Ok, time for a big one, and in three parts, parts 1 and 2 are the review of the manga, third is a rant about dubbing.

One Piece- the piratical adventure of Manga, Anime and dubbing problems.

when I first came across One piece, I was in Waterstone's bookshop, looking around for various tips on how to draw, I came across Volume one of One piece, sat down with a cup of coffee, and began to read. I generally thought it was a fairly bog-standard manga, with a definately lack of any depth, and decided to look further into it. I generally thought it looked interesting, the only real gripe I had at the time was the cartoonish nature of the art, but on the other hand I thought there was only one way to draw manga. when i went online to look at its wikipedia entry, however, i was bombarded by the facts about the characters, story arcs, cool powers, battles, which all looked incredibly cool! I went onto various websites to find the manga, sat down, and began to read further.

One thing I must say about One piece is that its like Rock music, or Marmite, You either love it or can't stand it, and the clinching factor over this decision is if you are a Narutard or not (Narutard= slang for naruto fans). What One piece initically lacks in depth, it more than makes up for in laugh-out loud moments, wonderfully fun characters, and truly insane situations. As you can probably guess, this reviewer is a One Piece fan!

Characters first. The main character is Monkey D. "Strawhat" Luffy, a Seventeen year-old boy who is idiotic, gluttonous, Couragous, selfless and has a body made out of rubber and an inability to swim. His dream is to find one piece and become king of the pirates. One of the things that makes him so compelling because he has a incredibly knack for getting into comical situations and reacts very idiotically, like when he gets grabbed by a large bird by the head and taken to the next island, or when he is on a winter island and it takes him thirty seconds to realize he is cold. Another this that also makes him compelling is that he is the one who often tells everyone else to move forward to the next adventure, to go the extra mile, and often damages himself incredibly through doing it, which include being posioned, shot, stabbed, sliced, pummeled, electrified, frozen, eaten, and nutted, and yet he still manages to survive and defeat the bad guy.

His first mate is Ronanoa Zoro, a green haired, dangerous, easily lost, lazy, honourable swordsman who uses three katana's, with one in his mouth. His dream is to become the worlds greatest swordsman. He is by far one of the coolest characters in the series, as he is able to take on hundreds of enemies, after being wounded to the point of near death, and still be able to stand. So far he fought the One piece worlds greatest swordsman and lost, He has also have to fought against a humaniod octopus with six swords, a man who can morph his body into blades and a samurai from the grave. He is such a compelling character because of his utterly human habits of falling asleep and getting lost, which contradicts to his superhuman levels of strength and endurance.

The Navigator Nami, an orange haired, Money grabbing, flirtatious, control freak who is looking after her own skin, has a dream to create a map of the one piece worlds, as a lot of it is uncharted. She is very capable of achieving this dream, because, Whilst she might not be on the same level of physical power as Zoro or Luffy, she is a stronger female character than most manga series. Whilst she might have the same figure as Ohrime from Bleach and the same flirtatious nature as Lucy from Fairytail, but she has a magic staff that controls the weather, and it doesn't matter who you are or what you have, if you are compared to a ginger girl with the ability to control the weather, you are going to loose badly!

Ussop, the inidental black guy of the group, is probably the most human character out of all of the strawhat pirates. There is alot to like about his human person, despite the fact he lies, tricks, retreats and has an overinflated oppinion of himself, Because he is one of the few Members of the crew who is able to get sympathy. He know's he is the weakest member of the crew, and so tries extra hard to get his dream of becoming a great warrior of the seas realised, to go so far as developing a split personality, the King of Snipers.

Sanji the cook, with Blond emo fringe, a lecherous personality, an ability to cook anything and a fighting style using only his legs, brings an element of sauve to the straw hat pirates. Whilst Zoro fights the swordsmen, Sanji fights the martial artists, and has an impressive array of kicks to go with it, and with a dream to find a mystical ocean, he needs it. The thing that Sanji has is the fact that he is a role-model, the fact that he is courageous, chivalrous, can cook, cunnings and classy. Those C words sum him up completely.

Tony Tony Chopper is one of the oddest members out of the group. He is a doctor, and also a reindeer. Let me go over that again, He is a reindeer who can walk, talk and change his shape, fight, and stitch people up when they have been beaten up, wants to find a cure for all diseases and is undeniably cute. definitely one of the most original characters in any Manga series.

