Matt:

"I beg your pardon, did you say Dive? What sort of woes do you have about Dive? Isn't it easy to use with a water pokemon?"

“It’s not a problem with using it,” Stef replies. “Or, not exactly anyway. We could use it, except we can’t, because we don’t have it, but we’re supposed to.

When we relocated we found out there wasn’t any good place to dig around here, because all the good mountains are in Bandra’s hands, and we can’t dig around town because there are all the buildings here, see? But somebody, I forget who, realized that nobody builds anything on the seafloor, so we pooled our money together and bought the HM for Dive, so we could keep digging there. But Bandra went and sank the boat it was coming over on. We tried to charter a boat to get it back, because HMs are kind of expensive, but we couldn’t find it.

Then Simon realized we could dig in the high tide zones when they’re dry, and that helped a little, so we don’t need it as much anymore. But Alvin says we should get the HM back anyway, because it’s ours, and we paid for it, and we can only dig during low tide right now. So we chartered another boat and we’re heading out to it right now, actually, did you want to come?”

Also I do not have a pokemon that knows surf. Was simply curious about Dive. Thought I might be able to help in a way, but I've a feeling I'm already supposed to be helping someone else and have forgotten. Sorry, I really must be getting back. Thank you though." I say with a wave as I turn to leave, hopefully the tide will be down yet so I can hustle back to Mark and Mina.

You reach the other shore about 1 PM. On the beach nearby you see a couple of trainers battling, Tropius vs. Oddish. The former wins decisively with a swoop from above the Pokédex identifies as Fly. The Oddish’s trainer slumps off while the trainer of the Tropius – a rather fat fellow in too-tight swim trunks with flaking sunburn on his shoulders – pumps his fist in victory. He takes a moment to treat his Pokémon before he spots you.

“Hey, are you a Pokémon trainer? Battle me!”

Deciding that this umbreon seemed like a bit of a goof, Mark decided to draw on one of the names of a fantasy character from a series he’d been reading. “I’m gonna name you...” He would have originally gone with Tehol, but something told him the umbreon had been through enough that he’d earned a name fitting a more hardened pokemon, rather than a prankster. “Sengar.” A family name, but one that carried with it the weight of a life lived and lost.

Nodding as he settles on this, Mark looked at that ability again, then looked at it again, blinked, and let out a low whistle because wow that was going to be a good ability over-all. Patting Skarmory twice on the flank, he tells his bird, “You did well, bud. Have yourself a quick rest, I’ll heal you back up at the center.” And then he recalled the steel type. Turning to lapras and giving the water dinosaur a stern expression and waggle of his finger, the young man says, “A-And as for you! ... D-Don’t just spray random pokemon i-in the future, okay? Especially if they w-would be sleeping at this t-time of day. It’s rude and makes them a bit grumpy.” Petting lapras on the head anyway before recalling the water type, Mark tells both pokemon, “I think I’m going to give you guys names as well. I-It’s been long enough, a-and you both certainly earned it.”

With all of that done, Mark went to the pokemon center to heal up, check on Chevalin and Swellow, and swap Swellow out for his brand new Umbreon if the bird was doing well enough to be sent on vacation, before going back into the storage room where that safe happened to be hidden. Now how does this thing even open... Pulling out his phone, he texts Mina, saying, "Hey there Sunshine, got a present for you! Meet me at the pkm center, okay?" Maybe she had some ideas?

You get a response back almost immediately.

Mina sent you a message!
Once I get a little sun I’ll be there. Give me about an hour.

----------------

Mina:

Mina took out her Pokédex at once; most of the new acquisitions were healing Berries she already had, but two were both new and unfamiliar and she needed to check growth times in any case.

She frowned thoughtfully at the readout on the Wacan Berry. The Berry itself looked vaguely familiar but she couldn’t think of where she’d seen it before – grocery store? Battle Festival? Neither seemed right…Mina pushed the thought from her mind and focused on the data. It looked useful; she could see Magikarp getting lots of use from these once she’d evolved, and maybe Natu and Pidgey too if they ever stopped fighting the never ending flood of Geodude and Graveler Bandra seemed to possess.

