Matt:

"You are absolutely correct. We could have made a fighting retreat so that more of Bandra's goons could get through the door as we made our escape to send out all of their pokemon”

Ranger Wain loses his grip on the Gym Leader and her responses are punctuated with her fists.

“We would have had the advantage in an open fight!” *punch* “My Shambak!” *punch* “Mark’s Froslass!” *punch* “Mark’s Lapras!” *punch* “The Serranix!” *punch* “The Swinub!” *punch* “The Surskit that died!

”I was certainly not distracted trying to keep wild pokemon alive in fighting form and the chaos of the battle to be thinking about anything else. We could have totally escaped and had Bandra chasing us all the way back to town with their leader here staging an assault with his buddies.”

“You wouldn’t have needed—” *punch* “—to keep healing them—” *punch* “—if they hadn’t been getting fed—” *punch* “—RIGHT INTO STEALTH ROCK—” *punch* “—OVER—” *punch* “—AND OVER!

”That sounds WAY better than narrowly defeating them here to give us a few minutes, IF that, to coordinate a retreat as we are now. I can't believe how foolish I was to not mention that hole sooner."

“IF YOU WEREN’T SO STUPID I’D THINK YOU WERE WITH BANDRA!” *punch* “BUT EVEN BANDRA HAS HIGHER STANDARDS THAN YOU!

"Hang on, are any of the conscious pokemon psychic with the Teleport ability? Perhaps we could have them port some cargo out for us? Or leveling...wouldn't that....heal some... wake them up..."

AND—” *punch* “—YOU—“ *punch* “—STILL—“ *punch* “—AREN’T—“ *punch* “—USING—“ *punch* “—YOUR—“ *punch* “—POKÉDEX!!!

Pellana!” Ranger Wain calls, visibly alarmed.

----------------

Mark and Mina:

"... Wait. W-Waaaaait a second... Mina, start stacking the cages so that we can climb, I need to check something."

Mina frowns at Mark in confusion but nods and trots back down the corridor to grab things to make a staircase with.

----------------

Mark and Matt:

Mark’s scans don’t bring up any Shadowing or Shadowed Pokémon that hadn’t been caused by the Taskmaster. ((Check the last stat readout, I’m not repeating myself.)) Also, no Teleporters that are still conscious.

"Wain. How much of that de-shadowing stuff do you have on hand? B-Because if we can de-shadow a few of these... they should be able to level up and wake up on their own, r-right?"

“I have three bottles, but that wouldn’t be enough to de-Shadow any of them, even if we could use them all on the same Pokémon without olfactory fatigue setting in. ((Reminder: can only use Cologne once a day per Pokémon!)) In theory, if we had a few hours to let them rest up, all of them could get back on their feet, Shadowed or not, but we don’t have the time.

I hate to say it but we need to get moving. Bandra will come back after they regroup, if they aren’t already.”

Pellana, meanwhile, appears to have calmed down, at least for the time being. Matt is able to discern that he doesn’t have any broken bones, but there will definitely be bruises.

((You guys have until Monday next week to figure it out.))

The pokedex? I think to myself after the punch fest. With vision blurred, swollen face, and blood welling up in my mouth from perhaps a dislodged tooth, I spit the blood out, wipe my face and ask the pokedex for information about the four pokemon that are still up and exhausted. "What can the dex tell me about moves for these four, behaviors, any sort of detailed information it can give."
They can't...haul for us like the taskmaster right? Too fatigued... too tired... Even if they could fly that wouldn't help any.... would it? I mean if one could fly, it could take some of the lighter pokemon to a safe spot and then come back... Though hell, I wouldn't want to if I were them... Damnit I screwed things up more than usual...

Mark flinches at the ranger's words, before looking back at the pokemon, considering just how heavy that lombre is... and then saying, "Wait. W-We have a water stone. We got one from the safe. We could evolve t-that one." Hastily typing into his pokedex again, he begins checking the levels of the unconscious pokemon to see if any were close to evolving that way too. "I t-think that we have..." Shouting loudly enough for her to hear in the back room, he calls, "H-hey Mina! Didn't we get a water stone from that safe, a-and don't we have a rare candy or two?" He doesn't have any himself, but he could have sworn that the group got one or two from somewhere.

Looking at Wane, his desperation for this needing to work rather clear to see, he says, "If they evolve, they should just barely regain consciousness, right? I-If they can, then... t-that Lombre can walk itself out, a-and we can save one or two m-more by carrying them instead."

Ranger Wain looks surprised. “That could work,” and he takes his pack back and starts digging through it, presumably looking for the required items.

Mina (who has been struggling with moving boxes in the background, favoring her injured arm) calls back, “No it was a Dawn Stone!” ((And a Leaf Stone, and a Thunder Stone. )) She walks back into the main room a moment later and says in a normal voice, “But I do have a Water Stone I found a while back and I think I have a Rare Candy too.” ((She has literally been holding on to these things since 2008!)) She retrieves the items from her pack and crouches down next to the Lombre, touching the Water Stone to it. The Lombre and stone both begin to glow.