Nico Robin, The strawhats limb replicating, adult, slightly gothic, archeologist (?). She probably brought the group the most trouble, and has such a troubled past thats its impossible not to feel sorry for her (How would you feel if your entire Island was bombed by a paranoid government?), and has the most dangerous of all the strawhats goals, to study a part of history erased by the paranoid government. However, she often is the one who is the most practical and the most intelligent, whilst everyone else is running around like gibbering loons.

Franky the shipwright is another character who you just go "Huh?" at. He is a cyborg with speedo's and an ace-ventura hairdo, gets angry, becomes sad, plays the guitar, is able to blast people away with an air valve, dreams of building a boat that could conquer the seas, and has a habit of doing unintentional pervert things, all at the age of 34! he is the ultimate represenation of a big kid, and its a joy to see him in action.

The most recent member, Brook, the Gentlemanly, Afro wearing, humming, skeletal musician, is another good character to see. A fencing swordsman, he is much quicker than most of the crew, and uses this to get other members around the place. His dream is the see an old friend again, and to give him the dying message of his former crew (that is a very touching bit to see.)

to be continued.

One piece review continued

One piece manages to achieve some things with its other characters, besides the protagonists, and that is make them balanced. You have your wise friends, for example Professor clover, Crocus the watchman and the sky knight Gan fall, who provide information about the one piece world, and you have your friends who tag along, like luffy's brother Ace, Zoro's former band Yosaku and Johnny, and the errant princess Vivi with here pet duck Carue, and you have the characters mentors and personal friends and family, including Pirate lord Red-haired shanks, The pirate peg-leg Chef Zeff, The Giant Jaguar D. Saul, The Merman Shipwright Tom and many others. This wide variety of characters provides us with much needed information about this strange world, and they are so human that you feel so attached to them, and if they die it is a true tragedy.

Also, One piece is not short of villians, but they have a tendency to slip down into two categories, comedic and Serious, although some do bridge it some what. Comedic villians are often people who are used to break up the action, and provide us with laughs and fun, Like buggy the  leprous clown, Wapol the ever hungry ex-king, and the Tranvestite bounty hunter Mr 2 bon kurei, the latter helping the strawhats to escape from the marines.

Like Bleach, there is always a stock antagonist for Eiichiro Oda (the creator) to fall back on if he runs out of villains (which I doubt he would) and those are the Marines and the World Government. However, unlike the Hollows in bleach, The Marines and the World Government are represented by two factors, Moral justice and Absolute justice, the two sides being characterized by Captain Smoker (who can transform himself into smoke via a devil fruit) for moral justice, and the Buster call ("a nightmare form of concentrated arson") Absolute.

For Serious villains, One Piece can produce some of the best, i feel. Everyone from the devious Sir Crocodile and his revolutionary plans to take over Vivi's kingdom, to the self-proclaimed God Eneru who can control lightning and capable of destroying an Island, to the fascist merman Arlong whose entire focus is to dominate Nami's home town, to the ruthless CP9, the world governments assassination unit who are out to kill anyone how opposes the world government, To the Omnious Marshall D. Teach, or Blackbeard, who is always at the back of peoples minds. This makes a Variety, and brings a nice change, rather than a simple case of begin evil ninja's or evil hollows.

As for setting, the one piece world is truly fantastic. Oda has done a marvelous job in using themes and stories that aren't just Japanese (which you find with so many Manga's). He's used different cities and cultures from around the world in the story, From Florence and venice, to the American indians, and the idea of Sea monsters (although some are slightly more cuddly than the Kraken). He has also explained some physics as well, like the fact that a compass only points to the next island on the equator, and how the only contient in the world is a line around the world, passing through the poles, and hasn't changed it.

Oda's invention of the devil fruits are really impressive. if you eat one, you get some strange and fantastic power, but your unable to swim. Many Characters in the Story have eaten Devil fruits, Like Luffy eating the Gomu Gomu (rubber) fruit, or Nico robin eating the hana Hana (can replicate limbs) fruit, but their powers are so varied and wonderous, that lots of people have wondered what other kinds of devil fruit there are. It really sparks the imagination like nothing has ever done, and huge arcs can go by without an encounter with a devil fruit, or they can appear within the same chapter, but all of the arcs can remain the same in pacing and fun.

