So here are some picks from what I've watched in the last few years that I think are worth a highlight in no particular order. There are others like Girls und Panzer, 91 Days, for example, which are very much worth a watch for multiple reasons but these are the ones that really stood out to me as not only good but special.

Tetsuwan Birdy Decode: The Cipher
Alt title: Tetsuwan Birdy Decode: Between You and Me

was really good but I'm not quite sure how much of that's going to be lost if you aren't familiar with the background. The whole action side is not the point here though so probably nothing too important, just some humour.

English voice acting is very good for this but Shion has a specific way of speaking and acting in Japanese that isn't replicable in English so you're going to lose that. Some of the scenes are definitely better in English though. And they redid the Song scene in English, huge respect for that.
Of course the right option is to watch it twice ^^

The art is really good, there are some stunningly good scenes and if you like animation it's worth paying attention to the specific way they do some things. Especially the poses and transitions between them are superb. It's also worth noting that instead of using CG in-between frames to smooth out the transitions they stuck with using at most one frame between the key-frames 99% of the time which allows them to emphasize movement at other times. It makes some of the already impressive scenes stand out even more.

If you have trouble finding this it's also aired as the 13th episode of the second season of Birdy the Mighty Decode.

Shelter

Where have you been living if you haven't seen this? Anyway, just click the link and do so. It's a splendid experience all around. Simply beautiful. 10/10

Castlevania

When Netflix realised they could order their own series the world doubted them at first. Now when they've realised they can order their own cartoon series the world thanks them. Best stuff on TV in years. The future of the series does not look as great, the ending suggested a more bland next season but here's hoping it keeps with the established athmosphere and doesn't try to go mainstream.

It's dark and gritty without becoming heavy. There is humour(sometimes a bit black) that blends in naturally. The characters are royally broken and lovable. It is a case of "the hero they need but don't deserve."

As a bonus, it's about Castlevania.

Fune Wo Amu

It's a series about making a dictionary, if that doesn't sound interesting to you, I can't help you, please consult your doctor for medical help.

The annoying commercial break tidbits are the only thing I can fault it for. If the biggest complain about a show is how they do commercial breaks, that should tell you all you really need to know about it.

Little Witch Academia

There are two movies and a series of this. They're all equally brilliant. I am not sure how to best describe this. It's a series for kids, clearly but it is so, so good.

It's also filled with references and homages to classics. Starting with the biggest on of them all, Disney, really piling on the expectations. Those, it delivers and more. It simply does everything right.

BLAME!

Did I mention Netflix does their own anime now? And they started with BLAME! The manga that anyone who's ever read it thought would never get animated. Largely because of the amazingly intricate dark background art and about three lines of conversation in twenty volumes.

The backgrounds in this are similarly amazing but not quite as dark to facilitate the viewers having less time to take them in. Sadly they decided to go with CGI characters/action, similar to the style used in Knights of Sidonia. Not a fan.

Similarly they picked the most conversation heavy story arc and told it from the perspective of the humans our main encounters. I think that was a good choice for introducing people to this world. They didn't just leave it at that though, they went ahead and reshaped it quite a bit. I have mixed feelings about that. On one hand, it makes for a decent film but on the other, it feels very different than the original story does.

Understanding that the original BLAME! is a piece of art that would never sell to the larger audience I'm content we even got this and it's definitely worth a watch regardless.

There is a six episode webshort series about this as well from 2003, that's more akin to the manga in spirit.

Non Non Biyori

When you feel like you need to chill there is nothing better to release your tensions. Opening sequence of the first episode already sets the tone with it's beautiful scenery and relaxing music. Slowly the focus shifts from the background to the characters and we find out where that off key recorder are coming from.

This is what the series is about, beautiful scenery with great atmosphere. Really, what more could one need or want?

GATE

When five minutes into an episode you know exactly what the main character does for a living without being told or shown because of your real life knowledge of a subject, you know you're in for a good ride. Then when ten episodes later the others are clued in you just nod your head, brilliant work.

In the case of GATE, the original webnovel is pretty hardcore realism, this got toned down for the paper release, which got toned down for the comic release, which got even further censored for the TV release so the director had quite the puzzle to solve on how to re-create the series. He didn't try to copy any of the previous releases nor did he try to make it something it wasn't but managed to find the parts that would be acceptable and emphasized those while staying true to the original story and characters. An achievement worth raising your hat for.

