ICTC3: Freebooters

My pirate, ogre, halfling, gunpowder and Crazy magic faction!

Firstly, a little back story about the world.

Vearth, That is the worlds name.

For a long as I remember, there has always been a war on. The halflings and ogres fighting the dwarves, the dwarves fighting the elves, the elves fighting the nymphs, Nymphs fighting Genies, Genies fighting humans, humans fighting orcs, All against the undead wastes, Always a war. I'm by no means complaining, all the more work for mercenaries, but I see the very worst of it all. ogres and halflings having to resort to cannibalism to  stay alive, Human's execution of traitors in cold blood, the Genies lack of interest in their own people, Dwarves destroying ancestral homes to get at resources, Elves butchering innocent people to make their trees grow faster, Orcs senselessness and short tempered death matches between toddlers, Nymphs battle orgies. I have seen the worst that this war has to offer, and every memory, every face, every ******* tear shed haunts me in my work.

I would say it was better in the old days, but it wasn't, because then we didn't have the war, we had the dragons. Hateful, Murderous, conceited bastards that they were, all eight of them! They and their demons followers terrorized the land, laying waste to everything, Killing, maiming, destroying at their leisure. The most powerful creatures in Vearth, and the most evil. Damn them, Damn them all to the darkest pits of the underworld! How dare they use my people to massacre so much life, Including my tribe!!

"Luckily the heroes came" many people say. Yes, the Heroes came, alright, The nine of them. Jolly the halfling, Roger the ogre, Oberon the elf, Monoke the nymph, Jasmine the genie, Grumaldil the dwarf, Black claw the orc, Roland the Knight and Archibald the mage, they came. They drove the demons away, and destroyed the dragons power after a climatic battle, which has been told on many tongues. They Celebrated there victory and were made kings of their lands. Happy ending, you'd agree.

Except it wasn't. There was one dragon who fleed, one Dragon, Heresh, Fleed to the wastelands. One hero, Archibald, wanted to follow him, knowing that whilst one dragon was free, their mission could never be completed. The other heroes asked, demanded and tempted him to stay, to eat, to drink, to make merry, to relax, they had won, they had got the glory. But Archibald thought that as long as one existed, they could never win. He left, vowing to hunt this dragon until the end times. The others imprison the remaining dragons, and returned to their kingdom.

Now, the world is in turmoil.

AKA: ogres, pirates, halflings etc.

Worship: Ogres and Halflings pay great homage to their own pantheon, including multiple gods of feasting and bounty, goddess of the seas and goddesses of the land, and gods of the sky. most interesting, however, there is no one god for these things, and so the Ogres and halflings have a very simple way of worship. If you wanted to worship the goddess of fruit, you would eat a piece of fruit and bury the seeds. Some people have called this way of worship mad and barbaric, but Ogres and halflings disagree because they see it as more constructive worshiping of gods, rather than being in a stone building with sore knees.

Philosophy: Explore, plunder, enjoy life to the full! Be happy, Be Brave and be Free.

Motto: "Sail away where no ball and chain can keep us from the roaring waves!"

Country: Ogres and halflings originally were Created by the Beyonder, along with the humans, elves, orcs, Genies, nymphs, dwarves and the nine dragons. The Beyonder designed the Ogres and halflings to be a care-free race.

Capital city: the typical example of a capital city for the ogres is White Shore, the black barque or Red city. they aren't cities, per say, but giant ships, housing the three pirate lords. There are no fixed locations for these ships and most of them are so massive that they count as seperate Islands.

associated colours: depending on what pirate captain the crew belongs to , their colours vary. however, all captains must show an allegence to one of the 3 pirate lords by displaying a flag with their colours on, ei red, white or black.

style of government: it is a split system between three people, white beard, red beard and black beard. all of them roam around the sea and demand pirates to pay them taxes to avoid being sunk. pirates are allowed to go under their own flag, but to do that, they must swear allegiance to one of the big three. If one pirate ship boards another of the same allegiance, both have to answer to their lord. If a pirate ship attacks a pirate ship of different allegiance, then thats fine, if they want to be suicidal, because the Pirate lords will avenge their underlings defeat with the fury of a thunderstorm.

