"No problem, so when do we start? What's the plan? Details girl, details!" I say with a flourish.

I mean, surely she can't think I'm a psychic and capable of reading her mind! Maybe a bit psycho after forgetting to put cheese on a pizza but it'll be fine. I sure didn't have any plans laid out, especially no contacts in this region. Pretty self explained there. I understand that these teenagers are a bit on the overly cautious side but surely people around here can't be that twisted....are they?

Matt, Mark, Mina:

(( Just wait until you meet Officer Darrin!))

Mina took a deep breath, and began. "A few days ago we met a little boy who had his Poochyena stolen. We think we've tracked down the fence involved, and we've set up a meeting with them for ten o'clock tonight, behind the Pokemon Center. Our goal is to apprehend them, and hopefully get the Pokemon back or at least find out what happened to it.

Ideally, I'd like for one of us to stake the area out at least a half-hour beforehand, to make sure they don't try to spring a trap on us. We're also going to want some way to trap the fence without being obvious about it, or follow them if they get away—preferably both." Mina lamented her Houndoom still being hospitalized; he'd be able to track the fence almost anywhere. "I told the fence to bring 'dog Pokemon' so they'll hopefully bring our quarry but I have no idea if they'll actually do it or what other Pokemon they'll bring. We have to expect at least some of them will obey the fence, and be ready for a fight." Mina heard a loud bzzzt sound and Mark's voice talking to someone down the hall; she spared a glance at the doorway but as he didn't sound hurt she dismissed it for now. "Also, I'm going to have to show up close to the meeting time; the Nurse doesn't want me to leave the Pokemon Center because..." Mina motioned to the bandages by way of explanation "...so I'm going to have to sneak out."

Matt, Mark, Mina:

((Gnomes can yell at me if I get his dialog all wrong. ))

"Stakeout works; I have a plan for getting there, but I'll be pushing my luck as it is without vanishing for hours on end. But I doubt the Nurse will mind if you stay out late," Mina took a piece of paper and a pen out of her pack and scribbled on it quickly, then handed it to Matt. "so here. This is my Pokedex number; send me a text if you see anything. I'll do my best to show up exactly at ten."

Out in the hall, Mark called. "Umm, M-Mina? I-I've got a problem..."

"One second. " Frowning, Mina excused herself and ducked out to see what the problem was.

((OoC: Aaaand time to clean up my little oops...))

Mark was in the lobby, leaning up against a wall; there was another trainer with him with a Pineco, tugging on him...wait, what?

Mina looked closer, then looked around. On further inspection, Mark wasn't leaning on the wall...there was a Magnemite stuck to his arm, and the Pokemon was then also stuck to the wall. Both Mark and the other trainer tried pulling Mark off, but the Magnemite got a very determined look in its singular eye and a bunch of pins and paperclips flew off the front desk to join the prosthetic.

"Oh dear. What happened?" Mina asked. Why do these things always seem to happen to us?

"I think it likes him," the unfamiliar trainer responded. To Mark he said, "Sorry about this..."

A loud shout made Mina jump nearly a foot in the air.

"You!" Nurse Joy advanced on Mina; the Johto trainer backed up a little in response. Natu, on her shoulder, made a noise that sounded suspiciously like 'Uh-oh!' and climbed along her shoulder until he was hidden behind Mina's head.

"You were supposed to stay here!"

"You said I had to be back by eight!" And here I am! Mina wanted to add.

"Not you!" Nurse Joy's arm snaked out behind her and plucked Natu off her shoulder. "You!"

Natu trilled out something that could have easily been 'ooo, busted!' or its equivalent before making a long protest, occasionally pointing at Mina with his un-bandaged wing; Mina had a strong suspicion that she should be defending herself but as she couldn't actually understand him, said nothing.

"Oh no you don't, you're going back to the recovery room and you're going to stay there this time!" The Nurse carried the little Psychic type off, expression stormy.

Mina had picked his Great Ball off her belt to give to the Nurse (and when had that gotten back there? This was one peril of training a teleporter that hadn't occurred to her...) but decided, on balance, that there were safer ways to do the same thing without drawing the attention of an irate Nurse. She got the attention of one of the Chansey that had come to help with the Magnemite instead.

"Chansey, would you give this to Nurse Joy when you get the chance? It's for my Natu." Mina handed her the ball. "Thank you."

((Natu's supposed to be in the hospital now! Fortunately for my daring plan, I'm autoing Mark right now...))

