((Dire portents and warnings))

Getting the general picture at this point, and knowing that Daze was talking about his Aaron now, Mark nods and tells the psychic, "I'll go back tomorrow." He promises, this time with the intention that he would not stop pressing forward until he got his pokemon back.

_________________________________________________

((Group meeting))

Mark looks between the other two, before telling them, "He came to me and told me where my stolen Aaron is. And if we'd gone a bit deeper into the cave we found Bandra exploring, we would have found him... and he told me I need to go back there. Tonight." As for what the others were talking about... "No idea who would be in a brown cloak. But as for the book, Matt has a pretty cursed or something book that he can't open. Maybe that's what he was talking about?"

_________________________________________________

((Wain))

Mark's call changes from warning about an attack, to calling the ranger to tell him the following. "Hello Wain. I've been told that a pokemon that was stolen from me i-is in that cave we caught those grunts at. Can you help me get him back?" From his tone, Mark's question is more a question of whether the ranger wanted to join him rather than asking permission from the adult. After all, Tattersail knew the location, and could easily teleport her master there like she'd chain-teleported all of those grunts to and from the pokemon center.

Mark (with Daze) :

"I'll go back tomorrow."

Daze nods, pats you on the head, and makes his way out.

----------------

Group:

"He came to me and told me where my stolen Aaron is. And if we'd gone a bit deeper into the cave we found Bandra exploring, we would have found him... and he told me I need to go back there. Tonight."

“I’ll come with you,” Mina said. She felt like she’d more-or-less promised to help with that already, and anyway she didn’t like leaving Bandra up there doing whatever-it-was with stolen Pokémon.

"No idea who would be in a brown cloak. But as for the book, Matt has a pretty cursed or something book that he can't open. Maybe that's what he was talking about?"

Mina turned to Matt. “May I see it?”

"A brown cloak? That... sounds kind of familiar... But more importantly, if you're going to save your pokemon, you might need assistance. Would your psychic types be able to teleport us back there ? "

“There’s supposed to be a Bandra Officer up there who can detect Teleport. That said, they didn’t stop us from leaving…” Mina trailed off, not sure what she could add with certainty.

”Also, would it be possible any of those.... squad people.... wear brown cloaks? I can't remember."

Mina shook her head no. The Starlight Squad as a group hadn’t had any sort of uniform, except for a pin specific to members – and that was out of sight more often than not.

”As for this book... I... I don't know what to do with it... Hold onto it for safe keeping I imagine... Yet there's something in Ternai town I almost forgot that I needed to do at some point..."

A voice called from outside the group’s immediate vicinity. “You’re going back to Ternai Town?” Mina recognized Pellana, who was at that moment exiting from the kitchen area clutching a cup of coffee. “Can I help?”

----------------

Mark (on the phone) :

There’s a little bit of muttering on the other side of the phone before the Ranger finally manages, “Let me put you on hold while I check a few things.”

There are a few rounds of automated ‘thank you for contacting the Ranger Union, your call is important to us’ before Ranger Wain reappears on the line.

I can help, but I’ve got an assignment coming up that isn’t going to keep very well. If I come with you I’m going to need your help cleaning that up afterwards.

"But of course, maybe you can figure it out." I say handing the book over to Mina.

At the sound of Pellana's voice, I turn to address her, "It's not so much a 'we' thing, as request of me thing to search for some evidence to prove innocence. If that makes sense."

((Group meeting))

To Mina, Mark says, "I'll see if we can get Wain to join us too. And Mat, Mina?" Rubbing at his prosthetic limb, he mumbles, "T-Thank you." And then Pellena was there, and Mark shut up because oh god that was a gym leader and he did not look proper enough to draw the attention of a gym leader! He should have taken a shower today... and also combed his hair... and also...

To distract himself from the mental screaming, he mumbles to Mina, "W-We might be able to teleport to within a mile? N-Not sure that would help, but it could give us a chance to move so that we don't get pinned down. Or we could just teleport into the middle of the camp and take down e-everyone there immediately before he even gets to respond to feeling us coming? If he's... even... there?"

________________________________________________

((Phone call!))

Feeling a good bit better about their chances now that Wain was willing to join him as well, Mark said, "Alright, yes! Thank you! I'd be happy to help. Whatever it is, y-you can count on me!" It was probably going to be filing paperwork he didn't understand. However, that would absolutely be worth it if he could get his pokemon back.

