Matt:

Partway through your wait you notice a small group of people gather some distance away. About 8:30 one of them checks their wrist and gets the attention of the others, then they all pack up and move off down the route, into the area that had been underwater a few hours ago.

Wincing when that stronger attack hits Lapras, but noticing that even the extra power boost hadn't done much to the tanky water type, Mark lets out a relieved sigh and says, "Alright guys, let's try something different. Hey, Umbreon!" He called to the dark type. "Are you sure you want to keep fighting? If y-you're missing your trainer or something, I'm sure I could help f-find them!" Mark the implications of what you just said are awful, even if you are a sweet boy for offering. "I-I mean... if you want to, we can keep fighting I guess, but... Well, i-if you let me catch you, I'm sure w-we'll be able to find whoever i-it is you're looking for!" Can't hurt to try the diplomatic method! At least, not when the pokemon you are talking to has such a low offensive stat.

Mark:

The Umbreon’s long ears twitch back, and he growls low. Lapras tilts his head, says something back at the Dark type in Pokéspeak. Umbreon growls again, taking an offensive stance. All you can gather from the exchange is that apparently he’s not interested in your offer.

Matt:

This time the water doesn’t hinder you. You’re able to find a Pearl and an unused Dive Ball that got left behind by the tide.

It’s about midnight when you arrive at Tidepath, and the town is quiet and empty-seeming.

((Big white rectangles – Grand Docks (commercial boats – if your cruise ship had made it to port it would have ended up here).
Smaller white rectangles – Little Docks (personal boats).
The big gray rectangles are warehouses.
On the north edge of town, the little gray square is the Mart, the little white square is the Pokémon Center.
In the left block of town, the dark blue square is the Dive Shop, the gold rectangle is the Cruise Charter. The green L-shape is the Pokémon Fan Club. The orange square is the Garden Shop. The lighter blue boxes 1-4 are businesses. The smaller blue boxes 1-6 are houses, most notably the Berry Master’s house at 5.
In the right block of town, the purple rectangle is the City Hall, and the circle is a fountain.
The pink square between City Hall and the docs is the (New) Geology Club Headquarters, the light green rectangle is the Harbor Master’s house/office, the circle is the lighthouse and the yellow rectangle is a bar called the ‘Singing Dewgong’.
On the south side of town, the bright green rectangle is a Ranger Union (that’s right, they have an actual Ranger Union building in this town!) and the purple T-shape is a (human) school.))

Hmm, I reckon I'll meander myself towards the tavern, see what sort of chatter is going on if any, read the store signs to figure out where the geology place is at to sell those mining tools in the morning.

You find the Geology Club across from City Hall and a little south. This time of night it’s dark and quiet, but that isn’t enough to disguise the rather ramshackle nature of the building, nor the distinctly makeshift quality of the sign out front reading “NEW Geology Club Headquarters”.

The tavern, unlike most of the businesses in town, is still open and even has a number of people inside - mostly sailors and dockworkers - drinking, eating and socializing. Most of the local chatter is about Dream; apparently he left town recently, and speculation over where he went is rampant. You also catch a stray question from one patron, directed at a sitting woman off by herself next to an impressive array of empty glasses asking her if she’s had any luck. She only shakes her head, not even looking up from the table.

“Out of towner eh? You came at a good time. You missed Dream but you also missed the invasion from the Spectral Dimension a week ago. We’ve got most of the mess cleaned up now…though I guess with Dream gone Bandra will come knocking any day now.”

The bartender goes back to wiping down the bar, not seeming to have anything else to add.

((Any questions? Otherwise I’ll cut to the Pokémon Center.))

Mark looks at Lapras, almost regretting recalling Kirlia since he didn't have a way to translate what the water type had just said... but he would shrug and say, "Well... I tried talking, I guess..." Before looking at his two pokemon. "Lapras, use Sing again. It'll work one of these days, buddy. And Skarmory, use Arial Ace."

Skarmory looks tremendously puzzled for a moment ((Skarmory doesn’t know Aerial Ace!)) before launching at the Umbreon with a Peck attack.

Umbreon is hit for 13 damage!

Lapras uses Sing!
Attack missed!

Umbreon has apparently grown wise to this tactic, as the Dark flattens briefly against the ground and covers both ears with his paws. Then he springs back to his feet and pounces.

