Matt:
A quick scan with the Pokédex later you’ve successfully located Gloom’s Pokéball among the mess of Grunts. ((IIRC you don’t have the App for telling if the Pokémon was stolen, but you can tell what’s in them and there’s only one Gloom, so… )) None of the other Grunt Pokémon respond, but as they’re all recalled and mostly unconscious, this isn’t exactly surprising.

----------------

Mark:
((Minor reminder that you usually lose the slot when your Pokémon are recovering from major injuries. You got a pass with Chevalin because her being badly injured was obviously no doing of Mark’s.))

Worryingly, there is no sign of your Aron or Avotre.

<If I had you teleport away with one of these grunts, would you be able to use our psychic link to teleport back to me, despite not being intimately familiar with this location?>

Kirlia is indignant. <I could find this place again without you, thank you!>

((She doesn’t have to be intimately familiar with every rock and crevice; having visited this spot is sufficient to Teleport to it.))

----------------

Group:

((-1 Paralyze Heal for Mina, 2 remaining. Poli is no longer Paralyzed.))

"I propose we take all stolen pokemon with us back to town, as well as any good loot from these jerks. We might also want to hasten our way back to town, who knows if Jack ran into any trouble on his way back."

“Sounds good.” Mina couldn’t remember which of the Seventy Maxims it was, only that “pillage, then burn” was in there somewhere. And if they couldn’t do something about the Taskmaster and the stolen Pokémon right now, they could at least deprive Bandra of resources.

"We need to pull back, obviously. And we need to teleport back to the pokemon center if we can. Can't risk any patrols along the way. Matt... do you have any pokemon who can teleport? And I'm going to need you and Natu to help me out as well.” Mina nodded and called the Pokémon in question out so he could listen too. “I'm also going to need help dragging the grunts here into one of the bigger tents, just in case someone comes around while the thing is going on..."

Wait, what? “Teleport doesn’t take that long,” Mina objected, wondering if her muzzy-headedness was making her overlook something obvious.

((We went over it in the OoC but Mina doesn’t have access to that. Let me know if you just want me to gloss over it IC.))

From his perch on Mina’s shoulder, Natu fluffs himself up to appear bigger – not that it makes much difference, as he’s half the size his already-small species usually is – and makes what are obviously supposed to be spooky noises. “Stop it,” Mina grumbles under her breath, at which point Natu un-fluffs and contrives to look innocent.

To Matt, she says, “I dunno, a Typhlosion could control you too, if it threatened to set you on fire whenever you did something it didn’t like.” Muttering out loud, more-or-less to herself she adds, “I suppose it would be easier and less obvious for a Psychic type…”

There is a brief interruption as Poli starts to glow very brightly. When the glow clears, she’s evolved into Poliwhirl.

If their trainers hear about it, perhaps they'll come looking for them and maybe unite against Bandra." I scratch my chin thoughtfully, though perhaps it sounds better than what could potentially happen. I mean if Bandra also heard about it and were made a laughing stock that some kids and an ole codger raided some camp of theirs, they might take it out on more innocent people.

((Did that on purpose. Mark just hit an absent-minded brain fart.))

<Jeeze, that will show me for trying to make sure a plan will work.> Mark responds, somewhat thrown off by jut how much sass he was getting from his psychic type tonight.

Not finding any of the other pokemon that he and Zelgius had lost, Mark would almost collapse, a wave of grief hitting him before he could master himself. Rubbing at his eyes with his organic hand, Mark shakes his head and clears his throat. "No... no... that's not- Sorry. I didn't explain myself well." Looking at Mina, he tells her, "I was going to h-have Kirlia teleport grunts between here and the pokemon center, moving them t-two at a time. It will require multiple trips. Once she is finished w-with that, t-then I'll have her bring me and Matt back. But one of us should go ahead and warn Nurse Joy t-that some B-Bandra prisoners are incoming, so that she's not taken completely by surprise and gets a c-chance to call the ranger... or at the very least g-get some rooms ready to hold them. With a shrug, Mark leaves that as its own explanation and adds, "T-Though if you could send Natu back with Kirlia to help get goons moved to the pokemon center faster, I w-would appreciate it."