________________________________________________

((After calling on his cell phone))

Mark would return Chevlain to storage after everything gets sorted out. While he'd love to keep helping un-shadow the dragon type, he needed a more reliable pokemon to work with and her ice typing would not help them out in this fight. So instead, he withdrew Corphish so that he could have another water-type around to deal with Bandra's seeming abundance of ground and rock pokemon, as well as a defensive 'mon for all of those physical attackers.

He also informs Mina that Wain will be joining them.

Group:

"But of course, maybe you can figure it out."

Mina took the book and immediately had a flash of déjà vu. She’d seen it before – or another one just like it – when she and what had been the group at the time had dug it out of the Ruins of Teba. She’d last seen it with Stacey. She hadn’t heard from Stacey in a while…she wondered if this was why…

"I'll see if we can get Wain to join us too. And Mat, Mina? T-Thank you."

Mina was mostly investigating the book, but she was paying enough attention to give Mark an absent hug.

"It's not so much a 'we' thing, as request of me thing to search for some evidence to prove innocence. If that makes sense."

Pellana looked pale but determined. “If you’re going to Ternai Town, you shouldn’t go alone. And you’ll have a hard time finding anyone who knows the city better than I do.”

"W-We might be able to teleport to within a mile? N-Not sure that would help, but it could give us a chance to move so that we don't get pinned down. Or we could just teleport into the middle of the camp and take down e-everyone there immediately before he even gets to respond to feeling us coming? If he's... even... there?"

“I guess either of those might work,” Mina muttered, painfully aware she didn’t have a very strong idea of how the detection worked, or how good Bandra’s communication was.

((Mark’s Chevalin has been swapped for Corphish. Let me know if anything looks amiss.))

Mina gave Mark’s news about the Ranger accompanying them a distracted thumbs up.

----------------

Mark (on the phone) :
"Alright, yes! Thank you! I'd be happy to help. Whatever it is, y-you can count on me!"

“Good to hear it,” Wain responds. “I’ll be by around noon.”

As I watched the gym leader it was extremely clear something was bothering her, I wasn't sure if I should question or not. Shrugging and deciding against it for now I merely replied, "Well, I was going to help Mark and them first and head there after we get back. Provided we do make it back of course. As I'm not entirely sure what to expect on the journey to Ternai town, nor what I'm really looking for to be honest, I was quite certain that going alone would be safest for everyone else as it's likely very dangerous and I wouldn't want anything bad to happen to you lot since you're in the prime of your youth yet." I smile at them in reassurance.

I mean, if I ran into trouble alone, I could play it off as a traveler from far away that wanted to join their ranks and be a spy. Nobody local would know me other than anyone from town. I could always memorize Mark and Mina's pokedex numbers if I needed to get rid of the one I had to demonstrate to Bandra that I was truely coming to join and had no foul intent, which I do. But how well, or far, would lieing get me? Perhaps I should let Pellana come along....hmmm. And here I go, letting my own doubts get to me, second guessing myself. I could feel my smile fade and perhaps a more.... distant, glossy look come over it as I was fairly deep in thought.

Mina (morning before the Contest Hall Blender disaster – because I really need to finish this time gap ) :

After veeery slooowly making her way through the line and choosing her challenge, Mina was reminded of the rules, and her Pokémon were fitted with devices that, she was told, would suppress any unexpected power jumps until her challenge was complete ((keeps the Pokémon from leveling up. Also suppresses their level down to 50 if they’re higher than that)). After that she was taken to an elevator platform, told not to worry if it changed directions mid-challenge (apparently the floor she ended up on was determined by who her opponent would be and not how far through the challenge she was) and wished luck. Mina thanked the employee and steeled herself as she was raised into sight of the arena.

The floor of the arena looked standard. (Mina hoped that meant she hadn’t gotten any of the spike-or-Stealth-Rock options.) The ceiling and walls of the arena were fitted with several arrays of nozzles, fans and enormous lights. She also thought she saw cameras – of course, they were showing the battles down stairs – and speakers. Mina had the sobering thought that this place must have cost a fortune to build and run.

A door on the other end opened revealing what Mina assumed was her opponent. A voice echoing out of the speakers instructed them to send out their Pokémon. Then some of the nozzles pointed themselves at the battlefield and started blasting it with streams of grit. Sandstorm.

Well I can’t say I haven’t had practice with this, Mina reflected. She called out Oodramer reasoning that if her opponent had any Rock- Ground- or Steel types he’d be her best bet.

There was a flash of light from the other side but at first Mina couldn’t see what it was through the sand. It wasn’t large by Pokémon standards, it had four legs…wait…what…?

Is that a Growlithe???