Umbreon uses Pursuit!
Lapras is hit for 11 damage!

Matt:

On questioning further, you learn that the invasion (more of a raid, really, from the description) occurred several days ago: a number of Spectral Dimension Pokémon (mostly Billigruff and Serranix according to the bartender, though as you’ve never heard of either of these species before, that doesn’t mean much) came through one of the rifts to the Spectral Dimension that open in Helnith occasionally. But while Pokémon have wandered between dimensions in this way before (or so the bartender tells you) it’s usually because they got lost, or were obviously curious about what was on the other side. While frequently Shadowed and thus dangerous, there was rarely any deliberate malice to the incursions.

Not so this time, apparently. Unless the tale has grown wildly in the telling, this group attacked swiftly, kidnapping humans and Pokémon alike, paralyzing them with giant mops (the barkeep pauses to assure you that wasn’t a joke) and dragging them back through the rift. And their leader – a big sort-of goat/minotaur monster that was eventually identified by a researcher-type as a Caprigruff – could speak perfect English! And apparently the lady with the long line of empty glasses lost a son to the raid, very sad. At any rate, they were eventually driven back into the rift by Dream, with some minor support from the local trainers.

Dream, it also transpires, is one of the two surviving Elite Four – and on hearing this you recall you actually heard about him before, from Pellana.

Once you’ve had your fill of answers and alcohol, you make your way to the Pokémon Center and check in for the night, awakening about 8 AM.

This early in the morning not much is going on, save a few early birds headed toward the shore with towels and swimsuits to claim spots on the beach.

You find the run-down building again without issue. It’s considerably busier than the night before; there are easily half-a-dozen people loading coolers and…scuba gear?...into the back of a large truck. They’re mostly chatting with each other in a cheerful manner; the occasional glance your way comes with a friendly smile but no special attention.

There’s some quick scattered back-and-forth—“You want to take this Stef?” “Sure, I’ve got it!”—before one of them breaks off and waves you inside.

The interior isn’t any better off from the exterior—torn wallpaper, ripped-up navy blue carpet, chunks missing from the walls, obviously-salvaged furniture. Photos of people in hardhats with digging equipment line the walls, most with damaged frames or cracked glass.

Stef very quickly proves himself to be a cheerful motormouth. “Hi, you said you had mining equipment you wanted to sell? We can pay you for it, lots of our members lost theirs when we had to relocate. Or we’ve got some fossils we could trade you for it, if you’d rather, I’d go for a fossil myself, but I like fossils, I guess you don’t like fossils or you wouldn’t be selling mining equipment. Oh, is that what you’re selling? We can give you 2000 PD for each Kit, if you’re sure you don’t want—“

((2000 PD per spare Kit, OR you can trade the lot of them for one of the following:
--Old Amber
--Ooze Fossil
--Oval Fossil ))

----------------

Mina:

Once the loot was divided Mina stopped by Mark’s room to leave him his cut of the spoils as well as a note about the ‘meet up at the Pokémon Center here in a week’ plan. By this point she noticed the Liechi Berry had finally sprouted:

She took a detour to water it before heading over to the Contest Hall.

She knew she needed more Berries – the variety she had was probably sufficient to make a halfway-decent batch, but the number of them she would need even just to cover her regular team was much higher than what she had. She also wanted the Recipe for Disaster that had been mentioned during the Poffin-making class; against Bandra, they would need every edge they could get, and the boosts from Poffin should be a quick, easy way to close some of that gap.

In theory.

In practice, not so much. The more helpful trainers she asked gave vague answers like ‘rarer Berries tend to make better Poffin’ or ‘you should experiment and see what works for you’ or a rehash of what flavors canceled out which other flavors. A few handed her more common Berries ((+1 Leppa, +2 Wepear, +1 Bluk)). The trainer who gave her the Leppa Berry advised her that the Recipe for Disaster probably wasn’t a single recipe, because no Poffin could be all the flavors at once, and there was probably more than one way to reach it. But while that made a certain amount of sense, it was still terribly vague.

