Blinking at the list of things that have been tried (and failed), Mark would tilt his head slightly and whistle lowly. "... W-Wow... yeah, that's, uh... That's quite the list there." With a shrug, he would add, "Um... well I d-don't have any trade items, but maybe that's what you should try next? I m-mean, maybe it's a distance from the trainer k-kinda thing, emotional or... uh... otherwise?" Well, it was an idea.

Lapras, meanwhile, would find that Pikachu was not the only one demanding rides, as Kirlia had noticed the schenanigans going on, and would make little grabby hands at the paleolithic pokemon. Well, as grabby as one could get with arms that don't have proper fingers. Fortunately there was plenty of room on the large pokemon for the both of them, and Lapras wasn't in any mood to deny them their fun! His neck is a big old slide, his head and back are a jungle gym, and his flippers are... well... flippers! Just in case any small pokemon wanted to be bounced around!

Mark, Mina, Jack:

"You're right; I need to try that. I've been avoiding anyone who has a Graveler or a Machoke in case they're Bandra in disguise, but maybe I can find someone with a Haunter or a Kadabra..." Travis mused.

Yoshi, meanwhile, was resuming play with the other Pokemon and started by climbing up on top of one of Lapras' spikes. Pikachu, seeing him cling with ghostly ease, attempted to imitate him, and just barely managed it with her much more physical form, but with the end result of looking like a giant yellow fluffball with a tail.

By this point a few people had started to take it in turns to get on stage and sing, reminding Mina: "Oh – there was a competition after the free-form Karaoke. They play random songs for the contestants to sing, and there were prizes for the winner – the sign up sheet's over there if you're interested." Mina pointed. Mark, of course, already knew this, as did Travis, who she'd noticed had signed up for the free-form before she and Mark did. But she wasn't sure if Jack knew about it.

Mark, nodding, would watch the pokemon play and call over to them, "H-Hey now! Don't get too excited over there, you're right next to the punch and haven't had baths for, like... two weeks or something... Or ever..." As if realizing he needs to clean his pokemon up someday, Mark would add, "... Well there goes those dreams of being a trainer and contest competitor." Ah well, he didn't have money for that anyway!

And for some reason, this gives Mark an idea and he attempts to snap his prosthetic fingers reflexively (to expected effect). "W-Wait, I was wrong! I actually do have an item that might help evolve our ghosty friend! J-Just got a metal coat from the ranger as a reward, and I'm more than willing to put it to good use here if it helps you guys out." He didn't know what the evolved pokemon's typing would be, but it never hurt to try, right?

Everybody but Matt:

"H-Hey now! Don't get too excited over there, you're right next to the punch and haven't had baths for, like... two weeks or something... Or ever..."

One of the partygoers passing by – a Coordinator by the fancy hairdo and designer clothes – gives Mark a disgusted look and edges away.

"W-Wait, I was wrong! I actually do have an item that might help evolve our ghosty friend! J-Just got a metal coat from the ranger as a reward, and I'm more than willing to put it to good use here if it helps you guys out."

Travis smiles. "Yoshi and I appreciate it; just find us after this is over tonight or some time tomorrow and we'll try it."

"Well let's see here," I say while looking at the map in my pokedex. "Which way would Skybreak city be from here? I wonder what sort of pokemon I might find on my way to it. Or how many people will be out battling other trainers. Not entirely sure if the team will be prepared. I suppose there's no harm in just heading off aimlessly! Oh wait, is that Mina ? Perhaps she'd know the way there... No harm in asking, seems like she's busy at the moment though, reckon I better catch her when she's not preoccupied."

Matt:

((Photobucket has decided to be stupid so no map picture ATM. ))

According to the Pokedex Map, Skybreak City is northeast of your current location of Ceris.  Going cross-country in a straight line it's about seven miles; taking the roads would make it a little more than eleven.

Dash apparently takes you asking out loud to be a question for him, as he answers readily: "It's mostly grasslands between here and there – most of the Pokemon in the area are Twiggin, Rhyhorn, Shinx, sometimes Taillow...I saw a Trapinch once or twice, but you'll need to keep your eyes peeled for those.

