Matt:

You wake up an hour or so later ((9 PM)) when you feel uncomfortable levels of heat coming out of your pack. It’s also shaking and making strange noises – the Egg is hatching!

The Pokémon that emerges is quadrupedal, bright orange with liberal splotches of sooty black all over its body. It mostly resembles a salamander, and when it sees you its mouth gapes open in gurgly demand. The Pokédex identifies it as a Pyrofyl – one of the Helnith region’s traditional starter Pokémon.

Pokemon: Pyrofyl
Type: Fire
Ability: Blaze
Gender: Male
Level: 5
Held Item: NONE
Stats--
HP: 20
Attack: 12
Def: 11
Sp. Attack: 12
Sp. Def: 11
Speed: 12
Moves:
Harden
Tackle
Ember
Frenzy Plant (Egg Move)

----------------

Mark:

The nurse tells you she’s heard of a Cologne stall near Trainer Hill. Apparently he used to be in Ternai Town, but moved after the town was taken over by Bandra.

Chevalin seems ambivalent and doesn’t give Mark her full attention but with the help of the other Pokémon she does get some exercise ((-6% Shadow Gauge, 29% remaining)).

With sweat dripping down my face from the sudden increase in temperature coming from my backpack, I frantically open it to see what on gods green earth is going on. Seeing a strange face looking back out at me as I open it startles me as I fall backwards. After the pokedex informs me of its move set and what it is, I can't help but ask, "What's an egg move? Oh, I suppose that gurgle must mean you're hungry.... ahhh lets see what I have in here..... Ah, here's some trail mix if you like that.... else the only other stuff I have are plain berries. Sorry bud."
I look around to see if the Cosmas' left or not, reckon they did since I didn't hear any singing when I was woken up. Oh well, least I wasn't jumped by Bandra goons.

Matt:

The Pokédex informs you that Egg Moves are attacks that are inherited when the Pokémon’s father knows the attack, usually because the father is a different species from the mother.

Meanwhile the new baby devours the trail mix, and rapidly begins making inroads on the berries too. Once those are gone he makes the demanding gurgle again. (( -Trail mix, -non-Pokémon berrries, -1 Rawst Berry, -1 Aspear Berry, -1 Iapapa Berry, 0 remaining.))

The Cosmas have drifted off out of sight, but you can still hear them nearby, faintly - they’re chattering with each other in Pokéspeak rather than singing now.

Trainer Hill. A lot was pointing him there, between his lack of money, need for extra training and pokemon gear, the promise he's made to Chevlain to check it out (even if she wasn't actually interested in the arm, he had promised.) And now there was going to be Cologne as well, and he had two pokemon that could benefit from it. He had to go there soon.

But he also owed Wain. After the ranger helped him get his steel type back, Mark was not going to flake out on that promise and leave town, and he would be going to the ranger's station come the morning.

A morning that would come quickly enough, since once he's done with the quick session with Chevlain, Mark went to the room he'd been using, took off his arm, and flopped into bed. Worn out, feeling simultaneously stretched thin and like he's finished a marathon, he would lay half-covered by the blanket until a dreamless sleep took him.

You wake up about 6 AM. There is no sign of Ranger Wain; when asked, the nurse tells you he’d taken off north with Pellana shortly after the Skybreak City police took the Taskmaster away yesterday.

Matt:

Both Pokémon look at each other, give their respective equivalents of a shrug, and wander off into the dark.

The new baby, meanwhile, is getting progressively louder.

Mark would have lain in bed for a bit, just thinking about how things had been going the last few days, and where he’d been in it, and he decided that he didn’t much like the direction that he was going. Skirting at the edge of a nervous breakdown constantly, stuttering more and more, playing at being a soldier... a soldier for Arceus’ sake! He was an artist, and a kid at that. He might know first aid and basic survival skills, but he was hardly cut out to be an actual member of the military, but he kept trying to think like one.

