training during the night and the day in case that was the trigger. Maybe they're like Mantyke and need to train with a specific Pokemon...or they have to hold something like Magmar or Happiny..."

(Mina, meanwhile, was looking through her Pokedex to see what some of these species were...and paled a little when she found the evolutionary info on Spireech.

Evolves from Banshy when Shadow Gauge equals 100%...no wonder he wants to find an alternate evolution. Who does that to their Pokemon on purpose?!!)

"...the Fire Stone I found didn't do anything, and the mossy area in Dewdrop Forest that was supposed to help Pokemon evolve didn't work either. We're going to try Poffin before we leave town, and if that doesn't work we'll train in the Icereach Mountains next and pray we can avoid Bandra. After that...I'm running out of things I can try."

"What other Evolutionary Stones have you used?"

"Just the Fire Stone. We've been traveling so much and doing so many other things, they're a little out of my budget right now...especially the rarer ones, like the Dawn and Dusk Stones. I haven't tried any kind of Incense yet either, since Quibir Village fell to Bandra before I thought of it. And there are so many possibilities with held items...I really hope it's not a held item, because if it is we'll never find it."

Travis briefly looked so upset that his Pokemon noticed. Yoshi chirruped something concerned-sounding in Pokespeech from his perch on Lapras' head causing the trainer to smile back reassuringly.

Mina visibly hesitated before offering: "...I have a Water Stone in my pack if you want to try it."

Travis looked taken aback. "...You're sure? If it works you won't get it back."

"I wouldn't have offered if I didn't mean it."

"Okay. Yoshi, come here, this lady has something for you."

Yoshi didn't so much climb down from Lapras' head as flow, his ghostly nature obvious. He looked at Mina curiously as she dug around in her pack and held out the stone.

(Mina's Pikachu immediately leaped up in his place, having apparently decided that the Lapras Head Swing was a fun game and she wanted to try...only to misjudge her grip and go tumbling down Lapras' neck instead.)

Yoshi looked from the stone to his trainer, who nodded. He reached out and touched it.

Nothing happened.

Mina held it steady for a good three minutes, almost getting tripped over by a careless passerby for her trouble. Something should have happened by now. At last she heard Travis sigh and gave it up as a bad job. "Drat. I'm sorry."

"Thank you for trying anyway," Travis said as she put the stone away. Yoshi looked slightly disheartened too, and flowed back to the other Pokemon.

((Congratulations, you have a new side quest! Travis is looking for Banshy's alternate evolution, here are the methods he's already tried:
--Leveling up
--Leveling up with maxed friendship (day)
--Leveling up with maxed friendship (night)
--Leveling up by a Mossy Rock
--Applied Fire Stone
--Applied Water Stone

...and of course anything involving Shadowing won't work, because that's already well-documented as being the method for the known evolutionary form. ))

"You can try mixing one Berry at a time until you think you've gotten the hang of it," Dash responds. "Then when you think you're ready, try two at a time, and so on until you're at the level you want to be. That's how I started out."

He looks over your Berries, and after a moment separates them into two groups. He points to the group on the left.

((Razz, Bluk x2, Nomel)) "These ones have no special effects; if you're going to practice Poffin making use these first. The Razz and the Bluk especially are pretty common and easy to grow lots of quickly, and they'll be easy to replace. Mixing them alone, Bluk tend to make Sweet Poffin and Razz tend to be Dry. Nomel make Poffin that are Spicy and Sour."

He points to the larger group on the right. ((Aspear, Ekon x2, Niptir, Iapapa, Cumbir, Kwash)) "We covered the Iapapa, Cumbir, and Kwash Berries already, but let me know if you need a reminder on those.

This one here is an Aspear Berry; they help a Pokemon recover from being frozen. Probably not something you're going to run into much in Helnith unless you're planning a trip up into the Icereach Mountains, and they're one of the more common utility Berries. They're Sour.

These are Ekon Berries; you don't see them outside of Helnith very often. They can be used to cure most poisons, but they tend to make Pokemon sleepy. They're Sweet and Sour.

This is a Niptir Berry; they're another Berry type you don't see out of Helnith much. Honestly unless you have a Steel type or maybe a Poison type I'd recommend practicing Poffin with this one rather than holding on to it...hang on, I forgot; you have a Weepinbell. Your Weepinbell can eat it but don't give it to any of your other Pokemon if you decide not to use it for Poffin; this one will cure a Pokemon's burns, but it's poisonous. Flavor-wise it's Dry and Bitter.

Something else I will recommend you do if you decide to get serious about Poffin making is taking the Berry types you like to use and growing more yourself. As dry and dead as the region has gotten over the last few years there aren't many places left where you can find Berries in the wild easily, and on top of that there are dozens of different types. So growing your own is the only reliable way to have more of what you want on hand.

That said, there isn't really any good soil around Ceris, but I know there was a class the other day that gave out portable planters—you might see if someone is willing to trade for theirs. That is of course," he adds as he seems to realize he's gone off-topic, "if you decide you want to go further with this. Lots of people find it too much work on top of caring for their Pokemon."

With all the hustle and bustle, it must be getting quite late in the day. More and more people it seemed, were cramming into the building, and the sound of singing could be heard over the murmuring and whispers of the locals.
"Wow she's really good!" could be heard among the music and I could have swore I saw Mina around in the crowd. Perhaps it was a figment of my imagination?
