Matt:

You follow the Shinx to a rocky outcrop. The grass here is beaten down and flattened roughly in a ring around the outcrop. The Shinx leads you around to an indent in the stone, where a battered backpack is lying unattended. The zipper gaps open to reveal the smooth curve of eggshell. The Shinx tries to gently headbutt you towards it, making encouraging noises.

----------------

Mark and Mina (dinner):

Mina felt mortified and cast about for a subject change. “So how are we planning to get your Aron back?” Mina managed to clamp her mouth shut before she added since the guy who stole it is apparently dead but worried she might have made things worse anyway. This was not going well!

----------------

Mark (pre-Wain):

The nurse looks taken aback until you explain, but even then she has to answer back in the negative: the Pokémon Center would only be able to get a cybernetic limb for Chevalin if she’d actually lost one of her natural limbs. She does suggest the college in Skybreak as they do research on Pokémon and might be able to help with something experimental. She also mentions that some more specialized trainer equipment – the Scope Lens, the Zoom Lens – are sometimes available at the Battle Frontier outlets ((read: not the Contest Hall )), and that you might be able to find something suitable there.

----------------

Mark (post-Wain):

Chevalin watches cautiously, but allows you to approach and apply the Cologne, and after a little bit seems to enjoy the feeling of being rubbed.

((-1 Vivid Scent, Chevalin’s Shadow Gauge has been decreased to 47%. ))

----------------

Mark (Contest Hall):

No one knows where Mina is, but a few people saw Pellana being taken back to the Pokémon Center. One individual adds that she’d been walking on her own but there had been some concern about smoke in the lungs.

"Ah, hey ok ok, I'm going!" I say chuckling as the Shinx nudges me. I go through the backpack looking for any sort of identification being careful of the egg inside. I wondered what else the backpack might be holding, or whom it belongs to, perhaps the more important question of why they'd leave it out here in the middle of no where like this. Or perhaps what might have scared them away to leave it. The very thought sent a chill down my spine, I sure hope nothing unpleasant randomly showed up hungry for egg...or me!

Matt:

The pack is dirty enough and battered enough it has probably been sitting outside for a while. A few empty wrappers suggest there might have been food in it at one point, but it’s long gone now. You do find a Pokédex, or more accurately the remains of one – something or someone smashed it thoroughly, and all attempts to turn it on or get it functioning result in at most, a few sparks. Aside from that and the egg, you find three Pokéballs still in usable condition, a Potion, and a set of Safety Goggles in a side pocket. Then the bag shifts from your examination of its contents and you realize there’s something heavy at the bottom.

This last find proves to be…bizarre. It’s a book; very old, but very well preserved, and seemingly unharmed by whatever tore up the backpack. Strange symbols are cut into the cover, each different from the next but all consisting of a single unbroken line. Last but not least, three sets of leather straps bind the book shut; each set comes together at an unmarked clay medallion on the front, and no amount of tugging or sliding manages to loosen them, they just slide back into place once you let go.

((Loot:
+1 Pokémon Egg
+3 Pokéballs
+1 Potion
+1 Safety Goggles (Held Item – protects against weather moves and powder-based attacks)
+1 Strange Bound Book))

Well. Mina killed him. Because when she asks that, Mark immediately begins choking on his nugget and has to spend a few seconds coughing that up before he can even so much as think of a response. After having some time to recover (because of course he didn't actually die), he manages to croak out, "Well... we could always try going back, catching more grunts and beating it out of them. Or maybe I could see about i-interrogating one of the grunts we already caught. But... I mean, without knowing where Zelg's... well... there's no real way to know unless I g-got lucky." And yep, he looks even more miserable now. Great job, Mina, you almost killed him and gave him depression at the same time. Smashing work there.

_______________________________________

((Pre-Wain))

Mark makes sure to note down the location of the nearest Battle Frontier outlet not under Bandra control, and thanks the nurse before strolling on outside to meet up with the ranger.

