Mark and Mina:

((Pre message: ))

"Hey Mina! Doing alright outside of, you know, the bruising. De-shadowing is a bit painful it turns out, and I have no luck with Fisher's lullabies with keeping Sengar asleep. Been a bit rough because of that. Buuuuut I almost have Marick evolved, and I finally checked out trainer hill and got a few vitamins, so I've got that going for me! What have you been up to?"

Well, so much for asking Mark for help with Houndoom – Mina wasn’t going to ask him to wind up even more battered, she’d figure something else out.

“I tried sabotaging the Bandra operations in Keida, and got in some light spying. Not much luck there, but I did get a bunch more Berries and some new types too!” Mina showed him her spoils. "Oh! and that reminds me..." Mina dug out one of the Honey jars and handed it to Mark. "This is for you from the old couple who were looking for the Vespiquen we rescued." ((-1 Honey Mina, +1 Honey Mark))

((Post message: ))

"Huh. Well, that makes things a lot easier... and makes me feel a bit silly. So turns out I didn't need to put so much effort into the whole deshadowing thing... though, hmmm."

Mina facepalmed. “I wish you’d said something a day ago. I just gave that Time Flute we found in the Shrine of Light to a flutemaker.”

"He didn't use our system, so we can't be certain it's him... I don't think we told him about our system, did we?"

“We did not,” Mina replied.

Taking the honey, -you put this on special trees or opened it up to summon pokemon to you, right? He'd look that up later.- Mark tucks it away with his bandaged hand and tilts his head at Mina. So wait, she got to be this super spy and she didn't tell him about it or invite him to join? Well that... well that made perfect sense, actually. "So wait, you broke into Bandra, kicked their butts and got away without me?" Hey, he only sounded slightly betrayed, progress! Clearing his throat, he waves his robo hand in front of him and adds, "You know what, that makes perfect sense. Especially after the shrine of light and how many of their grunts saw me, they'll be looking for..." He looks pointedly at his prosthetic, flaps it once or twice to let the motors whirr, and shrugs. "I could disguise myself by taking it off, but then I become useless in other ways... So yeah, makes total sense you wouldn't include me." There. He didn't even feel a twinge of shock or betrayal that time.

Hesitating while he looks at the berries, -Mina got how many Sitrus berries?- he does add, "But uh... you shouldn't feel like you have to go alone. I-I could still-" Damn it no stuttering. "I could still back you up, I've still got binoculars that I can use to scout places out," those still weren't broken, thank Arceus, "and my team is getting pretty strong. We could pull you out if you needed it. Or you could work with someone else. Bandra's hurt a lot of people, so, it's not like you wouldn't be able to find someone willing to help if you don't want to do everything yourself..." He wasn't certain how he felt about some rando working with Mina, how reliable would they be after all, but if she was going to continue doing infiltration and sabotage work then some backup would still be good for her... and logically speaking, he wouldn't be much of a help in that.

((Post message))
"Well... I didn't think it would be quite as painful as it has been to deshadow my umbreon." He admitted, rubbing his middle with a bit of a wince. "To be fair, if I had that cleansing charm that Matt has I think Sengar would be mostly cured by now, but..." Well, at this point he was going to take whatever he could get to not need to manually deshadow his pokemon. "Where should we have him meet us? And should we let him in on our system... and maybe change it up to keep it from getting too obvious?"

Mark and Mina:

((Pre message: ))

"So wait, you broke into Bandra, kicked their butts and got away without me?"

“Well, not so much the ‘kicked their butts’ part,” Mina said consolingly. “I tried to release some of the Pokémon they had in the Daycare, and set some things on fire, but they caught on pretty quick and I didn’t stick around to see the results. What I mean is, I don’t think I did any lasting damage.”
"You know what, that makes perfect sense. Especially after the shrine of light and how many of their grunts saw me, they'll be looking for…I could disguise myself by taking it off, but then I become useless in other ways... So yeah, makes total sense you wouldn't include me.”

Which reminded Mina: at some point she should wash out the dye, her hair was still blue.

"But uh... you shouldn't feel like you have to go alone. I-I could still- I could still back you up, I've still got binoculars that I can use to scout places out, and my team is getting pretty strong. We could pull you out if you needed it. Or you could work with someone else. Bandra's hurt a lot of people, so, it's not like you wouldn't be able to find someone willing to help if you don't want to do everything yourself..."

