"A dark/spectral type huh? I wonder if Helnith has any psychic types. It'd be easier to know what these lil fella's are thinking. Perhaps more convenient to avoiding battles with the hostile ones. But you," I say pointing at the Cosmas, "are kind of like me. Prefer to be left alone, head in the clouds, lost in the stars, just minding your own business. I apologize as it's in my curious nature, being an old scientist, to wonder what you're singing for, I hope you don't mind if I listen." I say as I take a seat on the ground and proceed to watch the Cosmas to see how it reacts. Perhaps it can understand us? If not, it surely can read body language, I'm coming off as non-threatening as I can. I keep my hands folded in front of me and smile as warmly as possible. Though perhaps my efforts are too much and it appears more creepy than anything.

"Well, uh, I'm not entirely sure where to look, so maybe we can stick together. Though, I need to go to the Pokemon Center real quick first. I think I should swap out Lee for a pokemon I caught earlier. It was rummaging around in the dark, so it might be helpful, maybe. Be right back!" Jack runs off to swap out Lee for the Rattata and rushes back.

Mark:

((Okay but if you get to do Dinosaur Laser Fight, I get to do Diggy Diggy Hole. ))

Your first performance nets you more Accessories from a few impressed audience members; a Red Bow and a tube of Yellow Dye.

The first round continues and completes; Mina manages to avoid elimination but a few—including one very tone-deaf blonde in a cowboy hat – do not, and the next round begins.

((Round 2! In addition to spelling out a word of the appropriate length, it must begin with a randomly chosen letter!

Your Karaoke roll is: 4
Your letter is: Y

Remember that these songs have already been used and can't be used again:

Army of the Night - Powerwolf
Run to You - Pentatonix
Over the Rainbow - Judy Garland / Bae Wain
Unknown Soldier - Breaking Benjamin
Nobody's Home - Avril Lavigne
Dinosaur Laser Fight- NSP
Song of Durin - Clamavi De Profundis
Total Eclipse of the Heart – Bonnie Tyler
All as One – Miracle of Sound
New Divide – Linkin Park
Diggy Diggy Hole – Yogscast Lewis & Simon
What I've Done – Linkin Park
Applause – Lady Gaga
The Sound of Silence - Disturbed
E. T. – Katy Perry
Renegades – X Ambassadors
Far Away - Nickelback
Animals – Maroon 5
Lithium - Evanescence
Loser – 3 Doors Down
))

The DJ might be trying to throw you off; your next song is a remix with some parts going in wildly different directions melody-wise from the original, easy to be thrown off by. Fortunately, it's a remix you're quite familiar with; it was a song your friend Alan had tried teaching – more or less successfully - to Jason's Lucario, to the latter's outward annoyance and inward amusement.

----------------

Mina:

Mina's stomach was in knots, a feeling that oddly hadn't gotten better off the stage but was getting worse now that she was about to get back on it. When her turn came up she focused on putting one foot in front of the other and then on the music as it began; she felt a twinge of relief as she recognized the first opening notes, though she suspected she was rather pale regardless.

((Round 1: Same rules as the practice round, but for real this time!

Your Karaoke roll is: 5

Word: Stand
Song of Durin - Clamavi De Profundis
Total Eclipse of the Heart – Bonnie Tyler
All as One – Miracle of Sound
New Divide – Linkin Park
Diggy Diggy Hole – Yogscast Lewis & Simon))

Getting off the stage again didn't bring the sense of relief she'd expected. She was at once tired and full of scathing energy, and she could smell something faintly like blood...she accepted the Blue Feather and the string of Red Beads from some of the audience who'd liked her singing with distracted thanks and waited for her next turn on stage.

((Round 2! In addition to spelling out a word of the appropriate length, it must begin with a randomly chosen letter!

Your Karaoke roll is: 9
Your letter is: W))

Mina was more than a little surprised that her next song ended up being in Latin. She had just enough time to wonder what playlist is this DJ using??? before she had to focus on the song.

What I've Done – Linkin Park
Applause – Lady Gaga
The Sound of Silence - Disturbed
E. T. – Katy Perry
Renegades – X Ambassadors
Far Away - Nickelback
Animals – Maroon 5
Lithium - Evanescence
Loser – 3 Doors Down

Luckily, she did have some choral training, and Latin was popular in the choir songbook. So while she couldn't have said with any certainty what most of the words meant, she could pronounce them reasonably well and any errors she might have made went unrecognized by the crowd. She just had to hope it wasn't something she might regret singing later.

