Mark stopped at seeing the pile of pokemon, before looking away while closing his eyes. In response to Mina's question, he grumbles, "We do what we've been doing. We take these sons of Giratina down one by one until..." He trails off as something clicks in his head, and he looks at the area where the trainers had been gathered, his gaze blank, and his mind acting purely on instinct as he realized...

As the stench of rotting flesh grew more and more, I covered my nose and mouth with the sleeve on my arm, using my elbow to somewhat assist in holding my breath. As the group suddenly came to a shocked halt at the body of corpses, I kept walking forward and said, "Keep going, we've got work to do and no time to hesitate and to be sad over what's been occurring here at present. We can be solemn and mopey when we get back to town after cleaning this...mess...up. These scum show no mercy, I see no reason to show any to them after seeing this atrocity."

The group manages to approach as close as it can without being spotted. Unfortunately there are still two sentries at the front entrance (the third having gone back inside after dumping the Wiliter corpse) and a good bit of open space between you and them. More than enough to be seen before anyone could get inside.

Mark was silent when he finally looked away from the bodies, the color gone from his face and his still-human hand trembling. Nodding to Matt, he locks his eyes on the guards still outside of the ruins and commands, "Tattersail, get close enough to use confusion on the nearest guard. Sengar. Quick attack the other." And, after giving them a moment to pull those moves off, Mark sends out Jessia and Corphish as well. This was a full-on assault at this point, and he wasn't going to be gentle or nice Mark anymore.

They were taking the Shrine of Light, and if the grunts were left reeling and off-center, left to run through their facility to try and respond, then so much the better. Not a single one of them would be left standing if Mark had anything to say about it.

And maybe, just maybe, if he took them all down, he wouldn't see Zelgius' body in his mind's eye anymore...

Added Weepinbell's HP

Unfortunately, there’s not enough in the way of cover between the group and the Grunts to get the jump on the sentries this time. Add to that the sentries’ backs are to the Shrine and there is no direction for them to look except in the group’s direction, and they have sufficient time to call out their Pokémon to deflect the hits and retaliate.

And one Grunt is immediately on his radio: “All units, hostiles at the west entrance, repeat, hostiles at the west entrance to the Shrine!”

“Harris, that’s a Teleporter!” His buddy informs him, pointing at Tattersail.

“I know, I remember the boss’ lecture!”

Definitely more competent Grunts this time.

"Ratman, quick attack that radio out of that goons hands, Taillow use Wing attack on that Ariados! Wythir, Flaaffy, Poliwhirl, we're going to need assistance pronto!" (Weepinbell would attack the Gravelers with Vine Whip as I don't recall returning him to his ball after tieing up the last group of grunts. If the DM permits of course! And I'll naturally assume that summoning them will delay their combat a turn.)

Hopefully any reinforcements they called will take a while to get here. Or be oblivious to the torrent of pain that's about to be afflicted upon them.

((Note, I'm choosing targets based on how I understand the foluma in the pinned thread, which means Corphish has [2+(45-20)/10] or 4.5 (rounded down to 4) targets, and Jessia has [2+(59-20)/10] or 5.9... (rounded down to 5) which is JUST UNDER HITTING ALL OF THEM ARGH))

Mark takes the reaction in stride, sending a command to Kirlia to tell her, <Seems like they will be going after you a lot. Double team, and stay behind the rest of the team for now.> Out loud, he commands, "Corphish, use bubble on the gravelers, sandslash and ariados. Sengar, use pursuit on the ariados. Jessia, hit both machokes, both gravelers and the Sandslash with Icy Wind."

After giving his commands, he then sends out Skarmory as well, after tucking away his pokeballs for Corphish and Jessia. Fisher he holds back for now, knowing that the water type will have to be recalled each time, and also knowing that these guards were about to be hit with a small army's worth of attacks, so it could easily be very well over by the time the water type got to move.

Grammar fixes

((@gnomes: Yup, basically it’s designed to give you the same number of targets as the tens column, the extra calculation just makes it so you will always have at least two. ))

As there was already a small flood of Pokémon on the field, Mina just kept out her Houndoom and ordered him to Rock Smash one of the Graveler. She’d send the rest out if and as they became needed.

Ratman uses Quick Attack!

Matt’s Rattata managed to zag past the opposing Pokémon – barely – and sent the radio flying. Of course, there was already radio chatter from the other end as various Bandra respond that they were on their way…

Houndoom uses Rock Smash!
It’s super effective!
Graveler A is hit for 25 damage!

