Now, alright Pokedex, how far am I from the nearest pokecenter? Surely it's got a map built in, least i hope it does.... Darn gadgets anyway..."

Matt:

Your badly blanking memory is foiled by the Pokedex, as you find the map in it without issue. After a moment of study you realize you're about eight miles from Ceris ((the town you just left, to the northeast)), nine miles from a settlement the 'dex says is called Plainshaven ((southwest)) and ten from a city called Coastmarch ((southeast)). You also recall that the city of Tidepath is a little farther east than that, as it had been the intended port-of-call for your doomed cruise ship, but you remember from one of the brochures that it's called TIDEpath due to the fact that traffic to the city from the mainland is controlled by the tides—depending on when you reach the roads, they may be underwater.

After watching the battle for a bit, Jack decided to leave the area before it's finished. Hoping to be able to find his new friends afterwards, he went for the mart. Some more potions and pokeballs would be nice to have.

"B-but, can't say if he would trade for it or not. So probably better s-safe than sorry, if there isn't anything you want." For his part, Mark was curious as to what the Life Orb would do... but he felt like he'd gotten too much as it was.

Matt:

((For a short run, don't worry about it—if you start running everywhere you go we'll worry about it then. Of course, it's rather difficult to sneak when you're running, so...))

You take off at a steady jog for Plainshaven, after briefly fording the river and getting your shoes very wet. The route here is rocky and rough thanks to the nearby mountains, and seems to be getting even more barren than it had been around Ceris as you go further south. Which means it comes as something of a shock when a human voice calls out:

"Hey! You there!"

The pair spots you just a moment before you spot them; a man and a woman—either late teens or early twenties—in nearly identical uniforms except the woman has her shirt knotted up over her stomach. Both have a cloth tied over their faces, covering their features below the hostile eyes, and both have a spiky purple 'B' emblazoned on their shirts. The man has a Pokeball in one hand and looks about to use it.

...hadn't Mina said the area south of town was Bandra controlled?

----------------

Jack:

You head over to the Mart; it's had a few days to recover from the attack by Bandra, and it seems prices are back to normal:

Potion – 300 PD
Super Potion – 700 PD
Antidote – 100 PD
Paralyze Heal – 200 PD
Burn Heal – 250 PD
Full Heal – 600 PD
Repel – 350 PD
Pokeball – 200 PD
Great Ball – 600 PD
Glitter Ball – 600 PD
Glamour Ball – 1200 PD

Beads (Red, Orange, or Yellow) – 35 PD – Contest Accessory. A string of colorful beads.
Smoke (Red, Orange, or Yellow) – 35 PD – Contest Accessory. A packet of pellets that give off colored smoke when wet. Comes with a little plastic dispenser that can be hung off a Pokemon.
Claw (Red, Orange, or Yellow) – 35 PD – Contest Accessory. A set of costume claws with non-toxic adhesive to hold them in place.
Cord (Red, Orange, or Yellow) – 35 PD – Contest Accessory. A finely braided cord.
Fluff (Red, Orange, or Yellow) – 35 PD – Contest Accessory. A wad of cotton-like fluff and a tube of non-toxic adhesive.

----------------

Mark and Mina:

"Yes...you're right." Probably best not to be trying to guess the reaction of someone who was very nearly a complete stranger and end up weighing herself down with a lot of junk she couldn't use. Mina handed the Ranger her Bounty Form. "I'll just take cash in that case."

(( -1 Bounty Claim Form
+7,000 PD (8,550 total)))

Mina put away her money (making a note to herself to buy more Pokeballs later) before turning to the Ranger. And speaking of Pokeballs...

"What is 'scraped' by the way? You keep mentioning it." Mina was fairly sure it had nothing to do with physical scraping; Pokeballs were made to be reasonably durable, and anyway the presence or absence of paint should have no effect on their ability to function.

The Ranger's expression was very serious. "'Scraping' or 'wiping' is what we call it when a Pokeball has had its identification information erased—the time of capture, the trainer who captured it, the trainer who owns it. Most organized crime rings have some way of doing it—they wouldn't be around for long if every Pokemon they took was immediately flagged as belonging to someone else as soon as their customers took it to a Pokemon Center, and the Nurse Joys are trained to look for that. Some of the more advanced crime syndicates can even overwrite it with new information, but that's rare—Silph Co. and Devon Corporation both keep a tight lock on their software, just for that reason. And there are signs left on the ball either way—my Styler has software installed to detect those signs." Ranger Wain seemed to consider something for a moment before adding, "If you two are going to be making a habit of this, I can download the App onto your Pokedexes."

So these must be Bandra team members. Wonder what they're doing way out here in the wilderness.

He would mumble, a bit of a flush on his face as he looked at the floor awkwardly. "Um, we've h-had a few run-ins with Bandra, s-so if we manage to free some of the pokemon they stole... could be nice to know who to return them to."