I will warn you Skybreak City has tight security—they make everyone who goes in go through a checkpoint and last I heard they were enforcing a curfew. So if you're not already inside the city by curfew, you'll be stuck outside the city until morning." As an afterthought he adds, "And there's usually a line getting in. I like to bring a book.

Also don't battle the Gym Leader there—her name is Cassilda, she trains Spectral types, and her Pokemon are a lot tougher than yours can handle. Trust me on this; if there wasn't a war going on, she'd be a contender for League Champion. She's...also not the nicest of people; there's a fifty-fifty chance she'll let her Pokemon wipe the floor with yours instead of just throwing you out."

((Any last questions you have for him go ahead, otherwise I'll wrap this up.))

Dash chats with you a little longer before bidding you goodbye. "I'll let you catch up with your friend; it's getting late and I need to check on the eggs...good luck with your journey!"

Noticing that look, Mark would wince and pull out his phone so that he can schedule a bath for his pokemon right when he wakes up tomorrow... and probably a wash for his clothes too. He only had one shirt and pair of pants that weren't dirty, bloody or otherwise unclean, and he didn't want to become a frumpy college student yet!

Smiling wide, Mark would nod and glance up at the stage, seeing how far along set up was coming just to notice that the performers were finally getting ready! "Oh crud! Travis, it was great to meet you and Yoshi, but Mina and I need to get warmed up. We'll be sure to find you tomorrow to test a few things up, alright?"

With that, Mark would go to Mina's side and pull out his pokeballs to recall Lapras and Kirlia. Of course, he would wait until everyone had stopped playing on the large aquatic pokemon before suddenly taking away their jungle gym, and he would let Lapras say goodbye to his new little friend, but he really had no time to waste just now on worrying if his pokemon were behaving just now! While it wasn't in a life-or-death situation like he had been with Bandra a few days ago, Mark was still reacting to the dread and stress of knowing he would be performing in front of everyone with the bare minimum preparation, and his mind was running a million miles an hour.

Enough so that he had entirely moved past his nervous stuttering and fallen into the calm he entered when he was in those previously mentioned pokemon battles.

"So Mina, what number are we on the list? Because we really should get warmed up before strolling on up and singing slightly-better-than-average for all these people gathered here today!" His smile hadn't faded for a second when he said this, and now resembled more of a cocky smirk than anything. While his word choice seemed to be a bit grim about their chances, at least he was planning to have fun with it!

Mark, Mina:

Mina followed Mark's example, bidding the others goodbye and recalling Pikachu.

"I think we were about sixth...if you want to warm up we should go now."

Travis paled. "Yoshi and I were up third. Excuse us..."

He scooped up the Ghost type and, with hurried goodbyes all around, took off for back stage. Mina bid Jack goodbye and followed, rather more calmly, with Mark.

((Backstage...))

It was mostly calm back stage; Travis had stepped out with his Pokemon for their performance, and Mark and Mina had located a quiet spot that would let them practice without disturbing whoever was on stage and still keep an eye on their spot in the line. This wasn't as hard as it sounded; heavy curtains muffled the crowd and performers, and loud music from the speakers ensured that while they could tell when someone was performing they couldn't necessarily tell how well they were doing.

Mina's guts were roiling and she kept fighting off bouts of nerves with the savage mental reminder that she'd faced down people who had literally been out to kill her before this...it was only partially working, and she was still a bit paler than normal.

She asked Mark, "Do you want to do some quick exercises first, or—" There was a brief, painful note muffled by the curtains and Mina spared a thought to worry that maybe she had messed something up with the electronics earlier. She mentally apologized to Travis just in case. "—did you want to do a quick run through?"

----------------

Jack, Matt:

Matt arrived just about the time the others took off for their shots on stage, leaving him to make awkward conversation with his former partner-in-cruise ((or not; up to you guys)) while another singer took the stage. After a rousing rendition of "She'll be Comin' Round Mount Chimney When She Comes" the girl took a bow and strolled off, to be replaced by Travis and Yoshi.

It became obvious right from the start that this wasn't going to go well.

