"According to the newspaper yes, they were spotted there. Have you been to Ternai town? You sound concerned.. Everything okay?" It seemed a bit odd to me the way she sounded a bit panicked. I suppose there's more to these acquaintances than meets the eye. Also, if Mark's not with her, where could he be? "I can try giving Mark a call to fill him in as well since he's not with you. I'm sure you've been busy getting things back into working order since our trip to the Ruins."

I’m fine.” And as far as you can tell over the phone, she sounds sincere.

"I can try giving Mark a call to fill him in as well since he's not with you. I'm sure you've been busy getting things back into working order since our trip to the Ruins."

Okay. Talk to you later!

Ah. That was the strategy here. And Mark was now super sad that he hadn't kept Perish Song on Fisher, because that would immediately end these shenanigans. Alas. Instead, he'd have to do what he could in the time that he had Fisher awake and he commended, "Fisher, use Ice Shard."

As I leave the Elder Hall behind and head towards the city gates I check the map on the pokedex.

Oh... woops... Here I thought Ternai town was where the motley crew was typically hunkered down at. Looks like Ternai town is further north. I guess that makes the Bandra big wigs a bit further than what I had thought, which is good. Unless Mark went up that way for some reason... which would be bad. Very bad.

Guess it's time to call up Mark and see what he's up too.

As I try calling Mark the phone rings and rings, after the fourth I end the call, thinking that he must be busy. Perhaps a text message would be better.

"Hey Mark! This is Matt! I'm in Skybreak city and see in the newspaper that Darrin and Hannah were spotted in Ternai town! Might want to be careful if they're out and about, wouldn't want to get caught by them! Take care friend!" After checking the message to make sure it sounds okay, I hit the big "Send" button.

"Well that should take care of that. I uhm.... think I'll head back to the pokecenter and try that... massaging... on Ratman..." I say trying to hold in crying. My eyes water and as my nose starts to run I straighten my posture and move forward determined to get stronger so this never happens again.

Mark received that text from the older trainer one his walk, and he sends back, "Thanks for letting me know. I'll be sure to stay safe." Attacking Trainer Hill would be stupid and suicidal, so Mark wasn't the most worried for his safety... but there was a risk to the town he just left. With a frown, Mark relays the message to Wain as well, though the ranger probably already knew.

Mina:

((Time travel time! Four hours of Trainer Hill battling, begin!))

Mina had chosen Pidgey, Oodramer, and Sandshrew for her three – Serranix was both too shy and too far out of the five level range requirements, Houndoom was still Shadowed and she didn’t want to throw in both Natu and Pidgey for type coverage reasons. She still hadn’t gotten any move tutoring done, so this was going to be rough, but Mina reasoned she only needed to do well enough to stock up on Revives, which she hoped was doable right now.

Mina gave Pidgey a Chahal Berry for the duration. Pity her Sitrus plant wasn’t due to fruit for another hour or so, and she didn’t have enough Charti Berries to risk right now; one of those would have been better.

((Trainer Hill Match 1 (of 8): ))

For the first match, the battlefield was liberally covered in sharp, pointy stones – Stealth Rock. At least no one will kill me if I lose this one, Mina reflected irritably.

There wasn’t much choice here as far as what Pokémon she could use, so Mina sent out Sandshrew. ((-4 HP from Stealth Rock))

Her opponent sent out a steely mass of shell and spikes Mina recognized as a Forretress. ((-12 HP from Stealth Rock))

Mina frowned, uncertain. Most of Sandshrew’s attacks would do, at best, normal damage to the Steel/Bug type, but switching would do damage to whoever she sent out instead. She opted for Defense Curl, with plans to call for Rollout the next round – she thought Forretress was a tanky sort of Pokémon, hopefully this wouldn’t hurt much.

Forretress uses Rapid Spin!
Sandshrew is hit for 7 damage!

And all the stones on the opposing side were spun away.

Mina only restrained herself from complaining about rigged matches with difficulty.

Sandshrew uses Defense Curl!
Sandshrew’s Defense rises!