The less-helpful trainers were another story. She had gathered there was something of a rivalry between Coordinators and non-Coordinators; it was counting against her now. A large number of them had just blown her off entirely. One individual had been outright rude; a boy a few years younger than she, obviously one with money as his clothes were new and eye-catching and there were rings on several fingers. He had looked her up and down, smirked, and told her she obviously didn’t need any help.

She was boiling inside at the remark, but Mina got the point at once. She wasn’t dressed like a Coordinator, those sorts tending to be polished, well-dressed and manicured, their clothes fashionable if they weren’t outright costumes. Her clothes were torn and worn and stained, and it wasn’t even the fashionable sort of torn and stained (Mina did not, herself, pay much attention to such trends as a rule and couldn’t tell the difference except for the bloodstains, but presumably there was a difference). She didn’t wear any sort of makeup, no nail polish, and the closest she’d come to wearing perfume in some time was visiting the Pokémon Cologne seller a while back. She didn’t act like a Coordinator. And truthfully she had no interest in being a Coordinator; it was time consuming, looked expensive, and only peripherally related to her actual goals of stopping Bandra and maybe surviving to see the end of the war. She just wanted to cook.

But apparently that wasn’t okay with the ‘in’ crowd of the Contest circuit!

Complicating the issue were the Berries themselves; there were dozens of varieties, and while some had obvious battle utilities and were worth grabbing for that regardless of their flavor qualities, she had no idea what made a good Poffin Berry. Was it okay to have a high Feel rating if it also had a high flavor rating, or was it better to have smaller numbers in both categories and build up more gradually? Should she be looking for Berries that had all their flavor in one area, or was it better to have their flavors more spread out? She didn’t know.

Quantity was also an issue; it took about four Berries to make four Poffin. The best Poffin she’d made so far would max out a Contest category after about five Poffin. Times that by five categories, times that by six Pokémon…about 120 Berries just for her team. And with the way Feel worked, the Poffin would stop working partway through as the nutrients got saturated or whatever it was that happened.

Feel was another issue. If she’d done her math right (which was not certain, although her head was clearer today), she’d need at least five points in a flavor for every point of Feel in the Poffin to hit everything before her Pokémon reached the saturation point, unless she could find another of those pins like Misty had had. That was more than twice what she’d been able to manage with her best Poffin so far.

Needless to say by the time noon rolled around Mina was getting a little frustrated.

The Poffin Blenders were being steadily deserted as people wandered off to lunch; Mina had edged over to one and was debating what to mix when someone tapped her on the shoulder.

She was expecting a Coordinator, or maybe Mark if he was up, but it was neither; it was Elder Rashel.

“You’re the trainer who was battling for Berries the other day.”

It wasn’t a question, but Mina answered anyway. “Yes ma’am.” The Johto trainer was a little wary after the Coordinators.

The Elder smiled. “I’ve seen you here before; you were helping the boy with the Banshy?”

Mina nodded again cautiously, and the two of them spent a few minutes with the Elder asking probing questions about her knowledge and activities while Mina tried to figure out what she was getting at.

Mina:

After several rounds of questioning the Elder broke out into a smile. “As I thought. You have potential. Here, these are for you,” and the Elder dug out a bag and gave it to her.

“Um, thank you?” Mina peered inside the bag, and on seeing a number of Berries inside – mostly ones she recognized, but of the kind that could heal – and was that a – it was! “Thank you!” she repeated with more enthusiasm. Then she looked up and realized somewhat sheepishly the Elder was already leaving.

“You aren’t the first one,” The Elder replied without even looking back. “If you see Pellana again, perhaps see if you can give her some assistance. It took hours to scrape the charcoal from her last attempt out of the Blender.” Elder Rashel turned briefly at the doorway, thus Mina was able to see the disgusted look on her face. “Last I heard, she went to Trainer Hill.” And with that the Elder completed her dramatic exit.

Feeling suddenly self-conscious, Mina scooted off to a private corner to get a better look at her spoils.

*perks up*"I beg your pardon, did you say Dive? What sort of woes do you have about Dive? Isn't it easy to use with a water pokemon?" I looked a bit puzzled, why would a geology club need a Dive HM? Aren't Geologists diggers of dirt? Though I suppose there's dirt in the ocean too. Perhaps they don't have any water pokemon, which would be extremely unusual given they live in a city in the middle of the ocean practically.... Unless they moved here abruptly for some reason.