Mina spent a few moments seeing if there was anything she could do to help Mark ("Did you try just...taking your arm off?" "I-it's stuck...") but it was quickly becoming clear that he was going to be stuck there for at least long enough to miss their ten o'clock meeting. The Magnemite's trainer (whose name it transpired was Barret) left to get something he claimed would help, leaving a brief opportunity for them to talk.

"Mark, can I borrow Kirlia?" she explained why quietly; the Nurse was back, and Mina wasn't keen on her overhearing. Mark nodded afterwards, clearly not happy, but after a few minutes of instruction Mina had the green and white Psychic type swanning along behind her. Mina wasn't terribly pleased either; this was getting a lot more complicated than she liked. It was now her and a trainer who was largely unknown to her against the fence and whatever else. She couldn't be seen by the Nurse. She was using a borrowed Pokemon who may or may not obey her as her emergency escape rope. This was not shaping up to be a good night...

"I suppose I could take a gander at the area." I reply with a casual nod as I put the pokedex number in under Mina .

Retrieving Ratman from Nurse Joy where I absent mindedly left him sitting on the counter, I proceed out the door and glance around. Nothing out of the ordinary it would seem. The air is cooling off, people are few, houses are lit if but few of them as most people are likely sleeping. A few Zubat swoop over head, likely foraging. I slowly proceed to walk around the Center, watching for movement in the bushes. When nobody's around I decide that hiding in bushes wouldn't be a bad idea if a stolen dog pokemon wasn't involved. I mean, since one would figure a stolen dog would have a really keen sense of smell and would pinpoint my location easily. Pondering how to possibly hide better, I debated on a quick change and hiding my clothes to have my scent every where. Shaking my head out of the idea I figure hiding up in a tree amongst the thick foliage would give a better advantage of sight as well as carry any scent potentially over any hostile pooches. As I use my legs to push myself higher up the branches till I find a thick, strong branch to support my weight I look around to still find nothing going on. Without any action other than the Zubats flying around, I figured leaning back into the tree would be a nice relaxing way to wait for the action.

Matt:

The area is devoid of people when you arrive, though not completely abandoned. There's a dumpster behind the Pokemon Center and something—possible several somethings—is digging around in it. Some of the Murkrow from earlier have perched around the building and are pecking at the ground around the dumpster. But the area is free of other humans for the time being.

The minutes tick by and it remains empty; a few trainers wander in from the wilderness wearing the weary look of people who have been battling recently and one or two even wander past in the opposite direction, headed out. Nurse Joy brings out trash at one point (you're able to glimpse a Rattata tail and pair of bright blue eyes inside the dumpster) but no one is hanging around suspiciously...

..until about fifteen minutes to ten. And then you almost don't see them arrive; whoever it is is somewhat short and slight, but moving with confidence and quiet. They're wearing a form-concealing cloak—some dark color (it's long past the point where you have enough natural light to say more than that for sure, and they're careful to stay in shadow) and utterly unremarkable. They act as though they have every right to be there and start cleaning their nails with a pocket knife. Occasionally you see them look up and glance around; fortunately the darkness seems to be working in your favor for now as they don't seem to see you.

No one else arrives. Mina should be here soon...

((Any last minute preparations?))

----------------

Mina:

Mina meanwhile was making preparations for her part of the meeting.

She put the room lights out almost immediately to discourage the Nurse checking in on her and did most of it in the dark, using the screen of her Pokedex and ambient light from outside to see. She made sure the window screen was loose and the window was open; this plan required her to get out and back in, and if that couldn't happen nothing else would matter. She took the oversized, starry cloak out and hid it under the pillow so she could grab it once she was ready but it wouldn't be immediately obvious if someone walked in while she was getting ready.

She checked and double-checked her remaining Pokemon to make sure all was in order there and picked out some of her healing supplies in case it came to a fight. The rest of her gear she left in the room; spare clothes going under the sheets to make a hopefully-Mina-shaped dummy and the rest staying in her pack. She was in no mood to be robbed again if this went south.

She gave Mark's Kirlia the same instructions she'd given Natu ('Wait here and keep an eye out; if someone comes in, Teleport me back to the room no matter what, otherwise I'm coming back in the window.') She considered whether she ought to give the creature more instructions than that, or at least something to keep her occupied (Would it be appropriate to give her a toy?), but the Psychic type had an attitude to rival that of Matt's new Taillow and Mina wasn't willing to push her luck there.

