"Alright, you guys look better, which is good. Pyrofyl and Poli, I'll have you two train with each other some, maybe an hour. Afterwards I'm going to continue digging around here for more edibles and loot. Gastly, feel free to disappear and keep an eye open for any approaching pokemon or trainers. Just... appear in front of my face and scare the bejezus out of me or something if you see anything. Alright bud?"

I suppose I'll keep digging away from the tree for about three hours after training.

“You can keep it in your pack, just be sure not to drop it. Or use it like a shield, or toss it like a Frisbee. It’s Styrofoam, not steel.”

Well, that was fair. Mark would store it in his pack, keeping softer things (like his clothes) around it to keep the harder items from digging into the styrofoam, and, after checking his map and seeing the distance, he would go to grab a water bottle and then start his trip.

He'd be going to more direct overland rout today. While the road might be more open, Mark was a little bit worried about Bandra putting people onto the road (since the nest had been kicked a little bit recently...) and he both wanted to see the countryside for his journal and he wanted to see what local pokemon there might be between the two towns.

Matt:

((+2 levels for Pyrofyl))

As young as he is, Pyrofyl makes progress with astonishing speed:

Pokemon: Pyrofyl
Type: Fire
Ability: Blaze
Gender: Male
Level: 7
Held Item: NONE
Stats--
HP: 24 +34
Attack: 15
Def: 13 +17
Sp. Attack: 15
Sp. Def: 13 +17
Speed: 14
Moves:
Harden
Tackle
Ember
Frenzy Plant (Egg Move)

Your time spent foraging also bears fruit ((har, har)) as you manage to dig up an Energy Root, a number of sweet non-Pokémon fruits one of the cruise line brochures had said were edible, and a couple Watmel Berries.

You finish about 1 PM.

----------------

Mark:

You pick up a Fresh Water from the bar ((+1 Fresh Water, 2 total. -200 PD, 2450 PD remaining)) and begin on your way.

It’s mostly grassland in this area, with the odd tree, bush, and rock formation scattered about for interest. Alas, the wild Pokémon are not obliging today, and the most you see is a small pride of Shinx off in the distance (who vanish as soon as they see you) and a pit the Pokédex tells you used to belong to a Trapinch but the occupant is long gone.

You arrive at Trainer Hill around 1 PM; it’s gotten quite hot and the hazardous materials you’re transporting have provided the unexpected bonus of providing a nice cool spot on your back. The building is gleaming and new-looking compared to most of the buildings in Helnith, with reinforced glass doors and pristine white tile floors visible through them. You can see the signs of abandoned camps all around the base – old campfire pits, the odd lost piece of equipment – but more importantly you can see the stall the nurse mentioned set up near the entrance.

"Good job team. I suppose we'll keep tracking towards Trainer Hill, or Skybreak City, which ever one we're closer too for supplies. Like baby food." I say thinking of Pyrofyl. Let's keep our senses sharp and keep an eye out for pokemon and our ears open if we hear anything odd. Wouldn't mind coming across another Rhyhorn, could be useful.

What other types have we come across since landing here? I think to myself randomly.

Let's see... Shinx, Linoones, Rhyhorn, Twiggen's in trees, Trappinch, Poliwag's  in the river. Those Bandra hooligans have a bunch of those Wispyfern's as well as fighting, ground, and the occasional electric type.

Argh! Why does it seem any type that might have an advantage over a Bandra member would be subject to being weak as well! Man this is frustrating.

Wiping off his forehead, shifting his backpack, and telling Tatterail, "Well, here we are..." And then Mark makes his way to that stand. It was somewhat unfortunate that there hadn’t been much on the trail, since he’d been kinda hoping to see something to stop and sketch, but he’d just have to settle for a picture of the Trapinch sand trap and Trainer Hill itself.

Hmmm... dust in the distance... I suppose if we head that way we may come across something. Probably trouble. Regardless we shall head towards Skybreak city and ask the citizens what they know about the area. Curious about that prison northeast of Trainer Hill. Ah yes, supplies as well. Potions of sorts and perhaps a frying pan to cook with. And hopefully someone will know about how to take care of baby pokemon.... OH! Pokemon food too! Can't forget that!