She had a pleasant surprise coming off; one of the people waiting for her when she came off stage was a teenage boy who recognized her as 'that crazy black-haired chick that was battling for Berries' and gave her a Pecha Berry and a Pinap Berry instead of Accessories. Mina was feeling a bit muzzy-headed by this point but she was still managed to recognize that she didn't have one of either variety yet and managed to be sincere in her thanks.

Once she'd gotten free of the crowds, she spared herself a moment to be annoyed; it wasn't that late, she shouldn't be feeling this out of it...and her stomach was still bothering her despite not having had anything particularly strange to eat unless you counted the punch...

A thought occured, hazier than normal but still recognizable. Mina did some mental math and then some mental cursing as the numbers worked themselves out as expected.

----------------

Everyone but Matt:

((11 PM works for me; that's just about the time the latest batch of Sitrus Berries will need water. ))

"Sounds good," Mina replied. Her brain was feeling fuzzier and more incoherant by the moment; while she doubted she'd be good company right now, it would be best if she trailed along with someone out in the wilderness, or her odds of losing track of where she was were much higher.

((Swapping Lee for Rattata noted. Anything else you want to do, post in the next day or so; otherwise I'll start our search. ))

----------------

Matt:

Even in the dark, you can tell the Cosmas is watching you warily; she backs away a few tiny steps—tiny for you, anyway, she's only ten inches* tall—but stops once you sit down, apparently not trusting your intentions but not frightened enough to flee just yet. After a moment or two she starts to sing again, more tentatively this time, and still watching you out of the corner of those enourmous golden eyes.

*((~25 cm if you're inclined to metric.))

It's quite tranquil, eerily peaceful... This strange melody this pokemon sings. I feel my eyelids growing extremely heavy. When was the last time I slept anyway? When we busted that illegal pokemon trafficer? I lay back and shut my eyes, allowing the peaceful melody to lure me into a deep slumber. A last second thought occurs to me before I pass out... "Perhaps I should bring Weepinbell out to disguise itself as foliage and keep an eye on me in case trouble arrives while I'm asleep? Nah, I'll be fine, I've survived worse!"

Matt:

You close your eyes and drift off.

It's dark. Completely dark. But you know you're in your cabin on the ship; you can feel it rolling beneath you. The ship cabins are small; there's a door off to your left that leads to the bathroom, and another in front of you, which lets out into the hallway. You have a feeling of vague unease and the sense that you need to go somewhere.

((Pokemon hunting!))

Mina trudged along with the boys, feeling muzzier by the moment but determined to stick it out; if they were plunging themselves into Bandra territory tomorrow this was going to be the last of the peaceful productive time she was likely to have. And if she couldn't even manage against wild Pokemon like this, she was in deep trouble. So she made conversation with Mark and Jack as necessary and otherwise focused on keeping up.

The night was dark but clear, and at first all Mina noticed was the dry grass under her feet and the swish, swish noise the grass made as they moved through it. But gradually she became aware of a chorus of tiny voices, all singing.

She took her eyes off her feet to look around. Whispering, she asked, "Can you hear that?"

"Way out here?" Mina wanted to say something beyond that, but her line of reasoning was subsumed by haziness so she said instead, "Let's go check it out."

((Checking it out...))

As the party came closer the singing became a little more distinct, and it became clear they weren't human voices. Five of the creatures were perched on an oddly circular formation of rocks, their giant golden eyes lifted skyward as they sang.

"Those are Cosmas," Mina whispered, recognizing the species from the failed assault on Keida. Mark may have remembered Sparky and his Cosmas, but Mina wasn't sure Jack had met him.

"What a nightmare.... reliving that awful moment again..." I squint my eyes and try to look around. The Cosmas appears to have left. Either that or it stopped singing. I began to stretch, I must admit that random nap felt great, the air feels nice and cool on the skin. Gradually, light erupted from behind clouds and the moon, in all its full glory, was a spectacular sight to behold. Could the Cosmas have seen it and known it was going to be full tonight? Are they somehow linked?
I felt a shiver of thrill go up my spine at the unknown and potential discoveries to be had. Least, discoveries to me. Suppose if I took more time to read about my surroundings and what's going on in the local newspapers or something, I might be more knowledgeable.

"Can't worry about such trivial matters now though, guess we'll keep trekking for Trainer Hill!"

If the DJ really was trying to throw him off, then Mark must be luckier than he thought, because he had that entire remix (unwillingly) seared into his memory for all time. And while it always made his throat sore, he was going to ace this song!

Pokemon Hunting

Upon hearing the singing, Mark would try to think of sonething, please god anything other than Jiggly Puff who would gather late at night to sing... and then remembers Chinchau. That would be fine. A gathering of drifting little puffballs...