It was. Mina called for a Bubblebeam. Her opponent yelled something Mina couldn’t make out over the sand. But the Pokédex was perfectly capable of filling her in, and after a moment the results were obvious anyway:

Growlithe uses Sunny Day!

The arena temperature rose a noticeable amount and the air cleared almost immediately.

It was about that moment Mina realized she was woefully unprepared for this. And she desperately wanted something to bang her head against. Oh of course. Why work with the terrain when you can change it?

Oodramer uses Bubblebeam!
It’s super effective!
Growlithe is hit for 23 damage!

((Sandstorm Sunny Day: 4 rounds remaining

Growlithe: 54/77

Oodramer: 83/83))

Mina could see the bubbles popping from the heat and knew the attack wasn’t doing as much damage as it should. Still, it was a solid hit in spite of that, so she called out again:

“Bubblebeam!”

“Roar!”

What does Roar do again? For some reason Mina was thinking sound based damage…

Oodramer uses Bubblebeam!
It’s super effective!
Growlithe is hit for 27 damage!

Growlithe uses Roar!

Oodramer melted into light and vanished back into his Pokéball. The sudden movement pressed the button on one of her other Pokéballs and Houndoom materialized in his place.

Oh right!

((Sandstorm Sunny Day: 3 rounds remaining

Growlithe: 27/77

Oodramer: 83/83 (recalled)
Houndoom: 97/97))

“That’s okay, we can work with this too!” Mina was having flashbacks to her match with Misty back at the Battle Festival. She hoped that poor Ditto was okay, Mina had no idea what had happened to it after Misty…think about it later Mina! “Bite!”

“Reversal!”

…aaand that’s a Fighting move. Drat.

Houndoom uses Bite!
Growlithe is hit for 61 damage! ((I could have skipped the Flinch roll. Such a waste!))
Growlithe faints!

Her opponent’s shoulders slumped, then he straightened and sent out his next Pokémon.

((Sandstorm Sunny Day: 2 rounds remaining

Growlithe: 0/77
Clefairy: 90/90

Oodramer: 83/83 (recalled)
Houndoom: 97/97))

“Clefairy, Toxic!”

Mina smirked, then realized she was getting overconfident and suppressed it.

“Rock Smash!”

At some point, Mina was going to have to retrain that move to something else. But right now, she was really thinking it would be another Fighting move, because it had been so, so useful so far.

Houndoom uses Rock Smash!
Clefairy is hit for 54 damage!

Clefairy uses Toxic!
Houndoom is badly Poisoned!

Clefairy is badly Poisoned by held Toxic Orb!

Wait, what?

Houndoom loses 6 HP to Poison!
Clefairy’s Magic Guard protects against Poison damage!

Oh! And since it’s poisoned it can’t be burned or put to sleep. That’s…counter-intuitive.

((Sandstorm Sunny Day: 1 round remaining

Growlithe: 0/77
Clefairy: 36/90 (badly Poisoned)

Oodramer: 83/83 (recalled)
Houndoom: 91/97 (badly Poisoned – round 1)))

Houndoom uses Rock Smash!
Clefairy is hit for 77 damage!
Clefairy faints!
Houndoom’s Shell Bell restores 9 HP!

Houndoom loses 12 HP to Poison!

The heat from Sunny Day was fading and Mina could hear the sand nozzles start to rev up again.
((Growlithe: 0/77
Clefairy: 36/90 (badly Poisoned)

Oodramer: 83/83 (recalled)
Houndoom: 85/97 (badly Poisoned – round 2)))

A sandstorm brewed!

Her opponent’s last Pokémon appeared, and…

…it was a Weepinbell.

Oh you poor, poor trainer.

Houndoom uses Ember!
It’s super effective!
Critical hit!
Weepinbell is hit for 76 damage!
Weepinbell’s held Occa Berry reduced the damage! ((Which is then immediately nullified by the crit. ))
Houndoom’s Shell Bell restores 9 HP!

Weepinbell uses Acid!
Houndoom is hit for 23 damage!

Houndoom loses 18 HP to Poison!

The sandstorm rages.
Houndoom is buffeted for 6 damage!
Weepinbell is buffeted for 5 damage!
Weepinbell faints!

((Sandstorm in effect.

Growlithe: 0/77
Clefairy: 0/90
Weepinbell: 0/80

Oodramer: 83/83 (recalled)
Houndoom: 65/97 (badly Poisoned – round 3)))

Mina breathed a sigh of relief as the sandstorm nozzles folded back against the walls and the voice over the speakers announced her victory. She bowed to her opponent and recalled Houndoom. One down, three to go.

