Mark and Mina:

"It's my fault," Travis responded, hugging the Ghost Pokemon who continued to cry, "I thought—you know how Bagon evolve into a form with wings because they want to fly so much? I thought since Banshy are so afraid of humans, maybe overcoming that fear would let them evolve, and singing on stage seemed like a nice harmless way to do that." Travis pulled out a Grepa Berry, which after another sniffle Yoshi took a bite out of. "I'm sorry, Yoshi."

"Nine miles huh... that's quite a trek, thank you." I reply with a nod of my head as I turn and head outside. The stars twinkled above and thin, whispy clouds drifted lazily on the slight breeze over head. As I pull my fedora lower over my eyes, I smile to myself as I start trekking north east. Eyes darting left and right, I keep them peeled for any random pokemon or late night trainers.

Despite the slow pace, I was hoping to get more of Pellana's story on what's going on.

"Pokedex, care to fill me in on special abilities of the local pokemon so I might be more aware of what to expect? Wouldn't want any more 'limber' surprises like that Hitmonlee had." I wasn't sure what I was shooting for, but at least having the Dex to talk with, least it's more companionship than I had those few days wandering out in the wilderness after the ship sank. Better than nothing!

Matt:

Your Pokedex fills you in on some of the more common species in this part of the region as you travel.

During the day, species like Shinx, Rhyhorn, and Twiggin are common, as are Taillow like the one you'd already caught.

The 'dex informs you that Shinx are Electric type Pokemon and that two Abilities are most common to the species – either they are prone to Rivalry (raises damage dealt if the target of any attacks is the same gender but lowers it if the target is of opposite gender) or they are prone to Intimidate other Pokemon (lowers the Attack of opposing Pokemon by one stage).

Rhyhorn are Rock/Ground Pokemon. They also can have one of two Abilities: Rock Head protects them from taking damage from attacks that would usually harm the user, like Take Down ((attacks that cause recoil damage, in other words)), and Lightning Rod attracts the Electric-type attacks of nearby Pokemon.

Twiggin are a Grass type Pokemon native to Helnith; their species only has one Ability, something called Springy Step – digging further you find this is something called a 'Compound Ability' which is, quite simply, an Ability that has the effects of two other Abilities combined. In this case it's a combination of Run Away (Pokemon can flee regardless of trapping moves or Abilities)  and your old friend Limber (can't be Paralyzed). Reading further you find that some Pokemon species have Compound Abilities naturally while others can obtain them under certain circumstances, such as evolving while holding certain items or—

—your chain of thought is disrupted by a loud sound like a horse's neigh, but higher and harsher...and nearby.

Jack, Mark, Mina:

((You lot let me know if you want a post from me.))

----------------

Matt:

You follow the source of the noise to find a strange Pokemon pawing at the ground and tossing its head at something you can't see. The creature looks like the skeleton of a horse—or rather, half a horse. It has no hind legs, and its skull is topped by a sort of antenna. It's also somewhat transparent; obviously a Ghost type of some kind. The Pokedex identifies it as a Helnith Pokemon called Wythir.

It sees you after a heartbeat or two. It snorts, the sound having an oddly empty quality to it, and paws the ground threateningly.

"A what-here? Pokedex I need better information! Where'd this thing come from? Weaknesses? Abilities? More data required!" I hiss at the pokedex with terror obvious on my face as I back away keeping my eyes glued to the strange creature. I wasn't sure if I was appearing non-threatening or not, but I sure as heck was hoping so!

The Pokedex chirps out an informational blurb: "These Pokemon are said to be the spirits of Pokemon killed in grass fires. They have been known to drown travelers who try to ride them." The 'dex also informs you the Wythir is female, level 17, a pure Ghost type, and has the Ability 'Pyrophobe' – which the Pokedex tells you will cause her Speed to rise if she's in close proximaty to a Fire type Pokemon ((if she's out in battle with one at the same time, in other words)).

But that's what the Pokedex tells you. Your eyes are telling you the Wythir is about to attack, and you should send something out to defend yourself before she goes after you.

Not really much of a therapist, much too awkward and filled with his own problems to really offer meaningful comfort, Mark would mumble, "Uh... well... i-it was worth the shot?" And, knowing that this probably wouldn't help much, he would ask Yoshi, "Hey, do you want to play with Lapras a little bit more, little guy? W-Would you like that?" As he gets out the water/ice type's pokeball and looks for a space large enough to put him down without flattening someone or their pokemon.

This is honestly the best that Mark can do here.

"All right, I guess I've no other choice Miss Wythir, I don't particularly want to fight, but it is what it is I guess. Let's go Mareep, Thundershock it I guess."

