~We need to free Jessia if we can. I... don't want to fight her. How close do you have to be before you can effectively attack the grunt bossing her around with your psychic moves?"~

<Not very close. I could knock that Pokeball out of his hand from here if I tried.>

~Alright, good. So you can take that grunt out of the fight with a few shots of confusion from here.~ Mark mentally confirms, sizing up the rest of the grunts now with a more stern expression. His typical grin had been gone for a while now, replaced with a mask of grim focus. ~So on my mark, hit him until he runs away, collapses, or I tell you to switch targets.~ There was something cold in his mental voice when he gave his pokemon that command, a part of his subconscious having accepted his friend’s death, and wanting to make those responsible for it pay. A part of him that hoped the grunt wouldn’t go down untilhis head exploded... though the sleep deprived boy didn’t consciously think about that, and would have been horrified if he had, if his regret over the helicopter showed anything,

Out loud to the others, he said, “Two waves, the first is our pokemon with speed, flying or ranged moves that can hit the grunts themselves immediately while we move down the slope. Release them as you go down if they aren’t out already. Once we are down on even footing, then we release the rest... and take down any resistance they might have left. More of our team is weak to rock types than fire, so water types should focus on them first, and flying go after fighting.” Having strung all of that together without a single stuttered word, Mark looked at Mina with an expression that matched his mood, and he said, “I’m ready to go when you are.”

Kirlia gives Mark a look that’s obviously concerned – being a Psychic type of an empathic species who is psychically linked to him to boot it would be hard for her not to notice he’s not at his emotional best – but doesn’t argue.

Mina, however, does. “We’re going to blow our element of surprise” The mental again she adds is inaudible but obvious in her tone “if we call anything out.” Apparently she has no other objections, as she doesn’t add anything else.

After a few moments of uneasy silence, the group sneaks into position and waits for the signal…only to realize they didn’t establish any sort of signal. After a moment of awkwardness Ratman charges the occupied tent while Weepinbell immobilizes the Grunt near the campfire with vines.

Both targets start yelling in short order, and if any of remaining Grunts had somehow missed the fact that they were under attack the flash of Pokeballs opening was more than enough to elucidate them. Kirlia belatedly attacks the lead Grunt with a telekinetic shove, causing him to drop the ball in his hand; Jessia panics and begins running around in confusion, squealing at the top of her lungs.

This is as far as the plan gets; the lack of coordination means that not everyone gets their Pokemon out at the same time, and by the time the newly-sent out Pokemon materialize and get their direction the remaining Grunts have called out their own Pokemon to fend them off.

((In addition to Pokemon already out, Mina’s sending out Pidgey and Oodramer.
Jack sends out Snover.

The lead Grunt, the one in the tent, and the one wrapped up by Weepinbell are all conscious but have been sufficiently distracted/imobilized that they haven’t sent anything out yet.

As no one gave me any clear instructions as to what additional Pokemon they’re sending out (and no, ‘fast, ranged, or flying’ is not sufficiently specific; I am not combing through your Pokemon lists for you because running your character is your job) or what attacks they’re using or who they’re targeting, your surprise round is now over. And since Snover is now out due to having a ranged attack…))

(OoC ~ Sorry I've been in a bit of a panic focusing on IRL events and have obviously been lazy as far as this. Though I was also hoping to not have to lead the charge as it went pretty badly last time... Sorry)

"Ratman use Crunch on Twiggin, Weepinbell, Vine Whip that Quagsire ASAP, try and take it down in one shot! Taillow, Poli, Wythir, come out and help, we'll need all the help we can get." Pausing as I look at the opponents pokemon for a moment with my eyebrows furrowing. "Flaaffy you come out too, you need some battle experience, perhaps you'll even knock out an enemy pokemon and not faint yourself! I have faith in you buddy!"

((You can call for attacks when you first send a Pokemon out; it’s switching that takes up a turn.))

Most of Matt’s Pokemon mill around waiting for instructions as the first round of attacks are exchanged. Skarmory likewise is eyeing Mark with some confusion.