If you liked the character interaction you should check out the novels, especially Rory/Itami has some pretty epic moments in there.

PS. I wouldn't dare to try and do a breakdown of the comics I've read, I'd be stuck here all day. Instead just have a linky to my Anime-Planet profile.

There's also Essentially Joonas and Joonas on a Timeline if you wish to delve into my head.

LMAO.

Read the first and most upvoted review on MAL, the 1/10 one that starts with "This might be one of the worst things I have ever watched."

EDIT: Final arc of ReLIFE just got out. I remember the anime was pretty good, I'll have to watch it again.

EDIT: Citrus ended and all I can say is that I enjoyed it, despite lacking a more serious punch. Not as dramatic as I imagined it would be.
Mahoutsukai no Yome as well. Without a doubt one of the better ones. I've been impressed from start to finish. Beautiful is the first word that comes to mind when I think of it.
Koi wa Ameagari no You ni is about to fold with its last episode next week. Picked it up halfway without any expectations and it turned out be fairly good.
And then the big takeaway from the season which I believe is Violet Evergarden. Without a doubt one of the most fantastic animes that I've ever seen. Only 3 episodes left and I'm excited for each and every one of them. I can wholeheartedly recommend this anime to anyone.

I was also recommended Avatar: The Last Airbender and gave the first season a watch. It was good, I really liked it and will probably watch the rest of it soon.

Also, next season is packed with great titles. Nanatsu no Taizai: Imashime no Fukkatsu ongoing for a lot more episodes. Then starting April, Steins;Gate 0, Boku no Hero Academia 3rd Season, even Full Metal Panic! Invisible Victory which I never imagined I'd see continued. And I guess more coming along, hopefully good ones. Looking forward to it.

EDIT: I almost forgot about Karakai Jouzu no Tagaki-san which ended today. It was lighthearted and fun romance with an open ending, reason why I'd like a second season.

And finally, Dragon Ball Super concluded with episode 131. It was quite a ride and I'll remember the series fondly. Didn't really top DBZ though.

Finally watched the first part of fate, heaven's feel. As expected, it has excellent visuals, animation and atmosphere. Despite that route going in a wildly different direction, there is some overlapping story which thankfully gets rather fast-forwarded even if the beginning is a bit slow. It is a tricky balance, keeping the parts that you need for the sake of narrative and skipping parts that you can assume that the audience knows anyway. Thankfully, ufotable assumes that you have seen the previous films and the remaining familiar scenes/quotes are done in a different way so I'm mostly satisfied. Also, more hints are dropped and more questions are raised by the characters, which offers a better insight on the story. A sense of mystery is maintained throughout and the more you see, the more questions you get. Side characters get more spotlight and by the end of the film you can tell that the best is yet to come. This film is a warmup and it takes its time setting up the pieces before it starts tearing them down.

Violet Evergarden was an excellent watch. The music, the visuals, the emotions, it is a work of art

Currently watching Hinamatsuri and so far it is hilarious.

So wait, Heaven's feel is a three part movie instead of a series?

Been out of anime for like 6 months now (besides spice and wolf/black lagoon and berserk all which I rewatched since i have em downloaded, speaking of which really need to catch up with berserk manga, and carry on spice and wolf light novels, all that merchant stuff makes so much more sense when it's written down ^_^')

Spice & Wolf Gets VR Anime in Early 2019!

The television anime's voice actors Ami Koshimizu (Holo) and Jun Fukuyama (Kraft Lawrence) are returning and the anime will be viewable on PC without a VR headset.

I don't give a crap about the VR but more spice and wolf is welcome

Quick rundown of what I've been watching lately.

Nanatsu no Taizai: Imashime no Fukkatsu, I enjoyed it more than the first season, can relate to what Omega said about Escanor. Looking forward to it resuming.
Hinamatsuri, one of the best comedies of the season, also hits the feels sometimes. Ending hints at a possible continuation.
Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii, the otaku stereotyping they pulled off felt exaggerated sometimes (unless it was actually accurate and I just can't believe it), though it was a fun, casual entry.
Net-juu no Susume, meet your MMO sweetheart IRL. Gave the impression it was going to develop on more characters, but probably dropped midway. Could've been better.
Sora yori mo Tooi Basho, only halfway through and I get this feeling it's going to be good. Got that Made in Abyss vibe, well, just somewhat. I'm not expecting people to die in a graphic way, but maybe I'll be surprised.

