Mina pummeled the fog in her brain into submission; this was important and she needed to concentrate.

The Grunt knew the desirable Pokemon were going to Stardust. That meant the Taskmaster was taking the undesirable Pokemon somewhere else, because why send them separately otherwise? She doubted the Taskmaster was keeping the Pokemon for himself; it seemed out-of-character for Bandra higher-ups in general to hang on to rejects. Maybe he was passing them on to the Grunts? But then why take them away? Mina recognized the Unown symbols on the tiles, but had no idea why they might be important, and that made her feel uneasy.

Mina was fairly certain that leaving at this point would be a bad idea. They were battered, it was true, but the longer they waited the longer Bandra had to dig in and fortify themselves even further. Whatever was happening to the Pokemon, she doubted it was good, and more of them would suffer in the time it took the group to go back, recuperate, and return. Bandra might have accomplished whatever-it-was by then. Something else might come up and they might not be able to come back.

"There isn't much reason t-to take them in until we're done here...I think w-we could put all of them to s-sleep and tie them up, pick them up l-later? A-After scouting out the area and s-seeing what else is here."

“I like it,” Mina offered. Certainly it was better than letting them run back to their bosses.

"Might not have rope, but would vine whips suffice? Weepinbell could supply them. And if either of you three want the rest of the loot, I'll take it I suppose." I carefully searched the pockets of the remaining grunts for personal information and check the ground for any clues as to if we were on a beaten path, footprints, etc. I'll have to be far more careful about summoning pokemon from here on out. Having the element of surprise means nothing if a balls flash gives it all away and THEY get the surprise jump on us... I frown, deep in thought while looking at the Unown tiles. I speak, somewhat muttering to myself while turning them over in my hands, "I wonder what they do...hrmmm...."

Mina dug through her pack as the last Grunt slumped to the ground asleep. "No rope, but I have some duct tape," she offered.

"I wonder what they do...hrmmm...."

Mina peered at the tiles a little more closely. They were small enough to fit in her palm, square, and either ceramic or stone. The Unown markings were carved on one side, and the shapes were unmistakable for someone who'd grown up near the Ruins of Alph and battled the Pokemon themselves - both of which she'd done.

Unfortunately that didn't give her any better idea what they were for. So at last she shrugged helplessly. "No idea," she replied, knowing it wasn't a useful answer and hating it. "Maybe someone in the next group will know."

----------------

Matt's observations:

The Grunts' pockets appear to have been picked bare at this point, and are completely free of useful documentation or usable loot.

It's hard to tell in the dark and the rocky, mountainous terrain doesn't hold prints especially well,  but if this isn't a regular path through the mountains it could become one easily; the ground is stable, it isn't terribly steep. And, yes - there's a scrape of muddy boot print, too dry and old to be from this set of Grunts. It's probably a patrol route for Bandra if nothing else, especially if the Grunt was telling the truth about their camp.

----------------

((For now I'm just going to auto Jack to follow us around until I can write him out in a sensible manner. So if you want, say, a Smokescreen from his Horsea to cover an escape or something go ahead and say so, just don't expect much input or interaction from him as far as plans and roleplay.))

Mark examines the tiles, scratching at the back of his head as he remarks, "Well... I mean, I went on field trips to the Ruins of Alph. They said that Unknown kinda resemble letters a-and that they probably m-meant something to the people that made them. But..." Scratching at the back of his head, he admits, "I mean, I-I didn't pay much attention beyond t-that. And I-If they are important for... whatever reason, t-then they are probably part of some riddle o-or something. Which we don't have." Shrugging, he adds, "Maybe we'll f-figure it out when we get there. We ready to go?" He asks that last bit more to Jack and Matt, since they were the ones busy looting the bodies... er, sleeping grunts.

“Give me a sec,” Mina took the duct tape and helped bind the Grunts, then fed a couple Sitrus Berries to Houndoom ((-2 Sitrus Berries, Houndoom at full HP)) and recalled Oodramer. “There, I think that’s it.”

((Mina’s leaving Houndoom out, Jack is recalling all his Pokemon. Let me know what Pokemon you’re keeping out and which you’re recalling, then we’ll head out unless someone objects. If I don’t hear back from either of you in a reasonable amount of time I’ll assume you’re good as-is.))