I think to myself.  Later on after walking towards the direction of the herd I end up thinking of my shadowed pokemon. Was it wrong for me to put them all in storage? Taillow is seriously hurt, I don't recall asking how long she'd need to heal for. Can she even BE healed back to normal if she's shadowed? Or would that make her hostile if she woke up? I end up talking to Poliwhirls' pokeball.

"What do you think buddy, should we bring out some of that shadowed crew and try to cleanse them? Ratman shouldn't be too bad with that item he's holding. I hope. Then again, what if they go on a rampage and attack some innocent, very low leveled pokemon? That could snowball out of control pretty quickly. Suppose if we go to Trainer Hill to do that, if things DO go south, there should be plenty of strong trainers that'd be empathetic to KO our shadowed friends." I say before clutching the temples on my head thinking about how stressful of a decision this is and all the problems it could cause.

Mark takes a quick look at the options, takes out his journal and a pen to note down a few of the options that looked promising -each of the 900pd ones... were those associated with stats? He'd have to check,- and then he tells the merchant, "Oh, don't worry. I need to drop something off quick and I'll be back." Because while he definitely needed to pick one or two of these up to help out Sengar and maybe help Chevlain warm up to him, the samples were on a timer, and he didn't want to lose track of time. Stop getting distracted by shinnies, Mark, get inside of Trainer Hill proper and finish that job.

Poli’s response sounds incredibly well thought out; pity it’s in Pokéspeak and you can’t understand a word of it.

You get a rude surprise when you reach Skybreak City: the city is surrounded by barricades, the main roads are guarded (it occurs to you this is the first time you’ve seen actual police instead of Rangers since you arrived in Helnith) and there’s a looong line to get in. (Closer inspection reveals there is also a line for leaving the city, but it’s much shorter.) The people in line, however, are mostly fine with answering your questions.

Apparently one of the big selling points of Skybreak City – among several, it’s a large city by Helnith standards – is the Department Store. It’s the largest shop in Helnith, and even with the war shortages it still has more variety of Pokéballs than any other shop in the region.

You also learn that Steltag Prison is where the Bandra Officer Altros was locked up after his defeat by Dream and the Heroes of Helnith, though no one is terribly confident that he will stay locked up if Triple B makes any concentrated effort to get him out. He’s been there for a few weeks at this point however, so the consensus is that the Bandra boss isn’t terribly interested in fishing him out.

In other news, the Starlight Squad – or a large chunk of it, at any rate – are apparently camped out north of the city because Cassilda won’t let them in. Their local leader, a man named Sesh, is being stubborn however, and refuses to just take them somewhere else.

----------------

Mark:

The interior of Trainer Hill is shiny and new-looking, and the huge Battle Frontier emblem in the floor draws the eye. The front desk is enormous and spans most of the room; you see a Nurse Joy on one end, moderately busy, but the other ladies seated behind it appear to be checking trainers in. Giant televisions are suspended above it, displaying a number of Pokémon Battles. A giant digital notice board stretches toward the ceiling on one wall. Padded couches, nice little tables and the occasional potted plant are elegantly arranged around the room. Off to one side is an old man in monk’s robes with a floor-length beard, surrounded by meditation mats and pillows – many of which are occupied. Opposite him is a little specialty coffee shop; it being roughly lunch time there’s a bit of a line.

Well now, the trip here may have been a bit boring, but this area was more than worthy of a page or two in his "tourist trap" section of the journal. Looking longingly at the cafe for just a little bit, Mark shakes his head and mutters, "No, no... have to save money for the cologne and pokemon tools, can't get distracted." So instead he gets in line to both register himself at the Hill (if that was necessary) and to ask where he should bring the samples in his pack. It might take a while to get through the line, but he could pull out his journal and he'd cut out the possible distractions precisely because he wanted to make sure the chilled materials would still be viable.

Guess I'll stand in line until I can get into the city. Thinking I'll ask the Starlight Squad questions when I exit after I think of some. Also somewhat surprised to hear the prison isn't under Bandra control. Maybe they're just keeping tabs on the place.

Let's see... after I get in, we'll go to the Poke Center first, check out the department store... Hmm.... See what else is in town.

Mark:

The nurse takes the samples from you with a smile and thanks you for bringing them. She runs your Pokédex through a machine and when you get it back you see you’ve been rewarded for your trouble. ((+3 BP for Mark, 3 total))

The line for Trainer Hill moves swiftly and before you know it you’re at the front desk. The lady behind it asks you which challenge you’d like to take.

