His expression turns as grim as you've yet seen it.

"We recently suffered a serious loss; Elder Elren, our leader, was murdered during the defense of Ternai. The Starlight Squad is now split; roughly half our forces sided with Sesh, the other half are with me here. We can't survive against Bandra as we are; we were outmatched to begin with, and now we aren't even organized enough to manage coordinated guerilla attacks on their forces.

The difficulty is that Sesh claims I murdered Elren, and many of the Squad here believe he did it. To reunite both halves into a usable whole again, I need to be able to prove my innocence, or better still, gain irrefutable evidence of the true culprit." You note he doesn't come out and accuse Sesh directly. "But even simply proving beyond doubt I was not to blame may be enough to seal the rift in the Squad. And it must be done quickly; every day that passes, Bandra grows in strength and the Squad trickles further apart."

She's an ice and dragon type, if that helps you c-choose who you want to send out." Mark would say once they had arrived, holding Chevlain's ball in his hand and waiting for Jack to make his decision. Noticing that she had followed, Mark would look at Mina and say, "O-Oh, and I'm not sure if anything you had was shadowed... but... if you wanted to help, I-I wouldn't say no."

"O-Oh, and I'm not sure if anything you had was shadowed... but... if you wanted to help, I-I wouldn't say no."

Mina shook her head 'no.' "No, but Aidrelas has an attack that can instantly Shadow Pokemon en masse, so I figure I'd better help work out our strategy now." Had she mentioned that before? Mina couldn't remember. Oh well, she'd mentioned it now.

"Out of curiosity, would having the shadowed pokemon battle objects within the room count as battling? Like, empty crates or whatever?"

Mina looked around expecting a response only to realize the nurse had taken off. "I have no idea. We could try it if you want."

Blinking "Murdered you say? How? In the defense of something, sounds more as though they died whilest defending from the assailants, whom I assume were Bandra. Now implying that it was an inside job would only lead me to believe that perhaps a member of Bandra infiltrated your group. And if that's the case you may have a bigger problem then just losing the Squad." My eyes narrowed at the thought. Not that it'd be all that far fetched, but spies always seemed to be a thing. For good or evil. But with a psychic type like a Kadabra, wouldn't it be able to figure out if there WAS a snitch in the squad?

"Not so. Elren was injured before the attack on Ternai. His injuries meant he was not mobile, and Bandra hadn't yet overrun the Pokemon Center before we found him dead." His expression looks pained. "Someone had poisoned his bandages. And there were only a small number of us who had close enough access to him to perform sabotage of that kind. Sesh and I were both naturally on hand in that timeframe."

"Now implying that it was an inside job would only lead me to believe that perhaps a member of Bandra infiltrated your group. And if that's the case you may have a bigger problem then just losing the Squad."

"Then you understand the difficulty we face."

Mark, Jack, Mina:

Chevalin materializes and instantly tenses up; fur fluffed up threateningly where it isn't marred by old scars and not-completely-healed injuries.

Mina inhales sharply, obviously surprised. "Mark, why didn't you leave her with the nurse?"

Her attention briefly caught by the sound, Chevalin turns, lowers her head threateningly and growls; a sound like distant wind over tumbled stone.

Mark would blink upon seeing the continued condition of Chevlain, obviously surprised himself, and immediately recall her, saying, "I-I thought I told the nurse to keep her in intensive care until she was fully healed... I'll go back and make sure that's clear this time." And with that, the boy turned around and went back to the nurse, leaving Jack and Mina there to talk or practice de-shadowing, as they would.

Talking directly to Chevlain's pokeball, Mark would tell her, "I'm sorry, I didn't know you weren't ready. A-And I'm not going to push you while you're like this." Hesitating before entering the main lobby, he would add, "I'm not like your last master."

Going to the nurse, he would set the pokeball on the counter and say, "U-Um... Sorry I didn't notice before, but Chevlain isn't fully healed yet. Can I leave her with you until she's completely recovered?"

With the appearance of a new pokemon, and the fact that it was so hostile right from the start, Jack totally forgot to check it out on his pokedex. Maybe he would look it up later.

"Well, that was... Well, I don't know. Time to give this de-shadow thing a try," Mark says, sending out Rattata into the room. "Okay, quick attack that wall!"

Mark:

"Of course!" Nurse Joy takes Chevalin's Pokeball with a smile.

((Chevalin is now unavailable for swapping out until her stat damage is gone.))

----------------

Jack, Mina:

((Yep, just a d100.))

Jack's Rattata looked around. Mina got a sinking feeling as the Pokemon twitched, seemingly not finding whatever she was looking for, and turned around. And tensed.

And leapt.

"MOVE!" Mina shoved Jack hard just before the Shadowed Rattata tried to chomp down on his leg and threw out a Pokemon at random.