The Roseli Berry gave Mina even more pause. There’s a Fairy type??? She checked her Pokédex and noticed it had been updated, and sure enough; now there was a ‘Fairy type’ listed. Browsing through briefly it looked like this one wasn’t going to be immediately useful for any of her Pokémon. Maybe Houndoom…nope, Fire resisted it. Cosmas though? …maybe, but as Spectral types were weak to Normal moves and those were much more common…Mina didn’t think she’d even seen a Fairy move before. There was no harm in hanging on to it however.

But now she had a decision to make. She had an entire new Berry Planter and about seven days in which to grow things. She wanted to cram as many Berries into that time as she could, and hopefully churn out some Poffin in the process, so Berries with short growth times should probably be her priority. Her new Cheri Berry only took twelve hours…Mina happened to glance at the nearest clock; it was about noon…

Which means it would finish about midnight. Leaving precious hours where nothing was growing unless she stayed up until midnight, which she wasn’t inclined to do for so little reason. And actually, most of the short-growth Berries would run into the same issue. Puzzling over it a little more, Mina finally decided on a Sitrus Berry; those were going to be in high demand regardless, even if she didn’t use them for Poffin. And she still wasn’t sure about what she wanted to do for Poffin.

After stuffing a Sitrus in the new Planter (it was always so much fun watching the little coconut-fiber tablet explode!) and making sure it was wet, Mina finally gave up staring at the Blender waiting for inspiration to happen. Elder Rashel had dropped a pretty unsubtle hint, so Mina stopped by the Pokémon Center for food she could carry and then took off cross-country for Trainer Hill, intending to eat on the way.

((About two hours later…))

Mina was about halfway to Trainer Hill (nose mostly in her Pokédex, mentally trying out Poffin combinations as she went) when she spotted dust on the horizon. Squinting a little, she thought she could make out four-legged creatures in it.

Oh neat, Rhyhorn. She didn’t particularly want one and reasoned they were far enough away they were probably safe to ignore, so Mina did. She was still sufficiently muzzy-headed and distracted she didn’t realize they were almost on top of her until it was almost too late.

Luckily a large group a stampeding, bellowing Rhyhorn right behind her were loud enough to break Mina’s concentration or she would have been tromped into the dust right there. Instead she took a few heartbeats to realize she was about to be flattened and figure out which way to run before starting to stampede herself.

She barely made it past the edge of the group before they rumbled past. Fortunately, they didn’t seem interested in turning around and trying again, so she was just left sneezing on the prodigious quantities of dust they’d kicked up. Her side was hurting again and Mina grumbled to herself. Irritated, she stumbled after the Rock/Ground types; they were still going in the same direction she wanted to go in.

((About an hour later…))

The Pokédex said she was only about two miles away from Trainer Hill when she got the message from Mark. She frowned at it.

I’m six miles out of town! She checked the map in dismay; it was a lot farther back to town than it was to her destination. She didn’t want to leave Mark waiting for her indefinitely, but she didn’t really have a choice

Wait, Natu! Mina called him out. “Natu, could you Teleport us back to Ceris from here? And Teleport us back to this spot afterwards?”

Natu looked quizzical for a moment, then bobbed up and down in a full-body nod.

“Cool!” Mina scooped him up and set him on her shoulder, then texted Mark back.

Mark:

You try and think back on everything you’ve heard about nicknaming Pokémon. You seem to recall something about having to stand in a barrel of Tentacool slime under the full moon and then carrying the ball of the Pokémon to be re-nicknamed to the old man who lived on the brim of an active volcano while chanting in a somber voice, but the volcano will erupt if he doesn’t like the name…or maybe that was just a movie.

Checking the Pokédex, you notice that there’s a ‘Change’ option next to the Pokémon’s name. Maybe that would be helpful?