Jessia uses Icy Wind!
Graveler A is hit for 52 damage!
It’s super effective!
Graveler A uses held Chahal Berry to restore 20 HP!
Graveler A’s Speed falls!
Graveler B is hit for 57 damage!
Graveler B uses held Chahal Berry to restore 20 HP!
It’s super effective!
Graveler B’s Speed falls!
Machoke A is hit for 22 damage!
Machoke A’s Speed falls!
Attack missed!
Sandslash is hit for 50 damage!
It’s super effective!
Sandslash’s Speed falls!

Skarmory and Poliwhirl kept glancing back at their trainers, confused, having been called out without instructions.

What are you doing?!” Pellana yelled. “Why are you just sending your Pokémon out and having them be sitting ducks? Tell them to do something!” ((We’ve been over this before re: sending out Pokémon vs. switching, but since you lot apparently weren’t paying attention I’m perfectly happy to have the Grunts take the free attack. ))

Hitmonchan uses Fire Punch!
It’s super effective!
Ariados is hit for 78 damage! ((Super-effective hit + Iron Fist = we don’t need no stinkin’ STAB! ))
Ariados was Burned!

Taillow uses Wing Attack!
It’s super effective!
Ariados is hit for 39 damage!
Ariados faints!

Taillow looked down her beak at Pellana’s Hitmonchan as if to say, ‘See? That’s how it’s done.’ Sengar just looks put out that he has nothing to hit now.

Tattersail uses Double Team!
Tattersail’s Evasion rises!

Wythir shied away from Mina’s Houndoom but was otherwise as lost by the flood of Pokémon as Poliwhirl.

Growlithe uses Energy Ball! ((!!!))

“What was that?” Pellana demanded in surprise. “How does your Pokémon know that?”

“I don’t know,” the Ranger replied, “She came to me with it!”

It’s super effective!
Graveler B is hit for 133 damage!
Graveler B faints!

Machoke B uses Submission!
Poliwhirl is hit for 63 damage!
Machoke B takes 15 damage from recoil!

Weepinbell uses Vine Whip!
Critical hit! (())
It’s super effective!
Graveler A is hit for 70 damage!
Graveler A faints!

Corphish uses Bubble!

Most of Corphish’s targets were out cold, but she went charging after the Bandra Sandslash with a determined gleam in her beady eyes.

It’s super effective!
Sandslash is hit for 20 damage!
Sandslash uses held Chahal Berry to restore 20 HP! ((…))

Wild Bronzor uses Extrasensory!
It’s super effective!
Machoke B uses help Payapa Berry to decrease the damage!
Machoke B is hit for 31 damage!

Sandslash uses Stealth Rock!

A hoard of pointy stones spun out from the Ground type’s spines, littering the ground. Mina facepalmed. Should have sent out more Pokémon after all.

Flaaffy covered her head against the dust and flying rock and gave Matt the stink eye.

Machoke A uses Submission!
Corphish is hit for 57 damage!
Machoke A takes 14 damage from recoil!

Pyrophobe makes Wythir’s speed rise!

((Stealth Rock in effect))

Ratman: 65/65
Taillow: 58/58
Weepinbell: 70/70
Flaaffy: 72/72
Wythir: 64/64 (Speed up 1 level)

Stammering, "Ah, right, orders... Erm, Poliwhirl, would it be possible to wash away the stealth rocks with Rain Dance? If not, that's fine, you'll be helping out regardless. Weepinbell, vine whip the Sandslash, Taillow, Wing attack that second Machoke, Flaaffy and Ratman, hit that first one with some quick attack and thundershock. Wythir, hit any of the foes left awake with buck. Knock 'em all out pronto. We need to keep moving forward."

Narrowing his eyes as he realized that he'd held his pokemon back for no reason, Mark doesn't respond to the gym leader's prodding this time and says, "... Right. Jessia, use Ominous Wind on that Machoke (A)."  While a more limited move, if it could power her up it would be worth it, and it wouldn't miss any of its targets. "Sengar, quick attack the sandslash. Tattersail, keep using double team. Skarmory, use air cutter on all of their pokemon. Corphish, stay back and let me patch you up, bud." And with that, he pulls out one of his super potions and applies it to his crustacean pokemon.