There. That sounded like a more thorough explanation to his mind.

Mina glanced over at Mark, expecting him to field that one since she couldn’t communicate with her Natu except by the traditional method of her talking and him using Pokéspeak and body language.

"No... no... that's not- Sorry. I didn't explain myself well. I was going to h-have Kirlia teleport grunts between here and the pokemon center, moving them t-two at a time. “We can call the Ranger ourselves,” Mina pointed out, pulling out her Pokédex to do just that. ((Mark and Mina got his number when they picked up their bounty rewards, remember.)) “But yeah we should let Nurse Joy know too, since we’ll be dumping a bunch of Bandra goons in her Pokémon Center. Sounds good otherwise. I’ll go.

Matt, since Mark will be ferrying and I’ll be guarding the other end, would you mind searching the camp and piling up anything useful?” Mina reasoned his Poliwag – Poliwhirl – would probably be more help than her Cosmas and her Sandshrew if any patrols returned anyway.

Once she got a response either way, she finished dialing the Ranger and hit ‘call’.

“Hi, Ranger Wain? It’s Mina, from the other day. Yes, I know what time it is. We got a bunch of Bandra goons tied up and we—we’re in the Shatterhigh Mountains.” Mina’s voice turned puzzled in a why-are-you-asking sort of way. “No, we’re not crazy. We’ll have them at the Ceris Pokémon Center in a little bit, can you pick them up? Yes, we’re mostly fine. I’m sorry about the paperwork. Okay, see you in a little while.”

She hung up. “We should be good with the Ranger, anything you need from me before I go?”

Group:

Once she ascertains that no one needs her immediate presence, Mina recalls all her Pokémon except for Natu and has him take her back to the Ceris Pokémon Center.

After a reasonable length of time, Mark gets a text on his Pokédex:

Mina sent you a message!
All set on this end. Let’s see if we can get this wrapped up before sunrise.

----------------

Mina:

It was still jarring to vanish from one place and instantly reappear in another, but Mina decided, after catching sight of the nurse almost instantly on arrival after such a harrowing fight, that she could get used to it.

“Nurse Joy?”

The nurse started at the sound of her voice. “…I’m sorry I didn’t see you come in. Can I help you?”

It wasn’t until she noticed the look the nurse was giving her that Mina realized she must look like quite the sight – soaking wet from Poli’s rain, muddy from the mountain trail, hair escaping its usual ponytail from multiple fights and the aforementioned trail…

Unfortunately, Mina was tired, irritable, and not very big on tact, so she wasted no time on niceties. “My Pokémon are injured and we have prisoners incoming.” The ‘wait, what?’ look on the nurse’s face looked like it required some explanation, so Mina explained: “We had a fight with Bandra, I already told the Ranger and he’ll be meeting us here.”

Mina watched the gears in the nurse’s head jam for a moment, then gradually start moving again as the latter finally nodded. Mina handed over her injured Pokémon for healing, set Cosmas and Sandshrew on guard as before, then sent Natu back to help Mark.

----------------

Mark:

Mina’s Natu reappears shortly after her text, and he and Kirlia manage to ferry the bound and unconscious Grunts away without issue. Once they’re gone, you notice Matt is about done looting the camp.

----------------

Matt:

Most of your search is productive but uneventful: no surprise Pokémon attacks, no traps, no Grunts who somehow managed to sleep through the fight.

((Loot time

1 small tent
2400 PD
10 Unown Tiles (C, G, H, I, I, R, X, Z, Z, !)
Rare Bone
6 Pokeballs
1 Spectral Ball
1 Venom Ball
4 Gems (1 Fairy, 2 Grass, 1 Ice)
6 Mining Kits
10 Berries (3 Chahal, 2 Rawst, 2 Payapa, 2 Persim, 1 Shuca)
Damp Rock))

While looting, you notice there is a tent nicer than the rest. It’s larger and better quality, and has more creature comforts inside such as a portable heater, a coffee maker, and fancy creamers instead of powdered milk – still camping gear, but good camping gear. There is only one cot inside (in comparison to some of the other tents which had several crammed together), and an empty space where a second cot obviously used to be.