----------------

Mark and Mina:

((Approximately one hour after Mina’s text…))

After making her way the rest of the way to Trainer Hill and making sure Natu could Teleport them back to it once she had time, Mina had him warp them back to the Ceris Pokémon Center. (She had a moment of confusion when the first Teleport ended with them out in the wilderness, but as the second got them where they wanted to go Mina didn’t worry about it.)

It being late afternoon getting into early evening, the Center was active without being crowded (though she did startle a random trainer by appearing right in front of him).

“Mark?” she called. “I’m here, what did you need?”

((The hour before))

With that option discovered, Mark walked outside and let out all of his pokemon except Chevalin, who he was going to have to talk to in a different place, hopefully a safer place, and he gestures for his team to gather round while he explains what's going on to them. "Alright team, I know we've been working pretty hard the last few days, so I'm thinking we're going to take a bit of a break. With that said, Swellow was hit pretty hard last mission, so I'm giving him a break and we're going to see how Sengar here can get along with everyone. I'm also giving Corphish a break to introduce you guys to Jessia! Say hello everyone!" He says, gesturing at the little snorunt.

After each pokemon made their greetings, Mark tells them all, "N-Now, there's one other member of our team, but for now we'll let her stay in her ball. She's been... well, she's had a h-hard life, and I want her to be in a safe space when I finally introduce her to the team. We'll go visit Ranger Wane l-later to see if he can help with that... but we still have something else to do! It's naming day! N-Now, let's see here..."

Lapras was the easiest one. A bard's name, and a name that fit his typing as well! "Lapras, your name is going to be Fisher from now on."

Looking at Skarmory next, he says, "Skarmory, your name is going to be be Tarr." The name of a solid, reliable man in the books, fitting for the sturdy steel type and his enduring personality.

Finally, he looked at Kirlia and told her, "And you, my sassy, grumpy and too-smart-for-my-own-good psychic type, are going to be called Tattersail." A far-seeing mage, kind to her friends, past all of the sarcasm.

Stretching a bit, he pops his solar pannels back open to charge his arm a bit with the mid-afternoon sun, and tells all of his pokemon, "And t-that... is mostly a wrap. Go ahead and relax, guys, we're going to w-wait for Mina to show up so that we can see about cracking that safe."

_______________________________________________

((At the safe))

Mark would have recalled all of his pokemon except Sengar and Tattersail and walked inside five minutes prior, pulling out his journal as he waited and finally getting a doodle of Jessia started, and then... pop! There was Mina, causing a bit of a disturbance in the middle of everything. Standing up, Mark waves to her with his patented doofy grin on his face (even if it wasn't as big as usual) and say, "H-Hey! Mina! Over here sunshine!" And, once he'd gotten her attention, he showed her into the back room that they had stored the safe in.

"S-Soooooooooo... we got this last night from the Bandra camp, b-because Tattersail is like, r-really good at teleporting things and stuff. Oh. Uh... g-gave my team new nicknames because I-I figured they earned them, by the way. A-Also Sengar o-over here tried to mug me o-or something so I was able to catch an Umbreon! H-How cool is that?" Clearing his throat and re-focusing on the reason that he'd brought Mina back here in the first place, Mark told her, "A-Anyway, I was wondering if y-you had any ideas on how to get this thing o-opened...?"

There are no Eevee in Helnith. There are no Eevee in Helnith. Which means…that was…

Mina didn’t know why she was mentally stuttering so much; she’d seen Misty’s Umbreon before, and he hadn’t changed that much.

"S-sorry Mina, I don't know what... a-are you okay?"

“I’m…” She mentally took stock; her chest hurt, but she didn’t think anything was broken. There might be bruises where she landed. Mostly she was just shook up and really pale. “I’m fine. I think I’m fine.” Why did all of Mark’s Pokémon have to hate her? ((Because you’re a DMPC Mina! ))

Mina struggled mightily to get her mental feet back under her, and valiantly tried to put the conversation back on its initial track as she did so. “You wanted something…wanted to show me something? When you texted me earlier?”