My original gripe about the Cartoony style of art has quickly changed, mainly because it is so versatile and effective. Oda's art style can make you laugh at some scenes in one page, Like when they find out a fat old woman is actually a mermaid, Comically destroying Sanji's dreams about them, but make you cry in others, like when you find out that Nami's adoptive mother was executed by Arlong in front of her, or when Brook's crew play their final message to their old friend, but one by one they slowly die around him. Action can also be portrayed wonderfully in it, like when Zoro fights one of the CP9 agents and is able to finally slash him, but you can physically see the amount of power it generates, Or when Sanji battles with A strange lion-like man and turns him into jam with the amount of kicks that he does.

My general advice is to read the Manga to see if you like it. Many people can go their whole lives and not like it, but my honest advice is give it a chance, because it is a wonderful read. Or watch the Japanese Anime's, which are wonderful representations, and have expanded the world of one piece so much. But DON'T watch the english dubs, and i will tell you why in the next section!

One piece review concluded.

We cannot talk about a one piece review without a rant about how how bad dubbing is.

I can't finish that sentence. Its true, some companies do a terrible job when it comes to dubbing, but they are doing the best they can. so lets have a run through of some of the dubbing companies.

representing Hellsing, we have Dark horse. Dark horse have generally done a very good job of Hellsing dubbing, providing it with some wicked voices which are atmospheric and fit with the characters nationality really well. however, they are possessive bastards who hog all the stuff remotely connected with the anime, so reading manga chapters online (which i usually do) becomes near impossible.

Toonami are another representation of a company that do some good dubs but tragically shoot themselves in the foot for some major blunders. They mainly dub sports anime and fairly bloodless stuff, which is good for kids and its quite fun to watch. However, they often shorten the episode down to about 20 minutes, and for most animes there are episodes which are much longer and put in a lot of the back story, and cutting these down to 20 minutes seems to be a bit unreasonable.

One piece has had two dubbing companies, 4kids and Funimation, and i have beef with both!

4kids can be handed an award to the most ridculous anime butchery. From giving the character ridiculous voice actors (Ussop soundly like a clown on crack getting kicked in the balls, and Sanji sounded like a brooklyn cab driver with a cold) To terrible editing (posion suction cups that give you a tummy ache inside of old fashioned posion darts) to the removal of all things race related, Japanese or religous (and they put the frog character as french!) To bad writing (cutting three arcs out as well as badly re-writing the plot holes), 4kids do so much badly from it.

Now, your expecting me to celebrate the release of one piece into the hands of Funimation, because they generally do a pretty good job when it comes to dubbing. Well, not really. Granted that Funimation do a pretty good job when it comes to it, and did improve on alot of things, they did shoot themselves in the foot by having an all american cast. One piece is supposed to be sailing the world, and it's a very strange work if they all speak in convinent american accents. Oda himself says where he gets his inspirations from, one character was based on a french chef, and they make him sound like a cow boy! this may be only a small thing to get angry over, but at least 4kids had some variety in the characters voices.

end of review

Dragonball was the first manga I ever read, and at that time, it was the only swedish translated manga. I absolutely loved it, but now that I look back at it, it pales in comparision to mangas like bleach, one piece, naruto, Rurouni Kenshin (Is it spelled like that?) and many other mangas.

Hey Bixie, have you ever seen the Ninja scroll movies/series? I want a review on those! I only saw one part of the series before freaking out over how disgusting all the monsters were... but anyway, it's supposed to be a masterpiece.
Edit: I forgot that this thread is mainly about mangas, and I'm not sure if Ninja scroll has been anything but Anime.

Well, i have been requested to review Avatar (an anime series made by two americans), and i might get round to that... if you want to review Ninja scroll, then thats fine.

Sargeras (excuse the spelling), DBZ is by no means bad, its just shallower than originally advertised, and i get this complex whenever people tell me that somethings good, i get very suspitious about its quality, like the beatles, strawberry's and DBZ. the first one was ok, but the latter failed to hit the target.