----------------

Group:

"Well, I was going to help Mark and them first and head there after we get back. Provided we do make it back of course.”

“Then I’m coming too,” Pellana replied decisively.

”As I'm not entirely sure what to expect on the journey to Ternai town, nor what I'm really looking for to be honest, I was quite certain that going alone would be safest for everyone else as it's likely very dangerous and I wouldn't want anything bad to happen to you lot since you're in the prime of your youth yet."

“Excuse me? My Pokémon wiped the floor with yours, and you think it’s a good idea to go wandering alone into the middle of the people who took out me, Elder Monac, and most of the Starlight Squad all at the same time? If all you want to do is kill yourself there are less painful ways of doing it!”

And Pellena made a fifth member of this expedition, and two of them were adults! With high-profile jobs! One of them was even a gym leader, by Arceus! If Bandra hadn't pulled in extra reinforcements to their smuggling/ mining/ archeology/ storage/ whatever it was site, they were going to be in for a world of hurt here. Nodding his thanks to Pellena too, Mark makes his phone call and...

((After the phone call))

He tells the other four, "Alright, we're going at noon when Wain gets here. If anyone wants to buy something from the shop... which we should... n-now would be the time." His face was set, determined. He had one shot to get his pokemon back, and he was going to do it. Now he just had to make sure he wouldn't run out of steam half-way into the assault on that Bandra stronghold...

Mina interrupted what looked like the start of an epic shouting match without even looking up from her examination of the book. “You do remember they’ve already seen you, right? Bandra knows who you are?” This had been why they’d decided not to steal the uniforms off that patrol and sneak in on their last trip through the mountains. “And also they have a mind reader that we were just talking about?” She held up the book and switched topics. “Mind if I hang on to this for now?”

I imagine the frustration on my face was getting the better of me, but I sighed and shrugged. Did I remember if any of Bandra's goons saw me? Well, not exactly. I was somewhat certain they were mostly taken care of. Then I remembered the first two I encountered.... Ah yes. Turning to Mina I say, "Sure, I mean, if you figure it out, that'd be cool to know what's going on with it." I shrugged again, thinking to myself, well nobody else seems to know how to open it, no harm in letting her figure it out, she's smart, likely to think of something eventually.

As Mark mentioned the shop, I recalled a good chunk of change jingling in my pocket from selling all of those extra mining kits. After checking my backpack, it seemed a good opportunity to stock up on items. I mention to the rest that I'll be at the Mart picking up items and will be back as soon as I'm finished and head out to purchase ~

1 Burn Heal
2 Antidote
2 Paralyze Heal
5 Super Potions
5 Potions
and last but not least,
20 Smoke

At a particularly strange look from a nearby customer at the odd amount of smoke I'm purchasing, I simply smile and say, "Could be useful for covering a retreat if anything can't see where I'm at."

Mina (morning before the Contest Hall Blender Disaster) :

Toxic wasn’t anything to mess around with, so Mina opted to have her Pokémon healed after the match. ((+1 round))

The elevator platform shifted her to a different level and the arena came into view. It was set up similarly, but this time large-ish holes in the ceiling spun, spewing a rain of caltrop-looking things until the arena floor was covered with them.

She could see her opponent this time; he was dressed all in blue with a purple scarf. He sent out a Horsea; she sent out Oodramer again.

Horsea loses 8 health from Spikes!
Oodramer loses 10 health from Spikes!

Mina tried to think of something Oodramer could do against a Water type; without risking a Spectral move (which she was not feeling inclined to do; Shadowing someone else’s Pokémon just to try to win a friendly match seemed unnecessarily dirty tactics) he had to fall back on his (terrible) Physical attack. And she couldn’t switch without her other Pokémon taking damage from the Spikes…

…wait…yes she could; Spikes didn’t affect Flying types.

Mina recalled Oodramer and sent out Pidgey. Her opponent called for Rain Dance.

((Rain Dance in effect: 4 rounds remaining.
Horsea: 59/67

Oodramer: 73/83(recalled)
Pidgey: 70/70))

Mina was sorely tempted to try Whirlwind, but it would give her opponent a guaranteed first hit and would only knock a portion off the health of whatever got switched in. She called for Gust instead.

Her opponent called for Ice Beam and Mina swore mentally.

Horsea uses Ice Beam!
It’s super effective!
Pidgey is hit for 132 damage!
Pidgey faints!

That can’t be right… Horsea shouldn’t be that fast. But she checked her Pokédex and it was; Horsea had Swift Swim and it was raining.

Joy.

