Well, Lapras hadn't been hit very hard, and Mark was finally here to help like he said he'd be... so... trying to think of what he could do to help, Mark would call out to Lapras, "Well, since the goal is to not knock out our friend here, I guess use Rain Dance?" Mark would suggest, reaching to get Corphish's pokeball on the off-chance that he needed to start healing his water dinosaur.

Mark, Jack, Mina:

So far they were managing, but Mina reflected they were going to need to find a way to speed this up if this was going to be a regular event.

"And again!"

Pidgey uses Sand Attack!
Rattata's Accuracy falls!

Lapras uses Rain Dance!
It began to rain!

Rattata seemed to be fighting off some kind of fit; she stood stiffly, shaking from nose to tail, and there was a brief moment of clarity in her mad eyes.

But then she made a strangled screech—

—and performed a Tail Whip, though the attack went wide of any valid targets.

Rattata uses Tail Whip!
Attack missed!
Attack missed!

Rattata's Shadow Gauge falls 2%!

((Rain Dance: 4 rounds remaining))

Lapras: 97/107

Pidgey: 52/67

Rattata: 33/38 (Accuracy down 3 levels, Shadowed: 94%)

Jack took a step forward, hearing the Rattata's screech. He almost went running to it, just to check on her. Maybe give her a hug, but he held back. They had to work through more of the shadowing. "Try and tail whip the Lapras again," Jack said, with far less gusto than any of his recent commands.

With Rattata seeming to come a little bit under control now, Mark would look at lapras and tell his pokemon, "Alright, good job for now buddy! Just wait for now, and make sure to keep the door blocked off." This is going well! But... it looks like this is going to take a while.

Following the Rattata's obedience or disobedience of his last order, Jack would call for more of the same for the next 6 rounds, targeting Lapras and Pidgey equally.

((Six more rounds, combined into one post: (1d100)[30], (1d100)[1], (1d100)[65], (1d100)[20], (1d100)[18], (1d100)[14]))

Forgot to update HP values for EL 19

Mark, Jack, Mina:

Mina calls for Sand Attack until it stops having any effect, then just tells Pidgey to evade.

Four more rounds pass without meaningful event – even Shadowed, Rattata seems willing to follow Jack's direction more often than not. ((Excellent rolls there! ))

But just as the rain is clearing up everything goes bad at once.

Rattata freezes up on the fifth round; by now she's done this a few times without meaningful effect. But then all three Pokedexes start blaring in chorus:

"WARNING! WARNING! Shadow Pokémon detected! Shadow Rage imminent."

Rattata goes from a mottled purple-black to a solid black that seems to devour light. Her minor injuries heal with supernatural speed and a quick glance at the Pokedexes shows that the effects of Pidgey's sand have melted away just as thoroughly. She's also experienced a power boost - next to the Pokedex's readout of her level there's a notation: Effective Level 19.

Mina looks worried – frightened might be a better word at this point – but not surprised, an impression reinforced when she exclaims, "Not this again!"

Rattata uses Ether Focus!
Rattata is getting pumped!
Rattata's Attack rises!
Rattata's Special Attack rises!
Rattata's Speed rises!

Moving with newfound speed, Rattata aims a vicious attack at Mark—

((You have time to act. But not a lot of time to act. ))

Lapras: 97/107 (Defense down 1 level)

Pidgey: 52/67 (Defense down 2 levels)

Rattata: 46/46 (Crit ratio up, Attack up 1 level, Special Attack up 1 level, Speed up 1 level Shadowed: 88% (Rage))

Rattata is hit for 38 damage!

Lapras uses Ice Shard!
Rattata is hit for 30 damage!
Rattata faints!

Horsea obediently starts filling the room with smoke, breaking off after realizing the Shadowed Pokemon is down.

Mina looks a little shaken, but her tone is conversational as she says, "Well, that was exciting. Any objection if we call it there for tonight?"

((Rage is over since Rattata was knocked unconscious, and her Effective Level is restored to her normal level.))

We've still got a ways to go, but we're making progress." With a pat on the head to Pidgey, and a rub upon the neck for Lapras, Jack would head for the door. "I think I'm going to go get some rest myself. Have a great night." With that, Jack would make his way to his room.