Here you find a several items of note: a couple of Revives stashed in the bedding of the remaining cot, a few water bottles by the coffee maker and in the corner near the empty space, a very heavy combination safe. On top of the safe is an aged piece of paper, which on close examination appears to be a page town out of a book. It reads:

Quote:
And they went up to the Shrine for the Rites of [calling? summoning], bringing the runes of the [unverified? misunderstood?], and the ritual knife, and their braziers and their sacrifices. And they spilled the runes unto the altar and spilled the blood of sacrifices unto the runes using the prescribed cuts; a dozen times a dozen was blood spilled, all for naught. And they did despair. But then his priest Hestra did speak to them, and when she had spoken she did plunge the knife unto her heart, and with her blood, freely given did they bring forth the [horde? army?].

((Further loot!

2 Revives
3 Fresh Water
Note on sacrifices
Heavy Safe (ONLY if you find a way to move it; it’s too heavy to just throw in your makeshift sack and cart off with the rest of the goodies)))

I wave Mark over towards where the Heavy Safe is.

"I don't believe any of us have a pokemon strong enough to bring this with, but I was thinking that perhaps we could still obtain the valuables inside. Wythir being a ghost type should, in theory, be able to just phase through the safe in the same manner a Gastly could. Now, if your psychic type were able to read Wythir's mind, or to see what Wythir see's inside the Safe, do you suppose it could teleport inside the safe and bring out the goodies inside? Otherwise, the only other option I can see is potentially freezing the safe solid and then having a pokemon smash it, but that could destroy anything inside as well."
I scratched my chin, brow furrowing. I suppose I could try using Ratman's sensitive ears to listen for the audible click in trying to simply open the safe, but he may not understand what's going on, and I doubt any of the Bandra goons would know the combination... Although, perhaps the head honcho of the band might. Suppose it'd be possible.
"Or do you suppose the leader of the group we captured might have the code to unlock the safe? Do you reckon a psychic type could find that sort of information out?"

Mark would make a mental note to Kirlia to ask each of the grunt's pokemon if they had been stolen from their original trainers. They could get a better description of those trainers in the morning, after he'd managed to get some sleep. Arceus, he just wanted to sleep...

And that exhaustion would dull his response when he finally managed to answer Matt after thinking about his question for a few seconds. "No, I d-don't think Kirlia could... she talks to me psychically b-because we are connected, but even that connection i-isn't strong enough yet for one of us to see through the e-eyes of the other." Considering the safe, Mark would think for a second and say, "I mean... it can't weigh more than two grunts, right? M-maybe Kirlia could move it by itself, a-and then come back for u-us? But I don't think... no. The h-head grunt wasn't one of their real leaders. A s-sergeant, maybe. Not the owner o-of this tent."

Still, Mark would ask Kirlia, <Can you read someone's mind? You know... besides mine.> Just for future reference, to know what his infinitely more and more useful psychic type could do if the situation called for it.

"Oh... uh... and I think w-we should probably bring all of the healing items, balls a-and at least one of each tablet with us. A-And that journal. That journal for sure." If they were research notes or the notes of the man who'd been in charge here, then they could prove invaluable to discovering Bandra's purpose and countering their plans.

Mark was already picking up a mining kit as he said this. Oh hey, he didn't have one of these! And the gems could be useful. If he knew what they were used for. Probably money. Mark could use some money. He owed Mina dinner. Why had he thought of that, of all things, at this moment? Regardless, into his pack they went!

Kirlia’s initial response wasn’t in words, more the mental equivalent of a hand gesture indicating ‘so-so’.

<I can detect the general flow of their thoughts, but not the exact contents – I can tell you if they’re lying, or frightened, or courting, but numbers like you’re thinking of? No.> There’s a sort of mental echo or undercurrent to the telepathy that feels like ‘not yet’. <Not with accuracy.>

Mark nods to his pokemon, forgets to tell that to Matt, and stuffs the last gem into his pack before he asks Kirlia, <Alright. Second question, think you could teleport this safe to the pokemon center? Gives us more time to figure out... stuff...> At that point, coherent thought had basically been stripped from Mark by emotional and physical exhaustion, something Kirlia would be painfully aware of, and her trainer just sits down where he is and lets out a long sigh.