It wasn’t going to work. It wasn’t working at the moment either. This picture and story in his head was going to end with him alone, and likely with him dead, his pokemon taken by Bandra for whatever they were planning. And Mark didn’t particularly like this picture.

So he came up with a new one. A picture that he wanted to happen, him going to a trade school to study art and get a degree as a proper ranger. Someone who helped other people, who lived honestly and was reliable. Someone that pokemon and people would want to come to when they needed a hand. He was... pretty far from that. And he realized with some resignation that his decision to hide how aggressive and violent his Ariados had become was... well, pretty clearly a mistake. He didn’t know how to help or change his starter pokemon, and hiding the large spider would only make things worse for both of them when the truth came out.

... He had to tell Wain, or, failing that, someone else who might know what to do.

So at around 7 am he left his room, re-centered, knowing what he was doing and where he was going with his life, focused on who he wanted to be instead of worrying what people expected him to be or focusing on just staying alive. And he knew exactly what he was going to say. So, walking up to the nurse, Mark calmly and without stuttering asks her about Wain’s whereabouts and...

Oh.

Well, that was awkward.

A little bit of the timid boy would come back as he asks, “Oh, uh, did he say when he would be back?” And, given that the ranger likely hadn’t, he would sigh, take out his phone, and send a message to the ranger saying, <Wain, it’s Mark. I owe you more than I can say. Any time or anything you need me for, let me know, I will be there.>

After that, if it isn’t busy in the pokemon center, Mark will then ask the nurse. “Can I... talk to you about something? Before it starts getting crazy in here?”

"Shhhh quiet little guy... I really don't want attention drawn to us.... What is it you want buddy? Food? Water? A battle?" I say pausing in between the questions in hopes it might know what I'm saying. Just to add an indicator, I make hand motions of eating and chewing when asking about food, cupped hands as if drinking for water, and a very bad boxing impersonation at battling. Depending on which it might respond to will indicate if I'm going berry hunting as well, or giving the new addition some water. Battling will have to be something like... attacking a bush or tree or some inanimate object so that nobody is getting injured.

”Oh, uh, did he say when he would be back?”

The nurse shakes her head no. “He’s taking care of a Shadow Pokémon outbreak up by Ceris. He might not be back for a while if the Ranger Union doesn’t need him down here; they’re very short staffed.”

There is no immediate response to your text, but it is 7 AM after a very busy day for the Ranger.

”Can I... talk to you about something? Before it starts getting crazy in here?”

“Of course!” the nurse replies.

Matt:

When you start making hand motions, the hatchling starts nosing at your palms as though expecting to find something, nipping occasionally. Apparently unsuccessful, his cries increase in volume again.

Knot twisting in his stomach as the actual moment comes upon him, but he's decided to do this, so he swallows down his nervousness and he says, "Well, my Ariados... he's always been kinda aggressive and anti-social. As a spinarak he was just protective of me, but since we got back here and he's evolved, he's just..." Taking a deep breath and clenching his robotic hand on the counter, Mark continues, "He's started getting violent. At first I didn't think much about it, since it was just the same thing as before, but clicking mandibles when making the defensive display. But after the Bandra attack on the town, after he took down a grunt because I told him to get the man off of Mina, he's gotten less controlled. I don't think he'll hurt me, but I also... I..."

Another breath. "I don't know how to help him. I-I'm afraid he'll hurt someone else when I'm not looking. I don't want to lose him, but I'm s-so scared that I won't be able to control him that I'm just..." Damn, he kept stuttering, despite the resolve. Seems the habit was going to be hard to break out of, even if he'd made a conscious decision to fix his speech patterns and get better. "I need help. He's my starter, he deserves a life o-outside of a storage box, but I don't know how to make him safe enough to give him that life. So... what should I do?"

Matt:

You aren’t searching for long before one of the leaves you grab squeals and rips out of your hand.