Hearing two dull thunks and a third, softer thud, Mark would look up to see that the rat-pokemon had been successfully knocked out before he could chew on the trainer's face, and Mark would sigh in relief at the realization that his precious modeling career was still a possibility. "Um... y-yeah, let's call it there for the night..." He would sigh, thinking about Chevlain and how shadowed she was, and how difficult that might make her to un-shadow, if this rage thing happened a lot. "Uh, Mina? I-If you have any fighting or dragon types, m-maybe it would be a good idea to get them out of storage before we try to un-shadow Chevlain... you know. After she's been healed up."

Mark, Jack, Mina:

Pidgey cooed and seemed to enjoy Jack's petting.

"Uh, Mina? I-If you have any fighting or dragon types, m-maybe it would be a good idea to get them out of storage before we try to un-shadow Chevlain... you know. After she's been healed up."

Mina nodded but frowned a little; she didn't have any Dragon or Fighting types presently. Or Rock. Or Steel. Houndoom might be resistant enough to be useful and he knew Rock Smash, maybe that would be good enough...but most of her Pokemon were regrettably weak to ice... "I'll see what I can do," was all she said. The whole thing had been worrying enough with just Jack's Rattata, which was only slightly more than half the level of Pidgey and some of the other more experienced Pokemon. With something more experienced? Or even just on the same level?

She wasn't looking forward to it.

((If you want to chit-chat IC a little more feel free; in the interest of not keep gorman waiting longer than necessary I'm going to split our timeline a little.))

----------------

Jack:

You are awakened several times during the night as Rattata's Pokeball shakes – exactly as though she were a new capture trying to escape, though as her 'signature' has long since been registered to it the ball doesn't yield. Otherwise the night passes without event.

----------------

Mina:

Mina wandered off to bed once Pidgey was tended and she was sure the boys were settled. She was so out of it she almost put the Pokechow into her mouth and the toothpaste out for the Pokemon before she realized what she was doing, and there was a distinctly distracted quality to the hugs and petting and praise she gave them. She also forgot to recall them, leaving them to dogpile next to her on the bed.

((11:50 PM))

Oodramer got Mina's attention and managed to convey that he wanted to go back in his ball. Belatedly she realized his slimy body was soaking the comforter and (probably) drying him out. She recalled him and lay back down to sleep.

((12:10 AM))

Not yet able to sleep, Mina abruptly remembered she hadn't watered her Sitrus Berry. Knowing it was going to bother her until she did, she climbed out of bed to do so, provoking some grumbling as the Pokemon who had jockeyed for position to curl up next to her had to shift around again. ((NTS: Sitrus is in bloom. +1 watering.))

((3:13 AM))

Mina had managed to sleep, but not well. The dream of doors didn't make an appearance like she'd half-expected. Instead it was replaced with dreams of bleeding walls and extremely dirty toilets. It wasn't disturbing as such, but it woke her up anyway. After a look at the time, she rolled over and managed to get back to sleep.

((6:30 AM))

Mina woke up again, and this time the clock was telling her that now it was an hour when sane people were awake, thus there wasn't much point in going back to sleep. She managed to slip out of bed without waking most of her Pokemon; all but Pikachu, who with the usual energy of the young seemed not the least bothered by the night's shorted sleep. The Electric type trailed after her as Mina brushed her teeth and got ready for the day. Mina grabbed her Pokeball and left the rest of her team to rest.

Mina had never been a coffee drinker, but fortunately there was caffinated tea in one of the kitchen cupboards; that would suffice to clear the sleepiness at least, and might even help a little with the other cause of muzziness at least for a while. She made herself a cup and went to sit in the lobby, pulling out some paper and scribbing a rather rambling list of ideas as her mind started down the tracks for 'Shadowing' and then got distracted after a few minutes.

Why can't humans lay eggs? Mina grumbled mentally as she tried to got over the list again. That would be much simpler—

"Miss Bram?" Nurse Joy got her attention; there was a Great Ball in her hand. "Your Natu is back to perfect health."