Houndoom uses Bite!
Wispaferyn A is hit for 69 damage!
Wispaferyn A uses its held Chahal Berry to restore 20 HP!

Primeape uses Low Kick!
It’s super effective!
Houndoom is hit for 94 damage!
Houndoom faints!

Wispaferyn A uses Ember!
It’s super effective!
Snover is hit for 99 damage!
Snover faints!

Wispaferyn B uses Helix Flame!
It’s super effective!
Weepinbell is hit for 51 damage!

The enemy Pokemon impacts Weepinbell with enough force to break the vines holding the campfire Grunt captive. The Grunt doesn’t sound terribly happy to be freed at the moment, alternating between trying to wriggle out of the severed vines and trying to pat out his smouldering clothes.

Wispaferyn C uses Ember!
It’s super effective!
Weepinbell is hit for 73 damage!
Weepinbell faints!

Twiggin uses Magical Leaf!
Critical hit!
It’s super effective!
Horsea is hit for 210 damage!
Horsea faints!

There’s a wet snap as something very obviously breaks and Horsea goes flying; Jack hastily recalls the Water type before the Pokemon can incur more damage.

Ratman uses Crunch!
Twiggin is hit for 28 damage!

Sandslash uses Defense Curl!
Sandslash’s Defense rises!

Pidgey uses Gust!
It’s super effective!
Primeape is hit for 34 damage!

Grandpa uses Water Pulse!
It’s super effective!
Graveler B is hit for 128 damage!
Graveler B faints!

Kirlia flings another shower of stones at the head Grunt. One of them lands a solid hit, managing to stun the man, though he’s not out for the count yet.

Tentacool uses Bubblebeam!
It’s super effective!
Wispaferyn A is hit for 30 damage!
Wispaferyn A faints!

Oodramer uses Bubblebeam!
It’s super effective!
Graveler A is hit for 127 damage!
Graveler A faints!

Quagsire uses Mud Bomb!
Kirlia is hit for 28 damage!

Jessia is still running around the battlefield in a panic, but in a brief moment of clarity she seems to recognize Mark and makes a beeline for him, still screaming in Pokespeak.

Quagsire is buffeted by the hail for 5 damage!
Primeape is buffeted by the hail for 5 damage!
Wispaferyn B is buffeted by the hail for 5 damage!
Wispaferyn C is buffeted by the hail for 5 damage!

Skarmory is buffeted by the hail for 4 damage!
Kirlia is buffeted by the hail for 3 damage!
Oodramer is buffeted by the hail for 5 damage!
Pidgey is buffeted by the hail for 4 damage!

((Four rounds of Hail remaining.))

Without Ratman there to distract her, the Grunt who had been in the tent manages to squirm out of the collapsed canvas and calls out her Pokemon to support her fellows. The vine-bound Grunt manages to finish freeing himself a moment later and follows suit.

Hopefully the rain will lessen the embers from those annoying Wispy things. And as they don't seem to have any water pokemon we should benefit from it. Heck we might even get lucky and not have to worry about any pollen attacks from the Gloom, or perhaps any jumping attacks will cause their fighting pokemon to slip and fall!" I say hopefully.

<Mark, what do you want me to do now?> There was a faint edge of hysteria to Kirlia’s thoughts, not helped at all by Mark’s apparent mental BSoD.

Having reached the bottom of the hill, Mark, in his somewhat fragile mental state, had moved to get to Jessia, and had completely forgotten about giving his pokemon orders in the mean time. In his mind, the pokemon had needed his protection, and That required him to get to her. Now that he had, the rest of the battle became clear to him past his mental haze, and he saw Skarmory go down and heard the desperation in Kirla’s mental voice. These facts focused them, and that cool focus that came with battle settled over him. Colder than usual.