((Rain Dance in effect: 3 rounds remaining.
Horsea: 59/67

Oodramer: 73/83(recalled)
Pidgey: 0/70))

She sent out Oodramer again.

Oodramer loses 10 health from Spikes!

Bubblebeam or Façade? Horsea resisted the former, but the latter ran off Oodramer’s terrible, terrible Physical strength. This was, of course, assuming it would matter with Horsea being apparently rather powerful.

The rain decided her; Mina called for Bubblebeam. Her opponent seemed to be thinking along the same lines and also called for Bubblebeam. Mina guessed he wasn't making the common mistake of thinking Oodramer was a Water type…

Horsea uses Bubblebeam!
Oodramer is hit for 30 damage!
Slime Body halved the damage!

Oodramer uses Bubblebeam!
It’s not very effective…
Horsea is hit for 24 damage!

((Rain Dance in effect: 2 rounds remaining.
Horsea: 35/67

Oodramer: 33/83
Pidgey: 0/70))

Her opponent apparently decided that wasn’t a solid enough hit; he recalled Horsea and sent out a Magnemite.

Magnemite loses 7 health from Spikes!

Oodramer uses Bubblebeam!
Magnemite is hit for 33 damage!

Magnemite regains 3 health from held Leftovers!

((Rain Dance in effect: 1 round remaining.
Horsea: 35/67
Magnemite: 23/60

Oodramer: 33/83
Pidgey: 0/70))

Magnemite uses Thunder!

No!

Oodramer is hit for 78 damage!
Oodramer faints!

The rain stopped.

Magnemite regains 3 health from held Leftovers!

((Horsea: 35/67
Magnemite: 26/60

Oodramer: 0/83
Pidgey: 0/70))

Mina called out her Houndoom. She wanted badly to melt the Steel type in retaliation for that last attack but she already knew her opponent had a Water type, so she called for Rock Smash in case he decided to switch…which he did…

…at which point Mina discovered he had another Water type as his Clamperl materialized to take the blow.

Houndoom loses 12 health from Spikes!
Clamperl loses 8 health from Spikes!

Houndoom uses Rock Smash!
Clamperl is hit for 18 damage!
Clamperl’s Defense fell!
Houndoom restored 1 HP with held Shell Bell!

Oodramer: 0/83

Her opponent called for Rest but looked a little nervous; Mina called for Rock Smash again:

Houndoom uses Rock Smash!
Clamperl is hit for 20 damage!
Clamperl’s Defense fell!
Houndoom restored 2 HP with held Shell Bell!

Clamperl uses Rest!
Clamperl fell Asleep!
Clamperl restored health!

Clamperl: 64/64 (Defense down 1 level)

Oodramer: 0/83
Pidgey: 0/70
Houndoom: 88/97))

Mina could already tell they were going to be at this for a while. She called for Bite this time, hoping the extra damage from Houndoom’s typing would make a difference.

Houndoom uses Bite!
Clamperl is hit for 49 damage!
Houndoom restored 6 HP with held Shell Bell!

Clamperl uses Sleep Talk!
Clamperl uses Water Gun!
It’s super effective!
Houndoom is hit for 32 damage!

((Horsea: 35/67

Out came Horsea, and once again it took damage from the Spikes. Mina still felt briefly nervous, if it was fast enough this could hurt—

Houndoom uses Bite!
Horsea is hit for 42 damage!
Horsea faints!

Mina had Houndoom clear out the Magnemite with Rock Smash. ((41 damage)) She bowed to her opponent then prepared for her next match.

She was fairly certain she wasn’t getting any speed bonuses at this point so she had her Pokémon healed. ((+1 round))

The next arena filled itself with fog before she could get a good look at her opponent, but she’d learned her lesson from her first two battles: start with Houndoom because he hit harder, faster than her other two Pokémon.

Also, he had Odor Sleuth, which she called for.

Houndoom uses Odor Sleuth!

Growlithe uses Sunny Day!

The fog cleared almost immediately.

Great, another one of these.

((Sunny Day in effect. Rounds remaining: 4
Growlithe: 77/77

Houndoom: 97/97))

Houndoom uses Bite!
Growlithe is hit for 63 damage!

Growlithe uses Reversal!
It’s super effective!
Houndoom is hit for 82 damage!

Yeow!

((Sunny Day in effect. Rounds remaining: 4
Growlithe: 14/77

Houndoom: 15/97))

“Again!” At lease her opponent was slower…

Houndoom uses Bite!
Growlithe is hit for 61 damage!
Growlithe faints!
Houndoom restores 7 HP with held Shell Bell!