Out came Pidgey. He looked around at the enclosing space a little nervously before focusing on the splotchy dark form of the Shadow Pokemon.

Pidgey: 67/67

Rattata: 38/38 (Shadowed: 100%)

"The Squad has been split in half," he reminds gently. "If we trusted one another well enough to come together as a group, we wouldn't be in the straits we are now. And as I said, there were only a handful of people who had such close access to Elren. Myself and Sesh were both among them, and most of the rest were killed or vanished. The true perpetrator may not even be among us any longer...I only need to prove it wasn't me."

Which leads to a possibility that you are, in all due circumstance, not innocent and possibly did take out the elder. But since you're wanting to prove your innocence, that wouldn't quite make sense unless you were trying to stay in the Squad for future sabotage. Hmmmm.... I'm somewhat unsure how I'd be able to help in this situation.... If there were evidence to prove your innocence lost some where, perhaps I could assist in finding it to get to the bottom of this mystery?"

Forgot recoil damage from Shadow Rush

Jack, Mina (and then Mark):

"Sand Attack!"

Pidgey uses Sand Attack!
Rattata's Accuracy falls!

Rattata uses Shadow Rush!
Pidgey is hit for 15 damage!
Rattata takes 3 recoil damage!

Rattata's Shadow Gauge falls 2%!

Mark arrives just in time to see Pidgey thrown backward. Jack's Rattata regains her feet and, seeing the open door, prepares to bolt.

"Stop her!" Mina yells.

Pidgey: 52/67

Rattata: 35/38 (Accuracy down 1 level, Shadowed: 98%)

----------------

Mark:

As you approach you can hear the sounds of combat; presumably the 'attack boxes' plan didn't work. Upon entering, you see Mina's Pidgey take a solid – though thankfully not debilitating – hit. But Jack's Rattata hears the door open and notices the new exit almost immediately.

"Stop her!" Mina yells.

----------------

Matt:

He smiles; it's a polite smile.

"If I knew of a simple way to do it, I would have done it myself. ((If it were easy there would be no need for the PCs! )) Unfortunately trust is not a simple thing. And an alibi would be impossible – I was close to Elder Elren before his death, as was Sesh, as were a handful of others, as I said. Trying to prove I was somewhere else when I wasn't would be futile, I think. And I want to prove my innocence because I am – but please let me know if you find out otherwise." You're reasonably certain that under the layer of distance and serenity that was supposed to be a joke. And then he becomes distantly serious again. "Elren was killed in Ternai Town, which is still under Bandra control; any physical evidence would be there. If you mean to help, then for your sake I hope you can find something without traveling there, but if you must go, don't go alone. Whatever you find would need to be concrete – a message from Bandra naming the assassin, a witness, an outright confession, something of that nature."

((You've got a reasonable amount of leeway in how you want to go with looking for evidence, just be advised it probably isn't going to be something you'll be finishing in an afternoon. This is intended to be a longer-term quest than that.))

Blinking at the sight of a small, angry deathrat staring at him, Mark would do the logical thing that would spring to the mind of any trainer. And slam the door shut. And then immediately throw out his biggest, heaviest pokemon, in this case Lapras, right in front of it as a barricade. "Nope!"

Good thing she didn't try and quick attack herself out, Jack thought to himself. "Well, let's return to the idea of you whipping your tail at that Pidgey!" Jack prepared his pokedex to try and identify that last move Rattata made, just in case she does it again.

Forgot recoil damage from Shadow Rush

Mark, Jack, Mina:

"Keep it up, Pidgey!

Pidgey uses Sand Attack!
Rattata's Accuracy falls!

Jack's Rattata lets out a very savage snarl at being thwarted and attacks the living barrier now between her and the door.

Rattata uses Shadow Rush!
Lapras is hit for 10 damage!
Rattata takes 2 recoil damage!

Rattata's Shadow Gauge falls 2%!

Jack's Pokedex spits out a little information: Shadow Rush is an attack only used by Pokemon that have been Shadowed; as with most things Shadow Pokemon related it frequently occurs randomly and is hard to control.

The 'dex also lists its typing as 'Shadow' but there's a note that this isn't considered an elemental typing, as such, merely a reflection of the fact that it can't be used by non-Shadowed Pokemon; it isn't super-effective to or resisted by anything, though Pokemon abilities that protect against certain attack types don't always work against Shadow attacks. ((EX: No one here has a Shedinja, but if someone did Wonder Guard will NOT protect against Shadow moves.))

Lapras: 97/107

Pidgey: 52/67

Rattata: 33/38 (Accuracy down 2 levels, Shadowed: 96%)

----------------

Matt:

You head back to the Pokemon Center.

((Aaand I need to put you on hold until the rest of the party catches up.))
