I read the instructions aloud for the rest of the group to hear as I start moving empty cages out of the way, as well as bringing more occupied cages for Marrick to open up.

-2 Revives for Mina, 0 remaining
-1 Super Potion for Mina, 3 remaining
-2 Super Potions for Matt, 4 remaining
-1 regular Potion for Mark, 5 remaining

Jessia, Fisher, Marick, Oodramer, Hitmonlee, Shambak are all conscious and at full HP.))

Revives and Potions are applied and Wain has the freed Pokémon buff themselves along with the trainer Pokémon.

Pellana and Matt have managed to stack a number of empty cages in front of the alter entrance, but it’s clear that isn’t going to be enough to stop Bandra. Sure enough, as soon as Fisher has the mist and rain set up the Grunt Pokémon on the other side smash into the makeshift barrier: two Machoke and a Sandslash are the first ones through.

The cages are durable but not especially heavy and the ones in the middle are flung outwards after a good solid hit, forming a choke point at the entrance where only a few Pokémon on each side can maneuver at a time.

((Mist is in effect, 5 rounds remaining.
Rain Dance in effect, 5 rounds remaining.

Each side can only send out three Pokémon to battle at a time due to the choke point – note that is THREE TOTAL PER SIDE, not three per trainer.))

Well, Jessia was a good choice once again, it seems! With grunt wave 2 starting off with a ground and two fighting types, that's the pokemon that Mark sends forward, telling her, "Jessia, use Icy Wind on all of them. Marik, Fisher, help Wain get more of those cages open."

More softly, to Mina, he says, "Keep your Oodramer back for a second and keep making them harder to hit. If we can get another evasive pokemon in after all the fighting and accurate normal types are down, then..." The benefits should be pretty obvious.

He would let Wain and Pellena decide who they wanted to send out there. He wasn't some kind of military genius, after all, he was just a kid with a throat that was starting to get sore.

Feeling a bit desperate, and not knowing what else to do really, I try to brace the cages in place to bar the entrance as long as possible while frantically looking about the room for god knows what that could possibly help us.

Forgot Speed drop

Mark can see Pellana and Ranger Wain exchange some rapid-fire nonverbal communication, in which they exchange looks, the Ranger checks his Styler while he scans the newly-freed Pokémon, and finally the Ranger shakes his head doubtfully and gives Ana a ‘go ahead’ hand gesture. She sends her Shambak and Hitmonlee out while the Ranger encourages the rescued Pokémon to keep buffing along with Oodramer...none of which works, because Mist is preventing stat adjustments on the side of the friendly Pokémon.

((Remember this?
Quote:
--Mist now prevents positive stat adjustments on the affected side as well as negative.
))

Matt doesn’t see much of note as he looks around the main room – a great deal of sand, the remains of a card game blown into one of the corners by the previous fight, the empty cages of course, and the glassy-eyed corpse of a Rattata lying on the tile-strewn-and-blood-drenched altar next to the knife that had obviously been used to cut its throat…but other than that not much. There are, however, a number of doors leading out of the room aside from the ones the group came in and are currently barricading – two to the north ((we’ll call them door A and door B)) and two to the south ((D and E)), and another in the east wall farther down from the one he’s barricading ((door C)). Presumably they don’t lead out of the complex or there would already be Grunts inside, but they might hold something useful…

Noticing that the mist was preventing his allies from buffing up, Mark winces and says, "Sorry all, I'll see about recalling Fisher once the Wispaferyn are down." Mist went away if the pokemon maintaining it was no longer on the field, if he recalled correctly, so hopefully that would help.

But for now, he didn't have much he could do. He didn't want to give these grunts free reign to nuke his team's accuracy again, especially after how much damage that prevented in the last major clash, and how poorly the last encounter almost went because of it. "Meanwhile, Jessia, use Ominous Wind on that Wispaferyn. Jack, help keep up the most injured pokemon if you can." If Pellana's hardest hitters could be kept up for now, that could help in the long term. "Marik, Fisher, if you can reach any more of those cages, then keep helping the ranger get the pokemon inside out." He had the feeling that the only reason Bandra could control all of the pokemon in here was because of the officer who had been in command of this post and through regular culling. If they could unleash a mob of friendly, angry pokemon, then that would probably be enough to drive Bandra from this area.

((You might want to check that again; Mist covers one side, not just the Pokémon that uses it, and persists for the replacement when a Pokémon is switched in. You’re stuck with it for a while now!))

