"Alright, both of you go for that one," Jack says pointing to Cosmas B. "Rattata, you quick attack, and Whirlipede use rollout!" Jack was also wondering what this Oodramer was that Mina called out. He was trying to remember if she showed it to him, but was coming up blank on that as well. Since having his pokedex out, he scanned the Oodramer to figure out what it was.

Matt:

"Of course! We show highlights of the more interesting battles once they get started. Give it another half-hour and the first set of trainers should be up on the screens there," she motions to the giant televisions hanging overhead.

((Any other questions feel free to ask, otherwise...))

You make your way over to the giant prize display. Most of it is unsurprisingly taken up by a list of the prizes and their cost in Battle Points:

Watching that attack hit, but also wincing as he realizes that his guess was correct on the shadowing, but Mist did nothing to stop it, Mark would wince and say, "Alright Lapras, buddy, you're doing good. Let's do our best to keep that from happening again, and use Sing on the 3 toughest-looking ones!"

Everyone but Matt:

Jack's Pokedex came back after a moment, telling him Mina's Oodramer was a Spectral/Normal type, level 26, with the Ability 'Slime Body'. The Pokedex also spit out an informational blurb:

This Pokémon was recently discovered by an expedition into another dimension led by a scientist of Helnith. Its body resists various forms of attack.

Rattata uses Quick Attack!
It's super effective!
Cosmas B is hit for 34 damage!

Battered by the hit, Cosmas B was nevertheless game enough to get back up and chase after Rattata, screaming a high-pitched battle cry.

Lapras uses Sing!
Cosmas A fell asleep!
Attack missed Cosmas D!
Cosmas E fell asleep!

Cosmas A sleeps!

Oodramer uses Bubblebeam!
Cosmas D is hit for 60 damage!
Critical hit!
Cosmas D faints!

Mina facepalmed at the Pokedex readout. Why can't we get hits like this against Bandra? Why does it have to be when we're trying to catch new Pokemon???

Cosmas E sleeps!

Whirlipede uses Rollout!

Jack's Whirlipede went spinning after Cosmas B, but as the latter was still chasing madly after Rattata the attack went wide.

Attack missed!

Perhaps heartened by the near-miss, Cosmas B put on a burst of speed, finally caught up with Jack's Rattata and pounced.

Cosmas B uses Bash!
Rattata is hit for 70 damage!
It's super effective!

The hit was so hard as to be audible over the rest of the fight. As Rattata fell limp to the ground, her body took on a mottled look which, in better lighting, would obviously mark her as being Shadowed.

Rattata faints!
Rattata's Shadow Gauge rises 100%! (())
Rattata is Shadowed!

Lapras' Shadow Gauge falls by 1%!

Mina stared blankly at what her Pokedex was telling her. For a moment she didn't really understand it, then a feeling of deep dread crept up. It got substantially worse when she thought back to her earlier battle against the trainer with the Arkhiti. She felt a strong desire to go find that trainer, throw herself at their feet and apologize.

I'm sorry I'm sorry I didn't realize--!

A yelp from the little Cosmas as he skidded to a halt brought her back to the present. A foggy thought surfaced that she needed to get that Pokemon off the field before someone killed him, and that spurred her to start digging through her pack for a Great Ball. Thus she didn't notice that behind the Cosmas, the rock formations they'd been perched on were beginning to stir...

Since he didn't have his pokedex out almost all the time, Mark wouldn't notice how fast the poor Rattatta's Shadow Gauge would rise and he would act without taking that into account. Pulling out a normal pokeball, Mark would look at his companions and say, "Hey, I'll try to catch the weakest one, let's save your balls for one of the stronger two, since those two are asleep and we'll have some more time to deal with them."

Throwing the pokeball, Mark would look at Lapras and command, "Alright, buddy, let's use Water Pulse on that biggest Cosmas, and..." It was then that mark noticed the shifting movement, and his eyes would narrow as he braced himself for whatever was going to pop up next.

Everyone but Matt:

Mark's Pokeball flew at the little Dark type and briefly engulfed it.

...very briefly, the ball popping after a single shake. ((-1 Pokeball. And remember you get one action per Pokemon out Gnomes. ))

Mina, seeing this, put the Great Ball back in her pack.

