Well, a Luxray really limited his options a bit right off the bat. While Marick wasn't exactly weak to the electric type, he also wouldn't really stand up for very long to any special attacks it threw out regardless... Fisher was, of course, not an option. Which left Tattersail. Tossing out his psychic type, Mark told her, "Alright 'Sail, let's start this off with a Confusion!"

You send out Tattersail!
Tattersail’s Attack falls from Luxray’s Intimidate!

Tattersail uses Confusion!
Luxray is hit for 33 damage!

Luxray uses Bite!
It’s super effective!
Tattersail is hit for 62 damage!

Tattersail: 34/96 (Intimitdated)

Luxray: 70/103

Mina:

Once she’d assured herself that there wasn’t anything more anyone needed her for, Mina had Natu Teleport her back to her Berry plots. She selected a few varieties she thought would be useful for Poffin, planted and watered them, then went back to Trainer Hill to hopefully squeeze in a few battles.

... Ah crud... wait. I really shouldn't be using Tattersail in these competitions. Mark realized. There was a not insubstantial chance that he'd get knocked out with her... so he recalls his psychic type and sends out Marick. Because Luxray didn't have the ability to learn Pursuit, if he recalled correctly.

After scratching my head and sighing, mumbling a bit about how confusing these other regions are I ask, "Is there a way to increase the soil so that they would grow more abundantly? Seems berries are pretty scarce as is, likely more so if people are hoarding tree's or picking the entire tree's stash for themselves. Like Bandra."
Phew, it's getting late. At least it feels really late. This tired, achy old body isn't as young as it once was. I should do what that youngster Mark did, go and do some practice battles. Wouldn't hurt to gain knowledge, especially since my wallet's broke after foolishly buying so much cologne when all I had to do was play a flute to unshadow pokemon.

You realize Mina’s already left (again) and didn’t hear a word of that, but Trainer Hill is still open. ((Which challenge and which Pokémon are you using? Friendly reminder: all Pokémon chosen must be within five levels of each other.))

Now that his steel type was out, Mark said, "Alright Marick, use Mud Slap." This first pokemon was... going to certainly be rough.

Marick is hit for 37 damage!

Marick uses Mud-Slap!
It’s super effective!
Luxray uses held Shuca Berry to reduce the damage!
Luxray is hit for 11 damage!
Luxray’s Accuracy falls!

The Luxray slams viciously into Marick, its body sparking, but it isn’t quite able to get through his sturdy hide. Marick seems to be offended the hit hurts as much as it does, and sprays mud back almost as viciously. ((So, so close to a crit for both of them!))

Tattersail: 34/96 (recalled)
Marick: 40/88 (Intimidated)

Well, this definitely wasn't going great for the little steel type, but the berry had been burnt through and the electric type's accuracy had been reduced. So with that as it was, Mark said, "Alright Marick, use Mud Slap again!"

((And if this works in any way similar to how the games go for me when the AI spams mud slap, this Luxray will literally never hit with anything except Swift ever again. ))

After waving to Mina as she teleported away again, Pinklady turned to Matt.

"Well, Matt, if she's got the berries handled, are you ready to head to the tournament... stuff, now! I haven't ever fought in a real tournament before! Couldja give me the rundown on our way back there?"

"Well, if I had any helpful tips I'd happily share them with you, however I have not entered any tournaments of any sort in this region, so to be honest (and frank) I do not have any sort of help. If experience has taught me anything, it's to use type advantages over your opponent. Yet at the same time, I would assume that a solid strategy would also help, like having different types of moves on your pokemon to account for any pokemon types your opponent might throw at you, to have an advantage over your pokemon. Say for example you have some... uh... awkward grass-bug type and your opponent sends out a fire type, you might want your grass-bug type to have some sort of water type attack move." I awkwardly say while slowly moving towards the training tower off in the distance. It doesn't take long before I start second guessing what I've just said to Pinklady and wonder if it's even GOOD advice that I gave, as it sounds pretty dumb looking back on it just a few seconds later.

Oh god, what if my advice lands her pokemon in hot water like the encounter at the shrine!? No, that can't happen... My problem at the Shrine was that I didn't remember an exit... Which had nothing to do with advice given. Though it was my idea for us to go there in the first place right? If so, that was bad advice... Like, REALLY bad advice... Ugh, I shouldn't advise anyone about anything....

"Well, if this is my first tournament ever, and your first tournament in the region, it sounds like this will be a great learning experience for both of us!"

She smiles and listens attentively as he describes type matchup strategy.

"That makes sense, sounds like some good advice! I'll make sure to think over that... there wasn't a ton of variety of types where I'm from. Maybe I should've left the forest more often!"

I sure am lucky to not be alone in this unfamiliar place, I'm learning so much already!

Well. That was... absolutely terrible for Marick. And with 'Sail as beaten up as she was, she probably couldn't take a hit if he switched her back in. So Mark figured he needed to accept that his little steel type go down, and he tells Marick, "Use mud slap." If the water/ground type missed and got its accuracy reduced and a bit more chip damage, then great! But Mark wasn't expecting miracles here.