What a sad way to go, poor pokemon dieing in a grass fire and becoming some sort of....vengeful spirit pokemon... I wonder what it was before it died? A wave of sorrow and regret swept over me. My past seemed to be, quite literally, haunting me here in the form of this pokemon. Perhaps it recognized me? What a terrifying thought.

Mark and Mina:

Not having any particularly brilliant words of comfort herself, Mina dug a Poffin out of her pack and offered it to Yoshi while Lapras materialized. ((-1 Sweet Poffin; 1 remaining)) "You tried; better to try and fail than to do nothing and complain when nothing happens."

It took a few minutes, but between the Berry, the Poffin and a little bit of play with Lapras, Yoshi seemed to perk up a little.

Seeing as the other two's pokemon were able to make friends with Yoshi earlier, Jack decided to have a go with one of his. He chose and sent out his Psyduck. "Okay, Grandpa. That over there is Yoshi. I'd like you to go over and make friends and play nice with him."

"Hmm no paralyze that time? How about Thunder Wave this time Mareep?" Leer, I don't believe, is that problematic. As long as we can minimize the damage we should be fine. "Pokedex, what are pure ghost types good for and against? Or dare I ask what is effective against them? I've never come across a pure ghost type before."

Everyone but Matt:

Grandpa waddles over as instructed, saying something to the Ghost type in Pokespeak that is presumably an introduction. Yoshi floats over with a quiet chatter of response – then, greatly daring, tugs at the phony beard experimentally. The he gets a look of absolute glee and hides under it, giggling. Lapras plays along, so obviously even the humans can tell he knows exactly where Yoshi is and is pretending not to.

----------------

Matt:

The Pokedex informs you that Ghost type Pokemon are weak to Ghost, Dark, and Spectral type attacks, resistant to Bug and Poison type attacks, and immune to Normal and Fighting type attacks under normal circumstances.

Wythir uses Buck!
Mareep is hit for 26 damage!
Critical hit!

The half-horse strikes deeply, but electricity arcs from Mareep's wool as the Ghost type makes contact.

Wythir is Paralyzed by Static!
It may not be able to attack!

Mareep uses Thunderwave!
Wythir is already Paralyzed!

Mareep: 32/58 (Defense down 1 level)

Wythir: 40/54 (Paralyzed)

"Well that's one way to apply paralysis... Thundershock it." I still feel somewhat conflicted about this whole situation. I wonder if the pokemon died from a wildfire, or if it were caused by people? Is that why it's so hostile now? I scratched my chin and looked over the moves of my remaining pokemon in case Mareep faints. Then a thought occurred to me... perhaps it'd be easier to have a 2 on one beat down? Minimize damage to my pokemon while getting through this encounter faster? Better not push my luck.

You recall Mareep!
You send out Gastly!

The Wythir tries to Buck again, but is struck by a bout of Paralysis. ((The dice are feeling redundant today!))

You use a Great Ball!

((...and between the Paralysis and the Great Ball, no roll necessary. ))

The ball shakes once, twice, thrice and...DING!
Wythir was caught!

Wythir
Type: Ghost
Ability: Pyrophobe
Gender: Female
Level: 17
Held Item: None
Stats—
HP:  54
Attack: 37
Def: 35
Sp. Attack: 32
Sp. Def: 35
Speed: 39
Moves:
Leer
Buck*
Shadow Sneak
Will-O-Wisp
Stomp
Ominous Wind

Would you like to give a nickname to Wythir?

((Regardless, you're at six Pokemon, so once you decide she warps off to Box Storage.

Pyrophobe was covered earlier. Buck requires some explanation:
Buck
Type: Normal (Physical)
Power: 40 (but see text)
Accuracy: 100%
PP: 20 (max 32)
Makes contact: Yes

The user attacks, dealing damage. If the user has any positive or negative stat adjustments, the user will attack again (one additional attack for positive, one for negative, for a possible max of three attacks). After the Pokemon attacks, the stats are reset to level 0. Power for the second and third attacks are based on the HIGHEST levels adjusted only, and are calculated thus:

40 + (10 per stat level)

If the user has more than one stat adjusted positively or negatively, only the highest of each is used and reset. For example:

Wythir has an Attack adjustment of +6 levels, a Defense adjustment of +1 level, and a Speed adjustment of -3 levels.

Wythir uses Buck
Buck hits three times:
40 power on the first hit
100 power on the second hit (40 + (10 * 6 levels))
70 power on the second hit. (40 + (10 * 3 levels))

After the attack, Wythir's stat adjustments are now +1 Defense level and nothing else.

Wythir uses Buck again:
40 power on the first hit
50 power on the second hit
No third hit.

Wythir now has no stat adjustments.

Wythir uses Buck again:
40 power on the first hit.
No second or third hit.))

Mareep: 15/58 (recalled)
Gastly: 48/48

Wythir: 25/54 (caught!)