“It wasn’t that,” which was true exactly as far as it went and no farther, “Matt told me Hannah was in Ternai and I didn’t think there would be time to get everyone back together for the strike without risking her coming back first.” Which very diplomatically did not mention anything about her doubts about the rest of the party after the Shrine of Light mess…

((Post message: ))

"Well... I didn't think it would be quite as painful as it has been to deshadow my umbreon. To be fair, if I had that cleansing charm that Matt has I think Sengar would be mostly cured by now, but..."

“We should get more of those,” Mina observed. “Because I don’t think this is going to be the last time we need to deShadow Pokémon, unfortunately.”

"Where should we have him meet us?"

We’re the ones with the Teleporters,” Mina pointed out. “Where is he? We could just head to the Pokémon Center nearest him and wait for him.”

"And should we let him in on our system... and maybe change it up to keep it from getting too obvious?"

“Sure, as long as it’s easy to remember and not something that seems out of place in normal conversation.”

Mark nodded along with everything Mina was saying, thinking that it had been a bit brash how she had gone off on her own regardless of the reasoning, but he was mostly still staring at those Sitrus berries while his brow bunches ever so slightly. "Wait. You got all of these sitrus berries from Bandra... like, they were storing them along with others, not distributing and using them?" Frowning as he considers that he begins mumbling to himself, "It's not like these wouldn't be useful, though I guess if they have too many grunts or the grunts have pokemon that will get taken down in one or two hits anyway they might not think their supply will last all too long, and while berry farms are a thing they still have a growing period and aren't an unlimited source, like potion stocks or what have..."

Trailing off, Mark's head snapped up to make eye contact and he said, "Mina. They're mass-producing poffins to improve their pokemon." That clicked in his mind as he tried to figure out what could be more useful than having all those sitrus berries on actual pokemon. "They have more berries of every type, right? Broken up into variety or something to try and mash the berries to get the desired effect...They're trying to mass produce poffins to give their front lines an edge that doesn't require training, shadowing, TM's or repeated battling. We've seen it on their officers, but that could have been from pokemon they took, poffins they found and hoarded to the top, or they'd been applied before everything started. But if they're continuing to mill them in Keida, then the plan is to get them on every pokemon they have to give them an edge over the other trainers in Helnith... and we know where they're doing it now. Or... er, that's my guess. Think we should tell Wain, maybe?"

"... Also we should definitely make more poffins. It's a multiple person job, right? Well, teach me how to do it and I'll happily help out." He didn't particularly enjoy the thought of fighting Bandra's beefed up goons without getting a few buffs of his own.

((Post-text))

We’re the ones with the Teleporters. Where is he? We could just head to the Pokémon Center nearest him and wait for him.”

"... Okay yeah, fair point." Mark mumbled, before typing out a quick message with his one thumb to tell Matt, -"Good to hear from you man, and that sounds absolutely fantastic. Where are you currently?"- Once he and Mina knew that, they could actually choose a location. "There. Should be just a few minutes, and we'll be good to go."

“Sure, as long as it’s easy to remember and not something that seems out of place in normal conversation.”

"Hmmm... I like the astral-ish sky theme we have going on. Maybe... no, starts is still pretty similar. Maybe storms? Shelter? Security? Storms is probably best, given it could come up in normal conversation with Bandra all around, but isn't so expected that someone could accidentally guess it."

Mark and Mina:

((Pre-message: ))

"Wait. You got all of these sitrus berries from Bandra... like, they were storing them along with others, not distributing and using them?"

“No, the Sitrus Berries I grew. The new type resister Berries were the ones I nabbed from Bandra – the Coba, the Rindo, the Occa, a few of the Passho, you know, all the ones that cover a type most of the Grunt Pokémon are usually weak to.” Then, feeling she needed to clarify, Mina added, “There were boxes and boxes of different kinds, though.”

"Mina. They're mass-producing poffins to improve their pokemon."

“Yes I know, they were making them in the Keida Contest Hall. I tried a little sabotage there but their Taskmaster is on task, sadly.”