It started innocently enough; Travis gently deposited the Ghost type next to the microphone. The little creature was obviously frightened—he reached nervously for his trainer although Travis had only backed away a pace or two. The latter shook his head gently and motioned encouragingly towards the mic. The DJ, watching this with uncertainty and a little impatience, started up the music.

The music goes on for a while—it's an obscure song, unfamiliar, but probably past the point where any vocals were supposed to start. Travis was visibly discouraged. Someone listening carefully could probably make out:

"Come on Yoshi, you can do it!"

Yoshi didn't seem to hear him as the Pokemon's eyes just darted about – crowd on the left, crowd on the right, mic, crowd, crowd, mic, crowd, crowd, mic –

Yoshi's Ghost body had no visible lungs with which to inhale, but the empty ribs expanded anyway. The cape-like construction stiffened, the little Pokemon's mouth opened –

- but he was no longer even glancing at the mic, instead staring terrified at the crowd and all the people in it. And the sound that came out was not a song, but a soul-freezing scream.

"SHYYYYYYY!"

Travis freezes – freezes completely, then falls over, as stiff as stone. So do a large number of people in the audience, as the attack is broadcast through the speakers. Yoshi breaks off and flees the stage.

((Notes for both of you in the roll thread.))

"Do you want to do some quick exercises first, or did you want to do a quick run through?"

Mark didn't think too much about the obvious feedback loop, relatively certain that Travis had just gotten over-confident and looked away from the prompter, while walking around on the stage with the microphone. (Though something seemed off to Mark about that thought; Travis didn't seem careless enough to walk that close to a speaker) Instead, Mark would rub lightly at his chin and then say, "Well, we don't really need to run through the song. Just a quick vocal warm-up to remind yourself that you actually have a good voice and using that to relax would be enough."

Remembering something Mina mentioned (or at least her own inexperience suggested), he would add, "And... uh, just a quick tip, since I'm guessing this is your first time? Worst thing you can do is think that you aren't singing well enough and trying to over-compensate. Especially for a karaoke party, no one is expecting perfection, so don't push yourself too far. Just have fun, don't stress about it!" Ironic, since Mark's sudden clarity is coming from his own reaction to stress. Perhaps it was just his own experience with jumping up and singing at karaoke parties in the past, and his own ways of dealing with that initial jolt of stress? Almost casually, he would look away, shrug and finish with, "Your voice is lovely anyway."

"Wha....what just happened? My head feels.... so groggy..." As well it should, last thing I remembered was hearing Shyyyyyyyyy on the microphone as everything turned black. Nearby a couple laughed and explained what happened, and not to feel bad as I apparently wasn't the only person to black out. Not exactly a way to feel better about it but I digress. As the next singer took the stage. Seeing it was a Jigglypuff, many onlookers quickly covered their ears, myself as well, blacking out once was bad enough, but this was getting a bit ridiculous! I started to wonder whom was booking these events...

Mark and Mina:

"Well, we don't really need to run through the song. Just a quick vocal warm-up to remind yourself that you actually have a good voice and using that to relax would be enough. And... uh, just a quick tip, since I'm guessing this is your first time?"

Mina ignored the accidental innuendo and nodded; she was fairly certain she'd mentioned earlier that she'd never done karaoke before.

"Worst thing you can do is think that you aren't singing well enough and trying to over-compensate. Especially for a karaoke party, no one is expecting perfection, so don't push yourself too far. Just have fun, don't stress about it!"

Mina nodded, putting a little more mental effort into quashing the growing stage fright. The worse that could happen was that she made a fool of herself, and odds were good she'd never see most of the people out there ever again anyway.

Putting it that way made it seem rather bleak, actually...

(Anyway, odds were good she couldn't do worse than the pimply boy who seemed to be in slot number five. That individual apparently had also had the idea to warm up a little before going out on stage, but even with the acoustics back here muffled, his piercing voice sounded like nails on chalkboard.)

"Your voice is lovely anyway."

"Thanks Mark." Mina smiled at him. That had helped a lot. She still felt rather like she'd been punched in the gut, but the edge of her nervousness was dulled. She almost hugged him, but refrained on the basis that might be a little too awkward. "Okay, exercise it is. Stop me if you haven't heard this one."