Feeling echoes of lingering pain from the hit his psychic type had taken, Mark recalled skarmory and mentally commanded, <Kirlia, well done. I need you to duck down and get cover now, something that will hide you completely, and I want you to use double team.> hearing the terror in Jessia’s pokespeak had brought a cold note to his now-focused mental voice, and as he tucked away Skarmory’s pokeball and pulled out his remaining three, the boy couldn’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment and frustration that he’d left ariados behind. Chevlain was still recovering, so why did he have a spot on his team reserved for her? Idiot.

Sending out Swelliw, Lapras and Corphish, with the Loch Ness monster pokemon a bit behind him, closer to the cliff than combat, Mark commanded his three pokemon as he began moving back, Jessia in tow.

“Lapras, use sing on both sandslashes and Quagsire.” Those three should be slower than his water type, and his allies didn’t exactly have high defense teams so the sandslashes were definitely a priority- wait, what was that last word he said? Crap. And they had just lost their grass type. That was going to be difficult to deal with. “Swellow, use wing attack on the machoke. Corphish, use bubble beam on those two wispaferyn (C and D).” Turning now to the pokemon clinging to his leg as he pulled back to the others, Mark ran through all the move sets he’d ever memorized to try and remember what she knew. “Jessia, we’re getting you out of here, but I need you to use powered snow on that twiggin if you can.”

"Oh geeze..... Flaafy I was really hoping you'd have more pop in your jolts then that..."I say looking down at the little electric lamb somewhat forlornly."We need to do better to get out of this in one piece so no more of our allies get hurt Flaafy, Thunder Wave that Primeape. Ratman quick attack Wyspaferyn C, Taillow you get the other one with a quick attack as well. Wythir, Buck on that Sandslash B, Poli I'm going to need you to take a hit, Pidgey went down for you, I'm going to use a super potion on your Swellow, Mark. Might need it to take out that Primeape and Gloom!" I yell at him hoping through the chaos that he understands what I'm saying. Though come to think of it, if that Gloom isn't listening to that Bandra grunt, perhaps it's level is too high for him to control? Or perhaps it's not his pokemon? Hmmm, well, it's worth a shot....
"Hey Gloom! Are you a stolen pokemon? Would you like to get back to your owner? I mean, there's all the possibility that you're not, but IF you are, and you help us defeat these guys, I'll do everything I can to get you back to your original owner! You can count on it and I'll do my best to keep you out of harm's way as far as the rest of this battle goes. How about it?"

*OoC ~ Fingers crossed! *

Wincing as Lapras goes down immediately and the rest of his team takes a bit of a beating, Mark recalls the water type before giving out his next commands. "Alright guys, just hold on a little bit longer, we're almost done. Swellow," Looking at Matt, he tells his bird, "Go to him so that he gan give you a potion, and then use wing attack on Primape. Corphish, use bubble on both of the remaining Wispaferyn and the Sandslashes. Jessia, use powdered snow on Quagsire, Primape and that Sandslash (A)"

For a moment he mused on whether or not Kirlia could use his vision to target her attacks, but given the situation they are in he decided not to risk experimentation. <Kirlia, we need to take down this Primeape. Use confusion on it and duck back into cover if you can.>

Corphish can be seen chewing something, then her wounds heal slightly.

Corphish uses held Oran Berry to restore 10 HP!

((Should have triggered that earlier. o.o You guys are allowed to remind me if I forget these things!))

“Cosmas, cover me!” Mina pulled out a Super Potion ((Giving up Cosmas’ attack to use a Super Potion on Corphish))

Mark can feel Kirlia’s minor annoyance at being unable to sightshare yet ((you need 200 Special Attack between the two of you for that – which as Mark’s not a telepath himself means Kirlia needs a Special Attack of 200)) but scoffs at the thought of missing.

<You remember I know Magical Leaf, don’t you?>

Matt uses a Super Potion! ((2 remaining))
Swellow’s HP was restored by 50 HP! (( 54 HP total. ))

Mina uses a Super Potion! ((1 remaining))
Corphish’s HP was restored by 50 HP (( 67 HP total. ))

Ratman uses Quick Attack!
Wispaferyn C is hit for 15 damage!