"They have more berries of every type, right? “Some of their Grunts already had Poffin boosts. We’ve fought them before, remember?”

Think we should tell Wain, maybe?"

“Yes, absolutely. I don’t know how much he can do about it, but there’s no reason he shouldn’t know.”

"... Also we should definitely make more poffins. It's a multiple person job, right? Well, teach me how to do it and I'll happily help out."

“Sure,” Mina replied, while a part of her was busy recalling Pellana’s lessons and screaming loudly in protest, “but keep in mind the big hurdle is that we need a lot of Berries and a lot of variety of Berries.”

((Post-message: ))

"Hmmm... I like the astral-ish sky theme we have going on. Maybe... no, starts is still pretty similar. Maybe storms? Shelter? Security? Storms is probably best, given it could come up in normal conversation with Bandra all around, but isn't so expected that someone could accidentally guess it."

“Storms it is then,” Mina agreed.

Good to hear from you man, and that sounds absolutely fantastic. Where are you currently?

Gosh how long has it been since I left Ceris town again, couple of days?
Shaking my head to clear my thoughts I reply: "Currently a bit south east of Trainer Hill. I was mining when I came across the flute." And hit send.

"Oh." Mark managed to say, while mentally kicking himself. Of course she'd known, she'd been sabotaging things, you had to know what was going on to sabotage an operation. Even trying to be more confident didn't cure him of being dumb. "So... were they only making poffins there, or were other things going on?"

“Some of their Grunts already had Poffin boosts. We’ve fought them before, remember?”

"Could have stolen them from other towns when they raided the contest halls." He pointed out. "But now we can be pretty sure that's not where they're coming from, and that contest boosts will be getting less rare in the future. So... that's just good to know. You know?"

Checking his phone when he got Matt's response, Mark gave a little grunt and said, "Well. Would you look at that. He's near Trainer Hill. I was just there yesterday with Tattersail, and you've been there too, so I guess we're in luck. Guess we'll meet him there?"

Mark and Mina:

((Pre-message: ))

"So... were they only making poffins there, or were other things going on?"

“I’m pretty sure they were trying to breed Pokémon, I think they’re growing the Berries in the Spa” Mina had not personally witnessed that, but the dirt on that one Grunt’s arms had to come from somewhere, right? “and I know they’re sorting them there.”

Mina was wondering if she should push back on more explanation until they were all together again, to avoid repeating things.

”So... that's just good to know. You know?"

Mina didn’t feel like arguing so she just shrugged.

((Post-message: ))

“Yes, tell him we’ll meet him there as soon as possible.”

((I’ll let you guys continue to chat IC if you want, but in the interest of essCee not having to wait another week, I’m going to jump us to Trainer Hill and do that in parallel.))

----------------

Pinklady:

((New trainer intro, begin! ))

You find yourself inside the front lobby of Trainer Hill, part of the Helnith branch of the Battle Frontier. Everything is gleaming and new-looking, the furniture tasteful and elegant, the building itself clean and in good repair - unlike almost every other building in war-torn Helnith.

At the back of the lobby there’s a room-spanning front desk with multiple ladies checking in lines of Trainers - and a Nurse Joy at one end, with a much shorter line. Pokémon battles (current participants, from the look of it) are playing on the giant screens overhead. Some of them are obscured by sand, fog, or rain.

A giant notification board takes up one wall. A long list of items and Battle Point prices are listed on it, and a few trainers are perusing it. As you watch one emits a pleased ‘Yes!’ and a victorious fist pump before strutting off, presumably to cash in BP.

To one side there’s a coffee shop: there’s a bit of a line presently and you can see people scattered around munching on pastries or sipping coffee. A pair of teenage trainers literally appears in their midst out of thin air, a tiny Natu on the girl’s shoulder squawking as a twenty-something carrying out coffees nearly runs into them as a result and starts yelling.

Opposite the coffee shop is a little meditation area where a bearded old man in a monk robe is working with an onion-headed Pokémon while its trainer watches intently and a younger man, also in monk robes and presumably his assistant, is serving tea to all three parties.

----------------

Everyone:

Mark and Mina appear at Trainer Hill and are nearly run over by a man carrying two very hot coffees.

“Watch where you’re going!”

