Arslan senki is amazing, I wish it had gotten more seasons. Vinland saga has some brilliant characters and the adaptation was pretty good.

Meanwhile dorohedoro descends into more madness, such a likable series. Its only issue is that combat looks and feels so much better in the manga.

Dororo was good, especially the first part of the series. The premise is simple and appealing but it has a lot more to it than that. I love the conflict and destruction that comes as the protagonist comes closer to his goal. Or gaining his senses for the first time, wish they'd expanded on that. This is a series that would have benefited from more episodes to flesh out things more, smoothen the plot transition, explain character motivations and the like. Sometimes it feels it could have used more emotional impact, others it just hits you. With some more effort, time and resources it could have been so much better.

I think that was made on purpose. But if you'll follow the manga (or if they decide to make more seasons) you'll see that MC will go in an unexpected (?) direction...

I wonder how much Spring season will be hit by coronovarius. It was looking very good but they already moved Re: Zero 2 which was a big gut-punch for me. Some other series might also get delays because in many cases the animators/studios are working day-to-day on finishing them as the season rolls out...

Natsuki Subaru's transformation from zero to hero is probably one of the most satysfying things I've seen in anime... the feeling is the same (or even greater actually) after watching it again with the Directors Cut. It's so cool that a guy who faces so much trauma, makes so many mistakes, and literally starts to hate himself because of it while being at his lowest, is approached with affection and kindness when he needs it the most (though it is the effect of his previous actions) and starts to belive in himself. And it's not a sudden transformation, he gets to this point after so many false steps (though we need to be honest, people don't get second chances the way he does). I see many things I didn't notice on my first watch, and it all comes together so nicely, you can even see some niuances in the dialogues themselves if you watch carefully. This series is truly great, here's hoping they won't waste it in season 2.

Though I must say I'm pretty disappointed with the DC, nothing new was added so far, yet they had their chances. At this point my guess is that they will change the ending a bit, or add some new material in preperation for S2.

Btw, Brand New Animal releases on 21st of March, furry fans rejoice

Maquia was one of the most gorgeous and sad films I have seen. Amazing detail has been put into the art, animation, atmosphere, lighting - every frame looks like a painting. There is some occasional jarring cgi but the rest is amazingly beautiful. Unsurprisingly, the director also turned out to be the author of anohana. Those who have seen it, you know what you are in for ^^

Aw right! Made in abyss movie is out, Bondrewd arc

Will watch Maquia, definately. I remember seeing a trailer once and was interested, but forgot about it.

Today I think they will screen the last episode of the Director's Cut of Re: Zero. I wonder if they finally add some new material, because what was the point of the whole DC if they didn't add any changes? People buy Blu-rays in Japan, so they did see this enhanced version already, and I doubt there are many people who don't know this anime...

Probably hype-building for the second season. Saw some comments pointing out that there is almost nothing new so I gave it a pass.

I watched kiznaiver, I liked the concept of literally connecting people through their wounds. Nice short emotional series, if not quite exceptional. Has some good moments though at times the delivery is off.

Land of the lustrous was very nice. The visuals stand out and it makes good use of 3D animation which is why I heard of it in the first place but it has a pretty interesting story too. I mean.. humanoid gems being invaded by lunar buddhists that want them for decoration purposes! But there is apparently reason behind the trippiness and the music works well too. It's a good all around combination.
Beware of cliffhanger ending though :/

First of all, I blame Elvin.

Second of all, I watched Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien, also known as Rumbling Hearts for us English speaking plebs.

For those who don't know, it actually started as a visual novel videogame, released in 2001 for PS2/PC/Xbox. Sadly, it was only released in the NTSC-J region, which means it's only in Japanese. There's a remaster announced (in 2019) that should hit popular platforms like PSN or Steam, but the company is known for slacking, so maybe we'll play it in 2030.

Either way... I am a huge sucker for romantic drama, and the more nostalgic it is, the better. So I was excited about this one. While the first two episodes are hard to watch sometimes (really cringy dialogue, overly "Japanised" society), it quickly picks up and gets better. The art looks lovely, the animation is lacking, and much like many anime with low budget, they use stills instead of animation when there's too much things to animate at the same time, ie. cheering crowd.

But the characters are really pleasant to look at, especially the girls, so it didn't bother me that much.

I dubbed the girls "Red" and "Blue" since I couldn't make any sense of their dubbed names in the first episode (the English snowization) and it kinda stuck. Since I'm not going to spoil the story, all I can say is that Rumbling Hearts is a rather uneven anime, with some very high points and some overreacted/overly dramatic/cringy scenes at the same time. But still really worth watching because it's actually believable in most part. Except the main character, which I constantly wanted to beat up, strangle, drown, etc. Seriously, this guy can go eat a.. umm.. sausage. He must have a 10 inch penis made of 24k gold, since the girls seem to love him despite the fact he mostly responds in "Uh Huh", stares at people blankly and refuses to show any emotion at all most of the time. I even concluded he must be a sociopath, or mentally retarded. Or both.