the pirate lords, or "bearded lord", are as powerful as any king, and almost twice as ruthless, cunning, fearless, and dangerous as the next powerful captain. their name doesn't change, even if they lose the beard or don't have one. the current bearded lords are white beard Bartholomew Roberts, red beard Anne Bonny and black beard Edward Teach. underneath them are several private Captains who enforce their laws. examples include Calico jack and Mary Reads under Anne bonny, Samuel Bellamy under Bart Roberts, and Sam Burgess, John Augur and Jane Laffite under Edward teach.

the pirate lords personalities are noticibly different, apart from the over-riding greed, cunning, ruthlessness, bravery and dangerousness:

-Edward (Ogre) is noticeably underhanded on occasions, willing to Massarce many innocent civilians with overwhelming forces or Shackling said civilians in chains. He is, however, one of the most successful pirates in the world, and he is the one with the highest bounty out of all the pirate lords. Black beard also likes to Party on more occasions than most, and is often scolded by his captains for being too morally lax.

-Anne (Ogre) is more kinder, and treats everyone under her as her kin, and will often hold the same large Debauches as Black beard (the two once got together to hold a party and it wrecked a small islands economy). This doesn't stop her, however, from killing anyone who betrays her, as she is far more hurt to treachery than others, and as a result will often send her secret assassins, the Privateers, to deal with the traitor.

-Bartholomew (Halfling) is franker, and is a firm believer in the new era, an era when pirates stop dreaming, because it is a waste of time. He therefore is much more skeptical when judging character, making it very difficult for the other two to reason with him. He is, however, the oldest out of all of them, providing a wealth of experience into the fold.

Also, there is rumored to be that the Heroes who defeated the dragons, Jolly and Roger, are still alive and are now pirate king and queen on the lost Island of Caperioa. Only the three pirate lords know, but no-one has dared to ask them, after what happened to the last fool who did.

symbols: the most common symbol of the pirates is of course, the jolly roger.

however, different pirates make adaptations to their flag, however all have the skull and cross bones theme. examples include Calico Jack's flag:

edward teach's personal flag:

and Bartholomew robert's personal flag:

pirates main source of income involves exploring, trading and raiding.
Explorer pirates center around dreams and the persuing of them. this attracts probably the most of the wanna-be pirates, and they often make a reputation for themselves as exotic travelers, which goes down with the ladies extremely well. most of the pirates under Anne Bonny are Explorers
Trader pirates involve a complex system of smugglers, Fences, suppliers, and street sellers, but is by far more profitable than either exploring or raiding. Trader pirates know this is were the money will be in the future, when raiding is stopped and the world has been discovered. most of the pirates under Bart Roberts are Traders.
Raider pirates involve pillaging and stealing everything from coastal villages and communities, along with merchant vessels and their own kin. Raiders often have a sadistic streak to them, taking everything that they can get their hands on during these raids. most of the pirates under Edward teach are raiders.

And now for a biology lesson

Ogres and Halflings (or Grundian) are, in all sense of the word, cousins. They are so similar biologically, that it is almost impossible to know which one is which until you look a the peoples actual size. The main things that are in common with each other is their massive guts, which are not are not made of pure fat, but have a layer of muscle to grind down particularly solid foodstuffs. Their Bodies are often stockily built and their ability to withstand almost anything, even the smallest halfling can take a cannonball to the gut and still stand for long enough yell an insult at an enemy. They are often strong, able to lift objects double their size. Grundian legs are large and tireless, and an ogre can march for days on end. Grundian faces are human like, but their mouth has a large amount of teeth, from vicious canines to blunt molars. However, despite the mouth, and ogres face is kind and resolute. Their hair is often long and thick, making most fully grown ogres have mane of hair akin to a lions.
however, size difference between the two races are staggering, Ogres come somewhere between 9 to 14 feet for the absolutely huge, whilst halflings come 3 to 5 feet at most. Also, ogres are so physically large that they can easily move around with a halfling perched on their shoulder, and so the tradition of duel captains has become common practice, with one halfling and one ogre sharing the role as captain.