They manage to escape in short order, Mina apologizing and her Natu scolding the angry coffee man, before spotting Matt. Mina waves to get his attention.

Pinklady stood in awe of her dazzling surroundings. Even back home, she rarely ever saw such a busy building... only her very rare visits to Castelia City had her see so many people at once!

But there's a job to be done! Hopefully that "Mina" is still in the area, it did take me a little while to get here... but I know exactly who to see about that, the one person who meets every trainer who passes through an area!

Pinklady joins the thankfully short line for Nurse Joy. Hi! I'm looking for someone named Mina, have you seen her recently? she mentally recites as she watches one of the screens showing a battle.

Her eyes wander to the coffee shop. That's definitely the next priority! She giggles as there's a sudden disruption... what a cute little Natu.

Pinklady:

The nearest screen shows a Sandslash up against a Goldeen. Nozzles come out of the walls and fill the arena with fog – then there is movement from the Goldeen’s side of the field and the fog clears, to be replaced by a steady drizzle. Then the Sandslash spins and the battlefield is filled with a sandstorm instead. Then more rain…and that’s as far as the battle gets by the time you reach Nurse Joy.

The nurse greets you cheerfully considering it’s about 5 PM. “Hello, can I help you?”

Fate had been very clear about Mina’s description – black hair, brown eyes, bandages from wounds received several weeks prior. You’ve yet to see anyone by that description, and he wasn’t sure what the people she was traveling with now looked like – apparently there had been some attrition since the group left Aitel Island ((where you met Fate)) so he hasn’t met any of the others.

----------------

Everyone else:

Mina’s Natu hopped over to Matt and climbed up on his head to examine the Flute more closely. After a minute or two of this he made his way back to Mina, where he climbed up to her shoulder and then turned himself around to view the line of people waiting for Nurse Joy. And stared, and stared, and stared.

“You need to see the nurse my dear?” Mina asked her Pokémon.

“Nat.” No full-body head bob, but no full-body head shake either. Mina petted him and tried to think back how long ago his wing had been hurt.

"Hello stranger! I would like to apologize most profusely for getting Mark's and your pokemon shadowed and would like to cure it immediately if you'd both be so kind as to step outside away from other people so we don't go... scaring people. I can bring out Poliwhirl and Gastly, set your shadowed fellows to lullaby land, and cure them with this lovely flute!"

“If you can send them to lullaby land, maybe save the Flute?” Mina was having second and third thoughts about giving the one they’d found in the Shrine of Light back to its donor, since she was having to put the rest of the group through extra trouble. Too late now!

"Hello! Mina- I'm looking for someone called Mina! And have you seen her - someone with that name recently? Oh, and could you make my Pokemon feel better, please?"

Pinklady unhooks her Pokeballs from where she keeps them and hands them to the Nurse.

The attrition is a bit worrying to think about... but I'm sure things will be fine! I've got a good feeling about things going forward.

Well, a bunch of projects going on, then… and that probably meant that it was going to be stupidly well defended. Or at least stupidly well staffed, which wasn’t going to be easy to take on with their current group, and Mark had no desire to repeat what had happened at the Shrine. So for now, there wasn’t much Mark and Mina could do about Bandra’s projects besides telling Wain about them…

Fortunately, the breeding project would take Bandra time to see any fruit, since the eggs had to hatch and then be trained carefully to make the pokemon from it see any use. Heck, a raid might be able to take some of those eggs and allow their team to make use of Bandra’s efforts, since there was probably time to organize one before the eggs hatched. For now though, Mark would leave it at that and would just give Mina a nod and leave it at that. They could discuss it when the team was back together.

((At the meeting))
Mark apologies to the waiter as well, stepping back and out of the way for the poor employee to pass before power walking to catch back up with Mina. He waved to Matt and said, “Well, I’ve got Fisher here with me so I can put whatever pokemon we’re de-shadowing to sleep to keep them from rampaging, but before that… if you have that charm that makes the process faster, I think I can just use that and the cologne I purchased to finish curing Sengar, so we can save a charge on your flute.” That charm, the cologne and five rounds of combat should be enough to cure what shadowing remained on the dark type.

Pinklady:

The nurse takes your Pokémon and runs them through the healing machine, restoring them to full health and energy.