The girls, on the other hand, are a joy to watch. While the overdone sweetness of early episodes Red is cringy AF, she does get better in the other part of the show (though she remains sweet to the point of teeth rotting automatically at her sight). Blue is more like a human being, and actually got a ridiculous amount of hate on the internet for what she did. I mostly felt sorry for her. She seemed like a really nice person the majority of time that just got ignored and constantly passive-aggressively abused by her boyfriend. It also doesn't help that she kicks my sexuality into an overdrive. Something about her hair/eye color and the way she's drawn clicks with something in my skull can't help it!

Before it gets too creepy, all I can say is that the ending is really lovely, and even though I expected something of entirely different tone (and would prefer an entirely different tone, more consistent with the rest), the two scenes (about the fairy tale and the little book at the end) are honestly totally worth it and I can forgive the tonal shift I did not appreciate that much. Many people expected a different outcome, but I think that out of two possible endings from the video game, they chose the one that is just more logical and sound. It's what I would have done as well, being in shoes of the MC. Though I'd probably jump of a cliff because I could not stand me being one of the biggest douchebags in anime history.

I really like the opening, and I love the outro. Musically, there's a lot of beautiful piano in the background, which I really appreciate.

Worth watching? Sure. Don't expect to be completely blown away, but it's a time worth spending.

Blue <3

And yes, I blame Elvin for that.

I randomly came across oath under snow, which is an unexpectedly awesome fate movie on an alternate reality holy grail war. Except Shiro is more human and archer-like badass! This story is more character focused though there are some good action pieces. Sadly, most of the servant fights are presented in montage style but seeing them taken down with ruthless efficiency is damn satisfying.

Things you should know before watching:
- This is a fate/kaleid prequel but you need to have watched at least unlimited blade works and heaven's feel since the protagonist is Shiro and there are also returning characters from stay night. You may not know the kaleid chars or story but I personally didn't care.
- This holy grail war does not summon heroic servants, it lets masters 'semi-transform' and borrow their powers.
- This is a deconsctruction of Shiro as we knew him. What if he was not fighting for an ideal? What if he felt he had lost everyone important to him? What if he wasn't annoying?

Spring season is actually less interesting then I originally thought and it's not even the fault of Re: Zero 2 being moved to summer. So far worth mentioning:
- Gleipnir - yeah, teen angst and fanservice, but it's technically solid and heavy. Fights are cool. Should be a fun ride.
- Appare-Ranman! - Wacky Racers in America made by Japanese. What's not to like?
- Hachi-nan tte - another isekai with OP MC, but something tells me this one is a step above the usual sort.
- Tower of God - didn't know the original Korean webcomic before but heard it's a phenomenon. Some interesting characters and concepts, plus it has nice atmoshpere and soundtrack. It's already pretty interesting and I read somewhere that it shifts to even higher gear a few chapters further in
- Arte - an original and likable anime about a 15 year old girl in 16th century Florence who wants to be a painter (which was really hard for females at that time). A bit naive and I just can't stand people bowing like Japanese in that time, age and culture, but so far it's pretty symphatetic.

Oh and I watched Maquia - beautiful, sad and "brings-a-tear-to-your-eye" fantasy that looks like a more serious Bravely Default game And I like it's pretty compact from start to finish and feels completed and satysfying.

Yeah, a "step above" doesn't mean it's particularly good or anything, just not your insta-drop material like Infinite Dendrogram.

Damn more and more anime are getting postponed by Corona. A bit more and there will be nothing to watch this season Will have to probably take a look on some of the older, omitted series.

EDIT: Yeah, I know Pokemon isn't exactly best what anime has to offer, but the miniseries they make form time to time... they are very good.

Twilight Wings miniseries (4 out of 7 planned episodes are out so far).

One of the newer manga chapters gives a new meaning to coming in inside Shuuchi I mean physically entering him by someone, don't get too many ideas

But yeah, Gleipnir is pretty amusing and one of the more technicaly decently made animes of this season, even if it's a bit on the teenage angst and sexuality side...

I also watched BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense, one of the animes I omitted last season which was a bad decision on my side as I watched Infinite Dendrogarm instead which was s*it.

BOFURI on the other hand was pretty enjoyable: it presents MMO as a game (without pathos) and neatly shows a concept of how a game of this type can be exploited. One of the better isekai-ish animes I watched recently.