Whirlipede managed to connect this time, but her sleeping target snored on. ((9 damage))

The single conscious Dark type was too preoccupied to pay much attention to the humans, as he frantically tried to push his sleeping and unconscious fellows out of the way of what was becoming clear was a circle of startled Rhyhorn. Both sleeping Cosmas were snoozing deeply enough that neither so much as stirred at the noise or the shoving.

The Rhyhorn were another matter. The Rock types bellowed at the rude awakening and, after a moment of cunfused bellowing, got their collective heads together enough to start charging in the direction of the noise.

As I stride up to Pellana, a cheerful smile on my face and hand waving madly as though seeing a famous celebrity.

"Greetings Miss Ana! Long time no see! How have you been? How long have you been training for your Hitmonlee to be so powerful? I mean, you really moped the floor with him! Unfortunately I was quite the floor! I've been wanting to ask you a few questions since our last encounter, would you have time to conversate? Perhaps someplace private?" I asked with a raise of my eyebrow. With someone as powerful as her, surely these Bandra goons wouldn't stand a chance. And with such a leader as herself, one would believe she could amass the citizens to take their country back. Perhaps a bit of persuasion would be needed.

Lapras, use water pulse on the herd alpha. And Corphish and Kirlia, if you aren't too dizy, let's get you in here. Corphish, use bubble on the alpha and one of the smallest ones. Following behind Pellana I glance about to ascertain nobody's close enough to eavesdrop before asking, at least what I thought, to be important questions.

"I know it's not my place, being a ship wrecked survivor and all, but I'm immensely curious about this region's problem with this Team Bandra. Don't the locals resist and fight back? Would it not do good to form some.... sort of militia? Through an encounter with them of my own, I can see why folks are so nervous, one can't tell if their own neighbor works with this group or not. One of the members that attacked me was from Landsedge. I've no idea where that is exactly, nor do I know for what purpose Bandra is here. What I do know, however, is that no group that attacks passerby's is good. Especially if murder is involved, not that it takes a rocket scientist to know that. But as an ex-member, I've lived with a lot of regrets for my past and have an aching desire to redeem myself for what I've had to do to ensure my family's safety as well as what I've had to do to innocent pokemon. It's not easy. But you seem to be a highly respected member of the community here, and I was curious as to why, exactly, there's no resistance force? And if there is, how might one enlist?" I placed my hand on my cheek with crossed arms and looked at her with intent desire of do-well on my face. Reliving my past by talking about it was never easy, but seeing it in person is certainly harder from the other side of the pendulum.

Everyone but Matt:

Mina called out her Sandshrew and gave the order for Rock Smash, and told Oodramer to Bubblebeam, instructing both of them to target anything that looked like it was going to hit them or the Cosmas.

Horsea uses Bubblebeam!
Rhyhorn F is hit for 288 damage!
It's super effective!
Rhyhorn F faints!

Kirlia uses Lucky Chant!

Grandpa uses Water Pulse!
Attack missed!

As his target is unconscious and no longer moving, Grandpa's attack goes high and does nothing.

Lapras uses Water Pulse!
Rhyhorn A is hit for 241 damage!
It's super effective!
Rhyhorn A faints!

Cosmas A wakes up!

The pounding of many Ground-type feet awakens one of the Cosmas, who wisely scoots further away from the stampede.

One of the Rhyhorn was bearing down on Oodramer, but as ordered, he took aim and blasted it with a stream of bubbles.

Oodramer uses Bubblebeam!
Rhyhorn B is hit for 172 damage!
It's super effective!
Rhyhorn B faints!

Cosmas E still sleeps!

Whirlipede uses Rollout!
Cosmas E is hit for 20 damage!

Corphish uses Bubble!
Attack missed!
Rhyhorn E is hit for 84 damage!
It's super effective!
Rhyhorn E faints!

Being unconscious, the herd alpha never made it into range of Corphish's attack.

"They're Rock/Ground types!" Mina's voice was groggy and plaintive. Her Sandshrew was watching the Rhyhorn but nothing came close to attack or trample her, and the Cosmas had either gotten out of the way or been pushed out, so the Ground Pokemon simply sat there awaiting new orders.