She locked the door last; Nurse Joy had a key but the delay would hopefully give Kirlia the few seconds she needed to Teleport out, grab Mina and Teleport back in.

Finally Mina put on the cloak, and checked her Pokedex for messages from Matt or Mark one last time before heading out the window.

Matt and Mina:

A moment or so later Matt sees another figure in a cloak—this one a midnight blue and speckled with sequins like stars. It also appears to be too large for the person wearing it, as it drags on the ground and the hood goes far enough over the wearer's face that it's probably obscuring their vision.

Mina, wearing the cloak, is in fact having difficulty seeing more than a few paces in front of her. She takes slow, careful steps and makes sure to keep a hand or elbow on the building wall as a guide. She hopes very fervently that Matt is nearby because she can't see him either way.

She also can't see her target until she is almost on top of them.

"I'm waiting for somebody" a voice in front of her says snidely, "so if you aren't that somebody you can get lost."

Mina stops. The voice had sounded slightly different over the phone, but she thinks she recognizes it—and how many people could be wearing heavy cloaks on hot nights at the exact pre-arranged meeting time and place anyway?

"Are—are you th' one ah talked to over the phone?" At the last second Mina remembers to make her voice gruff and rough-sounding.

Matt, up in his tree, is thus made aware that the star-spangled cloak is Mina if he hadn't figured it out already.

Well this has gotten interesting. I bemusedly thought to myself. I whisper into a pokeball hoping the one whom calls it home will hear as I silently release him as invisibly as I can. "Come out and conceal yourself Gastly, stay close by and ready for trouble." As I conceal the ball within my clothes I pray that nobody hears the soft *CLICK!* and potential flash as Gastly pops out floating near my head. With a wink it vanishes out of sight. Guess all we can do is simply monitor the situation and hope nothing terrible happens to Mina, I'm sure she'll let me know if something ends up amiss.

Matt and Mina:

"I might be," the figure responds. "You got the cash?"

Matt releases his Gastly; the light and sound from the Pokeball opening is nicely muffled by Matt's clothes. ((Good call there; I've had other players forget there's a flash involved and be unpleasantly surprised when the bad guys instantly notice them... )) The figure in the nondescript cloak looks nervous for a second, fingering something inside the cloak, but then the Murkrow start squabbling and what little disturbance there was seems to be written off.

Mina hadn't actually brought her money. So rather than reach for money she didn't have on her, she fires back. "You got th' goods?"

The fence grins, and even in the dark Mina can make out a missing tooth. "I got the goods."

Something is rattling around in the dumpster; Mina tries to ignore it. "Show me."

The fence holds out the edge of the cloak enough to show three Pokeballs—two of the traditional type, and a third that might be a variant of some kind; it's too dark to see for certain.

Mina figures that the presence of any stolen Pokemon is probably enough to put the fence behind bars, so it doesn't look like this meeting was a waste regardless. But she still had hope they could get the Pooochyena back specifically. So she tries to goad the fence into calling whatever-they-were out. "I want to see. I'm not buying a Pokeball; I want to see what's inside." Something is growling in the dumpster now; Mina edges forward regardless, trying to reach Pikachu's Pokeball under her cloak without being obvious.

"Show me the cash, and I'll show you the merchandise."

Or, maybe she should just stall for time; if she can keep the fence arguing for fifteen minutes there would be just that little bit of extra backup... "You first."

The fence sounds annoyed. "Look, kid, I got places to be, do you have money, or—"

And then something leaps out of the dumpster and straight for Mina's face.

From Matt's vantage point, he can see the something is smallish and mostly pale—probably about knee-height on a human, with darker streaks on its body. The fence is backing up, away from Mina and the Pokemon.

Hopefully the guy will buy the complete bluff, but to be on the safe side I pull out a wad of money and flip through the bills while eye balling the man.

Mina had just barely enough time to flinch aside and avoid a face full of claws. The Pokemon landed on the ground with a light thud and Mina could dimly see it was a Linoone.

Oh, smooth! Mina wished she could congratulate Matt for the quick thinking; but with the fence standing there that was impossible. She made a note to do it later and called out Sandshrew.