And he wasn't far off on the balls part, given what he was looking at now! While these Cosmas were vaguly familiar, Mark would think of them as something new and mumble, "Huh... looks like some of the night sky came down to visit, guys."

Mark:
((Karaoke:

*buzzer noise* What I've Done - Linkin Park has already been used!))

You realize, halfway through the second verse, that your memory doesn't match up with the teleprompter. By then it's too late; a number of people have noticed and Elder Rashel (who is playing the part of informal judge for this contest) signals that you've been disqualified.

Looking around afterwards you realize that Mina is no where to be seen, and you're sure she passed this round...then you realize your Pokedex has received a new text:

Mina sent you a message!

Hey Sunshine! Sorry I'm going to miss the rest of your singing, I made a bit of a mess I need to clean up. I'll catch up with you after the contest!

----------------

Mina:

((Karaoke: ))

Mina took a quick trip to the restroom and realized she really needed to do more than that, she really needed to go to the Mart. And then change clothes. Because there was no way she was going to walk back on stage like this.

She reflected with irritation that she was going to have to skip out on the rest of the singing. At the very least she'd have liked to listen to Mark, but as it was she was liable to make an embarrassing mess. She'd have to find a way to make it up to him, but first she needed to let him know she was bailing in case he wondered where she'd gone.

So she fired off a text and shot off for the Mart. ((-700 PD for "Emergency Supplies", 3250 PD remaining)) then circled around to the Pokemon Center to change clothes and look for something that could remove bloodstains.

----------------

Everyone but Matt:

((Pokemon hunting: ))

"Those are what? Cosmas? What are those?"

"Spectral Pokemon," Mina replied seriously, still whispering.

Jack's Pokedex filled in a little more detail – they were Dark/Spectral types, ranging in level from 15 to 23. All were male (the Pokedex indicated that on average, only one in four of the species was female) with the Ability Magic Guard. They either hadn't noticed the humans watching them yet or were ignoring them; either seemed likely.

Cosmas A: 58/58
Cosmas B: 43/43
Cosmas C: 41/41
Cosmas D: 50/50
Cosmas E: 50/50

----------------

Matt:

It's still early enough to be dark when you awake, and the stars have been gradually covered by clouds in the meantime, but you're able to make out dusty footprints around where you were lying...and a few on your shirt where the Pokemon apparently prodded you a bit. But the Pokemon herself is gone, nor does there seem to be anything else in the vicinity. On reflection, perhaps it's a little surprising you weren't attacked by Murkrow given your luck with that species so far.

You make your way to Trainer Hill. This time the trip is uneventful; the only Pokemon signs you notice are calls from too far away to bother you or unthreatening things like tracks, not the Pokemon themselves. It gradually turns to morning as you come within sight of the tower your map indicates is Trainer Hill; an overcast morning with clouds that cover the sky from horizon to horizon, though the air doesn't have any feel of rain.

As you approach you see a couple of people have camped around the base of the building. Most of them are just finishing packing up as you arrive, but one parked just outside the entrance is setting up a stall – the signs proclaim it to be selling cologne.

Looking in through the reinforced glass doors of the tower entrance you can see the floor inside is white tile, shockingly clean and new-looking compared to most of the buildings you've seen in Helnith so far, with the emblem of the Battle Frontier emblazoned in the center. Around the edges of the room are nice, elegant padded couches, equally tasteful little tables, and the occasional classy potted plant, but this early in the morning no one is using them.

Beyond that the place appears to have just recently opened for the day; the lobby is cluttered with people, some of whom are gathered around a giant digital notice board that stretches toward the ceiling far overhead, others are lined up along one wall while a sleepy-looking attendant checks them in, and a handful more are watching some of the giant televisions suspended above the front desk – watching the news or possibly the weather forecast as far as you can tell.

Behind the front desk – which spans almost the entirety of the back wall – a number of doors are set, and when the woman checking in the people in line finishes with them, they pass through these doors in ones and twos. On the other end of the lobby you can see a Nurse Joy behind the desk too, but right now she just looks to be setting up for the day.

Closer to the front of the lobby (and just barely visible without going inside) an old man with a floor-length beard in monk's robes is seated cross-legged on the floor off to the side, surrounded by meditation mats and pillows; a trainer is kneeling before him and the two appear to be chatting while a younger man, also in monk robes, serves them both tea.

Opposite them you can see the edge of a little specialty coffee shop; it's doing brisk business as far as you can tell.