Mina got up and wandered over to get him, managing a smile. Mentally she was grumbling at the interruption but she knew intellectually that was her problem and not any fault of Nurse Joy's. She sat back down and stared at the ball unseeing for a moment as the sight of the Great Ball patterning stirred something in her mind...Cosmas! She hadn't asked him if he'd wanted to come with her before catching him. If they were going to go chasing after stolen Pokemon, she'd better do that. She got up, swapped Natu for him and went outside to call him out, Pikachu trailing behind.

He was new (and a Helnith Pokemon to boot) so Mina wasn't as familiar with his species' expressions as she was with some of her other Pokemon, but those enourmous golden eyes were very expressive and she was pretty sure he was nervous. He had, of course, been healed after his capture, but it was just becoming daylight and he was in a different area then he'd been captured in. Hoping to put him at ease, Mina sat down.

"Hi," Mina said to start off. He looked less nervous now and more curious; good! "I'm sorry I didn't ask you last night, can I keep you?"

Oh very eloquent Mina! She hoped it wasn't obvious she was in rather a lot of pain at the moment – or failing that that it was obvious it was pain and not, say, hostility.

She didn't have very high hopes of that at the moment; Cosmas was looking at her like she was insane. But those big gold eyes focused on Pikachu and he chattered some sort of question at her Electric type. Pikachu looked confused, and queried back. It was fascinating watching them communicate when you couldn't understand a word they were saying...

After a little bit more back and forth, Pikachu rubbed up against Mina's knee, and Mina obliged her with petting. Cosmas seemed to perk up at that, and scooted forward on his three stubby legs. He tiled sideways and held up one of the front feet; as bleary as Mina felt it took her a moment to to realize he was holding it out for her to shake. Was that a species thing or something he'd picked up from passing humans? No matter. Mina carefully took the proffered limb and gently shook it.

"I'm taking this as a yes," she informed him – just in case. She thought he nodded – it was hard to tell with his head and his body being more or less one piece – and the noise he made had a definite cheerful tone to it. She smiled, petted his crest and then scooped him up for his official first cuddling when he didn't seem to mind. "You're so cute!"

After a moment she put him back down, called him back and went back inside. She swapped him back for Natu – she wasn't sure who was going to come with her on the stolen Pokemon trail, but she knew she'd want her escape route, and there was something else...what was that Natu was holding? Right, the nurse said she was giving him an Everstone so he couldn't evolve until his wings healed.

Trying to stave off more of the muzziness, Mina got herself another cup of tea and sat down to think some more.

----------------

Mark:

You drift off to sleep about as well as you'd expect after a busy, occasionally harrowing day. Your dreams start normal enough, but gradually start to take on an alien sort of order; objects multiply and stack themselves neatly, having taken on a grander, more elegant appearance. Even subconsciously you notice that something feels off, or different somehow—not bad, just strange. You're also vaguely aware of a mumbling in the background, like someone's talking to you but you can't make out the words.

Until your dream world seems to fling itself open, and all of a sudden you can.

<Wake up, sleepy head!>

((You are now psychically linked with Kirlia. ))

----------------

Mark, Jack, Mina:

((Morning))

Mark and Jack both make it downstairs around 8:30 in the morning; Mina is sitting in the lobby with a somewhat scribbled-on list and a cup of hot tea in front of her, her Pikachu on her lap being petted. She doesn't seem to have slept well; she keeps staring at the list as though not entirely seeing it.

Nurse Joy waves Jack over as soon as he appears, handing him Tentacool's Pokeball with the cheerful news that the Water Pokemon has been restored to full health. Mark is informed that Chevalin is making progress, but will need a little more recovery time to make it up to the same standard. ((Her stat damage is down to 20%; another day in the Pokemon Center and it will be gone.))

Mark would slink off to bed shortly after all of that craziness, having Corphish use bubble to heal Lapras and rubbing along his not-a-dinosaur's neck to encourage him on a job well done, before just tromping over to his bed to pass out. This time, though, he did remember to take off his mechanical arm first, so that he didn't feel exhausted AND sore in the morning.

That dream, though... that would be an experience, to say the least. But hey, at least if he had nightmares in the future they would come nice and orderly, instead of randomly jumbled! You know... orderly based on what Kirlia was thinking. Which might just make them all the more horrifying. Her wake-up call would get a response of <Five more minutes...> with a mental bonk on his pokemon's head, but he would start waking up anyway.