Mark looks forward, starting to walk towards the entrance as he commands his team, "Tattersail, Jessia, use double team, Corphish use Harden, Skarmory use Agility. Let's keep moving, everyone, and get out all of your mobile pokemon once we're past the stealth rocks." And that's all that he said as he gestures for his team to follow him inside of the compound, moving in the direction of that rattata scream.

As I apply a Super Potion to Poliwhirl I instruct Weepinbell to tie these goons up as we move past them with purpose. At the screech of a rattata's death scream I look frantically for Ratman. "Crap, where is he?" I say looking about. "Ratman you better not have gone and gotten into trouble darn it! Taillow, use Focus Energy and Double Team as we move ahead to get ready for our next fight, Poliwhirl, I really, really wish you could wash these stupid rocks away... I don't want to find out what they do.... And they make me nervous.... Wythir, would it be possible for you to use shadow sneak pre-emptively? As in to hide yourself in the shadow of an ally pokemon and when we get into battle, attack an enemy?"

((@gorman Not sure what you’re asking. Shadow Sneak is already increased priority. And if you were hoping for a surprise round, that ship sailed sorry.

Regardless, -1 Super Potion for Matt, 6 remaining. Poliwhirl is now at 61 HP.))

Matt’s Wythir slammed into one of the fleeing Grunts, which in turn allowed Weepinbell to wrap the Grunt up in vines. The other escaped into the Shrine – not that it was likely to matter since Bandra had already been alerted.

When addressed, Ratman tugged on Matt’s leg as if to say ‘I’m right here!’ ((Different Rattata just got murdered. No worries! ))

Once they were past the Stealth Rocks, Mina called out all her Pokémon except for Natu, then after a moment of thought, him too. She had wanted to keep him back in case they needed a quick escape, but he couldn’t Teleport inside the Shrine anyway.

And if she died here, at least he’d have a better chance of getting away then he would in his ball.

She had them use whatever attacks she could think to buff their chances for the upcoming fight.

((Agility for Pidgey, Veneer for Oodramer, Odor Sleuth for Houndoom, Defense Curl for Sandshrew, Miracle Eye for Natu, Cosmic Power for Cosmas.))

Pellana and Ranger Wain called out their remaining Pokémon as well – a Twiggin in Wain’s case, and a Hitmonlee, Shambak, and Tyrogue in Ana’s (Mina didn’t remember the Tyrogue) – and did likewise.

The group pressed deeper into the Shrine. They were only a room or so in when they ran into Bandra – Mina remembered this as a big room, a few side doors leading off of it, with a raised dais and an altar at the far end, murals of Salerdia creating Helnith covering the walls.

Now it stank with blood, as well as hints of fur, feathers, droppings, and other smells associated with terrified Pokémon held in a cramped space for long stretches of time. A sandstorm raged on the group’s end of the room, obscuring the walls and details of their foes; Bandra of course had known they were coming and prepared for them. The doors in the walls were hidden behind cages, many of which were empty but a few still held huddled forms Mina assumed were Pokémon.

There wasn’t time to process more than that, as one of the Bandra called the attack.

Ah crud, a task master. And a whole lot of electric/ steel types, which concerned Mark more than a little bit. He had very, very few ways to deal with them, and more than a few pokemon that were going to be in trouble if they weren't dealt with... but there were plenty of pokemon that he could handle, and he could leave those magnemites to his allies. Sending out his lapras, Mark gives out rapid-fire commands to his pokemon. "Jessia, use Icy Wind on the taskmaster's graveler and the rest you can reach" (gravelers Taskmaster+A through C and graveler E) ""Skarmory, use Air Cutter on both Ariados and one Machoke." The bug types were the biggest threat to his Kirlia, especially if they had ghost-type auto-hit moves. "Tattersail, Lucky Chant and try to protect Corphish if you can. Fisher, use Sing on the magnetons and the machokes. Corphish, use bubblebeam on the taskmaster's graveler. Sengar, use pursuit on one of the wispaferyn."

((Durr, I forgot to calculate that Ice Gem last time Jessia used Icy Wind. *facepalm* The upshot is it’s probably more useful now anyway. But feel free to call me out on those things guys!))

Matt’s scan comes back as inconclusive; there are so many opposing Pokémon, none of whom are holding still for the scan, and visibility is poor. But tentatively, Matt can tell that none of the Bandra Pokémon are obviously pinging as stolen, however a number of the Pokémon in cages are.

Matt’s attempts to get the enemy Pokémon to switch sides, however, fall flat; the most he gets are a few incredulous looks from both Grunts and Grunt Pokémon, and a few nervous glances in the direction of the Taskmaster and his Pokémon.