((Sunny Day in effect. Rounds remaining: 3
Growlithe: 0/77

Houndoom: 22/97))

Her opponent was sweating heavily enough Mina could see it from clear across the arena. Once his Pokémon appeared she could see why – it was another Weepinbell.

Why are there so many of these – oh right, Bandra is mostly Rock/Ground. ((Also, Chlorophyll meshes well with Weather teams. ))

Mina was a little worried for this trainer, if they didn’t have anything better to throw against her Houndoom than a Grass type.

She was a little less worried for them when she heard them call for Solar Beam however.

And where are they getting these attacks--? Oh right, the prize board. And that old monk tutor. She made a mental note to go scale hunting as soon as she had some free time and not to come back until she had one – maybe several.

Weepinbell uses Solar Beam!
It’s not very effective…
Houndoom is hit for 31 damage!
Houndoom faints!

((Sunny Day in effect. Rounds remaining: 2
Growlithe: 0/77
Weepinbell: 85/85

Houndoom: 0/97))

Mina recalled Houndoom mournfully while her opponent did a victory fist pump. She sent out Pidgey to replace her Dark type.

Weepinbell uses Sludge Bomb!
Pidgey is hit for 91 damage!
Pidgey faints!

((Sunny Day in effect. Rounds remaining: 1
Growlithe: 0/77
Weepinbell: 85/85

Houndoom: 0/97
Pidgey: 0/70))

Mina didn’t know if there was a point in continuing but sent out Oodramer anyway.

Weepinbell uses Solar Beam!
Oodramer is hit for 77 damage!

Mina wondered why Oodramer wasn’t using his held Sitrus Berry, then nearly smacked herself as she realized she’d forgotten to give him one..

Oodramer uses Façade!
Weepinbell is hit for 14 damage!

“I yield!” Mina called, looking around to see if there was a button she needed to push to make it official. Her mind kept trying to find ways out of the current mess, but nothing was coming up – even if Oodramer could pull off a miracle once the fog came back, her opponent still had one Pokémon left. Realistically even if she’d remembered the Berry she would probably have lost this one.

Still rather embarrassing against the Grass type, considering, but not worth Oodramer getting blasted again for.

Fortunately someone must have heard her, because the announcer voice declared her forfeit and the fog nozzles folded back into the walls, allowing Mina to recall Oodramer. The elevator platform took her back to the lobby, a readout informing her of her BP winnings while an assistant took the power limiter things off. ((+1 BP for the second match victory, +1 BP for the third match loss, added to her existing points that’s 10 BP total. No speed bonuses since Match 2 was eleven rounds even before the healing penalty.

On the bright side, +1 level for Pidgey!

The upshot was, she was out just in time for lunch. Once her Pokémon were healed of course…and it looked like her Sitrus Berry was ready for water too… ((+1 watering for Sitrus, which is now in bloom))

Mina obtained a pastry from the coffee shop ((-100 PD, 5450 remaining)) and then when to look for Pellana, figuring the other trainer was probably out by now.

Mina found her looking up at the prize board, the Gym Leader’s expression distraught.

“What’s wrong?” Mina asked, causing Pellana to jump.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t see you.” Pellana rubbed her eyes. “It’s nothing, I just thought I could win enough Battle Points today for Fling, but I lost earlier than I’d hoped. Today’s the last day before the prizes switch…”

Mina wanted to feel sorry for her but was getting too hung up on something else… “Why did you want Fling?” Mina’s understanding was that it required ammunition. Maybe not the most practical attack?

“I need some type coverage. I’m not in Ternai anymore, my Pokémon aren’t going to be able to hit Ghost types outside the city without the right type of attacks. And Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan don’t learn a lot of Dark moves. I might not have lost Ternai if I…”

“Okay, first, stop that,” Mina interrupted. “I’ll admit I wasn’t there, but from what I’ve been told other people were, so unless all of them stood back and did nothing, the fight was never all on you.” Pellana was starting to look offended but Mina plowed on anyway. “Second, there’s apparently a spy or something in the Starlight Squad, so you don’t get to blame yourself for getting backstabbed along with everyone else. And third,” Mina dug around in her pack while Pellana’s expression switched to shock, “don’t bother with Fling. Use this instead,” and Mina handed her the Natural Gift SM.

((-1 SM 16 Natural Gift))

“Wait, are you sure?”

Mina felt her inner hoarding tendencies rising and promptly squashed them. “I’m sure. It’s a Physical move, your Pokémon are good at that. And you can switch out the damage typing to whatever you want.”

“But only if I have the right Berries.”