Dainty hooves go flying past your head and something quadrupedal lands on the ground nearby. It’s difficult to make out more detail in the dark but the Pokédex identifies your assailant as a Twiggin: shrieking in Pokéspeak, what little of its body language you can see is tense and angry.

It’s probably not helping that the baby hasn’t quieted one jot through this whole encounter.

You can hear your other Pokémon off in the distance, but it’s going to be a while before they’re in range to help. ((Two rounds to hold off the angry antelope Pokémon. ))

Twiggin: 80/80

----------------

Mark:

The nurse seems to give this appropriate consideration. “I’m not a Pokémon behaviorist, but I know a few things you can do.

First, keep him away from humans and other Pokémon until he starts behaving himself. You said he started this because he was trying to protect you, so make sure there isn’t anything to protect you from.

Try starting his training over with the basics – not even battling, I mean things like sit, stop, stay, come – don’t do anything else until he listens to you without question on those basics. Keep your tone firm, let him know who’s in charge. Reward good behavior and punish bad – and be consistent with both. Since he’s evolved now it’s going to be more difficult, and you’re going to need to keep an extra sharp watch on him, but don’t give up!

Also, you should know that some Pokémon have more trouble distinguishing between humans than others; it’s not uncommon in Bug Pokémon, especially species that aren’t social by default. So if he’s gotten more aggressive since he attacked a human once, now he thinks it’s okay to snap at humans in general – so don’t let him do that at all.”

Finally she scribbles out a note. “And if you think you need it, there is an older couple up in Rieva that run the herb shop there. Give them this, and they’ll give you an oil you can put on anything your Ariados decides to bite – it’s harmless but very bitter, so even Pokémon that like bitter flavors won’t like the taste.”

((Note from Nurse Joy Re: Biting Problem added to inventory.))

"Aghhh come here you little hothead." I say as I pick up the Pyrofyl up and running as fast as my legs could carry me towards where Poliwhirl and Gastly wandered off to. Keeping as wide a berth as possible from the mad grass type.

The Grass type doesn’t seem to be listening, as it fires off a leafy attack with astonishing accuracy – every single one hits you, slashing up you clothes and backpack, despite the dark and underbrush between you and the angry Pokémon. (The baby Pyrofyl quiets momentarily as he bites down on a leaf lodged in your pack, but apparently doesn’t find the leaf to his taste as he starts wailing again almost immediately.) The Pokédex identifies the attack as Magical Leaf.

Fortunately, running for it helped close the distance between you and your Gastly, and he’s now in range to be of use. Poli however is still some distance away ((two rounds)), as the two were foraging in opposite directions.

Gastly: 48/48

Mark nods along as the nurse goes through her advice, tucking the note away when she hands it to him. He mentally asks himself, How am I going to have time to do all of these things? He would have to find some, or need to make it. Out loud he says, "Thank you. I'll do my best. Um, I need to try to de-shadow my pokemon a little bit more, but after I do that could you use a hand around here today?" Both because he felt like he should repay the nurse for being understanding rather than taking his ariados away, and because doing something other than battle planning and doing some simple labor would be helpful for him to get into the right mindset.

Matt:

Your Gastly looks distinctly puzzled by this request, but obediently targets you with the attack and everything fades out...

((Later: ))

You wake up around 8 AM, feeling very sore. The angry Twiggin is gone, and Poli has caught up and is dozing nearby. It’s very quiet, and after a moment you remember why that’s notable: the baby Pyrofyl is also missing.

Mark nods at that suggestion, more than happy to try and help those pokemon now that they were somewhere safe, and he says, "Alright, I'll be in around to give them lunch and dinner today. First thing's first though..." He pulls out a greatball and gives the nurse his biggest grin. "It's time for me to put my Aaron back on my team." He'd put his skarmory back in storage for now. While Tarr would likely be put back on the team in place of Corphish later, the water type would be useful for de-shadowing his pokemon now.

... He needed to see if there was something that could increase his belt space up on Trainer hill.