Ranger Wain and Pellana exchange glances.

“Who’s ‘Jack’?” the Ranger wants to know.

“I think he means you,” Ana replies.

Mina, getting frustrated, decides to help Matt search the rooms for anything useful. She heads for Door A.

Ranger Wain uses a Super Potion on Hitmonlee!
Hitmonlee recovered 50 HP! ((Up to 66))

Wispaferyn A uses Helix Flame!
It’s super effective!
Jessia is hit for 41 damage!

Jessia uses Ominous Wind!
Critical hit!
Wispaferyn A is hit for 50 damage!

Hitmonlee uses Natural Gift!
It’s super effective!
Machoke B is hit for 135 damage!
Machoke B faints!

Sandslash A uses Rollout!
Attack missed!

The Ground type goes rolling harmlessly through one of Jessia’s duplicates.

Shambak uses Headbutt!
Sandslash A is hit for 17 damage!
Sandslash A faints!

Fisher’s Shadow Gauge falls 2%!
Shambak’s Shadow Gauge falls 1%!
((And that’s their Shadow Gauges cleared too! ))

Marick and Fisher manage to free a few more Pokémon during the scuffle ((Caterpie level 10, Happiny level 15, Swinub level 25)).

Matt finds a corridor behind Door C. It goes east for a while, then turns north…where it ends in a pile of rubble. Near the end a bit of the roof is open to the sky, and sunlight streams through it.

Mina, meanwhile, finds a room full of boxes and museum displays – covered in dust and sand for the most part, and some of which were broken when Bandra stuffed them in here, but still recognizable. The Pokédex says some of the things she finds are Pokémon-usable, so she grabs those – reasoning that the pre-Bandra curators, assuming they were still alive, would understand.

Mina found a Time Flute (3 charges)!
Mina found Horrible Beads!
Mina found a Brittle Shield!

Mina eyes the entry on the last item, that would have been phenomenally useful earlier. But they weren’t out of this yet, and she knew just what to do with it... “Mark, you need this!” She runs back to the group and shoves the shield at him.

Well crud, that was three fire types now... and Jessia was really not a good option anymore. Fisher was going to be in for a beating here- oh. Oh wait. Here came Mina with something that could help! "Great, Mina, give that to Fisher. Jessia, pull back, try to open up more of the higher-up cages for Wain. Fisher, time for you to fight the grunts." And with that, Mark swaps his active pokemon around.

((And I realized I forgot about Rain Dance, so Jessia is actually at 73 HP.))

Matt finds that the southern doors both lead to the same room. It’s mostly filled with boxes and bags of cheap Pokéchow, with a section set aside as a break room – portable coffee maker, powdered creamer, human snack-food. He does find an unopened box of pre-made Poffin (x5 each Spicy Poffin (+51 Spicy, +26 Feel), Dry Poffin (+51 Dry, +26 Feel), Sour Poffin (+51 Sour, +26 Feel), Sweet Poffin (+51 Sweet, +26 Feel), Bitter Poffin (+51 Bitter, +26 Feel)).

Mina hands off the Brittle Shield to Fisher, who hastily (or as hastily as a giant Plesiosaurus can manage at least) switches places with Jessia. Ranger Wain runs over and feeds a Chahal Berry to the damaged Ghost type ((…and now she’s at full HP. )) while Jessia sets to phasing through locks and freeing a few more Pokémon ((Makuhita level 23, Surskit level 20)). Pellana calls for a Headbutt on one of the weaker Wispaferyn ((B)) and a Bounce on the strongest ((A)).

Mark recalls Jessia!
Mark sends out Fisher!
Pointed rocks dig into Fisher!
Fisher takes 31 damage!

Wispaferyn A uses Helix Flame!
Fisher is hit for 4 damage!

Wispaferyn B uses Helix Flame!
Fisher is hit for 4 damage!
Fisher is hit for 2 damage!
((…okay maybe you didn’t need the Brittle Shield after all. ))

Wispaferyn C uses Helix Flame!
It’s super effective!
Shambak is hit for 6 damage!

Hitmonlee uses Bounce!
Hitmonlee leaped into the air!

Shambak uses Headbutt!
Wispaferyn B is hit for 28 damage!

Brittle Shield broke!

