"Bypass the camp and go straight for a psycho boss that knows we're coming for him? That makes sense." I say nodding approvingly.

Mark stops his hand half-way into his bag, reaching for his binoculars, and he looks at Mina, then Matt, and then Wain. "Wait. Is there a back entrance?" The kid turns his head to the Bronzor that Wain had tagging along with them, and he asks, "You're a native wild pokemon, right? Do you know of any ways to get into the ruins that don't involve going through that cave right there?"

Wait, ruins? “You mean to tell me we are in fact going to the Shrine of Light? Is there a reason you didn’t bring this up earlier?”

Mark blinks and then asks, "What is the Shrine of Light?" He'd only ever heard of it being talked about in passing, so he had no idea what was actually important about it beyond maybe having been a place where Bandra captured a legendary pokemon. "I just know they have a base in the ruins, and that it's where they have a whole bunch of stolen pokemon and items, including my Aaron."

Why do I travel with these people???

“Mark,” Mina growled, trying not to let her voice rise because they were way too close to the Bandra camp for that “it’s on the map and clearly labeled. There’s even a road going through it.”

Looking a bit hurt at the implication in her tone, Mark says, "Well I know that, Mina, I'm not blind. But the fact that the shrine is important right now has never been explained to me. I got here somewhere around three weeks ago, and all I've ever heard about it is that Bandra has a presence there, and that some people in the Starlight Squad died around it or something." Frowning now, he adds, "I also thought it was like the Ruins of Alph, because of all the Unknown script and tablets, so kinda unimportant outside of archaeology and its local pokemon. So what am I missing that makes this my worst idea yet?"

"Is there some sort of problem with the location the enemy picked out? Perhaps we should have sent a letter first, politely asking them to move else where for us to raid their base?" Didn't occur to me that where we were going would have a negative sort of effect on the locals. Figured they'd just be happy to get rid of some Bandra goons. What would a group of Bandra people be called? Bandarians? Hmmm..

Mark blinked once as she brought this up again, and said, "Oh." His head tilts ever so slightly as he asks, "Then do you know about a back door entrance? Because if we can skip all of the traps set up here, that would be... pretty good."

Scratching at the back of his head, an embarrassed flush to his face now, he mumbles, "U-Um... c-could you maybe... show us that, t-then?" And with the feeling that he was no longer the spearhead of this operation because he somehow messed up, the shy, nervous kid comes back and the driven, confident Mark disappears.

((I’m just going to auto this part or we’re going to be here all month.))

Mina sighed, shooing everyone back the way they’d come until they were far enough from the camp she could safely call out her Natu. Which she did, and then had Natu start transporting people to the path she’d been on the last time she’d been to the Shrine of Light – north of the complex, out of sight of the western entrance but within easy walking distance. Once everyone had gotten transported and settled, she directed them south, toward the Shrine.

“We aren’t going to be able to Teleport once we’re in the Shrine proper,” Mina warned. “So keep that in mind if we need to retreat.”

Although there were footprints and other signs of human traffic, the group didn’t encounter any patrols before reaching the road. The Shrine of Light was distantly viewable from here; an old, lengthy temple complex carved of pale stone that sprawled alongside the road.

Mina also noticed (and pointed out to the group who hadn’t been here before) that the road had been cleared; previously it had been blocked by rockslides.

About that point the Pokémon alerted the group that people were coming. Mina hastily directed everyone into half-remembered hiding spots before the group of Grunts got into sight.

The Grunts in question weren’t being anywhere near as stealthy.

“…thought we already checked back this way. Anyway wouldn’t any troublemakers be on the other side of the Shrine?”

“Maybe not. The boss got a radio call that someone’s been Teleporting around again, so we gotta check our side of the mountains to make sure no one’s gotten in behind us…”

((Unless the group intervenes, the Grunts then wander out of sight down the road.))

Mark listens to try and make out how many people were on the road, and mentally cursed. So they did have a way to detect teleportation... that was a bad sign. Closing his eyes, he mentally asks Tattersail, <How many grunts are out there?> If they could take down another group and didn't have to worry about these grunts coming up behind them, then...

Mark holds out three fingers to signal this number to the others.. Three. Dang. That's enough to be a problem if they looped around and came in behind this group... Leaning over, he mutters to the group, saying, "Alright, we should p-probably jump these like the last sentinels. Tattersail will hit the one at the front of the group, our wild Bronzor friend will hit the back guy, and Sengar and Matt's tailow will hit the one in the middle. Sound good to everyone?"

Mina nodded and (once the message had been quietly relayed) both Pellana and Ranger Wain agreed as well, and the Pokémon got into position.

There was a brief, heart-stopping moment where one of the Grunts appeared to hear something and started to turn around.

But by the time she got more than half a strangled cry out the attacks were already in motion and the three Bandra crumpled to the ground in short order.

Looking pale at the close call, Mina checked the roads and hastily started dragging the Grunts out of sight to be dealt with, waving for Pellana to help her when her own ((lousy )) physical strength wasn’t doing the job fast enough.

“What next?” Mina whispered to the rest of the group.

"Hang on you lot, Weepinbell, would you be so kind as to tie them up with your vine whip and gag their mouths so they can't scream. One close call is all I care for." I turn solemnly and look at the others, "Like Mark said, let's push forward. They clearly know we've got psychic pokemon to teleport us around, the longer we linger here, the more peons are likely to start searching the area. As long as we've still got a, possible, element of surprise, we should make haste and get the headman before they get us. We can't last forever...well..." I look towards Pellana and smile, "others of us can't. You and the good Ranger may be fine. But all for one and one for all, yes?"

Weepinbell has the goons bound and gagged in short order.

“All right then,” Mina agreed. “Let’s go.”

The group presses onward and the Shrine grows in the distance. A gust of air from the east brings a sudden, overpowering smell of carrion – a mix of rotting meat and fresh blood.

When they come into sight of the main entrance, Mina can tell that the barricade from her first visit and the magically locked entrance to the main portion of the Shrine have been removed; facts she points out to the group. Two Grunts are milling around the front entrance, presumably acting as sentries, and a third is carrying an indistinct bundle towards—

—towards—

—a huge pile of Pokémon corpses. The pile is at least twice the height of the Grunt and wraps around the structure out of sight. The corpses are in various states of decay and a wide variety of species: Wurmple, Poochyena, Hoppip, Magikarp, Rattata, the third Grunt adds a Wiliter ((Helnith Caterpie equivalent)) to the pile as you watch…the only thing they have in common is that they’re all definitely dead. Most of them are more common species, but there’s a dead Quilava and a few other rarer Pokémon in the mix too. An enormous cloud of flies swarms over the bodies, so loud the group can hear the faint buzzing of their wings even at this distance. Oddly there were no Murkrow scavenging from the carrion, but then, there were Murkrow bodies in the pile too, so maybe they’d tried at one point…

Ranger Wain stops dead in his tracks at the sight; both he and the Gym Leader appear horrified.

Ranger Wain manages to choke out: “They’re killing them. They’ve been killing them all.”

“Not just the Pokémon; look,” Pellana points, and the group sees a smaller pile off to the side. Human corpses; at least six but probably no more than a dozen.

Mina just looked grim. “The Grunt we interrogated last time mentioned trainers had died.” She shifts unsteadily in place for a moment, then continues, steel in her voice: “What are we going to do about it?”