“But you would have needed something to use as ammunition for Fling, anyways,” Mina countered.

Pellana didn’t seem to have an argument against that. “…I owe you for this.”

“Good, then you can come back to Ceris with me and learn to make Poffin,” Mina replied in a that-settles-that tone of voice.

“Mina, I can’t cook.

Pellana.” Mina’s tone was no-nonsense. “Please don’t tell me you’re more afraid of a Poffin mixer than you are of Team Bandra. I’m going to help you. And Elder Rashel has faith in you. And Mark wanted a match with you too, so you should go back for that at least.”

Pellana laughed at the last part, as Mina half-hoped she would.

“Okay, okay. But I’m telling you right now, it’s not going to work!”

“It’s settled then.” Pellana nodded unenthusiastically, but started towards the exit. “Wait, no – we’re taking the fast way.” Pellana looked puzzled until Mina called out her Natu. “Natu, take Pellana and I back to Ceris please.”

((At Ceris: ))

They arrived in Ceris a short time later after another double-jump. Mina was getting used to this; Pellana was looking queasy.

“You know,” the Gym Leader informed her once the former’s stomach seemed to settle, “If you worked on your Natu’s Special Attack more, it will be able to go farther without having to Teleport more than once like that.”

“That would help?” Mina directed the question to her Pokémon.

“Natu!” he preened under a wing briefly.

“Huh. Well, we’ll work on that then! With Poffin. After we make some good ones,” Mina added just to let Pellana know she wasn’t off the hook for that.

((At the Ceris Contest Hall: ))

The pair of them spent about an hour first establishing what Pellana already knew about Poffin (which was minimal even by Mina’s standards) and what they had to work with as far as Berries. It turned out Pellana had rather a lot of those (courtesy both Elder Rashel and a friend of hers who was a breeder), but nearly all of them were of the sort that were only good for Poffin.

That being the case, Mina told her to put the handful that weren’t away; no sense wasting them.

Mina decided to start slow; she told Pellana to separate them by primary flavor. Corrected her when the Gym Leader managed to come up with six groups despite there only being five flavors. Quizzed her on which was which flavor. Then had her mix them up and start again. After doing this three or four times, Mina started treating them like flash cards – taking out one Berry at a time and having Pellana name it and its flavor. Once Mina was feeling confident Pellana was starting to get them straight, she started quizzing her one which flavors cancelled out which.

It was a solid two hours before Mina let her near the Poffin Blender.

Mina started out with a demonstration – fortunately Pellana had a LOT of the Poffin Berries (Mina seemed to recall those were…proliferate compared to the combat-useful varieties) so using one up as an example wasn’t going to hurt anything.

And then it was Pellana’s turn. And Mina was beginning to see problems.

Pellana was…overenthusiastic. She spilled Poffin mix almost every time. When the mix started to thicken she generally didn’t notice until it was nearly as thick as hardened cement, by which point it was already burned. Mina tried telling her to slow down, but the Gym Leader still seemed to have trouble telling when the mix was thick enough to stop. At this point they were spending more time cleaning the Blender out than cooking and everyone else in the Contest Hall was giving them a wide berth thanks to the burning smell.

Pellana sat back and fanned the smoke away after yet another failure. “At least I can tell when it’s ruined now,” she said wryly.

Mina was thinking very hard. “Pellana…”

“You can call me ‘Ana’ you know.”

“…Ana, do you have any of the wrist weight things?”

“You mean for exercise? Yes, why?”

“…Put them on. Then try again. I had a thought and I want to see if I’m right.”

The next batch turned out better. Surprisingly so.

I thought so.

“That helped,” Pellana noted aloud. “That helped a lot. Why did that help?”

“You’re a lot stronger than me,” Mina pointed out. “I’ve been using the thickness of the mix as a stopping point, and telling you to stop when it gets hard to stir, because for me, when it gets hard to stir it’s done. But it isn’t getting hard for you because you have actual muscles so you keep blowing right past the stopping point. The wrist weights made it harder to stir and that made up some of the difference. So we can’t go by thickness for you. Let’s try going by color.”

“But they’re all different colors.” Pellana pointed out.

This was true, and there was a good bit of difference in color between nicely-baked Sour yellow Poffin and nicely-baked Dry blue Poffin.

“We’ll start out with Dry, like the first one I made, so you’ll have something to use as a guide. Once you’ve gotten that down I’ll mix up one of the other major flavors, and we’ll just focus on single-flavor Poffin for now until you’re good at all of them.” Mina privately hoped that by then Ana wouldn’t need as much guiding, although given their progress so far she wasn’t hopeful. “We aren’t trying to make you a master chef right away, we can work on multi-flavored Poffin some other time.”