Mina calls for Oodramer to Bubblebeam Fisher then, noticing no one had really done anything about the KO’d Taskmaster, starts digging through her pack for her duct tape.

Well, they'd known that Fisher was quite the tanky pokemon... but seeing just how little those Wispaferyn managed to get done, even if Fisher hadn't had the shield, was still rather shocking.

However, it was a shock that he got over quickly, focused as he was on the battle in front of him at the moment. "Fisher, use Sing on all of them. Jessia, Marik, if you can reach any more captured pokemon, then free them. Prioritize water types if you can. Otherwise, hang back and wait." To his human companions, he says, "Wain, Pellana, Fisher has Water Absorb. If any of the pokemon you've got or that we've freed have water moves, we can keep him up a bit longer even with the cramped space. Wain how many more pokemon do we got back here?" He asks this question mostly because he's keeping his focus turned to the battle while everyone else runs around. Someone has to, after all.

Matt finds nothing useful behind Door A; it contains old museum displays, gathering dust. Door B is a little more interesting and looks like where Bandra stores some of their extra equipment – he finds three Mining Kits and a few special knives and other cutting implements that he remembers from his Rocket days are used to cut through some of the more exotic Pokémon hides ((Rock/Steel Pokémon, Ghost types, oozy Pokémon like Grimer…)).

”Wain how many more pokemon do we got back here?"

Ranger Wain feeds Fisher a quick Sitrus Berry ((+36 HP, 120 total)) as he replies. “About seven. We aren’t going to have a lot of choice in types.” But he directs the Surskit to cover Fisher alongside Oodramer.

Wispaferyn A uses Silver Wind!
Fisher is hit for 36 damage!

Wispaferyn B uses Silver Wind!
Fisher is hit for 27 damage!

Wispaferyn C uses Silver Wind!
Fisher is hit for 26 damage!

Pellana’s Hitmonlee curls into a ball as he arcs through the air, barely brushing the Shrine’s ceiling before coming crashing down again…but his target sees him coming and floats serenely backwards, leaving him to hit the floor instead.

Hitmonlee uses Bounce!
Attack missed!

The Fighting type recovers gracefully, kicking off from the floor to land in a ready position.

Fisher uses Sing!
Wispaferyn A falls Asleep!
Attack missed!
Attack missed!

The weaker Wispaferyn, meanwhile, are too busy watching Hitmonlee to notice Shambak charging at them.

Shambak uses Headbutt!
Critical hit!
Wispaferyn B is hit for 54 damage!
Wispaferyn B uses its held Chahal Berry to restore 20 HP!

Mina’s Oodramer and the newly-freed Surskit wash down Fisher’s wounds with Bubblebeam and Bubble respectively ((+25% HP each, so +62 HP for a total of 93)). In the background, Jessia and Marick manage to free a Geodude ((level 22)) and a Pupawisp ((level 10)).

Okay, those Silver Winds were a bit more rough. Wincing but seeing that Fisher stayed mostly up, Mark commands, "Alright Fisher, hang in there bud and use Water Pulse on that Wispafaryn (C)." Glancing back at Jessia and Marik, he tells them, "Just keep breaking out the rest of the caged pokemon, guys." Once Mist faded away at the end of the round, this private army of pokemon would be able to buff themselves, too. Which would hopefully help make the lower level pokemon a little bit... more relevant.

Nodding over at the ranger, he says, "Alright Wain, just do what you can. Girls, let's keep this up." Given the rosters of most grunts, these ones seemed likely to be running low on usable pokemon. Raising his voice he shouts over his shoulder, "Hey Matt! You got anything else back there?"

Eureka! A storage room! But from the looks of it, looks more like a butcher shop... Perhaps a more thorough examination might yield more results. As for the mining gear, in the bag you go. Worth a buck if anything.

"Hey Matt! You got anything else back there?"

No response from Matt.

Ranger Wain uses a Sitrus Berry on Fisher!
Fisher regained 30 HP! ((123 HP total))

Wispaferyn A sleeps!

Wispaferyn B uses Will O’ Wisp!
Hitmonlee was Burned!

Wispaferyn C uses Silver Wind!
Fisher is hit for 26 damage!

Hitmonlee uses Natural Gift!
Wispaferyn A is hit for 44 damage!
Wispaferyn A uses its held Chahal Berry to regain 20 HP!

Fisher uses Water Pulse!
It’s super effective!
Wispaferyn C is hit for 90 damage!
Wispaferyn C uses its held Chahal Berry to regain 20 HP!