Forretress uses Toxic Spikes!
Toxic Spikes cover the ground!

Sandshrew uses Rollout!
Forretress is hit for 9 damage!

Forretress uses Toxic Spikes!
Toxic Spikes cover the ground!

Huh? That seems redundant…

Sandshrew uses Rollout!
Forretress is hit for 18 damage!

Forretress uses Protect!

Sandshrew uses Rollout!
Forretress is Protecting itself!

Well that was annoying. They really needed to do something about that super-high Defense… “Rock Smash!”

Forretress uses Natural Gift!
Sandshrew is hit for 13 damage!

Sandshrew uses Rock Smash!
Forretress is hit for 7 damage!
Forretress’ Defense falls!

“Again!”

Forretress uses Natural Gift!
Sandshrew is hit for 13 damage!

Sandshrew uses Rock Smash!
Forretress is hit for 10 damage!
Forretress’ Defense falls!

Time to switch back to Rollout. Even if she wasted attacks on Protect, the Forretress wouldn’t be doing any more damage on those rounds, and Mina needed to avoid switching as much as possible.

Forretress uses Natural Gift!
Sandshrew is hit for 13 damage!
Sandshrew uses her held Sitrus Berry to restore 30 HP!

Sandshrew uses Rollout!
Critical hit!
Forretress is hit for 34 damage!

They were sooo close! “Again!”

Your opponent recalls Forretress!
Your opponent sends out Steelix!

Sandshrew uses Rollout!
It’s not very effective…
Steelix is hit for 3 damage!

Mina was not amused. “Rock Smash!”

Sandshrew uses Rock Smash!
It’s super effective!
Steelix is hit for 11 damage!
Steelix’s Defense falls!

Yes!

Steelix uses Ice Fang!
It’s super effective!
Sandshrew is hit for 25 damage!
Sandshrew is frozen solid!

No!

“Come on Sandshrew, break free! Rock Smash!”

To Mina’s surprise, there was a crack, and then another, and then her Sandshrew emerged in a broken shower of ice and slammed her claws into the Steelix’s lower jaw!

Sandshrew thaws out!
Sandshrew uses Rock Smash!
Critical hit!
It’s super effective!
Steelix is hit for 30 damage!
Steelix’s Defense falls! ((Whoo, good rolls!))

And then there was a deep rumbling noise coming from the Steelix that grew and grew until it was a deafening—

Steelix uses Roar!

Sandshrew vanished in a stream of light, back into her ball, and Mina bumped the button on Oodramer’s ball by accident trying to cover her own ears.

Pointed stones dug into Oodramer!
Oodramer loses 11 HP!

Oodramer is badly Poisoned by the Toxic Spikes!
Oodramer loses 5 HP from Poison!

Wait, badly Poisoned?

Not much she could do about it now, might as well make the best of it. “Bubblebeam!”

Oodramer uses Bubblebeam!
It’s super effective!
Steelix is hit for 43 damage!

Steelix uses Sandstorm!
A sandstorm brewed!

Oodramer loses 11 HP from Poison!
Oodramer is buffeted by the sandstorm for 5 HP!

Mina called for another Bubblebeam. Then a bright light flashed through the sandstorm and Mina realized her target had, yet again, switched out.

Your opponent recalls Steelix!
Your opponent sends out Aron!

Oodramer uses Bubblebeam!
It’s super effective!
Aron is hit for 38 damage!
Aron’s Speed falls!

Mina would have whistled in admiration if her mouth didn’t instantly fill with sand. That was a solid hit even with the sandstorm buffing the little Rock type!

Oodramer loses 16 HP from Poison!
Oodramer is buffeted by the sandstorm for 5 HP!
Oodramer uses its held Sitrus Berry to restore 30 HP!

Mina could hear her opponent swearing but couldn’t quite make out the words – “Hang in there Oodramer, we’ve got him on the ropes!” she called, hoping she wasn’t jinxing herself. “Bubblebeam again!”

Oodramer uses Bubblebeam!
It’s super effective!
Aron is hit for 38 damage!