Mina’s stomach rumbled loudly. “And we should probably take a break for dinner first.

((Later… ))

The pair of them stopped by the Pokémon Center briefly for food before returning to the Contest Hall. Progress, after that point, was much better, to the point that around 6 PM, Mina was confident that Pellana could manage single-Berry Poffin consistently on her own and they were ‘graduating’ to two-Berry Poffin.

Unfortunately they were running low on Berries at this point, and that was when everything went downhill.

“What happens if we cut them in half?” Pellana suggested as they surveyed the tiny remaining number of Berries.

“I don’t know,” Mina answered truthfully. The girl who’d led the class – Ailesha, that was it – hadn’t actually said anything about that.

“…Should we try it?”

“Might as well,” Mina agreed. Most of the Contest Hall’s current inhabitants were giving them a wide berth already, Mina doubted more smoke was going to drive them off any further.

But, as it turned out, the Berries hitting the mixer without half their skins was a lot messier than planned.

Enough to spill out and cause a fire in fact.

There was a brief period of swearing before Mina called out Oodramer; Pellana ran for the fire extinguisher. Bubblebeam wasn’t doing a lot; the Blender was durable and designed to contain liquids. Smoke was pouring out in terrifying thickness and speed now as the half-baked mix – which obviously neither trainer could stir, presently – also burned and caught fire. Mina realized they needed to unplug the thing to stop this just as the smoke cloud engulfed her.

She couldn’t remember afterwards if she’d actually managed it or just passed out, because the next thing she knew she was in the Pokémon Center with an oxygen mask over her face, and a purple-haired trainer sitting on her bed.

----------------

Mina (morning, shopping and preparations) :

Mina’s first preparations consisted of giving Oodramer a fresh Sitrus Berry – very fresh as the latest batch had produced fruit while she was unconscious ((+5 Sitrus)) – and stuffing a new one into the pot to replace it ((so +1 watering for the Sitrus)). After a bit of thought, she switched out Kindergeist for Cosmas.

She did a little shopping as well, skipping Pokéballs for the time being. She also skipped status healers – between store bought items and Berries, if she didn’t have enough of those to get by on this next mission then they were probably in too far over their heads for it to matter. She did grab some more Potions and Super Potions however, as they always seemed to burn through those with frightening speed.

((+2 Potions
+3 Super Potions

2,750 PD remaining))

By the time she was done the Liechi was ready for water too. ((+1 watering for Liechi, now in bloom))

She met up with Pellana in the Pokémon Center; the Gym Leader was debating over what Berry to give her Hitmonlee for the trip up the mountains. Mina tried to give useful advice; she also considered warping over to Trainer Hill to exchange some of her BP for Revives, but figured she should wait for the boys to finish their shopping first so she could let them know where she was going.

((And that’s Mina caught up! ))

----------------

Group:

((Matt: Let me know what color smoke, you have 4800 PD remaining
Mark: 2650 PD remaining.

Let me know if anything looks amiss!))

The boys return to find Mina and Pellana debating over something with apparent seriousness. There is a largish collection of Berries on the table nearby. They break off their conversation as you enter.

“Hey, guys?” Mina asks. “Can you help Ana figure out what to do with her Hitmonlee? I was going to ‘port over to Trainer Hill to pick up some things.”

Ranger Wain has yet to arrive, but he also isn’t due for another fifteen minutes or so.

(OoC ~ Uhm, red I guess if it really makes a difference... I'm hoping this smoke puts out like, a legit sort of smoke screen with the amount I purchased and not something ridiculous like.... a smoke ring you get from blowing smoke via ciggerette )

Stroking my chin thoughtfully as I reply, "Well, since she thrashed me so soundly I doubt any suggestions I have will make any difference, but I suppose we might need to be filled in on whatever it was involving a Hitmonlee that you two were talking about. Like, is she trading it for something? Teaching it something? What's the plan."

Mark, not knowing too much about berries and having entirely forgotten about his berry app, would tell the gym leader, "If we are going to fight Bandra, then most likely you are going to encounter a lot of rock, fighting or dark pokemon. S-So... well, I'd go with a berry that helps against Rock or D-dark attacks. Or just a healing berry. Y-You know... Sitrus or something."

The expression Pellana makes in response to this advice can best be described as strained. “My Hitmonlee is a Fighting type,” she points out.

Pellana is starting to look annoyed. “You two aren’t helping at all. Can’t you be more specific? Do you have some kind of strategy I can fit into?”