_______________________________________

((With Wain))

While he applies the unguent, Mark's humming stops and he tells the pokemon, "Oh, uh, I talked to the nurse about the thing and... well, ethically and legally we can't get you your own robot limb without you, you know, missing one yourself." Painfully aware that the ranger was in there with them and hearing this completely out-of-context topic, likely for the first time, he clears his throat and continues, "She recommended looking into the college in Skybreak instead, if you're up for being s-studied a little bit in exchange, they might be willing to see if they can rig up some cool gadgets and gizmos for you to use. Or we could look into one of the Battle Frontier outlets. Though either way... it's a bit of a walk from where we are now."

Finishing applying the cologne, Mark looks over at Wain and asks, "Um... so are you up for maybe a mock battle too, just to help lower the shadowing a bit more today, or...?"

___________________________________

((The Contest Hall))

Well, Mina didn't murder the gym leader, so that was good. But that also meant that Mark still had no idea where she was. After making sure it was safe to go inside, he would thank the ladies he'd been talking to and try to slip in without causing too much of a fuss or drawing too much attention to himself. Maybe she was giving a statement to the Officer Jenny or Wain about the incident? He just knows that he'd just come from the pokemon center, so if Mina had been there, he'd have known it. So the only other logical place would be inside of the contest hall, or outside of it in the local area, and since she hadn't been in the crowd... Well, he'd look for the blending machines first to see if she was still around there, but otherwise, he was likely going to get lost inside of the contest hall again.

Well, I guess as I can't open the book, I'll just.... take it with me and hope someone else can figure out how to open the darn thing.

Next, I'll be wondering if these pokeballs are vacant or not. Wouldn't want to be finding like... deceased pokemon in pokeballs from lack of feeding or something frivilous like that.

Now... the egg... I imagine... I'll do my best to keep it insulated and warm in the other pack... and carry it around. Imagining that my own pack to be quite full and wouldn't want to go accidentally breaking it or anything.

Last but not least, I shall thank the Shinx, ask if it'd like to accompany me or not, and if so, shall offer it one of my knowingly empty balls for which it might reside. If not, I'll happily bid it adue with many well wishes, thoughts of it's future safety, and hopes that it doesn't get captured by ne'er do wells like Bandra goonies.

Mark and Mina (dinner):

Mina just looked downcast and gave his shoulder a squeeze. “We’ll think of something,” she promised.

----------------

Mark (pre-Wain):

((Trainer Hill would be closest – yes, I keep bringing that up, you guys are surrounded by Bandra on almost all sides, there isn’t much else you can safely get to. ))

----------------

Mark (post-Wain):

"She recommended looking into the college in Skybreak instead, if you're up for being s-studied a little bit in exchange, they might be willing to see if they can rig up some cool gadgets and gizmos for you to use. Or we could look into one of the Battle Frontier outlets. Though either way... it's a bit of a walk from where we are now."

Chevalin doesn’t seem to be overly concerned, as she doesn’t react to this.

"Um... so are you up for maybe a mock battle too, just to help lower the shadowing a bit more today, or...?"

“We can do that,” the Ranger agrees. The little Growlithe that has been following him around barks enthusiastically and wags its tail in response. “Whenever you two are ready.”

----------------

Mark (Contest Hall):
Mina isn’t inside, at least as far as you can see; it’s mostly empty except for a few people trying to clean up what looks like a small volcano of burned pasty and Berry residue in a spot that you remember had been a Blender the last time you’d seen it. The stench and smoke, however, are still quite heavy in the air; the cleanup crew are getting around this with masks, but you don’t have one of those and you’re starting to feel light-headed.

----------------

Matt:

The book goes in your pack without fanfare. The Pokéballs are empty; additionally you vaguely recall there being some sort of safety mechanism in place to prevent captured Pokémon from starving to death if their ball isn’t opened in a long time, so that was never going to have been a problem.

You manage the second pack with some difficulty; the egg is secure, at least, although carrying it like this is awkward.