The fence was largely ignoring Mina and her scuffle in favor of the man who had suddenly appeared from the opposite direction, but the cash being waved so casually about seemed to put them at ease. The fence makes a lopsided grin (prominently displaying the missing tooth). "Heh, you must be the breeder 'friend.' Smart move using the patsy. Are you really a breeder or are you...?" The fence looks like he (she?) is going to continue but apparently thinks better of it. "...Eh, none of my business, as long as you got cash for the merchandise."

The fence holds out the cloak so Matt can see three Pokeballs. Two are of the normal, red-and-white variety; one is shiny and brand new or nearly, the other is marked by big, sloppy uppercase letters Matt can't quite read. The third appears to be some kind of variant as the top half is heavily flecked with blue.

"This is what I got. What do you want to see?"

"I want to see the Poochyena that we agreed upon." I say with a scowling glare at the man. "And yes, I am a breeder, if you try and screw me over you may end up regretting it. I'm taking a big risk here after all in trusting you to have it since they're so darn rare in this region. Obtaining one was hard enough, not knowing the gender of one you possibly possess is a huge gamble, especially considering the source may have.... questionable merchandise." I say this last part with a smirk as though to imply I may know something he/she doesn't. "But like ya said, it's none of MY business so long as YOU have THE merchandise."

I glanced over in Mina's direction, hopefully she'd have time to see the Poochyena and declare if it's the stolen boys' or not. With Gastly out of sight and unknown to the Fence, it should be an easy sneak attack to have Gastly use Hypnosis on him and knock him out without a scuffle. And hopefully a scuffle will be the least of our worries, let alone get caught by Officer Jenny or possibly worse people, like Bandra.

"Poochyena?" The fence seems to be taken aback. "Your fall girl didn't say anything about a Poochyena, she said you wanted dog Pokemon and that's what I brought. Try this instead."

And the fence pulls out the ball with scribbly letters on it and calls out the contents.

The Pokemon that appears might have been a Poochyena at one point, but not anymore. The Mightyena stands uncertainly, fur raised up in places and slicked down in others, plainly terrified. Atypically for the breed, the black patch on its back encircles its neck as well, and there's a light gray star mostly-centered on its chest. Even in the dark it's obvious it hasn't been groomed in a long while. Around its neck is a collar of a bright cheery...is that pink?...with a dangling heart-shaped tag speaking of love and affection completely out of keeping with its current condition. But the collar is clearly too tight; folds of skin and fur bunch up around the edges, it seems it hasn't been removed or adjusted since the creature evolved.

"You'd have to go all the way to Hillsbreak to find one in the wild," The fence tells you, playing up the 'rare, valuable' angle. "But I'll let it go for say...5,000 PD."

In the background, you notice Mina battling the Linoone that leaped out of the dumpster with her Sandshrew. ((Rolls)) She appears to be holding her own for the moment, but it may be a few minutes before you can grab her attention.

((Mina: ))

What did I do to get this thing so mad at me??? Mina wondered. The Normal type appeared to be out for blood, and her blood specifically; normally wild Pokemon were perfectly content to battle whatever she threw out, but Sandshrew was having to actively get in the way to keep her trainer from being hit. The two Pokemon traded a couple solid hits before the Linoone spun back around to come at Mina again, hissing.

Gastly fades into sight right in front of the fence, eyes emitting hypnotic waves. The fence exclaims in surprise but crumples halfway through and falls in a heap on the ground, snoozing lightly. The Pokeball rolls out of her (his?) hand into a patch of light from the Pokemon Center and you can finally get a good look at the writing: in sloppy capitals, it reads 'SCRUFFY.' The Mightyena in question whimpers a little bit and crouches down, trying to make itself appear small.

Mina manages to take her attention off the wild Linoone long enough to notice this. "Good work!" And to the wild Pokemon attacking her: "And you can go away now."

Now that the situation isn't so tense Mina calls out her Pidgey to help chase off the Linoone. Seeing itself outnumbered, the Normal types flees, hissing angrily. Mina pauses on seeing it run through the Center lights, but shakes her head and lowers the hood on her oversized cloak.

"Glad that's over. What have we got?"

Speaking of him... Bellsprout, come out and use Vine Whip to bind their hands and feet together so that they can't escape if they happen to wake up."

I cross my arms across my chest after releasing Bellsprout and watching him go to work on the motionless figure. The Mightyena clearly wasn't with its owner judging by the terrified expression it had as well as it's un-kept fur. The poor thing looked so malnourished that you could nearly see its ribcage through its once shiny fur coat. I couldn't help wonder how many other pokemon suffered at the hands of this individual, a scowl crept across my face and I held back kicking the person in the stomach. I didn't want any passerby's to notice someone appearing to be mugged or robbed. Meanwhile, I'll wait for Mina as she seems deep in thought as to what our next course of action should be.