“If this Lombre has a trainer they’re going to kill me,” Mina remarks conversationally.

Pellana looks honestly puzzled. “How do you figure?”

“They don’t learn any more attacks if they evolve by Stone.”

Pellana scoffs, “Really, you’re worried about that?!! They’ll be happy to get their Pokémon back alive!”

“You don’t know how bad my luck is.”

“And besides, the tutor at Trainer Hill can teach it any move it could have learned as a Lombre.”

“Good to know!”

The Lombre – now Ludicolo – stops glowing. And promptly gets up! ((Full HP! ))

((-1 Water Stone Mina, 0 remaining. You can have the Rare Candy too, but you have to tell Mina who you want it for. ))

((My suggestion is Bronzor if it's not stopped from evolving for some reason. Which should open up room to rescue the injured fighting type (with some shuffling) and hopefully make the gym leader less 900% mad grumpy. ))

“Wild Pokémon don’t always feel the need to evolve,” Ranger Wain replies. “Evolved forms eat more, to start with, and draw more attention from rivals. But more immediately, it’s Shadowed, and we can’t level it up unless we can un-Shadow it first.”

((If you’re talking about the Makuhita, it weighs more than the Bronzor does, it’s almost 200 lbs. by itself.))

Oh, right. Shadowing prevented level-ups, which prevented level-up dependent evolutions... Crud. That was another blow to Mark's confidence, though the sight of the Ludicolo standing up again would fortify him just enough to keep him thinking. "My Kirlia, Tattersail, is one level away from evolving." Rubbing at his chin, he looks at the temple and says, "But... that's a risk. She can't teleport in here, a-and we d-don't know the range on those things out front, o-or what they even do to interfere with psychic types, really. We could get her up, and s-she could probably teleport three people or pokemon at once, b-but she might only be able to do it from so far away that we end up leaving a pokemon we could have saved behind."

Shaking his head, he points at the geodude and says, "We should try evolving t-that one into a graveler. Hopefully the transformation will fortify them, and they will be able to help us move cages and transport unconscious pokemon out of the h-hole. Maybe they'll be able to man the travois or cary the Makuhita, even, w-who knows? But I f-feel that is our safest bet, and it saves a pokemon that we weren't g-going to be able to get out otherwise."

Looking at the gym leader, Mark reminds her, "You know... that blue pillar that w-was in front of the camp? Tattersail sensed m-more of them. W-We don’t know w-where, or if they only had them in the camp. We don't know w-what they do, so it's a guess, but... we d-did take a sizable number of grunts from this area using teleportation. S-so it would make sense for them to bring some tech to ward that, to secure the area against teleporting people a-and pokemon." With a shrug, he adds, "W-wouldn't make much sense to keep the camp outside of the temple if you couldn't protect it from enemies that just... you know... teleport right into the middle of it, take down half of your grunts before they can react, leave in order to heal, and then come back to rinse and repeat."

Looking down, his robotic hand holding his organic arm, the kid mumbles, "I... I don't want to risk leaving a-anyone behind. N-Not on a gamble... o-or a stupid b-bet... o-or because we didn’t see s-something obvious... I've asked t-too much out of all of you a-a-already..." And then he closes his eyes and flinches, waiting for the inevitable scream that he doesn't know what he's talking about.

Looking at the Geodude, he asks Pellena, and by proxy the rest of the group, "S-should we evolve t-that one, or s-should we evolve Tattersail?" Knowing that evolving his own pokemon meant that the Makuhita and Geodude were certainly going to die, he doesn't want to be the one responsible for making that choice.

He closes his eyes at that and softly says, "A-Alright." With Mina basically agreeing that teleporting out was the best option, it was enough to tip the scales in his mind, and he sends out Tattersail for her to evolve. "We take what we can, leave the rest behind, and try to teleport back." And he tries to tell himself that it isn't his fault that these pokemon are getting left to die.

((I've had a finalized carrying plan in the OoC for a bit now. We'll still use that, but instead of evolving the geodude, we'll evolve Tattersail and see if we can use her to GTFO and move past this part.))

Mark would look up at Matt as the older boy spoke, but that glum, empty look in his eyes didn't disappear despite the attempt to cheer him up. "N-no, I-..." He was the one that brought everyone here in the first place, without a real plan, or any idea what they were in for. Heck, he'd even changed his mind on where they were going at the last second for Arceus' sake! I'm just a dumb, lonely, hurting kid. Why do these people and pokemon keep listening to me?

Mark didn't speak that thought out-loud. He just didn't have much spirit left to speak in general at this point. Instead, he looks over at the cart with Marick in it. Still silent, he marched off to help Mina with moving those cages for their escape rout. He'd done one, and only one, thing right today, and he wasn't going to let that go to waste. He didn't need to be in the room to know when Tattersail was evolved, or to let her know what they had planned, after all. Him just standing around doing nothing was just so... pointless.