“No one by that name has been by today, but keep an eye open, I’m sure your friend will turn up!”

About the time Nurse Joy is handing you back your Pokémon, you distantly hear someone say (slightly muffled by other conversations and the room’s acoustics):

“…Mina? Mind if I…shadow…pokemon?” A middle-aged man is talking to the teenagers with the Natu. The bird Pokémon in question is staring at you - or at least in your direction.

----------------

Mark and Mina (pre-meeting):

You get a message off to Ranger Wain about the Bandra Poffin and probable breeding operations in Keida. He sends a brief response back telling you he’ll let the other Rangers in the region know.

----------------

Everyone:

“How about you Mina? Mind if I flute the shadow from your pokemon?”

“Um…”

Houndoom was one of her more powerful Pokémon. Right now he was actively dangerous. She didn’t really want to put her friends out…but she’d be putting them out more if she needed them to spend the afternoon de-Shadowing him the hard way, she realized.

“…okay, but let me trade you my Vivid Scent for it.”

She wondered if she should bring up the Flute maker, and decided not to unless it came up - really what had she been thinking, they were badly outmatched as it was, they couldn’t afford to give away anything that would give them an advantage when people and Pokemon could die…Too late now, learn from it and move on, Mina!

“I'm also curious about something... People were saying there's a rift near one of the towns where shadow pokemon were coming through... Would one of these flutes instantly KO a wild shadow pokemon?"

“…I…doubt it? Why would it do that?” Mina asked, puzzled. “It doesn’t knock out the caught Pokémon, does it?” Not that it mattered right now, with a Pokémon Center just across the room, but that was definitely a drawback if they needed to use one while under attack by Bandra…

"Oh! I think she's over there! Have a good day, miss!" She gives Nurse Joy a little wave and then walks over to the group. She smiles at the staring Natu.

How exciting, this is it! My beginning of an important adventure!

The others will soon find themselves interrupted by a young adult lady. She's got a cheery, even excited, look. Her outfit consists of a black scarf worn like a tube top; a purple skirt with six small, simple crane claws attached around its circumference, five of them holding Pokeballs; leggings terminating in heavy brown boots; and a shoulder duffel bag. Attire aside, she also has a strikingly great amount of dark green hair. She waves.

"Hi there! You've gotta be the savers of the region - Mina and her latest friends, right?"

“Yeah, I’ve gotten him down to forty two percent shadowing already, so I’m not really looking to throw out all of that effort and use a charge on one of our more limited and probably necessary items… Just using the tag should be fine.” Mark confirmed, before squinting a bit at Matt’s question. “You wouldn’t knock any pokemon out, I don’t think, and I’m pretty sure most of the pokemon that come out of a rift are spectral any-“

Then a new arrival was upon them, and Mark’s attention was drawn to Pinklady. He waves his prosthetic hand at her and says, “Uh, I wouldn’t exactly call us saviors or anything, but…” Tilting his head to the side he mumbles, “Mina, do you know this girl?”

Everyone:

Up close, Pinklady is able to note that Fate’s description of Mina was out of date: the bandages are gone and at some point she dyed her hair blue. The brown eyes match, though, and the dye job is mottled and uneven and yes, on inspection the roots are still black. She’s rather pale considering the tropical climate, and her clothes - T-shirt, jeans, vest, tennis shoes - are worn and faded from long use.

”Mina, do you know this girl?”

“I don’t think so,” Mina whispered back. Then louder, and to the newcomer, she said “Hi. Have we met?”

Oh! Well, that explains it. Especially the hair!

Pinklady waves back to Mark.

"Nope! We've never met before in our lives! But I was sent by Fate - and maybe fate itself - to help you all out, so that will probably change soon! I'm Pinklady, future Pokemon ranger!"

At the name, Mina’s expression mostly cleared. “He did mention you, although he didn’t think you were going to make it.”

Time for a little test; Mina would much rather be thought of as a bit forgetful than to find out that, say, the lady before her was a Bandra agent who had killed and replaced the original…though if that ended up being the case she had no way to let the rest of the group know without being obvious. Note to self: work something out with Mark later.

“From Sinnoh, wasn’t it?”

And if she didn’t get corrected…then they had a problem.
