It doesn't get worse than this...

Second attempt is still a failure. While I did venture into the dungeons a lot quicker this time, I still encountered some serious problems along the way. I was pretty much taking over Dungeon towns pretty early, the first of which only had a pillar of eyes for a max level creature dwelling. However, subsequent dungeons were better equipped, the last of which still had the Dragon Cave, which meant that I was still too slow. I had 3 heroes with full troops going around to take towns, but when my best hero (Christian) went to the last town (which was guarded by Arlach) I was short by a step at taking over an unguarded town. Shortly after he arrived, Arlach came with his extremely large army and sat in the garrisons. Two attempts at beating him failed, so I went about claiming his mines and dwellings. He did not want to fight my hero (or maybe I should have just stayed further away).

However, after I claimed everything around that town, he decided to attack Christian, wiping him out in one attack (I retreated back to my home Castle to restock on troops. Luckily I saved all his artifacts).

Adelaide was out exploring at sea. I was quite late at this exploration because I wanted to hit the dungeons early, but the moment Adelaide got off at the other side, she was attacked by Malekith who seemed like a crappy hero with about 3 attack, 2 defense... except that he had about 18 or 19 power. His army was comparable to mine, if not smaller. But the moment his turn came, he used a lightning bolt to kill my archangel stack of 2 with 500+ damage. His 2 Ancient Behemoths (probably obtained from refugee camps) went about wreaking havoc on my guys. Just when I thought I was getting an edge over him, he Resurrected his Ancient Behemoths. I was forced to retreat as in the case with Christian.

My original plan was to leave Christian to hole up the last town while I got 2 more heroes (who stayed around collecting troops above ground) with Rampart and Tower troops to get to his town, and then take the town and defeat the hero in at most 3 attacks. My other 2 heroes had yet to arrive when Christian got attacked by Arlach.

Looks like I need another break.

Okay I restarted and played the game with quick combats and found it pretty easy to win…sorry although I didn’t finish the game as I got impatient chasing AI around.  Here are my suggestions:

You might want to restart the game…the map isn’t difficult but you took a little bit too long and attacked enemy in the wrong order.

First I noticed you have chosen magic guild lvl 3 as a starting bonus, if I were you I’d chose the second bonus (three lvl 1 magic guilds in all three towns if I remember correctly), the reason being: Christian and Jenova don’t have basic wisdom, it’s rather pointless to have lvl 3 magic in the beginning, but choosing lvl 1 magic guilds will make your castle development much faster, and save you precious wood and ore in the beginning of the game…however this is not critical as the map has plenty of unguarded mines and HUGE amount of resources, all guarded by weak creatures willing to join you.

For early castle development, I quickly build city hall in the rampart and tower, but not in the castle, I focused on building creature dwellings in the castle, aim for cavaliers by the end of the first week, don’t build the upgrades though.

I chose a magic hero (Astral) as my main hero, quickly level him up, get knowledge points whenever possible, gave him the castle creatures, had him head to the subterranean gate near the castle, once underground, I got spellbinder’s hat guarded by a hoard of harpies. Attacked the nearest Dungeon town and build mana vortex whenever you conquer a new town, with all fifth level spells it should be a breeze, don’t waste his movement points to capture mines or resources, supply him with chaining, and level him up ASAP.

You also need to prepare another (or two) hero(es) and have him sail across the sea at this point, try to do this before week 3 (or earlier if you can).Give him your best army as the last dungeon town can be easily reached through the subterranean gate located on the island to the east. This dungeon town is the hardest to reach from the underground so the earlier you attack it, the easier it will be.
Also I noticed you have town portal spell in you magic guild, but you haven’t equipped your heroes with it ;-)

Finally this map has plenty of unnecessary resources/artifacts that you don’t need. Don’t slow your heroes down because of them.

Hope this helps

Yep, thanks for the advice! I'll get around it... next time.

I know about the Town Portal in my Castle, but my heroes have either Wisdom or Earth Magic - I couldn't get a single hero with both of them. That made things extremely frustrating. As I've read that Might heroes are usually better, I tried to get more Might heroes than Magic heroes.

A lot of time was spent on having Christian go around and take towns while I got Rion and Adelaide to supply him to fresh, upgraded troops. Christian went down with average troops, but all unupgraded (except for Champions) and without the Angels. I got the Archangels shortly after and so ended up delaying his progress. I guess Week 3 into the dungeons is indeed late after all.

I think the way you are playing is fine, just sail across the sea earlier next time and attack it with your strongest army, because compare to four other enemy towns, the last dungeon town is the best developed also the hardest to reach through the tunnel. good luck.