Hero: Captains

the Freebooter faction introduces something new to heroes 6, Dual heroes. Both Halflings and Ogres have a representative when it comes to deciding a hero.
Graphically speaking, the Captain is a huge ogre in full pirate captains outfit, a pair of handguns on a sash around their torso, a jolly roger painted on their belly, with eyepatch over their left eye and Huge cutlass in hand. one their shoulder stands a proud Halfling with a peg leg and a bandanna around their heads, with a large spell book on their back. (I'm using their because it is a unisex thing) When they attack, the ogre cleaves someone in two with the cutlass, and when they cast spells, the halfling performs the magic, with the ogre blasting magic gunpowder out of his handguns.

stats
offense: 2
defense: 1
Spellpower: 1
Knowledge: 1

Creatures

Lvl1: halfling slingshot -> Halfling Sharpshooter/ Halfling Marksman
Halflings are short, rotund, and possibly the biggest liars in the universe. They often are found on the ships, bragging about exploits, in between food and sleep, so most people take their so called bravery to be tall tales. however, Halflings never back down from a fight, and form the artillery, with sling shots and stones in hands, raining death upon the enemy, which is as close as to killing a dragon with one hand naked as their willing to get.

Lvl2: sea sheep rider-> sea sheep cavalry/ oceanic ram charger.
Halflings, even before they were on land, always rode sheep as men ride horses and dwarves ride bears. after the wizards drove them to the sea, halflings have had to make do with sea sheep, a strange hybrid that are part dolphin, part sheep (many jokes about wooly jumpers). Whilst they were not as fast as traditional cavalry, they are swift enough to carry their riders into battle, resilient enough to take damage, strong enough to give it out, and fast enough to run away.

lvl3: Ogre Deckhand-> Ogre buccaneer/ Ogre Privateer
Ogres often fill this position of Deckhand before becoming anything greater. Even from the smallest crews, most will have a number of deckhands to man cannons, board ships, maintain the day to day running of the ships, being bossed around by bo'suns and more important members. However, an Ogre Deckhand is still an Ogre, and in a fight, they are often hit people like a thunderstorm, armed with cutlasses and club, a step away from the flintlock weilding buccaneer or the ruthless Privateer in the Ogre career ladder.

lvl4: Halfling Kite -> Battle "Eagle"/ War "hawk"
When a few halflings used sail technology and made it into a contraption that enabled them to fly, most people were skeptical it would work. whoever, when it did, they were first amazed, and then excited, as their army lacked a way to take out aerial units. so halflings, armed with small gunpowder bombs, fly these kites on the air, droping bombs and diving at people, slicing them with cutlasses.

lvl5: Ogre Swashbuckler -> Ogre Mate/ Ogre Bo'sun
Swashbucklers are the higher levels in the chain of command for the pirates, often forming as elite troops and specialist positions in the crew, like cook, musician, shipwright and navigator. they are all held in high esteem amongst the crew, as almost no-one crosses them and remains in one piece and not feed to the sharks. The only people above the Swashbucklers and aren't captains are the Mates, who are the captains right hand, and the Bo'sun, who is in charge of ordering people about.

lvl6: Cannon -> "Shining knight" cannon/ Black izzy cannon
The Cannons, often used on ships, have now made their way onto land, with the help of halfling ingenuity, and one of the few units in the army controlled by a female halfling and moved by ogres. Launching a variety of objects, from cannonballs, to long iron lances, to cutlery, the cannon is a dangerous weapon to be faced against. some cannons, like the "Shining knight" cannon, launches iron lances and is incased in a protected shell, Whilst the "Black Izzy" cannon, named after the sorceress who enchants the cannonballs, can whisk away magic shields with one shot.

Lvl7: Sea sorceress-> Mistress of the waves/ Maiden of the Tides
Female ogres who are gifted with blue hair are often said to be the blessed of the sea gods and goddesses, and leave home at the age of ten to study to the Banyou islands to become sorceresses. The position of Sorceress is highly respected, and they command as much fear and awe as the captains. They ride on jets of water into battle, weilding magic of the waves, and bringing the tides of doom on those who fight the Freebooters.