Hm, it seems Bandra must know quite a bit about the tiles and what they're for if they're saving particular ones among other randomly dug up items. I can't help but ponder what the missing, mystery tiles might hold, what they're for, and what Bandra is out to accomplish. I search through my pack for useful berries to cure my pokemon with through scanning them with the pokedex, (aka bulbapedia.com Also at least half of the berries in my items are not listed on this site ) but finding nothing of use, I'm resorted to use a potion on each of my battered pokemon.
"Better than nothing I reckon." I say as I apply each potion. Thinking back, this might be the first battle where none of my pokemon fainted since coming ashore. I almost felt proud of that fact but still... losing the element of surprise almost cost the group as a whole greatly. "I suppose I'm as good to go as I'm going to be, Weepinbell and Ratman will remain out. Might be useful to have a rodents senses for danger."

Mark kept out Skarmory and Kirlia. Mentally he would ask the psychic type, -Can you detect the surface thought of people nearby, and about how far they are away from us? Knowing if some Bandra goon is sneaking up on us would be incredibly helpful.- But as he asks this, he's already walking and follows that question up by asking, -Also, do you know what unknown tablets could be used for?- Hey, might as well ask the hyper-genius psychic types what they know, right?

----------------

Mark’s questions:

-Can you detect the surface thought of people nearby, and about how far they are away from us? Knowing if some Bandra goon is sneaking up on us would be incredibly helpful.-

Fortunately Kirlia appears to be keeping tabs on Mark’s thoughts, because her response is swift. <Of course!>

-Also, do you know what unknown tablets could be used for?-

Mark gets a sense like Kirlia is rifling through several books and possibly phoning a friend before she responds. <The ancient humans of this place> being a telepathic contact Mark can tell that by ‘this place’ she means ‘Helnith as a whole’ <used them to contact the Unown.> The explanation has a distinct ‘I-heard-from-a-friend-who-heard-from-a-friend’ feel to it.

----------------

The group proceeds stealthily through the mountains. Luck seems to be with you; no more patrols appear and no wild Pokemon seem interested in harassing you. Not long after, Kirlia gets Mark’s attention.

<Mark, you should be aware there are people ahead!>

With the help of the Pokemon, the group is able to edge close enough to see the lights of the encampment. These are numerous; floodlights - wired in pairs to what look like enormous batteries - keep the entire valley well illuminated, helped out slightly by a large campfire right in the center of camp. The camp is in a natural valley, and a number of small tents are scattered around the edges. Walls of steep scree encircle most of the area, though the party can make out patches of gaping darkness indicating at least three more paths on the opposite side of the camp.

Bandra, as with the patrol, is making no effort to hide their presence. The group can see a handful of figures in the camp; someone is lounging near the campfire - roasting a hotdog? - and a few more are sitting farther back in a group, one man bragging loudly to the others, a small triangular Pokemon quivering at his feet.

I squint towards the lights and attempt to count how many Bandra goons I can see as well as attempt to figure out whom is talking to whom. But judging based on the situation, it feels safe to assume we're outnumbered.
I turn to the others and whisper.
"Suggestions?"

Pulling out his binoculars, Mark began scouting out what the Bandra grunts were doing, and he asks Kirlia, -How many people can you count?- Because he didn't know who was in the buildings... though if Bandra were here, they probably had prisoners doing work for them. So a head count might not tell them how many grunts there were.

Keeping his own voice low, Mark tells the others, "Alright, we're definitely outnumbered... but we're also unnoticed. If we can take down a few grunts before we go in, it will even the odds..." Biting at his bottom lip, he adds, "Maybe be ready for some grunts to have Unknown. According to Kirlia, they could potentially be summoning and channeling Unknown through them."

Mark and Matt are able to make out five figures in the camp; Kirlia informs Mark there’s a sixth in one of the tents. All the people visible are wearing Bandra uniforms but none are dressed as a Taskmaster, though the boasting Grunt certainly acts as though he’s in charge – he twirls a Pokeball and answers one of the other Grunt’s questions with a confident tone of voice, as though sure he won’t be contradicted. The camp is otherwise empty of humans; as she is still monitoring his thoughts Kirlia reminds Mark the Grunt said the prisoners were all dead – though none of the group can see any corpses in evidence.