Kirlia vanishes with the safe and returns a few moments later for Mark and Matt. The two of you reappear in the Ceris Center, where Mina and her Pokémon are standing guard over the Grunts and Nurse Joy is looking a little upset.

“What is this?” She gestures to the safe. “Get it out of my lobby, this is a hospital not a storage yard!”

The group is able to transport the safe into one of the overnight rooms, and Mark and Matt are both able to get most of their Pokémon healed. (The nurse is remarkably understanding given the circumstances, but informs Mark that Swellow is going to have to stay in intensive care for about 24 hours to heal and make sure no permanent damage was done.) Matt transfers the Berries to Mina when the latter offers to stand guard until the Ranger arrives, and the boys are able to get off to sleep.

The group awakens about 8 AM.

After waking and obtaining my bearings, I gradually pull out everything I gathered from back at the camp and wait for Mark and Mina to wake up from their slumber. While I wait, I approach the counter to chat with Nurse Joy.

" Nurse Joy, how are my pokemon? Is everyone alright? And how about the ones that were stolen, especially that Gloom? Are they okay as well? Also, out of curiosity... How do pokemon that are stolen get healed? I mean, if they do it themselves, that's a lot of potions and other items being used to restore inconveniences. I also feel obligated to pay you 1000 for putting up with us as well as those Bandra goons. We must have put quite the burden upon you. My sincerest apologies." I say with a bow. "When they wake up, please allow them to take what they desire and sell what ever junk is left. Let them know to divvy the money up for three, I'll be back in a while to check upon the pokemon again. Also, would you happen to know where the Ranger went?"

Come to think of it, I didn't even check to see if any of the stolen pokemon were even here. They could have been taken back to the Ranger station for all I knew. But what I DID know is that I had to keep my promise to Gloom. No matter the cost.

Mina (previous night):

Mina stood guard over the Grunts with her Pokémon until the Ranger arrived, at which point she gave him a tired little wave.

“Looks like you and your friends have been busy,” he said by way of greeting. Mina was too tired for small talk so she just nodded. “Anything in particular I need to know?”

“There was a Gloom we think was stolen and a Snorunt I know used to belong to someone else because I met the previous trainer.” Mina was too woozy and tired to do anything other than cut directly to the point and hopefully get this mess over with so she could get to sleep. But the Ranger’s own yawn prompted her to add, “Mark’s Kirlia can talk to him and might be able to help figure out what happened to the original trainers, but it’s too late right now.” She realized she was swaying a little and consciously steadied herself.

“I understand. You kids know if you’re going to keep making a habit of all this, you could put in for Bounty Hunter licenses.”

The look Mina gave him said clearly, ‘I just went traipsing through the mountains for several hours with a hard fight at the end of it, please just give me the information and don’t make me ask for it.’

“Bounty Hunter licenses will give you a little more legal room if you need to get rough with these sorts. Most in Helnith right now are understanding with the war, but there’s always a few bent on making life difficult for everybody. Plus you can sometimes get paid if you bring in someone on a Wanted poster or find someone’s lost Pokémon if they posted a reward for it. You might want to consider it.”

Enough of this penetrated the fog in Mina’s skull for her to decide that sounded like a good idea so she nodded. They made conversation a little longer but neither party was really awake enough for frivolous small talk and as soon as the Ranger finished carting away the Grunts Mina stumbled off to find her room. She had just enough energy to check her Berry (not even sprouted yet) and then went to bed.

----------------

Group:

“Nurse Joy, how are my pokemon? Is everyone alright? And how about the ones that were stolen, especially that Gloom? Are they okay as well?”

“Your Pokémon are fine. The Gloom and the Snorunt are with Ranger Wain in his office,” the nurse gestures in the appropriate direction. ((Note for Gnomes: I have no objection to Mark keeping Jessia if you want, but there should logically be a at least a little paperwork involved. ))

”Also, out of curiosity... How do pokemon that are stolen get healed? I mean, if they do it themselves, that's a lot of potions and other items being used to restore inconveniences.”