Rhyhorn C uses Stomp!
Horsea is hit for 11 damage!

Rhyhorn D uses Stomp!
Corphish is hit for 8 damage!

The remaining Rhyhorn continue their mindless charge and disappear into the darkness. The conscious Cosmas look almost ready to follow suit...

Blinking as the rhyhorns that are targeted just go down, hard, like large sacks of rocky potatoes, really, Mark would just mumble, "I... uh... I knew that would be effective, but didn't think it was going to do that..." in answer to Mina's groaning. He'd honestly expected them to be a bit more beefy!

"Well okay then, so, Lapras, use sing on those two still awake ones." Mark said, scratching at the back of his head, before pulling out another pokeball. "Corphish, use bubble beam on the biggest Cosmas, and I'm going to try to catch the weakest one again... after seeing if he falls asleep. Kirlia, just wait for now." Hopefully he would be able to weaken the biggest one with Jack for Mina to easily catch it, and they would just be able to catch all three in one fell swoop.

"We do! They did!" Pellana protests. "They're called the 'Starlight Squad' – most of what was left of them after the attack on Stardust City was in Ternai when..." Pellana falters at the reminder. "...right. What's left of them is split between Ceris and a big camp just outside Skybreak City.

"Through an encounter with them of my own, I can see why folks are so nervous, one can't tell if their own neighbor works with this group or not. ((Gonna have to convince her you're not an evil criminal before you're going to get more info out of her. ))

----------------

Everyone but Matt:

Mina called for Sandshrew to Sand Attack, and after a moment of groggy thought told Oodramer to use Veneer. Meanwhile, Jack's Pokeball engulfed the sleeping Cosmas.

Shake...shake...shake...DING! Cosmas E was caught!

Cosmas E
Type: Dark/Spectral
Ability: Magic Guard
Gender: Male
Level: 19

Would you like to give a nickname to Cosmas E? ((And you're already at six, so Box Storage regardless.))

Grandpa used Confusion!

The little battered Cosmas lets out a squeak and dives to the ground, trying to cover his head with his tiny front arms. To no avail; the attack washes over him full force.

No effect!

He blinks, giant golden eyes just visible to the humans, bewildered but not Confused, nor indeed any worse off than he'd been beforehand.

What is he trying to do? "We are trying to catch them not kill them," Mina pointed out irritably, feeling too out-of-sorts to be polite. And they're Dark types in any case!

Lapras uses Sing!
Cosmas A fell Asleep!
Attack missed!

Mark's second Pokeball, unfortunately, didn't fare any better than the first, and popped with little fanfare. ((-1 Pokeball Mark))

Cosmas A sleeps!

Oodramer uses Veneer!
But it failed!

Mina face-palmed. Too soon! "Sorry Oodramer!"

Whirlipede used Rollout!
Attack missed!

Corphish uses Bubblebeam!
Cosmas A is hit for 29 damage!

Sandshrew uses Sand Attack!
Cosmas A's Accuracy falls!
Cosmas B's Accuracy falls!

Cosmas B seemed to be losing his nerve, having been battered, almost trampled, and now the only one of his group still awake and conscious. He scurried off into the dark.

"After it Mark!" Mina called as Lapras' Mist finally faded. "We'll meet up at the Pokemon Center!"

Pellana interrupts, loudly enough to catch attention. "Wait, what?" She looks a little taken aback at this unexpected confession. "You were in Bandra?"