Taillow uses Quick Attack!
Wispaferyn D is hit for 15 damage!

Swellow uses Wing Attack!
It’s super effective!
Primeape B is hit for 41 damage!

Primeape B uses Seismic Toss!
Corphish is hit for 28 damage!

Wythir uses Buck!
Sandslash B was hit for 4 damage!
Sandslash B was hit for 6 damage!
Hit 2 times!
Wythir’s Speed returns to normal!

Unfortunately the Sandslash’s tough hide, combined with a defensive boost and no type advantage means Wythir’s attack barely scratches it.

Wispaferyn D uses Silver Wind!
It’s super effective!
Oodramer is hit for 58 damage!
Oodramer faints!

Sandslash A uses Rollout!
It’s super effective!
Swellow is hit for 218 damage!
Swellow faints!

There’s a definite crunch noise as Swellow goes down under the Ground type’s attack. The Flying type looks quick flattened when the dust clears.

Kirlia uses Confusion!
It’s super effective!
Critical hit!
Primeape uses held Payapa Berry to half the damage! ((And half of double damage is normal damage, so…))
Primeape is hit for 37 damage!

Corphish uses Bubble!
It’s super effective!
Sandslash A is hit for 24 damage!
It’s super effective!
Critical hit!
Sandslash B is hit for 56 damage!
Sandslash B faints!
It’s super effective!
Wispaferyn C is hit for 16 damage!
Wispaferyn C faints!
It’s super effective!
Wispaferyn D is hit for 20 damage!
Wispaferyn D faints!

The Gloom appears to consider Matt’s words, then after a moment:

Gloom uses Absorb!
It’s super effective!
Quagsire is hit for 50 damage!
Gloom restored 5 HP! ((Back up to max health. ))

Flaafy uses Thunderwave!
Primeape is Paralyzed!
It may not be able to attack!

Jessia uses Powder Snow!
Quagsire is hit for 10 damage!
It’s super effective!
Sandslash A is hit for 21 damage!
Sandslash A faints!
Critical hit!
Primeape B is hit for 18 damage!

Quagsize uses Slam!

Despite being paralyzed, Poli manages to wriggle out of the way of the ponderous Water type’s attack. ((Attack missed! ))

Sandshrew uses Rollout!
It’s not very effective…
Primeape is hit for 13 damage!

The fight being obviously lost by this point, the Grunts with Pokemon remaining recall them and all five of them take off into the dark.

Nodding in thanks to Mina for the last-second heal and defense, which likely helped decide the battle with Corphish effectively finishing the rest of the grunt's offensive line, Mark runs over to check on Swellow as he responds to Kirlia's question. <Of course I do, but we needed to take care of the high-physical attack fighting type that was tearing up our low-defense teams one by one. And we really just had you and Swellow to do it at that point, and Confusion is your best psychic type move right now. That said...> Watching the grunts running, Mark commands, <Multi-target is better for ensuring none get away. Magic leaf as many as you can, aim for the lower legs.> Once again his mental command had taken on a cold note, though at this point, after all the emotions that he'd been feeling, all of the grief, rage and stress, it was more of a numb cold than blood thirst.

Crouching by Swellow, Mark looks over at Jessia for a second before fully inspecting his loyal bird companion and command, "Jessia, make sure none of them get away! Use powdered snow on the ones farthest along to slow them down so that Kirlia can make sure they can't run." And with that, his poor pokemon who took almost 4x his max health in one hit is checked.

((Before I forget:

All Pokemon that participated that are below level 25 gain 2 levels, all other Pokemon that participated gain 1 level. I’ll try to update stats, and get up any new attacks etc. in the OoC thread in the next day or so, in the mean time don’t forget to allocate your EVs!

Gnomes, this includes Jessia for you – she’s now level 22. Note that she still has the EV allocations she got from Zelgius. I’ll get her stat block up with the attacks.))

