Matt:

You eventually sort out your opponent; a Coordinator of middling height and deep green hair, whose dangling earrings bring out golden-yellow eyes. She has three Pokeballs on a thick bracelet on her wrist and keeps blowing a stray hair out of her eyes.

((How many Pokemon do you want for this fight? You can do up to three.))

----------------

Jack (and Mark if he comes with):

It seems the Contest Hall is taking this Karaoke thing seriously; seating is already set up, someone put up tables with inexpensive, but brightly-colored tablecloths along one side, and a few cheerful-looking individuals are setting out plastic silverware, warming trays, cups—you even see someone struggling with various implements trying to set up and fill the punch bowl. A few older individuals are up on ladders, tweaking speakers and lighting, and near the back you can see a couple harried crew members with heaps of sodden costumes, looking for something. Elder Rashel is off to one side, overseeing everything.

"Greetings and salutations miss, 3 on 3 okay with yourself?" I ask as politely as I can.
Hmmm, I wonder if her green hair signifies that she uses grass pokemon? Maybe bugs? No matter, I believe Taillow, Poliwag, and Gastly should be able to manage just fine. I hope! I should have payed closer attention to what the natives were using for pokemon around here. Though that hardly tells anything.

You opponent--she introduced herself as Rita--nods and calls out her first Pokemon: a Pompuff like the one you saw earlier, but whose fur is tinted red in places. Said fur gleams with health and good grooming.

"Alright Taillow, Double Team!" I say while checking the pokedex to see what this Pompuff creature is. It looks pretty normal, but appearances can be deceiving. I hope by starting out with some evasive boosting it'll buy time to figure out a battle strategy to win this thing.

Matt:

Your Pokedex confirms the puppy Pokemon is a Normal type ((Level 20, with some stat boosts from Poffin)). The 'dex gives you a little blurb explaining the color difference: apparently Pompuff is like Tyrogue or Eevee in that it can evolve into more than one species, and that species is determined by which Contest stat ((Cool, Smart, or both)) has reached its maximum level.

Pompuff uses Fluff Up!
But nothing happens!

Taillow uses Double Team!

Well that first round didn't really show off anything overly thrilling. Obviously faster, not sure what effect Fluff Up will have once actual combat gets under way... Hmmm...

"Alright Taillow, Peck'em!"

I began to wonder what sort of perks these contests give certain pokemon, especially this new, unknown oddity. I suppose I should be fortunate this pokemon is 'cool' and not 'smart', else it may have used some effective attack while Taillow darted about.

"Good job Taillow, now lets see.... How about Wing Attack? Let's see how that goes."

I began to wonder to myself, if there was certain ways to train pokemon in order to cause moves to do more damage with various natural effects.... like gravity for starters. One would figure that if a flying type used an attack that would cause it's forward momentum to take it upwards, that an aerial strike would cause more damage than a regular attack. Though I suppose the opposite would be true too, causing a flying pokemon to become paralyzed, fall asleep, or to crash and take fall damage in the end might KO them as they tend to be far frailer than most other normal types. I decided that I'd have to try out some mixtures of moves at a later time to see what sort of combo's I can come up with. Of course, I could always ask the ever useful pokedex. Research is always a beneficial thing after all.

Mark would consider Jack's question for a few seconds, and then say, "Well now, types I-I want? Hmm... Well my party is currently Kirlia, Lapras, Skarmory, Corphish, Swellow and..." Hesitating a bit, no longer having Ariados as part of his party, Mark would take out his pokedex to look up the name of his newly caught pokemon, "Um... Chevlain. So I guess I'm looking for a-anything but a flying, ice or water type at this point!" He would say, scratching a bit nervously at the back of his head and chuckling.

((At the event))

Arriving, Mark would bid Jack farewell for the moment, beeline towards the punch bowl, and then just wait for Mina to come in. Like a massive nerd.

Mina:

Once she was done switching Pokemon Mina headed over to the Mart. The boys looked liked they'd been and gone, but she needed more Pokeballs, so she bought four, plus three Great Balls. She didn't think she would use any of the Contest items on display so she skipped over those. Her stock of healing items was mostly in good shape, but she bought a Full Heal to keep her bases covered--sighing to herself a little at her lack of luck in finding Berries to use instead. She still had some Repel of her own left and didn't need any more...she added two Super Potions to the pile in case the Sitrus Berries she was growing weren't enough.

That had eaten into her funds sufficiently to make her nervous, so Mina finished her shopping and headed over to the Contest Hall to catch up with the boys.

((-4600 PD -> 3950 remaining

+1 Full Heal

Mark:

((I'll swap Ariados into Box Storage but remember Chevalin is in the Nurse's care until the stat damage is healed.))

((At the party: ))

As you make it to the punch bowl, you realize you're not the only one there: a girl with frizzy blonde hair is eyeing the liquid inside like a tricky math problem. She seems to be in the process of filling it; there are empty bottles of sweetened ginger ale next to it, a few unopened tubes of frozen Berry concentrate by her elbow and in her hands are an ice cream scoop and a half-empty container of sherbet. (The remaining half is floating in the punch-in-progress in lieu of ice.) At first it seems she doesn't notice you, until she asks out of the blue:

"Do you think a sweet punch would be better for a Karaoke party or a dry punch? Or maybe a spicy punch?"

Egads! I wasn't expecting an electric type... That more than takes care of two of my pokemon easily... What to do, what to do... I could really put good use of a fire type, but it seems I'm doomed to fail here. Do I go down fighting? Or play it safe and concede? Taillow fought well, I'm not really losing out on anything, especially potential injuries to my pokemon making them fight so hard. Sighing
"Taillow, return, Gastly I choose you! And if you've a chance to attack, Confuse Ray, else when you're able will suffice my friend!"
I try to sound confident but I can sense my voice waver, if only for a second. My opponent seems to smirk at me, almost mockingly as she gives her battle command with a utmost steely tone, as if confirming her come from behind victory was already guaranteed.

(Had I known that I'd of left Gastly out... god its SO squishy...)

"Hang in there Gastly, put it to sleep with Hypnosis, maybe you can beat it up safer that way..."

I hoped I sounded confident, things were going south in a hurry though. I had figured Gastly might prove useful. Probably would have faired better in that first matchup. Though I believe that Pompuff was using dark type moves. Seems the good ole ghost types ain't as strong as I remembered.
Also, it's a shame he hasn't learned Dream Eater, would be useful to heal him back up without using items all the time. Poor little guy will never level being so weak. Would have almost been better to raise up a Magikarp! But hindsight is 20/20, not that I'd of ever found out they evolve into those terrifying monstrosities without the help of Team Rocket's many members and the brilliant scientists I worked with.