"Do you suppose if Weepinbell can vine whip those cages over here we might get more assistance?"

“By all means, if you can get the Pokémon out, get them out!” Mina urges.

Meanwhile the Taskmaster (Jaysen??? Mina wondered) was shouting orders: both to his own Pokémon and the Grunts.

Taskmaster’s Graveler uses Protect!

Drat!

Ariados A uses Shadow Sneak!

Appearing to be little more than a darker bolt in the gloomy, sandstorm-filled interior, the enemy Ariados cuts through two of Tattersail’s duplicates before slamming into the Pokémon herself.

Graveler E is hit for 55 damage!
Graveler E’s Speed falls!

Mina checks her Pokédex to see why that last hit had been kind of scanty compared to the other targets. Apparently Graveler E had Poffin boosts, and Mina grumbles to herself that her own attempts hadn’t really gotten anywhere before this mission. They would have been really handy right now!

Oodramer faints!
Tattersail is hit for 66 damage!
Tattersail faints!

The attack also rips through where Poliwhirl and Corphish had been. Skarmory is also within the radius of the attack – but being a Flying type, just soars above it, unconcerned.

Mark has a little more to be concerned about, as a tidal wave of sudden psychic pain nearly overwhelms his senses to the point of passing out – he manages to hold on to consciousness, albeit barely. ((Two lower on that roll and you would be unconscious, my friend! The dice love you today. ))

Graveler F uses Earthquake!

The second attack mostly overlaps with the first, but this time the wild Bronzor and one of the Bandra Sandslash are within the area of effect, and Taillow gets to watch the attack zoom harmlessly underneath. The Bronzor bobs over the wave of force like a cork on water ((Levitate!)), the Sandslash isn’t so lucky, its natural camouflage in the sandstorm doing nothing to protect it.

Sandslash A is hit for 41 damage!
Sandslash A uses its held Chahal Berry to restore 20 HP!

Flaaffy looks around and…and not only is it not raining, but not a single Pokémon has successfully used any Water moves since the fight started! There are no wet enemies! She freezes up in confusion.

Shambak uses Razor Leaf!

Pellana’s Shambak cuts loose against most of the Grunt Ground types ((all but Sandslash B)). Sadly, smoke and sand causes most of the sharp-edged leaves to miss their targets.

It’s super effective!

Magneton B is hit for 96 damage!
Magneton uses held Shuca Berry to absorb the damage! ((Note to self: the Shuca Berries on the Grunt Magneton were largely a waste of time. Half damage and the attack still does more than max HP…))
Sturdy leaves Magneton B conscious with 1 HP!
Hitmonchan is hit for 59 damage!
Hitmonchan uses held Sitrus Berry to restore 30 HP!

Graveler E uses Earthquake!
It’s not very effective…

Magneton B is hit for 205 damage!
Magneton B faints!
Attack missed!

Somehow, one of the Bandra Sandslash and the still-awake Grunt Magneton both manage to be caught between the two Graveler and get pounded as a result. Jessia would have joined them but it turns out that was a duplicate, and instead neatly dodges both attacks by being on the other side of the room. Taillow once again soars over the Earthquake, looking interested but otherwise unaffected, while Twiggin joins her briefly by leaping into the air over it.

An irritable male voice is briefly audible over the storm. “You idiots do realize that Flying types are immune to Earthquake right?

Now Mina is sure that voice is the Taskmaster’s.

Unlike nearly everything else that has been actually hit by the attack so far, Pellana’s Shambak takes the blow like a champ and looks as smug as a grassy ram monster in a sandstorm can look.

A sandstorm is raging.

Ratman loses 4 HP from Sandstorm!
Taillow loses 3 HP from Sandstorm!
Flaaffy loses 4 HP from Sandstorm!
Wythir loses 4 HP from Sandstorm!

Sengar loses 5 HP from Sandstorm!
Jessia loses 5 HP from Sandstorm!
Fisher loses 7 HP from Sandstorm!

Cosmas looked oddly unbothered, and then Mina remembered he had Magic Guard.

Tyrogue loses 2 HP from Sandstorm!

Growlithe loses 4 HP from Sandstorm!

Machoke A loses 6 HP from Sandstorm!
Machoke B loses 6 HP from Sandstorm!
Ariados A loses 8 HP from Sandstorm!

Pyrophobe makes Wythir’s speed rise!