Aron uses Iron Head!
It’s super effective!
Oodramer is hit for 104 damage!
Oodramer faints!

Mina let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d held.

“Sandshrew, you’re up again! Rock Smash!”

Pointed stones dig into Sandshrew!
Sandshrew loses 4 HP!

Sandshrew is badly Poisoned!

Sandshrew uses Rock Smash!
Critical hit!
It’s super effective!
Aron is hit for 33 damage!
Aron’s held Chople Berry halved the damage!
Aron faints!

Sandshrew takes 4 damage from Poison!

Out came the Forretress again.

“Rollout!” Pity they didn’t have time for another Defense Curl.

Forretress uses Protect!

Sandshrew uses Rollout!
Forretress is protecting itself!

Sandshrew takes 4 damage from Poison!
The sandstorm subsided.

Mina decided to take a calculated risk.

You recall Sandshrew!
You send out Pidgey!

Pointed stones dig into Pidgey!
Pidgey loses 19 HP!

But no Poison, Mina noticed.

Forretress uses Natural Gift!
Pidgey is hit for 29 damage!
Pidgey uses his held Chahal Berry to restore 20 HP!

Mina could dimly hear her opponent yell for ‘Selfdestruct’ and hurriedly called: “Gust!”

Pidgey uses Gust!
Critical hit!
Forretress is hit for 34 damage!
Forretress faints!

Out came the Steelix again. Mina belatedly remembered she was allowed a free switch now and took it to send out Sandshrew. ((-4 HP from Stealth Rock))

“Rock Smash.”

Sandshrew uses Rock Smash!
Steelix is hit for 15 damage!
Steelix’s Defense falls!

Not enough.

Steelix uses Ice Fang!
It’s super effective!
Sandshrew is hit for 25 damage!
Sandshrew faints!

Mina sent out Pidgey ((-19 HP from Stealth Rock)) and called for Gust; at least they could avoid that obscenely high Defense that way.

Pidgey uses Gust!
It’s not very effective…
Steelix is hit for 10 damage!

Steelix uses Ice Fang!
It’s super effective!
Pidgey is hit for 59 damage!
Pidgey faints!

Drat.

Her loss was announced, her Pokémon healed, her Pokémon’s held items restored, and the elevator took her back to the lobby.

((Stealth Rock and Toxic Spikes in effect – Mina’s side only.))

Sandshrew: 0/76
Oodramer: 0/88
Pidgey: 0/76

Forretress: 0/97
Steelix: 3/115 (Defense down 1 level)
Aron: 0/79

But this wasn’t the League Championships where she was barred from competing after one loss, and she needed those BP. So she got in line for another round.

Matt:

By the time darkness falls and curfew rolls around, you’re pretty sure this was a mistake. Pyrofyl is exhausted to the point he can barely muster enough energy to hiss at you, and since you’ve been pressing him so hard he’s doing that as much as his failed strength is allowing. On top of that you haven’t made nearly as much progress as it feels like you should have, even accounting for the Pokémon’s exhaustion:

Pokemon: Pyrofyl
Type: Fire
Ability: Blaze
Gender: Male
Level: 11
Held Item: NONE

Speed: 20 10
Moves: LIMIT SIX, DROP ONE!
Harden

Ember
Frenzy Plant (Egg Move)
Bind
Sun Lamp*

((*Denotes Helnith move

Your Pokémon has taken stat damage due to overtraining. The stat damage will heal at a rate of 10% per day (so the damage is 50% today, will be 40% tomorrow, 30% the day after etc.).

For review, here are the training rules:

You can train your Pokemon whenever you have some time to kill and a reasonable amount of space to train in. You train your Pokemon by working with them uninterrupted for a certain stretch of time (dependent on level); you can fluff it however you like. Beyond that, there are no specific requirements other than that your Pokemon must be in reasonable state to be trained (i.e. not unconscious, asleep, or similarly inconvenienced) and you the trainer must be involved in the training (not asleep or doing something that would significantly distract you).

You can train a Pokemon up one level in (current level/10 drop decimal) hour(s) (or half an hour if they’re below level 10). You may only train one Pokemon at a time using this method.