Mark, through his binoculars, can make out of few other details – there’s a flat spot where a couple collapsed boxes have been stacked, a few pieces of mining equipment scattered around, and he can clearly see the Pokemon cowering at the confident Grunt’s feet is a Snorunt.

((Gnomes, give me a roll on a d20 – your target is 7 or above. Also, those are tents, not buildings. ))

----------------

"Alright, we're definitely outnumbered... but we're also unnoticed. If we can take down a few grunts before we go in, it will even the odds..."

“We aren’t going to be sneaking in and picking a few off with all that light,” Mina pointed out. “And all that loose rock around the camp…if we try to sneak around the edge we’ll make a lot of noise. We’d have to make our assault from here unless we can get to one of those other paths.” Mina wasn’t confident in their abilities to climb the slopes here – not silently and not very fast, anyway.

"Maybe be ready for some grunts to have Unknown. According to Kirlia, they could potentially be summoning and channeling Unknown through them."

Mina frowned, expression thoughtful. “Unown aren’t very dangerous, unless they have a lot of them. They only have one attack. I suppose they could wear us down with numbers, but they can usually do that anyway.” Why would they want Unown? She supposed a gifted trainer could make good use of the little letter Pokemon (she did not count herself there, as she had no idea what that use would be) but Bandra Grunts were…generally not gifted. And that still didn’t answer the question of what they wanted with the stolen Pokemon…

I test the direction of the wind before making a suggestion, "Perhaps if we get upwind and have weepinbell use a little....or a lot.... of sleep powder we can knock them all out and avoid confrontation? It'd make their number advantage meaningless if they all suddenly fall asleep!"

(OoC ~ I'd also suggest using Weepinbells' leaves to muffle footsteps but I reckon it's the rocks potentially shifting and falling down making noise that you were referring too)

Unfortunately Matt realizes after a moment or two the wind is shifting very erratically – possibly due to the mountainous terrain, or a change in weather, but definitely not conductive to spreading a blanket of sleep powder without a very real risk of it ending up in your face.

((And yes, it’s the shifting stone you need to worry about. ))

Mark was looking at the snorunt, doing math in his head and feeling cold dread traveling down his spine as he mutters both out loud and to his Kirlia mentally, "That's Zelgius' pokemon." That was his friend's pokemon. The only way Zelgius would be separated is if he... "He's a prisoner." No. There was something that wasn't clicking in the young trainer's mind, something that he had just learned. "... there is only one other person down there. Sorry Kirlia, I'm just... tired... But Zelg is down there. So we've almost got him a-and we can... go... home..." As he says this, his non-prosthetic limb covers his face, trembling as he refused to admit the obvious to himself.

I sighed but as it was, it can't be helped. I wasn't about to risk giving away our position again, and a swirling wind wouldn't help a sneak attack. I couldn't help but frown at the situation we've found ourselves in. Especially for the Mark. There was the slight chance that his friend could be alive working for Bandra and his pokemon simply refused to accept him anymore. I've witnessed it from personal experience while working for Team Rocket. To gangs like these, pokemon are just weapons, expendable if they're not strong enough to suit their needs.
I place a reassuring hand on Mark's shoulder and say, "Keep your chin up, if they kept your friends' pokemon alive, he might still be! And if he's truely not.... perhaps the little snorunt might help us in our upcoming fight. Speaking of which, I'm ready when you guys are. Give a signal, might need to bring out the others to help if things get too crazy."

”Speaking of which, I'm ready when you guys are. Give a signal, might need to bring out the others to help if things get too crazy.”

“We need a plan first,” Mina reminded in a whisper. “…which tent did Kirlia say they were in? Could we take out whoever is in there quietly?”

Mark points at the tent, not talking now as he looks down at the camp, considering plans. Mentally, he tells Kirlia, ~We need to free Jessia if we can. I... don't want to fight her. How close do you have to be before you can effectively attack the grunt bossing her around with your psychic moves?"~ He also mentally marked how unfortunate it was that Kirlia and their other psychic types didn't know Foresight... it would make an ambush like this much easier if three grunts went down under psychic assault immediately.

After getting Kirlia's response, the pale faced Mark whispers to the other two, "Knocking down the tent should delay whoever is in there. Not sure if we can get close enough without drawing attention. Too much noise from loose rocks coming from up here, too visible if we approach from the road."