Over the storm, Mina hears the Taskmaster again: “That’s enough playing around, now Earthquake!”

Mark reeled from the psychic blow as his psychic-type went down, but he grits his teeth through the pain, recalling both of his unconscious pokemon and looking through the cages to try and find his Aaron through all the swirling sand and smoke. If he could locate his little buddy in one of the cages broken by either his friends or all of these earthquakes going on, then...

To his team, though, the trainer would let out the following commands as he hears the taskmaster give his orders, "Jessia, use protect and try to intercept that earthquake from Fisher. Fisher, mist." If he could stop all of the accuracy debuffing going on from getting worse, things would go better for them. "Skarmory, use swift on the sandshrews and the more injured ariados. Sengar, use Endure." The taskmaster's Earthquake was going to punish his own team. And once the supporting cast went down, things should go easier for our heroes. They just had to hold out.

Well this wasn't looking good. Memories of mocking Murkrow were filling my head as the situation suddenly felt very similar in being a potentially hopeless situation. Nobody was going to come to the rescue this time.

"Ratman, Taillow listen up! Ratman I want you to ride Taillow's back, Taillow I want you to quick attack as fast as you can past the enemies towards where those cages are, then Ratman, I want you to Bite open as many cages as you can. We're going to need all the help we can get. Hopefully they'll help without having to be asked. I mean...if they don't, they're as dead as we are. Flaaffy if you see any more sand attacks, try using Cotton Spore, maybe they'll counter act each other and the cotton will cause the sand to be useless. Wythir, when you hear an earthquake rumbling, I want you to shadow sneak past it, hopefully avoiding damage, and hit that first Sandslash with it. Poliwhirl, Weepinbell, return! If any of you need a revive to bring your pokemon back, I have one!" I shout the last part to my allies, hoping that they'll hear me and call out for it if needed.

Fixing tenses

“Pidgey, Twister the Taskmaster’s Graveler and the most injured of the Grunt Graveler. Sandshrew, intercept for Natu,” Mina ordered, reasoning that her Ground type was too slow to make a difference with damage and not likely to hit anything anyway. Whereas Natu had Miracle Eye up… “Natu, use Me First on that Graveler. If you can’t do that for some reason” It would be exactly her luck that someone would end up knocking out the Taskmaster’s Graveler before Natu could get a hit in “then pick one of the other ones instead. Try to aim towards the Rock and Electric types. Houndoom…” Mina thought about having him jump on Skarmory’s back like they’d practiced – except they really hadn’t practiced all that much. Also Houndoom was currently one of the only Pokémon on the field who could effectively ignore the smoke thanks to Odor Sleuth (which Mina hadn’t planned on, although given how often they battled Wispaferyn she really should have). “...hit the Taskmaster’s Graveler with Rock Smash. Cosmas, Faint Attack it.”

Tyrogue uses Helping Hand!

Taskmaster’s Graveler flinched!

Mina could hear the Taskmaster raging at his Pokémon even over the storm. “YES! Great job Pidgey!”

Privately, she was a little put out that the giant slow rock monster managed to be faster than her Natu with speed training. That was something she made a note to work on later.

Houndoom uses Rock Smash!
It’s super effective!
Taskmaster’s Graveler is hit for 16 damage!

Following Mina’s instructions, Natu looked for another Graveler using Earthquake to copy.

There had once again been no sand moves for Flaaffy to try to Cotton Spore. The noises she was making sounded suspiciously like swear words and she shook a tiny fist at Matt.

Graveler D is hit for 49 damage!
Graveler D faints!

Ariados B loses 6 HP from Sandstorm!

Pyrophobe makes Wythir’s speed rise!

By this point Taillow and Ratman have managed to make it to the cages, though Ratman nearly slipped halfway there and only manages to hold on by sinking his teeth into Taillow’s wing, to her obvious discomfort and displeasure. ((I really should be rolling for this, since this isn’t something your Pokémon have practiced, but I’m feeling nice. )) Luckily the locks are on the outside, and not made of the same durable stuff as the cages, and Ratman is able to break through them with difficulty. A handful of Pokémon are released; they mill around in confusion or bolt for freedom as their natures dictate. ((Lombre level 22, Sentret level 31, Pachirisu level 29))

Mark is able to spot his Aron through the sandstorm, and the Pokémon has spotted him in turn and is getting excited. He’s not free yet, but he’s the next cage down from where Ratman and Taillow are freeing captives.