"We have one Mightyena named "SCRUFFY" and other potential stolen pokemon here."

Mina perked up visibly at the name. "That's who we were looking for!"

"Now, would you care to fetch an officer to get all wrongs' made right?"

"He's already on his way," Mina responded, feeling pleased. That went a lot easier than expected. "Mark got in contact with the Ranger beforehand, just in case something went wrong. He should be along in a few more minutes."

While Matt's Bellsprout dealt with the fence, Mina knelt down just out of arm's reach of the Mightyena in an attempt to look less threatening.

"Hey, little guy," Mina slowly and very cautiously held out a hand for the Dark type to sniff, aware that she was taking a risk— the poor thing was frightened enough it might bite her, just out of fear. Yet again she was regretting leaving most of her things in her room—she still had some Poffin she could have given it if she'd had it on her. "Your trainer sent us to come get you."

The Mightyena looked—hopeful was the only word that sprang to mind. It tentatively licked Mina's hand. Seeing that the Pokemon was reassured, Mina took the opportunity to scan it.

Raises an eyebrow.
"Shadowed? What's that? Also if this is the pokemon you were looking for it seems as though we're a little late on saving it as it once was. I guess it's better late than never.""
I couldn't help but wonder if this shadowing is a result of old, yet failed, Team Rocket experiments from long ago. I dismissed the notion from my head. What they worked on was more of a pokemon steroid type of food product that would increase the consumer's stats at the cost of it's increased aggressive temperment, making them nearly impossible to handle unless Rage was all they knew. I recalled a Machoke that was used as a test subject that destroyed half a city block in Saffron City before the local guilds succeeded in stopping its rampage. Of course nobody knew what caused it to go in a frenzy like that, however the number of trainers, innocents, and pokemon alike that were injured were quite an astronomical amount. Sabrina and her psychic's nearly couldn't beat it WITH their type advantage. Twas a good thing Giovanni dismissed further tampering with the drug. I wasn't overly fond of the idea of being made to lead the team of scientist's in the project in the first place, but with threats of harm to befall those close to you, what's a person to do?! If only I had been stronger back then and had the courage to do the RIGHT thing like this girl does. I have to admit her courage is fairly inspiring. Noticing how she had the Mightyena licking her hand reminded me of Gastly, who was obviously watching and must have been thinking that her hand must be tasty or something as it was closing in to take a lick as well.
Whoa, WHOA there! No, no, NO lick-ing of the allies! We don't want to go paralyzing our friends now, do we Bellsprout? With a flick of Gastly's ball I summon him back an instant before his tounge touches her hand unknowingly. I see a sad looking sort of glare as he disappears in a flash.
Smiling"Well, all's well that ends well!

It had been a long, long while. But Mark had eventually figured out a solution to his "problem."

He actually felt a little stupid that it took him so long to realize exactly what it was that the Magnamite had been holding him with. Seeing as the vast majority of his arm was built of hard plastics and shaped black "tar" (for the solar panels), the only metals within the entire thing were non-magnetic pieces of copper and tin, specifically so he could keep the arm on without setting off metal detectors.

So what could the electric/ steel type be holding onto? And that's when mark smacked his forehead (with the arm that could actually function), set his journal down, and stopped using the magnemite as a drawing surface. Looking to the pokemon's owner, he would say, "S-So, uh, a magnetic electric type has quite a bit of control over power lines, right?" He would say, reaching under his arm and fiddling around with a few tabs there, systematically removing one battery after another and putting them in his pocket. Well, at least once he'd gotten a glove to protect him from the static crackling along the prosthetic limb. And it would seem that the young man's guess was correct as, after the last battery was out, his arm flopped down. Completely powerless, and no longer bound to the electric type. Throwing up his only working arm and cheering, Mark would use his mouth to remove the glove and, after giving the magnemite a disgruntled glare, he would be off!

Hopefully, things wouldn't have gotten too out-of-hand with the fence, since it would take him a while to get there... and his arm would be OoC until he could properly replace each of the five power cells properly. He did not relish the thought of throwing out pokeballs on his belt with only one free hand to himself...

Yeah in the 18th century, two inventions suggested a method of measurement. One won and the other stayed in America.