Limitations:

*You can only train one Pokemon at a time (i.e. leveling up both Sandshrew at level 11 and Pikachu at level 12 one level would take an hour EACH, so a total of two hours).

*Two trainers assisting each other can each level up a Pokemon (so if Misty were to help Draloed, she could level up Hedge from 13 to 14 while he levels up Ironsides from 10 to 11, and only an hour will be needed, not two).

*Each Pokemon is limited to a max of 3 levels by training in a day, and no more than 5 levels over a three day period. (Breaking this rule yields temporary stat loss and a Happiness hit due to exhaustion.)

*Pokemon that are Shadowed or otherwise disobedient must succeed an Obedience roll to get the level up.))

----------------

Mark:

If not for the fact that you went into the elevator and felt it move, you could be forgiven for thinking you hadn’t gone anywhere; the next battlefield is just as scorching hot as the last. Only your opponent has changed: she’s dressed mostly in black with heavy makeup, and sends out a Gloom.

Mina:

((Trainer Hill Match 2 (of 8): ))

Mina’s first instinct on seeing the Sandstorm was to send out Sandshrew, so she did.

Immediately afterwards it began to snow. Of course.

There was a Snover on the other side of the field. Mina was really regretting not having her Houndoom on hand; this was the second match in a row he would have been useful.

(Abruptly, she remembered she did still have that Time Flute from the ruins. She could use that on him, although the other group members needed it as much or more – she was surprised no one had asked after it once they got back, although that had been a bit crazy. Or she could give it to Ranger Wain, since it was technically the property of whoever ran the museum part of the Shrine before the war. Regardless, she couldn’t do anything with it now, so she put the thought aside for the time being.)

She thought about switching, but Oodramer didn’t actually have any super effective moves, and Pidgey would likely be switching into an Ice move – not ideal for a Flying type.

So she decided to stick it out. “Rock Smash!”

Snover uses Icy Wind!
It’s super effective!
Sandshrew is hit for 47 damage!
Sandshrew’s Speed falls!
Sandshrew restored 30 HP with her held Sitrus Berry!

Sandshrew uses Rock Smash!
It’s super effective!
Snover is hit for 28 damage!
Snover’s Defense falls!

Sandshrew is buffeted by hail!
Sandshrew loses 4 HP!

Mina could already tell this wasn’t going to work.

Snover uses Icy Wind!
It’s super effective!
Sandshrew is hit for 53 damage!
Sandshrew’s Speed falls!

Sandshrew uses Rock Smash!
It’s super effective!
Snover is hit for 29 damage!

Sandshrew is buffeted by hail!
Sandshrew loses 4 HP!
Sandshrew faints!

Feeling rather like she should rip the metaphorical band-aid off as quickly as possible, Mina sent out Pidgey and called for Gust.

Mina did some quick math in her head. “I yield!” Pidgey might be able to get in another solid hit but they still weren’t going to win this, she might as well get back in line now and hope for a better type matchup in the next battle.

((Hail in effect, 2 rounds remaining.

Sandshrew: 0/76
Oodramer: 0/88
Pidgey: 36/76 (recalled)

Snover: 0/80

While waiting in the aforementioned line, a trainer she eventually figured out had been her last opponent tracked Mina down.

“Hey, you’re that crazy chick with the Sandshrew and the Pidgey right? You did really good! I thought we were going to steamroll you but you really put up a fight! I’m Ryley by the way,” he introduced himself belatedly; Mina got the distinct impression he was a little scatter-brained. “Here, take this” he handed her something blue she identified afterwards as a Yache Berry “and maybe evolve your Pidgey. And maybe we can have a rematch sometime!”

They exchanged numbers and Mina watched him prance off, bemused. ((+1 Yache Berry))

Oh wow, a Gloom. Sending out Tattersail, Mark telepathically asked her, <How much do you want to bet they're going to spam toxic until it sticks, and then switch to something that can be incredibly hyper obnoxious? Let's burn it down as fast as possible. Use Confusion.>