Freebooter tactics: the freebooters have a number of Strong and resilient units to most forms of attack. this is a powerhouse faction, like dungeon, and will often find itself surrounded and pinned down, fighting to the last. However, some swift flyers, like the sea sorceress and the battle kites, and some decent shooters, like the cannon and the halfling slingshot, are able to keep many people in check. However, the faction only relies on 1 magic using creature, which is a high level one, so until then, the hero must learn a large amount of spells to keep the army bolstered and ready for combat.

Buildings- The Freebooter town is an enormous harbour, with several ships, of all sizes, in it. There is often sounds of partying, with pirate themed music in the background. some of the buildings are on ships, some are ships, some are on land, and a few are in the sea

Village hall-> town hall-> City hall-> Capitol.
Fort-> Citedal-> Castle
market place
resource silo
tavern
black smith
shipyard
magic guild 1-5

Dwellings
1. Halfling cabins -> Halfling Holes
2. sea sheep pen -> sea sheep docks
3. Ogre Frigate -> Ogre Sloop
4. Kite pier -> Kite launch pad
5. Swashbuckler ships -> Sabre ships
6. cannon works-> shipwrights
7. Sorceress coven-> Sorceress convent

special buildings
feasting halls (enables halfling racial)
Treasure Vault (get extra gold every week!)
Bombard cannons (enables ogre racial)
Oceans naval (Grail)

Freebooters first racial skill- Halfling: feast magic (yes, its back!)
Feast magic originated from Halflings gluttonous appetite and interest in the arcane. in the early years, Halflings used to worship gods and goddesses through the primitive arts of Feast magic. Not only were they able to master normal magic enough to teleport the ingredients to their hands, but also able to imbune their allies with its powers.

Ogres have tried to use feast magic, but it has never worked, for some strange reason, so only halflings ever learn Feast magic. Most who do quickly become captains.

feast magic spells

teir 1

heart gorger
the halfling eats the fresh heart of a dwarven mammoth. whilst enjoying the fresh and bloody meat, they imbunes their allies with the strength and furiousity of a charging mammoth.

Bone cruncher
the halfling shovels a small mountian of spines, skulls and ribs and crunches their way through. as the bones splitter, the feast master spits a vile curse at the enemy, so that their bones will shatter as the ones in his mouth have

sacrifice: 6 mana

direct damage spell
60+12*power 72+12*power 84+12*power 96+12*power.

teir 2

sacrifice: 4 mana

the selected unit's moral is subtracted by 3 and immediately is subject to fear (see hell chargers special)

Angel wings!
the feast master takes from their larder a pair of ripe, fresh angel wings. holding them up, the Feastmaster utters a pray to Slyath, before devouring them, bolstering his allies into the air

Troll guts
the feastmaster forces down the toxic intestines of a troll. the feastmaster transfers the power of the trolls to his compainions, healing them, but also forcing them to vomit the same terrible bile of the troll

sacrifice: 5 mana

the selected creature can regenerate. in addition, once the spell has been cast, the creature can vomit a single ranged attack at an enemy, dealing the same damage as the stone spikes spell, reducing their defence characteristic by -2

tier 4

thunderbelch
the feastmaster chomps there way through an entire elephant. with a moment of preparation, the feastmaster lets out a terrific belch that can be heard for miles around. the feastmaster directs it at a certain enemy, making them loose their concentration.

sacrifice: 7 mana

the target will lose its Initiative.

Freebooters second racial skill- Ogres: Bombardier
Halflings may have invented cannons, but ogres are the ones who use them to full effect. Positioned at towns, Ogres carry homing beacons for the specialist Bombard cannon operators to see and fire towards. although they take a while to set up, the Homing beacons offer a wide variety of choice of weapons, which are transported inside the cannonballs.

However, these weapons cost money and resources, and only one can be made at a time. Pirates are often advised not to use these things rashly, as each cannonball is unique, and to use it rashly in a campaign is risky and dangerous.

"Black" shell
costs: 2500 g
enchanted with the blessing of the sorceresses under Blackbeard, this cannon ball target area of 5x5.

90 damage

"Red" shell
costs: 2500 g
Dipped in the magical lake under Redbeard's control, this cannonball is destructive at its best.