((There's a lot to see here. What do you want to look at first? ))

Though not shouting, he forgot about being quiet. Since he went through the trouble of retrieving Rattata for tonight's activity, he took that one in hand for the battle ahead, if they decided to do battle. He then started thinking which other Pokmon he might want to send out.

((The competition))

Mark, in his sleep addled mind, had unfortunately been remembering the version that the Lucario had actually been singing, instead of how the song was supposed to go. Needless to say, while the pokemon had gotten close-ish in a few places, even that temporary mistake was quite obviously different, and got the young man kicked out of the running. And, with as much grace as he could muster, Mark would go over to the punch bowl and stand there awkwardly, sipping at the fruity, spicy concoction to help him stay awake a little bit better than Mina was at the moment.

In response to her message, Mark would send back, "Alright 'Dawn,' see you in a little bit," and then he was back to waiting and watching the competition come to an end. After all, this was only one of two competitions here, right? The initial one also had a winner, and while he doubted they had won that one as well, he might as well see who ended up on top!

((The battle))

Just before the Cosmas noticed them, Mark was in the middle of whispering to Jack, "S-Ssssssh, they hear- aw crud." Not having wanted to fight so many spectral types at once -after all, he did already have one shadowed pokemon to try and cure as it stood- Mark was hesitant to fight a group of pokemon that could, potentially, shadow more members of his team. However, it seems like they don't really have a choice!

Tossing out Lapras, Mark would consider it for a second and decide that it was worth experimenting to see if Shadowing was considered a stat change, and tell his water type, "Alright buddy, let's use Mist right away, okay?" Even if this didn't work, it would also be good to make sure the Cosmas didn't have the ability to debuff the trio's pokemon or power themselves up, anyway...

Wrong power on Bash; should be lower. Fixing.

Matt:

"Please do, I only ever normally battled, wouldn't know how to double or roulette, what is that by the way? Some sort of cheese?"

"Roulette? The Roulette challenge is a single battle format, where the battlefield is affected by random changes to the battlefield – rain, sandstorms, Trick Room, the list goes on. It's a little harder than the Normal challenge, but the BP reward for participating is higher and starts sooner.

The Double-Battle challenge pairs you up with another trainer and the two of you battle against a pair of opponents each round. You can sign up with a friend, or if you came alone we will pair you up with another trainer. Since you have to coordinate with someone else, the Double-Battle challenge also has a higher BP reward.

The Normal challenge is just your average one-on-one match with no added variables. It's the most straight-forward of the three, and has a lower BP payout than the others, but it's the easiest and the challenge we recommend if you're just getting started.

All three challenges are four battles in length, and usually take about two hours total assuming you win each match. You're only allowed three Pokemon and these must be selected before you enter; there are no restrictions on Held Items but you're not permitted to use other items on the Pokemon during the challenge. ((No Potions, Antidotes etc.)) You have the option of having your Pokemon completely healed between matches but it will give you a penalty of one round each time you select that option.

Shall I go on?"

----------------

Mark (competition):

Upon inquiry, it turns out the first part wasn't a competition of any kind, but you bump into someone in the audience who remembers your performance and was impressed. So you get a Leppa Berry for your trouble anyway.

((+1 Leppa Berry))

----------------

Everyone else:

Seeing Mark send out Lapras, Mina sent out Oodramer to support him – only after her Spectral type had materialized did it occur to her that she shouldn't even be considering the others, with the risk of Shadowing. Not sure how durable the little creatures were, she called for Facade on the smallest of them.

Lapras uses Mist!
The battlefield is shrouded in Mist!

Cosmos A uses Pursuit!
It's not very effective...
Ratttata is hit for 12 damage!

Oodramer uses Facade!
It's super effective!
Cosmas C is hit for 48 damage!
Cosmas C faints!

Mina looked at the battered and unconscious little Dark type with a bit of regret; she hadn't meant to hit it that hard. In retrospect, the fact that there was ten levels of difference between Oodramer and his target probably made up for the fact that his physical strength was lousy.

Cosmas D uses Haze!

A slightly darker mist poured out over the battlefield, but as the battle had barely started and most of the Pokemon haven't done anything, nothing meaningful happened.

Cosmas E uses Tail Whip!
But it failed!

Whirlipede uses Defense Curl!
But it failed!

Rattata uses Focus Energy!
Rattata is getting pumped!

Cosmas B uses Bash!
Lapras is hit for 7 damage!
Lapras' Shadow Gauge rises by 3%!

It seemed Shadowing was more along the lines of Burn or Poison than a stat adjustment.

Lapras' Shadow Gauge falls by 2%!