The little Shinx, her task apparently accomplished, doesn’t seem interested in joining you. Instead she chirps something into the tall grass surrounding the beaten down patch and trots off – along with seven or eight other Pokémon you hadn’t even noticed before they started moving, who had been hiding around the edges – other Shinx, a few Luxio ((Shinx’s evolved form)).

Mark wanted to respond, really, but the normally optimistic trainer had been beaten down so much recently that all he could do was give her a little nod and try not to break down and cry right there. A fact that would be abundantly clear to Mina, as his shoulder trembled under her hand and, once in a while, she could hear his breath hitching in his throat. But at this point he was able to keep it together successfully, his will somehow keeping from being broken down entirely despite his youth and everything that had happened to him.

That said, he was done eating for a bit, and his prosthetic would lift to cover his eyes instead of picking up another fry or nugget.

_______________________________________________

((With Wain, since pre-Wain seems mostly wrapped up))

Mark didn't seem to notice the lack of interest from his pokemon, and he would step back and away from the traumatized ice-dragon, partially turned towards Wain, even if he never fully turns his back on her. "Alright, I'm thinking t-three, maybe four exchanges s-should be good. Kirlia, use double team three times and get ready to hop in if you're needed."

Looking at Chevlain, he says, "Alright, this is just a mock battle, okay? Just a little thing to get the blood flowing and to help you out a bit more. So if it starts getting a bit overwhelming, let Kirlia know." Hoping that his pokemon would understand and follow his direction, he commands, "Now, Chevlain, use Mirror Coat." Something non-damaging shouldn't be too dangerous, right?

_______________________________________________

((Concert hall))

Not finding Mina, and certain that she would have left this noxious place and been in the crowd if she'd decided to stick around, Mark made a hasty retreat and took in a few breaths of fresh air to clear his head. Thinking about it for a second, he mumbles to himself, "... Maybe she was brought to the pokemon center for... smoke inhalation or something...?" And with that, he makes his way off towards the center once more to see if he could find her, coughing up some more smoke and other gunk along the way.

Forgot to note Shadowing

Matt:

The Pokédex informs you that the egg is healthy and will hatch soon – the Pokédex’s estimate putting ‘soon’ at ‘in a day or two.’

Your trip back to town is uneventful, barring a sighting of the Murkrow you’d battled before, who caw a greeting and then go back to bird business.

The same cannot be said of the town however; the Contest Hall appears to have caught fire in your absence, as there is a bit of a crowd and a great deal of smoke around the building.

----------------

Mark and Mina (dinner):

Mina gave him a sort of awkward half-hug, a gesture made more difficult by the fact that they were both sitting at a table and Mina wasn’t good in these sorts of situations at the best of times.

----------------

Mark (with Wain):

The Ranger takes out his Styler and sends the little top to spin around Chevalin, but the Pokémon shies away. “I’m trying to help you, Chevalin!” Ranger Wain tells her, partly amused, part frustrated.

Chevalin throws you a look that says ‘you sure you know what you’re doing?’

Growlithe uses Leer!
Chevalin’s Defense falls!

Chevalin uses Mirror Coat!

The Ice type’s body sweats out a silvery coating. As no one has gone and attacked her, however, nothing else happens.

Chevalin’s Shadow Gauge falls 2%!

Growlithe: 70/70

Chevalin: 104/104 (Defense down 1 level)(Shadowed: 45%)
Kirlia: 73/73 (Evasion up 3 levels)

----------------

Mark (Contest Hall):

After checking with the nurse at the Pokémon Center, you are informed that Mina was, in fact, brought in for smoke inhalation. The nurse tells you it’s too soon to know if it’s serious or not, but they should have a better idea in the morning.

Holy cow! Smoke's rising up over the town! Better hurry back to town and call out Poliwhirl in case it's still burning! I wondered why the Murkrow weren't more panicked about the situation, perhaps it's just smoldering and the fire was already out? But what caused it? A Bandra attack for what we did? But I suppose if that was the case, they'd have simply razed the city to the ground. Hmmm... regardless, quicker pace!