"Negative. I grew up in the Kanto region and lived in Saffron City after graduating college with a degree in Pharmacology. Basically, studying the effects of drugs. As my research was quite good, it attracted the wrong sort of attention. As Bandra is the bullying sort of gang here, in my region, at least at the time, Team Rocket were the evil doers. Perhaps the 'grand daddy' of crime gangs at the time. Maybe even giving fruit to these groups in other regions of the country."
Clearing my throat I continued on.
"So having attracted their attention I was given an ultimatum. I either help with their research, or I lose everything I know. Life. Family. Friends. Research. I concluded that even though helping them was against everything I stood for, I couldn't let harm come to those closest to me. And at the very least, I could lessen the harm they do to those innocent pokemon that they subjected to tests that they put me in charge of. Mainly sorts of steroid usage. Pumping pokemon to perform feats far beyond those trained normally. Where pokemon with types of effectiveness against others, were nearly nullified. Perhaps the term 'superhuman' would come close to what they were trying to accomplish."
Giving out a deep sigh, I throw up my hands exasperated.
"I mean what was I to do!? I couldn't let them perform horrible atrocities unsupervised with lives on the line. I made sure that the pokemon survived. After the goons would leave, I'd inject them with counter active drugs to undo the damage those snows wanted done. Had they achieved what they wanted, they'd of been unstoppable. The whole dang world would have been forced under their heels. Nothing would have stopped them, not the most powerful, all natural pokemon in existence could have even made them falter in their step for global domination. I stalled them for years to make them see that what they desired was impossible."
I noticed with a quick glance around that people were looking and pointing, it seems we caused a scene. Leaning in I say in Pellana's ear so that only she can hear me.
"Had they any other experts there, anyone with even an inkling of knowledge, had they not trusted me with the utmost respect for my craft, and found out that I lied to them about all the test results, and that I was doing everything I could to sabotage their operation. I'd be dead right now. And I'd rather die than let anyone make pokemon suffer like that. The suffering they had to endure under my care was minimal in comparison to the monstrosities they'd have become... You think your Hitmonlee hits hard? Heh. A Magikarp flopping about on that stuff would have broken every limb it has..." I end there and lean back. A solitary tear trickling down my face. I hated it. How I don't wake from nightmares at night is beyond me. But surely, I did it all for a good cause. A justifiable cause. But does anyone understand? Probably not. All they see is, "you harmed innocent pokemon! How could you! You're a monster!" But there it is Pellana, I thought to myself, it's all on the table now. Judge as you see fit.

Matt:

Pellana seems...shaken is the only word that comes to mind. Clearly she wasn't expecting any major revelations with her pastry this morning. "That's...a lot to take in. Why are you telling me this? I mean, in the first place? You could have just asked about the Starlight Squad...what are you trying to do?"

You can tell that she's not quite ready to trust you yet, but she's not yelling, calling for the police or trying to get away from you either, and the curious passers-by were growing incurious again.

"That's...a lot to take in. Why are you telling me this? I mean, in the first place? You could have just asked about the Starlight Squad...what are you trying to do?"

I laugh light heartedly, at least as light hearted as I can, it probably sounds more like a raspy cough than anything.

"As I may have mentioned before, I'm not a local. I've yet to pick up a newspaper, or watch the news to know what's been going on in this region. I was attacked by these Bandra goons firsthand, turned in some of their personal belongings to the proper authorities to prove my good intentions, and could see you were a bit... put off when I inquired about them at our last meeting in..."Ah crap, what was the name of that town again?!"...uh... where the contest hall was? Where I was soundly beaten by your Hitmonlee and lost a wager I had in hopes of finding a fire type pokemon? Breeder fellow by the name of Dash? I apologize for my horrid memory, I can't recall new areas, but names seem to ring bells with me. But yes, why am I telling you this... To gain your trust. You are obviously highly skilled and looked up too as an ideal public figure whom has popularity in this region. Obviously well aware of what's happening here. As for what I'm trying to do, well I was hoping that'd be clear. I'm trying to help drive this Bandra group from your homes. To return the region to the innocent and protect the weak. The world doesn't need any more Team Rocket wannabe's. And for whatever reason these thugs are here, it's not for anyone else's good. I'd bet my last dollar on that. And as for this Starlight Squad... How can I ask about a group of freedom fighters I don't even know about?" Sighing "What sort of trial would I have to perform to earn your trust ma'am? What sort of good samaritan deed shall I accomplish? It seems to be the best form of communication amongst strangers. Pouring my heart out about my past apparently only made things far more awkward than they needed to be. So.... Miss Ana... pray tell... what can i do for you today?"
I folded my hands and looked at her, nearly praying one might say, for a favorable response. I began to wonder if all the locals were this friendly, not that I can blame them. Damn these Bandra people anyway. Curious as to why the Elite Four haven't stopped them. Or why the region's Gym Leaders haven't teamed up to put a stop to this menace. Perhaps these questions may find answers with this group of freedom fighters she mentioned. Only time will tell!