Shambak uses Headbutt!
Wispaferyn B is hit for 25 damage!

Hitmonlee takes 4 damage from Burn!

The rain and Mist finally fades away, and Marick and Jessia have freed a Zigzagoon ((level 18)), a Zubat ((level 24)), and a Slakoth ((Level 25)). Oodramer and the Surskit wash away Fisher’s wounds again ((up to full HP)).

Meanwhile, in the storage room, Matt continues his survey.

On examination Matt finds the knives are an eclectic mess of tools – definitely not standard kitchenware. There’s one that’s more drill than anything else, another with little bits of black crystal in the blade he remembers hearing some Rocket scientist explain was solid to incorporeal things, and two with battery packs in the hilt and an on/off switch apiece – experimentation on the last reveals that one of these gets very hot when ‘on’, the other very, very cold. And finally there’s a knife like an oversized scalpel with a spray tube on it – Matt recognizes the substance as the medical Pokémon equivalent to powdered gelatin: harmless by itself, it will temporarily cause the anatomy of liquid-bodied Pokémon to solidify, usually for the purpose of surgery (though probably not in this case).

The walls have lots of papers taped up – biological diagrams of various Pokémon (mostly blood vessel maps), lots and lot of lists and charts with types and type combinations listed (and most of the common type combos crossed out or checked off), and what are obviously copies of old manuscripts that look like the biological diagrams but older, simpler, and with lines across various bodyparts (a little hand-written note on one says ‘cut here’ with a little arrow pointing to one of the lines). Someone in Bandra has been speculating over them as there are things written on them like ‘Time of day?’ and ‘Age?’ ‘Possible Pokéball interference – need to try wild’ and so on.

There’s also a camp desk, a lantern, some scattered writing materials and a long-abandoned cup of coffee.

I'll pocket the papers and surgeons tools. Might be worth something. Exiting the room I'll tell to the others, "Not much in here, just dissection equipment and diagrams of pokemon body parts. Probably better left unseen."

Well, the response was a little bit late, but if it was a large enough room and it was as nasty as 'dissection equipment' suggested it would be, then Mark didn't exactly blame Matt for not responding immediately. "Got you, thanks for the update."

To his pokemon, he commands, "Fisher, use Ice Shard on that weakest Wispaferyn. Jessia, keep breaking out those pokemon. Marik, it's hard for you to reach up there bud, so use Iron Defense instead." To everyone else he says, "Mist is down, all, if your pokemon have moves to buff themselves, now is the time to use them."

Ranger Wain is a little too busy trying to coordinate buffs for seventeen or so Pokémon to heal this round. Mina finishes taping up the Taskmaster, and after taking note of what else was going on decides to take the relative lull as a chance to have Oodramer buff as well.

Fisher uses Ice Shard!
It’s not very effective…
Wispaferyn B is hit for 10 damage!
Wispaferyn B faints!

Wispaferyn A woke up!
Wispaferyn A uses Silver Wind!
It’s super effective!
Shambak is hit for 76 damage!

Wispaferyn C uses Silver Wind!
It’s super effective!
Shambak is hit for 60 damage!
Shambak faints!

Hitmonlee uses Natural Gift!
Wispaferyn A is hit for 45 damage!

Hitmonlee takes 4 damage from Burn!

((Buffs for the round:
Marick: +2 Defense (Iron Defense)
Oodramer: +1 Evasion (Veneer)
Poochyena: +1 Attack (Howl)
Vespiquen: +1 Defense, +1 Special Defense (Defend Order)
Serranix: +1 Attack, +1 Accuracy (Hone Claws)
Kricketot: Nothing
Whismur: +1 Attack (Howl)
Caterpie: Nothing
Happiny: +2 Defense (Copycat -> Iron Defense)

Pupawisp: +1 Defense (Harden)
Zigzagoon: (Odor Sleuth)
Zubat: Nothing
Slakoth: +2 Special Defense (Amnesia)

As a side note, don’t expect the Ranger to be able to use all of the ex-caged Pokémon in combat at once.))

Jessia phases through the locks of the last of the occupied cages, freeing a Mime Jr. ((level 17)) and a Spoink ((level 19)).

“That’s the last of them!” Ranger Wain declares.

Bandra forces send out Machoke C!

((Stealth Rock in effect.