Matt:

Both Bandra trainers are wearing identical smirks. "Sure, sure, hand over your Pokemon and you can be right on your way!" says the man.

The male trainer calls out a Sandshrew; the woman calls out a Mankey.

Mankey: 52/52

Sandshrew: 56/56

----------------

Mark and Mina:

"Oh—me too please," Mina responded, pulling out her Pokedex and handing it over.

The Ranger took both Pokedexes, pulled out a connecting cable and plugged them in to his Styler one by one as he spoke. "Since I expect you're going to be doing it anyway, keep an eye out for stolen chaff Pokemon."

"'Chaff' Pokemon?" Mina asked, bewildered.

Viola chimed in over the Ranger's Styler. "Jon, they're kids. They're not Rangers. Stop using Ranger slang!"

"Right," Ranger Wain agreed, looking briefly embarrassed. "Elder Elren already knew...never mind." He coughed briefly, then continued. "'Chaff' Pokemon – they're Pokemon that aren't valuable in and of themselves, but are stolen because they're taken alongside Pokemon that are. Like the boy's Poochyena."

Mina thought she understood. The average ten-year-old would get their Cyndaquil or their Totodile for a starter and then go out and catch lots of Pidgey, Rattata, Caterpie—and the former were rare, but the latter were not, and the average Pokemon thief wasn't likely to stop and check stolen Pokeballs to see which contained which.

"Usually, they'll end up abandoned in the wilderness, or used for bait in illegal fighting rings. Sometimes they go worse places." The Ranger's expression was very grim. "Lately, Bandra has been funneling a lot of them up into the Shatterhigh Mountains, and we're not sure why."

"Sure, sure, hand over your Pokemon and you can be right on your way!"
A fighting type and a ground type huh? Shame Weepinbell and Poliwag beat the snot out of each other, they'd have made short work of at least one of these two. As I glance the two Bandra goons over I wonder how many other pokeballs they have on them. I suppose they could both be carrying 6 each which would be a whole heap of trouble for me since I was short on money and healing items. Doesn't seem I have any choice though.
Raising my eyebrow and moving slowly to reach for my pokeballs that contain Gastly and Taillow,"Why certainly, whatever you say, wouldn't want you two to get rough with me after all,"I say before whipping two pokeballs back out for a surprise attack before the two Bandra goons can react.(hopefully!)Man I sure hope Taillow and Gastly could hear everything that was going on in their balls.
"Taillow, Wing attack that Mankey, Gastly, Lick it!"

The Bandra trainers don't seem to have taken pains to hide their own Pokeballs; a glance reveals that they have two Pokemon each ((that's including the ones already out)).

Taillow uses Wing Attack!
It's super effective!
Mankey is hit for 54 damage!
Mankey faints!

Gastly looks faintly disappointed that his target is already unconscious thanks to the newcomer to your party. He gives the unconscious Mankey a little lick anyway, though of course it makes no difference.

Sandshrew uses Sand Attack!
Taillow's Accuracy falls!
Gastly's Accuracy falls!

The woman looks pouty; she recalls the Mankey and sends out a Pokemon rather like a wilted red Butterfree, which the Pokedex identifies as a Wispaferyn.

Gastly: 48/48 (Accuracy down 1 level)
Taillow: 54/54 (Accuracy down 1 level)

Mankey: 0/52
Wispaferyn: 62/62

Sandshrew: 56/56

Wispaferyn is hit for 6 damage!
Wispaferyn is Paralyzed!
It may not be able to attack!

Sandshrew uses Defense Curl!
Sandshrew's Defense rises!

I'm pretty sure that Sandshrew won't be able to do much for damage against Gastly, if any, but if it starts smacking Taillow, it may not be good. Situation could be worse though, just need to keep this as a  2 on 1 scenerio, beat these punks, and then bail out... Maybe see what THEY have for valuables before I leave though.

Taillow uses Peck!

Wispaferyn is hit for 27 damage!

It's Gastly's turn to miss entirely; the beam sends a spray of dirt into the air right next to the woman's foot. "Watch it!"

"Yeah, we're supposed to be the bad guys!" And the man directs his Sandshrew to send some dirt back at you.

Sandshrew uses Sand Attack!
Taillow's Accuracy falls!
Gastly's Accuracy falls!

The Wispaferyn spasms so badly it almost looks like it won't be able to attack again, but its very real danger seems to push it to desperation and it manages to force an attack through the paralysis.

Giving Mina a look, and then a yawn, Mark would say, "Well... looks like we have something t-to look into next." Bandra activity was always going to be high on the priorities list, and if these mountains were close by... "W-well thank you ranger Rick, I suppose we'll be seeing you around! ... Oh, and we'll try to find that other guy. You know... so that he can get his stuff too." Yup, that was fair enough, and (being nervous and tired as he was) Mark would make his hasty escape from there, not thinking to ask more about the situation in the Shatterhigh Mountains, and on a quest to find as much caffeine as he could, so at to apply it to his face (preferably the mouth, but anywhere worked).