Nope. Nevermind. Still sore. Though this was from sleeping all sprawled out and with his back almost shaped like an S.

Walking out of his room gingerly after re-attaching his arm, Mark would let out Kirlia and ask her, <So... you can talk to me now, huh? Cool! What other awesome psychic things can you do?> As he asked that, the young man would join up with Jack and Mina part-way through their conversation, still very sleepy and not really focusing on that yet.

Mark:

Kirla's 'voice' has a level of internal satisfaction comparable with someone reaching a goal long desired, but whose achievement was never in any real doubt. <Quite enough 'awesome psychic things' for our purposes. Here, let me show you!>

You feel a wash of knowledge not quite defined enough to be words, well-saturated with self-confidence...maybe bordering slightly on conceit. Some of it was information you already had from other sources, but from a different perspective. But some of it is new...

((Recap now that you're psychically linked:

--Kirlia can communicate with Mark telepathically. This means that for practical purposes she can talk, but only to Mark (unless you run into another telepath, then she can talk to the telepath too). Note that this is partially one-way: she can read Mark's mind to 'hear' what he's thinking, but only if she's paying attention.
--If she gets knocked out, there's a 25% chance Mark will get knocked out by the backlash.
--NEW INFO! She'll be able to read unguarded minds clearly at Special Attack 100—right now she's only guaranteed to get a general sense of someone's thoughts, not the exact content. For example, say you're interrogating a Bandra Grunt, and you ask them what the combination to their safe is. Right now she can tell you if they're lying when they answer, but she only has a chance to pick the combination directly out of their skull. The chance is:

Special Attack – (50 + the difference between their Special Defense and your Special Attack if they're Psychic) * 2 = % chance she reads their mind sucessfully. Boost the roll by 10% if she's making eye contact or physical contact with the target (and those stack, so 20% if you're doing both).

--At Special Attack 200 she can speak with non-psychics she's not bonded to.
--NEW INFO! Some of her powers will work better on Mark because of the link. For example, she'll eventually be able to sight share (ever see the movie with Latias and Latios? Like that) with Mark. (At Sp. Atk 200, unless Mark somehow manages to get a Special Attack score of his own – the combined Special Attack total of both parties has to be at least 200.)
--She can treat Mark as a 'place visited' for the purposes of Teleport. NEW INFO! And now that you have Kirlia's thought processes being beamed directly into your head, you have a better idea of how Teleport works (FINALLY):

TELEPORT
--The Pokemon must Teleport to a place it has been or can see and locate. (Tip: Binoculars. You have them. Use them. ) Since Mark counts as a 'place visited' to Kirlia she can Teleport to him even if she doesn't know where he is, as long as he's in the radius of her range and nothing interferes.
--Until it exceeds level 50 or Special Attack of 150, the Pokemon using Teleport MUST be in contact, directly or indirectly, with the person/Pokemon being teleported. (So you can have everyone hold hands and only one person actually touching the Pokemon; that counts.)
--The Pokemon does NOT have to teleport everything it’s in contact with. (Otherwise they’d be taking chunks of the ground with them whenever they Teleport.)
--Can’t transport Dark types with Teleport without the use of Miracle Eye. (Or a Pokeball. ) It's a psychic power and they're immune to psychic powers.
--The Pokemon can Teleport 1 individual for every 20 points of Special Attack it possesses. (This is why Mina got left behind when Lyra passed out.) The Pokemon itself does not count towards its Teleport limit.
--You can't teleport into physical objects. (So don't worry about accidentally getting fused with a wall.)
--Pokemon in Pokeballs don't count towards the Teleport limit.
--The distance a psychic Pokemon can Teleport is as follows:

(Special Attack / 10) + level bonus = miles

Level Bonus:
Level 5 - 0
Level 10 - 0.25
Level 15 - 0.5
Level 20 - 1
Level 25 - 3
Level 30 - 5
Level 35 - 7
Level 40 - 10
Level 45 - 13
Level 50 - 16
Level 55 - 19
Level 60 - 22
Level 65 - 25
Level 70 - 28
Level 75 - 31
Level 80 - 34
Level 85 - 38
Level 90 - 42
Level 95 - 46
Level 100 – 50))