Currently following:

Steins;Gate 0, the superior anime series I could recommend to anyone.
Boku no Hero Academia 3rd Season, I dig it and can get behind the hype, glad it's still ongoing.
Shingeki no Kyojin Season 3, started off in force and I like it, hopefully it's better than season 2. Please let it be 24 episodes if it is.
Overlord III, another season of Overlord this early? Yes please. Although I would prefer it if they gave some screentime to other empires instead of focusing on Ainz and his minions all the time.
Joshiochi!: 2-kai kara Onnanoko ga... Futtekita!?, I've no idea.

EDIT: Forgot to mention Inuyashiki as one of the early ones, was great in so many ways. Bang! Bang! Atatatatatata! Oh Kami-sama! Kami-samaaaa!

Also..

I'm liking where shingeki is heading. I miss the good old titan slashing but the story has gotten interesting. That opening needs more carebears and pink unicorns though Seriously, after the first three epics it is hard to stomach.

Started Jojo's bizarre adventure but it feels too shonen. Should have watched it younger, I can barely stand the constant screaming, exposition lines and dramatic expressions. Dio is fun though ^^

Lol too late, removed! Something witty has also uploaded it on twitch but it takes ages to load..

I watched anohana: the flower we saw that day and it was beautiful, emotional and depressing I like childhood stories but adding a literal ghost of the past and a broken fellowship with many things left unsaid? Just had to check it out. A few things could have been handled better but a solid watch nonetheless.

Konosuba is brilliant. It's Isekai done right. The comedy is just a plus.

There are a few Josei focused Isekais that come close but none of those have been animated. Yet anyhow.

We actually had a 4-player NWN playthrough, one guy wanted to be the thief so me and the other two hatched a plan. One was a full con pala with no strength, one a full int wizard with no con, I played a water cleric with low intelligence...

We're all in teamspeak, then when the first fight comes my friend has the full chant on tap when leapinto the fray for the first time, perfectly synced with an empowered fireball in-game. Of course she'd refuse to cast any more before resting.

From that point on, except for special cases, this would do.

Proper dedication, and epic fun.

Tensei snowara Slime Datta Ken - my fav series of Fall season. Love so-called kingdom building anime (is that even a genre, I was never sure), which are rare, and this one seems to be one of those. Yeah, protagonist is OP (but who doesn't enjoy an OP protagonist?), but he's a decent huma...er...slime being. Side characters are pretty likable, but I mostly like the fact that the series is nicely done (battle animations for instance).

Goblin Slayer was supposed to be good (I enjoy the manga), but the first trailer made me skeptic. Unfortunately my hunch was on point and it's a really mediocore adaptation: looks very cheap. Didn't hold it from being the most popular anime in USA though... West is sucker for fantasy anime.

Oh and, not actually an anime, but Castlevania season 2 was good.

Konosuba is just great ^^

Watched a few slime episodes and dropped. Too silly.

Goblin slayer has some ups and downs balancing the gore and horror with comic relief. Whether the season turns out good will depend on whether they skipped a major arc or moved it later for the finale. It looks a bit cheap but I don't mind that.

Forgot to say that I was eventually disappointed by steins gate 0. Some parts were really wtf and it generally felt like fanfiction. Had its moments but overall could not compare to the original.

Watched blood lad and while it didn't look like much, it improved. It's a funny series. Not on hinamatsuri's level but decent enough.

Currently watching Eden of the East and it's looking pretty good.

I’m not a bad slime, you know?

It’s entertaining but I was let down they didn’t have the courage to do first episode completely blind, only showing what he touched, that was a major bummer.

It’s decent entertainment though and I really enjoyed the VA change for the main character. I’m just sad it isn’t all it could have been.

They’re going awfully slow, with this pace we won’t even reach the main part of Shizu’s story before this season ends(24 eps btw!)

Castlevania season 2 was boring, stupid and lame. Not worth a watch.
Season one was best thing on tv for years but like I predicted from the ending, season two went full retard and forgot everything that made the first great.

If you watch only one series this season, it should be Yagate Kimi ni Naru. The manga is beautiful and the anime is fantastic. It’s a drama centered around a broken girl and her chuuni junior about how to come to terms with reality.

So slime worth checking more than 2-3 eps?

Castlevania 2 did fine with the main trio, it's dracula's camp that could have used a common sense boost. If we had more glorious slaughter like ep 7 and less backstabbing politics it'd be a lot better.