((DM reminder:
Normal – one on one battle with three Pokémon each.
Roulette – same as Normal battle, except the battlefield will be affected by random weather, Trick Room, or other environmental effects.
Double – battle with a partner.

* Participants are allowed three Pokémon, which must be selected at the beginning of the challenge.
* All Pokémon selected must be within five levels of each other.
* Held items are fine, but the trainer can’t use any items on the Pokémon during the challenge (no Potions etc.)

Pokémon are not automatically healed after each fight. Participants can choose to have their Pokémon healed between matches, but this will incur a 1-round penalty.

BP rewards for each battle type are as follows:

Normal:
Lose   |   Win
Match 1:   0          0
Match 2:   0          0
Match 3:   0          1
Match 4:   1          2

Roulette or Double:
Lose   |   Win
Match 1:   0          0
Match 2:   0          1
Match 3:   1          2
Match 4:   2          3

Trainer Hill will also award bonus points for fast completion:
+3 points for winning all four matches in 5 rounds or less
+2 points for 5-8 rounds
+1 for 8-10 rounds.

Additionally, management will occasionally award additional points for trainers who pull off something impressive, at their discretion.))

----------------

Matt:

The police officers checking people in appear to be doing some basic security checks. People are being directed to empty their pockets into little plastic bowls, much like at an airport. One officer checks ID and consults a computer, another waves a techy wand over people, a third is giving the contents of bags and purses a cursory look. Sturdy-looking Growlithe patrol up and down the line, sniffing people. It’s slow and tedious.

Finally it’s your turn and you reach the front of the line. The serious-looking officer gestures for your ID and asks, “Name and purpose of visit?”

Well now, this was an interesting dilemma. Mark had no partner for this competition, and didn't exactly want to get paired with some random person, so that shut down that possibility. But he still had two others to go with... and considering them, he figures, hey, why not get zany with his first attempt, right?

So Mark went with Roulette. And as for his team... well, if they were judged based on speed, he should probably use his strongest and fastest pokemon, right? Unfortunately, he couldn't run Chevlain, both because she probably wouldn't obey him and because she was still more than 5 levels higher than his next strongest pokemon, but that left him with Tattersail, Fisher and Jessia.

Running Tattersail would be a risk. He figured that getting knocked out by her going down would count as a disqualification from the entire competition for him, but she was also likely his strongest pokemon flat-out, and would also be his best option for getting more points and the tech that those points could purchase... which he should really check out, now that he thought about it. Oh well. He'd look after the first round through the system.

He does ask the tournament people, "Is it okay for me to run a pokemon I'm psychically connected to in this competition?" Because he didn't want to do something that would disqualify him, or come back to bite him in the butt for not warning the nurses about to happen, just because he forgot to ask another simple question.

“Over here, please,” the officer gestures impatiently. “We’ll be happy to talk to all of your friends.”

It’s pretty obvious he doesn’t believe you.

----------------

Mark:

“Step right this way,” she indicates a door behind her.

Your Pokémon are fitted with devices that the Trainer Hill employee tells you will prevent unexpected power jumps ((read: none of your Pokémon will level up until the device is removed. They also suppress the Pokemons’ levels down to 50 if they’re higher than that)). You end up on an elevator platform and the employee tells you not to worry if it changes directions mid-challenge and wishes you good luck.

The ceiling and walls of the arena are fitted with several arrays of nozzles, fans and enormous lights. Cameras and speakers are placed strategically to maximize their ability to get good coverage of the battle to come. A voice echoes out of the speakers and tells you to send out your Pokémon. And as you watch, a hum seems to emit from the walls and the air in the arena wavers oddly, though you can still see your opponent (male, wearing a flashy jacket) clearly and there doesn’t seem to be any temperature change.

((Trick Room!))

Well, now Mark was sad that he hadn't brought Marick into this tournament with him! But he'd do the best he could with the situation, and seeing as the arena was going to be permanently under the effects of trick room... Okay that was actually pretty bad for two thirds of his team. But Fisher, being rather tanky and relatively slow, wouldn't exactly mind... If necessary, the water type even had a high priority move to get past the arena's effects.

So that's just the pokemon Mark sent out! And let's see what the lapras had to square up against.