Picked up Yesterday wo Utatte and it got me hooked (it's currently ongoing).

I mean, I'm not a romance/slice of life guy, but the mundaness of this anime gets to me. It is pretty supersticial how a self proclaimed "loafer" attracts three woman to him (so far), but other then that this whole "life sucks" vibe of the anime gets to me. It's about normal people who didn't make it "big", and either live in the past or don't have a particular destination in mind... it's not a downer or anything, and it's not "this good": the story is simply about everyday people and that is fine. It's strange actually: I like watching anime because of it's other-wordlyness, but sometimes the simpliest of stories get me going for them.

Uh, yea. So.. it's been a while since I last "updated" my anime escapades on this thread (reason why I'll go out of my way to compile an actual list on MAL one of these days), so going off the top of my head:

Durarara all seasons, kept up the pace well with all the madness happening, it was a good anime, would give it an 8/10.

Violet Evergarden Gaiden: Eien to Jidou Shuki Ningyou, basically the movie that followed the season, very good in its own right. It's hard to not get captivated by the series, beautiful visuals, touching stories, tearjerker moments and all. 9/10

Tenki no Ko, another one of Shinkai Makoto's signature movies. This one though... I mean, it's kinda getting predictable at this point. Great visuals, check. Love story, check. Some action/drama, check. Character design similar to any of the others in past movies, check. Police being a bunch of wusses, check. It didn't surpass Kimi no Na wa, even though it was fairly good. But yea, I'm not thrilled if this same "successful" recipe going to be served again and again and again. 8/10

Kono Oto Tomare! 2nd Season, I knew from the first season that the series was going to be good. I started paying more attention to genres outside my usual "comfort zone" and I have to say that after giving a shot to Carole and Tuesday and this one... For sure the music genre has can have a pull on me. The piece they played during the tournament was like, so good man, blissful. Sasuga Nihon and their national instrument, the Koto. 8.5/10

High Score Girl II, my goodness things got... very steamy at some point, but also sidetracked I fell? Was arcade games just a medium for the action and relationships between the characters? I mean, yea, but I feel the actual games were more emphasized in the first season. And speaking of season, boy does this one deserve a 3rd one, need that wholesome conclusion yo! 8/10

Boku no Hero Academia 4th Season, this really is the shonen of our days, isn't it? But it's great! Was browsing a streamer tonight and she held this opinion that shonen animes are the ones "normies" watch. She said normies as in some derogatory way (are there people still doing this today? Weren't we over the "normie" tag long ago?) and listed Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, and basically the popular ones at their time. And I kinda got where she was going with it, but then you really have absolute masterpieces like Hunter X Hunter and even Hero Academia which is great, and... doesn't that make you reassess your opinion? It's strange. I mean, I've had moments when I felt completely over shonen and avoided popular titles, but never felt they were without merit or labelled them. Besides, by that metric, aren't all these isekai nowadays falling in the same basket? And there's some really bad ones... But anyway, Hero Academia is still going strong and I really enjoy it. The development of Midoriya feels so slow though, by the time he'll do something significant they'd have thrown another 100 episodes at the series. Right now it feels as if we've seen the era of All Might end and got stuck in this transition to the Deku era. 8.5/10

Dr. Stone, which is, to me, the letdown of the season. They had a great setting after a world disaster, a good idea with relaunching technology and discovering what happened, and they ruined all of it by pushing an irrelevant feud as the focus of the story. It. Was. Pure. Trash. There are also so many unbelievable, unscientific things that happened throughout the story that the initial idea and its pretenses became a joke. How in the world did 4 space scientists survive to then return to Earth and do literally NOTHING for their entire lifetime. You'd guess people with enough smarts and education to make it to space would find at least some methods to contribute to the story? Instead, we got this stupid melodramatic take where the father puts all his hope in his son to figure it out, which by the way is stone like all the rest. But he believed, and left him a message, carried to him by a tribe people with their 100 stories and 3700 years of inbreeding, and nothing but inbreeding in that time, not one ounce of technological advancement beyond stone age. But lo and behold, we need to fight the high schooler that killed a lion barehanded and his whole empire of might, all with our army of science and stuff! Terrible. 7/10 simply for the showcase of some good experiments and understanding of technology, plot-wise and character-wise a complete letdown.

Vinland Saga, the winner of the season. Good story, complex characters and their development. Some cool, memorable moments. Torfinn literally screaming "I NEED A REDEMPTION ARC" every episode, there's no way he's not irritated, angry, stubborn, annoying and stupid all the time without an ultimate goal. Askeladd stealing the show with his tragic development. Canute and the priest losing their faith was a bad undertone to me personally, but hailed by others. 9/10