Mina dug one of the old exercises she'd picked up back in choir class out of mental storage and began to sing.

"Flexibility, flexibility, sing with light and short notes..."

----------------

Matt:

Your body feels stiff and your movements are jerky; every now and then, you feel muscle spasms severe enough to prevent meaningful movement for a few moments. You aren't the only one; a large number of other audience members seem to be similarly affected. But for some reason there aren't very many of those around the punch bowl...

"Thanks Mark." Mina smiled at him.

Glancing back to her, Mark would hide the small blush that came to his cheeks at her smile by glancing up along the line. His focus, and thus his confidence, shaken a little by just how awkward it would be if she noticed or did something like hug him, the boy would scratch at the back of his head and stutter, "Um... y-yeah, don't mention it. Just, uh, advice I was given that h-helped me before..." There. That should totally cover it.

"Okay, exercise it is. Stop me if you haven't heard this one. Flexibility, flexibility, sing with light and short notes..."

Quite honestly, Mark had only heard it once or twice before... but after hearing her go through it once or twice, he would join in the chant, tuning his tenor voice with hers as they went along. They might just be average singers normally, but if they could harmonize then they would sound professional.

Or that was the theory, anyway. It remained to be seen if that panned out, and given just how close they were to the stage, it seems that both of them would discover just how good a pair they were in just a moment! Mark wasn't nervous, not at all! Or at least, he hoped that he wasn't showing it. There was a new stage and sound system, and one or two of the preceding singers must have already been good at this point, and he was too tired to stay in tune, and oh god his shirt was inside-out wasn't it? And... okay, he might be a bit nervous, despite his experience, but he would get over that after a measure or two of the introduction. Another reason why he chose If I had a Million Poke, since it gave him time to settle his nerves with music. Always a good song to start a karaoke night with because of that...

Everyone:

While Matt is dealing with his bout of Pokemon-induced paralysis, Mark and Mina's turn on stage arrives. The two of them are able to notice, even through the glare of stage lights, that a large number of people are on the ground although a moment's observation reassures them that the cause was not serious, as none of the people still standing seem agitated. A few people are making their oddly jerky ways off to the edges of the room out of the way, and there has been a rush for the punch bowl since the two of them went backstage.

"Are we ready?" Mina whispered. Then there isn't much time for anything else, as the music starts up...

((Did you want to try a round of the mini-game with this, or wait until the actual competition?))

Wondering what exactly happened in this place, Mark would lean in and mumble to Mina, "After the last few performances... yeah. We're more ready than anyone else." With that last bit of encouragement, Mark would pick up his own microphone and gesture for Mina to take hers, just letting the intro music play for a moment before adding, "Now let's have some fun, shall we?"

Having perfectly timed his question, Mark would begin singing before anyone could properly answer him. Cheeky little bugger.

Mina had a slightly easier time of it than Mark, as she could take some of her cues from his lines. And maybe it was the acoustics of the stage, but to her own ear they both sounded a good bit better than they had backstage.

Apparently at least a few of the audience agreed, and the pair of them were ambushed by a couple audience members, who gushed about how well they'd sang before pressing a couple bits of Contest Accessories into their hands and running back for the next performance.

((Mark:

"That went well," Mina remarked.

Then she noticed Travis, who was offstage cuddling Yoshi. The latter was crying and seemed upset.

Come to think of it, standing near the door, I don't believe I've seen Dash or Pellana come in. I wonder what those two were doing. Could Pellana still be at the Trainer hill? Spoze there's only one way to find out.

Mark would be a little bit surprised by the reception that they got, not having expected anything like this (it had never happened to him before, after all...), but he would happily accept the gifts and look at Mina with just the biggest of grins. "See! What did I tell you, you were great!"

Seeing the state that Travis and Yoshi were in, on the other hand, made Mark a bit more nervous, and he would stop a little ways away from the two, hand scratching the back of his head while he says, "H-Hey there... uh, didn't go as well as planned, I'm guessing?"