188 damage

"White" shell
costs: 2500g
infused with anti-magical power, this cannonball is able to create a magical void, Stealing in total 30 mana from the creatures on the field and the hero.

66 damage

"Boxing glove"
costs: 2500g
originally created as a joke, this cannonball is a ticking time bomb in the middle of the battlefield, as it could go off in a turn or three turns

124 damage

"Keg shot"
costs: 2500g
an idea used to bring health restoring beer into the battlefield, which is so powerful it could floor a dwarf.

restores 30 health each time a freebooter creature defends were it has landed. does 30 damage first time for everyone else (they won't touch the stuff in future!)

"Nightmare" shell
costs: 2500g
No-one knows what the strange stuff in this cannonball is. some say it is the blood of the dragon Ba'al, whilst others say its powered demon bones. what ever it is, Something grips the enemy with total fear when the shell lands.

the enemy now have the cowardice special ability, and also lose -3 moral points. the Freebooters now have Frightful special.

"Kreig"
costs: 2500g
named war because of its ability to simply spew weapons onto the battlefield, pinning the enemy down. when an enemy is hit, the stack is pinned down and unable to move for two turns.

98 damage

Heroes:

Calico jack and mary reed (campaign heroes)
Jack and mary have been sent by Anne to assassinate the duo Burgess and Lafitte before they reveal the Freebooters plans to the empire of man. Calico was the best ogre warrior, whilst Mary Reed was the best halfling mage under the Red flag, and both are willing to hunt Burgess and Lafitte until the ends of vearth to find them and slay them.

Jean Burgess and Samuel Lafitte (Campaign heroes)
two hunted pirates who are trying to delivers secret plans for a war vessel that is to ship the freebooters most dangerous weapon into battle to the human empire. No-one knows about this vessel, for its contents are live dragon eggs of the freebooters sealed dragon, Ba'al, and to be used as cannon balls on the enemy. if another dragon is hatched, it will bring untold devastation on the world of Vearth.

Barbarossa and "Sparrow" (Campaign heroes)
these two were the ones who created the plans that Jean Burgess and Sameul Lafitte are transporting. Hired by two mysterious figures, Barbarossa and Sparrow were charged with creating a vessel in order to use these cannonball dragon eggs.

Alvida and Samuel bellamy (Campaign heroes)
a romantic couple of aspiring pirates, who help Jack and Mary on their adventures.

Bartholomew (Campaign hero)
Jack and mary unfortunately wade into Bartholomew's territory. Bartholomew is strict on the regulation of pirates into his territory, and Jack and Mary's rashness to complete their mission means that Bartholomew begins to go to war with Anne and Teach.

Anne (Campaign hero)
Anne heads up the new offensive against Both Bartholomew when she finds out of Blackbeards treachery and Bartholomew's willingness to house the traitors. the last scene in the campaign is a three way battle between the three on their flag ships.

Teach (Campaign hero)
Burgess and Lafitte's lord, Teach was the one who funded for their escape, as he believed that they should warn an old friend if they must, even if it was from the empire of man.

a lot more is to come

Where is this new trend of putting halflings and ogres together coming from? It's already the second entry with this combination...

Hm... what about buccaneer as faction name instead of freebooter? I think it sounds more like pirates and carribean flair. Freebooters reminds me more of letter of marques, Sir Francis Drake and the english crown. But maybe that is just me.

As I basically love the idea of such an pirates faction, honestly I'm not keen on using historic pirates names in the fantasy setting of Ashan in Heroes 5. Seems so uncreative. Your Shrek and Archmage's book jokes are way better than this.

no, they are not, they just want to be free to do what they want to do. if that includes some pillaging once in a while, then thats fine.

the Halfling on the ogres shoulder is justs as much a captain as the ogre is, they only sit then because its the most practical place to sit and the other shoulder is the ogres sword swinging shoulder.

I like the dual hero idea a lot.

Ice bolt/Circle of Winter don't make good creature-spells in their current form, as they are so spellpower-independent that the damage difference between one caster and five casters is fairly negligible. But of course this could be changed for H6.