Mark leaned up against Mina for a bit as she offered her support, but stayed quiet during that time. After a while, he mumbles, "Um... I think our food is getting cold. We should..." And away he pulled from that awkward half-hug. "We should probably, you know, eat or something." Clearing his throat, he picks up another nugget and munches on it, looking only slightly miserable at this point.

_________________________________

((With Wain))

He sighs at that look, and tells Chevlain, "For now we're just trying to just have a short, painless mock-battle. I don't want anyone injured because they were hit with a flamethrower or bitten too hard..." Hesitating a bit, he shoots Wain a look and adds, "But if you don't want to just stand there, I suppose, then use Powdered Snow." He doesn't want Chevlain to grow tired and bored of the battle and lash out with a powerful move of her own, or grow frustrated that she isn't allowed to strike back, so in Mark's mind this seems like a good compromise.

"Tattersail, use Lucky Chant too." And that was just insurance to make sure no one gets knocked out.

((Post-everything))

With the whole Mina situation squared away, and having nothing else to do at the moment, Mark would find an open table, get out his kit to repair and maintain his prosthetic, and go about disassembling the mechanical bits and cleaning the arm out. The joints were getting all gritty, and he didn't want them wearing out because he left sand to be all rough, coarse and everywhere inside of it.

You reach the Contest Hall; the smell of burned fruit is heavy in the air. Asking around, it seems there was some sort of accident or screw up involving one of the Berry Blenders; a visiting Gym leader and a few others were taken to the Pokémon Center for smoke inhalation and related issues, and cleanup of the Contest Hall is currently under way.

----------------

Mark and Mina (dinner):

Mina awkwardly scooted back to her own plate and returned to picking at it. Not long after the waitress stopped by with the bill.

((Anything else you want to do here or should we wrap this up too?))

----------------

Mark (with Wain):

Chevalin still avoids the Ranger’s Styler, his Growlithe partner just dances around uncertainly. ((I should probably be counting Styler usage as an item use. ))

Chevalin uses Powder Snow!
Growlithe is hit for 14 damage!
It’s not very effective…

Kirlia uses Lucky Chant!

Chevalin’s Shadow Gauge falls 2%!

((Luck Chant in effect: 4 rounds remaining))

Growlithe: 56/70

Chevalin: 104/104 (Defense down 1 level)(Shadowed: 43%)
Kirlia: 73/73 (Evasion up 3 levels)

----------------

Mark (after everything):

Most of the grime you find is ordinary dirt or Pokémon-related – feather fluff from Swellow, that sort of thing. You do find a dead beetle rattling around under one of the solar panels.

See I knew Berry blending was a horrid idea... I shall attempt to help with cleanup of the Contest Hall with assistance from my pokemon. Probably, and primarily, Weepinbell and Poliwhirl. Weepinbell can utilize Vine Whip to lift heavy beams if needed and Poliwhirl can assist with either lifting, removing, or in case any stray hot embers exist yet. Matter of fact, I'll have Ratman out as well, his nose should be able to help with that I'd imagine. Though, I guess if the rest wanted to assist with cleanup, I'd permit them to come out. No tom foolery though, after making sure everything is fine at the Hall, I'll be looking for Mark and Mina to see if they happened to be part of the smoke inhalation group that were taken for treatment at the center.

Noticing Chevlain dodging the Ranger's tool constantly, Mark tells her, "Chevlain, you don't have to worry about the little whirring, annoying thing. It's irritating but harmless. Focus on the mock-fight instead, and use powdered snow again!"

Mentally, he tells Tattersail, <Good job so far. Try to keep tabs on Chevlain's mental state, if it seems like she's going to lose control, warn me so I can recall her.> Hopefully his psychic empath was able to track Chevlain's mood and mental state well enough to act as a warning system if she wasn't busy using moves and actively fighting.

Upon entering, you discover most of the mess is centered around a particular Blender; the rest is just heavy clouds of smoke. You are able to help out with opening windows and carrying over cleaning supplies to help restore the Blender however.