Mark bottled up his emotions as tightly as he could as that glow began to suffuse his pokemon, not wanting her to feel the recrimination and guilt that was already drowning him... well, as much as he could actually shield his mind from the potent psychic type, at least. Given her empathic nature, the emotional agony her trainer was in would likely not be well hidden at this point.

However, when he began preparing his thoughts to give her a long, detailed explanation, Wain spoke... and the pain would become muted. Not disappearing entirely, but fading to a focus that was run through with fear. So quickly? I didn't think they'd be able to get here from the camp this fast... With no time to waste, Mark sent her his experiences of the battle instead, relying on her mental fortitude (aka, high special defense vs his special attack of literally 0) and quick wit to figure out that they had won two battles since her fainting, but were now in full-on retreat. And that they needed her to work as their ferry to get themselves and the pokemon they had chosen to save out.

Mentally, he tells Tattersail, <Sorry. Didn't have time to go back. Need to go now, can you lift the steel types in the cart out of the hole in this room?> A hole he happened to be looking at, so he sent her an image of the cages leading up, and where it was located so that she could make an informed guess. He also asks <How far do you need to be from the ruins to teleport?>

Out loud, the kid shouts to the group, "T-then let's grab the pokemon we can, a-and let's get out! Wain, the Seranix will need to be in a pokeball to be teleported. Pellena, cart. Matt, travois. Mina, let's grab the Vespiqueen." He goes back, picks up the unconscious, shadowed Ralts, and puts it in his bag, letting the little psychic type hang slightly, but leaving it still secure enough for transport. "Last one through, close the door. We'll put the extra cages on the other side in the way to buy us time to ferry the pokemon we have out and then we run until Tattersail has a chance to get us all out." Which meant he was getting teleported last, to provide his psychic type an anchor to teleport directly to the group as they made their escape. "If we have time, dump healing items on the pokemon we still have standing. We might need to fight a grunt or two on the way out."

Fear can be a good motivator at times. Especially when you've been experiencing it for so long that it's almost a constant companion. And heck, impressively, the kid even manages to keep most of it out of his voice.

And his list didn't include the Taskmaster for a reason. He just doesn't see there being any reality in which the guy is actually useful to them, so he's not even bothering to say anything to the man.

Mark can hear Tattersail grumbling to herself about the lack of nice, cushy Pokémon Center but she responds clearly enough. <Yes, I can do that.>

Shortly every last unconscious Pokémon – either on Mark’s mental list or not – is floating down the hall and out the hole in the ceiling. Despite her bravado, Mark can tell that there is real effort involved in moving the bodies – definitely not something she could do all the way back to town on foot.

<How far do you need to be from the ruins to teleport?>

<Not far,> she replies with confidence.

"T-then let's grab the pokemon we can, a-and let's get out! Wain, the Seranix will need to be in a pokeball to be teleported. Pellena, cart. Matt, travois. Mina, let's grab the Vespiqueen."

“C’mere, sweetheart, let’s get you safe,” Mina coaxes the Serranix into a Pokéball, which promptly vanishes off to Box Storage ((-1 Pokéball for Mina, 4 remaining)) and moves to help with the Vespiquen but the Vespiquen has been telekinetically floated away via Tattersail’s Confusion. She checks to make sure the group isn’t leaving anything important behind instead.

He watches the display with a dropped jaw, mentally chastising, <Don't push yourself too much...> But there's no real anger there, and the words are colored with legitimate pride at what she's able to accomplish. <Once we get far enough, set down the pokemon that were on my 'list' and teleport the Makuhita, Geodude, Happiny, Slackoth and Marick to the pokemon center.> That was every unconscious pokemon that they weren't able to get out before this, and with the steel type out of the cart Pellena should be able to keep up with the group easier. It also allowed her to carry the zigzagoon in the wheelbarrow instead of relying on the taskmaster to do it for them. <After that, start teleporting people out, starting with Pellena and the cart, then Matt and the pokemon he's carrying, then Wain and the travois, then Mina, the taskmaster, the vespiqueen, and ralts, and then on the last trip pick up me and the still conscious pokemon.>

That was his plan. It likely would not survive contact with the enemy, but it seemed like a good order to go in to the young trainer... even if something told him that Tattersail might break from the plan the instant it looked like he was going to personally be in danger.

Out-loud, Mark manages to say, "O-Okay... well, let's go everyone! Last person through the door, drag cages in front, last person out the hole knock the top cages down to slow Bandra, and..." Still shocked at how suddenly the group's prospects had changed, Mark moved to the door, ignoring any of the various items in the room that they had already looked at. "Tattersail will start teleporting the moment we're clear, starting with all of the pokemon we were unable to rescue in the first place."

Shooting the taskmaster an icy glare, he tells Matt, "Keep a close eye on that one, and keep him moving." There was still a not-insubstantial part of him that wanted to see the taskmaster bleeding out on the floor... but that rage was still held in check by Mark's gentle nature, and his sense that it would not be true justice for the monstrous acts that the man had committed.