The Grunts go down with satisfying speed, and Mina goes over with her duct tape to bind and gag them. The boss Grunt Kirlia knocked out gets the same treatment, then Mina’s Cosmas and Sandshrew are set as guards, with both of them directed to use their Defense-boosting attacks until their protections are as high as they can go in case of returning patrols.

Mark notices fairly quickly that Swellow is, at least, still breathing. A quick scan with the Pokedex, however, reveals a concussion that won’t go away with rest and Potions. ((Note from the DM: Swellow will behave as if Confused while in combat until the concussion is healed. This is along the same lines of stat damage; it’ll go away with time, but we’re talking in-game days, and a Pokemon Center will speed recovery.))

----------------

Once the Grunts were rounded up and dealt with, Mina started digging through her pack. She had a Berry to cure Poison and a Berry to cure Sleep, but no Cheri Berry to cure Paralysis with. Typical. Wait! This will work. She had a Paralyze Heal. She fished it out and offered it to Matt, motioning to his poor, battered Poliwag.

((Placeholder for party interaction here. ))

After the Pokemon were patched up as best as could be managed Mina gathered with the remaining two trainers away from the Grunts – hopefully far enough away to avoid being overheard.

“We need to decide what to do next.”

Inside her head Mina was screaming about that, accusations and frustration reverberating into an incoherent, but angry and irritated mess. But in the undercurrent of exhaustion and shielded by it from the emotional miasma, more logical thought processes flowed, and those were what she voiced.

“I don’t think we can accomplish our original mission now; we can’t take another fight like that. We only have about half our Pokemon in fighting shape—“ minus a good number of their heavy hitters, though Mina didn’t say so aloud “—we still have to find those stolen Pokemon, and after that we have to get ourselves and the Pokemon back to friendly civilization. I don’t think we can do it. If that Taskmaster the patrol mentioned is around here we’re dead. If we stay here too long, someone’s going to come back here and find us, and then we may be dead anyway. If we carve our way back through the mountains right now, we might run into more patrols or wild Pokemon and then we may STILL be dead. On top of that we have prisoners and I don’t know what we’re going to do with them.” Mina took a deep breath and let it out again. “Ideas?”

"Well I'm going to keep my promise to that Gloom, where's it's pokeball? It's coming with us. If there's any other stolen pokemon here that want to be free of these goons, now's your chance to let us know!" I'm not sure if they can hear me, but hopefully the Gloom will react in a positive manner as it did before. I glance down at the poor, battered Poliwag and nod as it happily consumes the offered potion from Mina.
"I propose we take all stolen pokemon with us back to town, as well as any good loot from these jerks. We might also want to hasten our way back to town, who knows if Jack ran into any trouble on his way back." I say kicking dirt at the Bandra grunts.

Mark recalls his concussed bird, planning to switch him out later for... well, probably Jessia or Inkle if he had to be honest about it, but he'd decide that in the morning. With that 'cheery' thought, Mark made his way over to the lead grunt to search his pokemon team for any of the rest of Zelgius' team.

A wave of exhaustion would take the young man at that moment, and he almost falls over next to the grunt he's inspecting. The thought that this guy could have Zelgius' other pokemon, and Mark's Aaron, was something that he could focus on to stay awake, and he used that to command Kirlia to come down and join him and ask her, <If I had you teleport away with one of these grunts, would you be able to use our psychic link to teleport back to me, despite not being intimately familiar with this location?> They had hit their enemy's base, and had taken down a few of their ground forces. If he could help it, Mark was going to ensure that the grunts defeated in this battle stayed out of future battles. Hopefully so that they could be put into prison by the ranger instead.

((Later))

When Mina asked her question, he would nod once and tell her, "We need to pull back, obviously. And we need to teleport back to the pokemon center if we can. Can't risk any patrols along the way. Matt... do you have any pokemon who can teleport?" Looking at Mina, he tells her, "And I'm going to need you and Natu to help me out as well. I'm also going to need help dragging the grunts here into one of the bigger tents, just in case someone comes around while the thing is going on..."