You spot Mark leaving the scene, but due to the crowds, aren’t able to catch up to him immediately. When you do reach him, he’s at the Pokémon Center cleaning his prosthetic arm.

----------------

Christian:

You make your way to the bar and quickly lose track of time; a number of interesting fights take place, which interrupt most of your attempts at information gathering. You do manage to learn that the Starlight Squad is currently split in two; Sesh is up by Skybreak City as far as anyone is aware, and Lijan is here in Ceris. Apparently the two of them are at odds with one another.

Upon leaving your nose is assaulted by a waft of smoke that smells like burning pie; a crowd is dispersing from the Contest Hall, where it seems to have originated. You see the middle-aged man from earlier headed to the Pokémon Center along with a few others – at a guess volunteers of some kind, as most of them are sweaty and covered in sooty grime.

Tattersail’s response isn’t even in words, just a sense of understanding and agreement.

Mina (morning before the Contest Hall Blender disaster):

Mina awoke about the same time as Mark, around 8 AM. She took a moment to wash up and water her Berries ((Sitrus is growing taller)) before swinging by the kitchen for some breakfast. She filled Mark in on her plans for the day before having Natu Teleport her back to Trainer Hill.

They wound up chaining Teleports again, startling some poor wild Taillow rather badly, but before she could do more than register the sound of wingbeats they were back in front of the spectacularly new and shiny building she’d only glimpsed the day before.

The exterior was at once emptier and more cluttered than the day before: people had apparently been camping around the building (Mina wondered why; wasn’t Skybreak City nearby?) and were now putting away their tents and sleeping rolls, but on the flip side there weren’t as many of them. She vaguely recognized the stall set up outside as belonging to the cologne seller from Ternai Town, and was actually pushing her way through the front door of Trainer Hill before she remembered why that was important.

The Ranger! Shadowing!

She backtracked hastily to browse the stall. There was a massive selection.

((600 PD - Joy Scent: A slightly pleasing scent.
800 PD - Excite Scent: A moderately pleasing scent.
1200 PD - Vivid Scent: A greatly pleasing scent.
900 PD - Relax Scent: A plain, clear-colored scent that reminds you of nothing at all.
900 PD - Clear Scent: A liquid scent that makes things come into sharper focus.
900 PD - Sticky Scent: Bright green, it has a consistency like honey.
900 PD - Damp Scent: A watery-looking scent that makes you think of fog.
900 PD - Warm Scent: A scent that makes you feel warm from the inside out. It smells of woodsmoke and cinnamon.
900 PD - Bright Scent: This scent makes you feel energized and enthusiastic. The ripples on its surface look like tiny sparks.
900 PD - Sneak Scent: A dark-colored scent, not entirely unpleasant, that nonetheless makes you feel chilled.
900 PD - Deep Scent: This scent is bronzy-brown, thick, and flows sluggishly.
900 PD - Down Scent: A cloudy scent that reminds you of cool breezes.))

Mina spent a good half-an-hour interrogating the man running the stall over specifics and sniffing at the various scents before finally walking away with a few purchases. ((+1 each Down Scent, Warm Scent, Clear Scent and Vivid Scent, -3900 PD, 5550 PD remaining.))

She almost immediately felt silly for spending so much on what amounted to Pokémon perfume, but reminded herself the Ranger had said it was useful for Shadowing. That was likely to be a problem sooner or later, so she was just preparing.

She still had a little trouble telling herself these little bottles were going to be more useful than Potions or Pokéballs, so she gave up and went back inside Trainer Hill.

"As far as I could tell Christian, it appeared to have started on fire somehow. I was coming back to town from a stroll out in the wilderness when I saw smoke and hurried back. I though Mark here would be able to fill me in on what happened. It's good to see you're both okay. How's Mina? Was she caught in the fire too or no ? And it's JUST Matt, thank you." After a pause I think of what I found earlier. Pulling out the book I present it to the two. "I found this tattered old backpack out in the wilderness with this strange book inside. I haven't opened or examined it, feel as though that'd be a violation of property you know? But I digress, does it look familiar to either of you?"