“If they have a Pokeball and aren’t seriously injured, they go through the machine same as normal trained Pokémon. For Pokémon that don’t, we keep supplies on hand.”

” I also feel obligated to pay you 1000 for putting up with us as well as those Bandra goons. We must have put quite the burden upon you. My sincerest apologies.”

“Don’t be silly, this part of my job. I’ve had to deal with a lot worse. Just don’t make a habit of crashing furniture in my lobby late at night, okay?” The last was accompanied by a wink. Nurse Joy seemed much happier this morning for whatever reason.

"When they wake up, please allow them to take what they desire and sell what ever junk is left. Let them know to divvy the money up for three, I'll be back in a while to check upon the pokemon again.”

“Can do!”

”Also, would you happen to know where the Ranger went?"

“I think he’s still in his office doing paperwork, but if not he usually goes over to the bar for coffee.”

((The previous night))

Mark barely managed to stay awake long enough to listen to the Nurse's prognosis and to give up Jessia until tomorrow, when he could handle the paperwork, and he most certainly didn't make it to his room, instead falling asleep on the lobby couch while Mina and Wane talked about the license and other things. If someone brought him to a bed, then he made it to his room, otherwise he slept from then until midday in that same spot on the couch.

((The next day))

Mark wouldn't wake up by 8. 12:30 rolled around before his emotionally and physically exhausted body finally managed to get up. Fortunately his sleep had been entirely dreamless for once, which likely helped him catch up on sleep as much as he had. Unfortunately, his mental state was still solidly in emotional numbness. His shoulder was sore from leaving the prosthetic in, and that arm's battery needed to be recharged, which encouraged the boy to get up and take the dead thing off, before going to take a long shower.

At 2 pm (after going to the ranger's station to identify which pokemon were stolen and pick up Jessia, and depositing Corphish in his box for a while, until Swellow was well enough to be put there instead) Mark could be found just sitting outside, prosthetic limb in front of him and his journal in his lap, looking up at the sky. He had a pen out, but he wasn't drawing anything. Kirlia, Lapras and Jessia are out next to him, with the little snorunt tucked under her new trainer's arm.

I casually walk over to the door and knock, asking aloud, "Ranger Wain, are you in? I've a couple questions I'd like to ask. In private if you don't mind."

Adding Mina's bit

Mark:

((Morning: ))

Someone must have moved you, because you wake up in an overnight room.

((Later while not-drawing: ))

You’ve been sitting there a while before you notice that Lapras is trying to peer over the top of the grass at something. Kirlia seems a little annoyed over your link; she chatters at him in Pokespeak and you can tell she’s saying something along the lines of ‘There’s nothing there!’

----------------

Matt:

"Ranger Wain, are you in? I've a couple questions I'd like to ask. In private if you don't mind."

“Come on in,” the Ranger gestures at a chair, inviting you to take a seat. “What do you need?”

As expected there are forms on the desk in front of him. The Gloom from the night before is sitting in the corner, playing with its feet, and the Growlithe from your previous visit is still here too, but healthier and without the leash. Every now and then Ranger Wain reaches down to pet the Fire type, who seems to enjoy the attention.

----------------

Mina (and Matt when he gets time, Mark is asleep for this so Gnomes speak up OoC!):

After waking up, checking her Berry (still not sprouted and she was having second thoughts about planting the Liechi now), and getting a little breakfast Mina met up with Matt to split the previous night’s spoils. Natu was perched on her head, watching with his typical penetrating stare. Mark was still fast asleep.

“Okay, splitting the money three ways we get 800 PD each. I was going to take three of the basic Pokéballs if you two don’t mind, and maybe one of the Fresh Waters, and between those and the Berries I think that’s enough for me. Matt, either you or Mark should keep the Damp Rock in any case since you both have a Pokémon with Rain Dance. There are a bunch of extra Mining Kits, unless either of you wants another one we should probably sell those or trade them or something – Ranger Wain told me there’s a Geology Club in a city east of here that will take them if the local Mart won’t.”

((Gnomes, you mentioned the tablets but not where Mina could hear so I have to ask OoC, do you want the letters or does gorman get them?))
