Not sure about that, actually, think with a week level 8 caster, the faction will benefit from a level 7 tanky unit. Also, since this faction doesn't have a lot of flying units, I prefer to have it "already" at level 6.

I have not really decided on this yet. It will be something magic, though, and it might indeed come out as something about Evocation and manipulation of spells.

I just made an account with the sole intention to necro-bump this topic with one suggestion, but first: Awesome thread. You clearly put a lot of time and effort into that magic system. It's almost overwhelming. Now then, on to business:

I hope I'm not committing some heinous act in bumping this thread up from page 5. If you were done here, I'm sorry, my bad. If you've already figured out what you were going to do with it, damn, too late on my part. If you don't see this post for a few more months and it sends you into a spiral of rage for whatever reason that ends in the fulfillment of a suicide pact, again, my bad. If my particular brand of humor is rubbing someone the wrong way, I'm sorry, guys.

His contribution is totally ok. I actually agree with the veterancy/experience thing. Eventhough Veterancy sounds cooler^^. Don't worry you've send nobody down a spiral of rage^^

I've got to say you have done a great job. I do not like the idea of the Rocs upgrades are both eletric. Possibly making it also go to Firebird and Phoenix. Also the some of the rivalries are kind of mixed up in my opinionI think the Bastion and Sanctuary should be rivals since they are both in the "aquatic" setting, and the Orcs and Dwarves should be rivals since its like David vs Goliath kinda.  Now all I want to see is creature stats HP and stuff like that. Also I am interested in seeing how with 8 units in each castle how many the hero can hold. Honestly with 8 units it should go back down to 5 therefore making you choose which to take and which to leave back. Anyway good job! Oh, by the way, spearmen, and polearms men are primarely used for defence so dont worry about changing it, trust me i know that stuff!

1b) Merge Ghost and Wight and take in Mummy, place Mummy at high level (level 5?) and remove the high-level Wight, instead push Lich up one level. This option is not a bad one, and could deffinitely work. My main gripes would be: a) Wraiths are pretty cool creatures to look at! I will sort of miss them on level 6/7; b) Necropolis will suddenly have 2 casters on level 5/6, which is probably a bit over the top, or alternatively, either Lich or Mummy has no spells, which makes either creature pretty dull.

2) Leaving out Mummies or Black Knights as neutrals. As I think the Black Knight fills a more relevant spot in the Necropolis army (offensive walker), I would leave out Mummy.

I settled for option 2), although I might go for option 1b) also.


Am I the only one who thinks mummies should just be upgraded zombies? think about it, they are preserved corpses with bandages wrapped around them. If you burn the bandages off of them, you get zombies. Just saying. ;P

Albeit this thread has been dormant for a while, the whole project as such is not dead, but between real life obligations, modding obligations, modding projects and gaming, it's just rarely that I find time to do something systematic about it, and at the moments, I'm sort of having 100 small pieces of ideas for skill systems bumping around in my head that I need to fit into one coherent picture - so be sure, when I have something, I'll come back to it.

Ok, let me try to post a few more things then. I will extrapolate on the concept of Alignment and explain how this connects with Magic Schools and Portefolios.


Alignment and Magic Schools
There are 6 different singular alignments as explained above, and each of these relate to a School of Magic. Factions will be most likely to specialize in schools of magic that match their alignment, but will generally not be prohibited to cross-specialize - however, spells in mage guild will match alignment, thus making cross-specialization more difficult (like in Heroes 5). Whether some schools will be prohibited for certain classes (possibly being replaced be respective Shatter Magic skills) is not finally decided yet.

The Schools of Magic and their corresponding Alignments are as follows:







Some of these magic schools will be rather similar to the current Heroes 5 ones, whereas some of them will be quite changed. I will upload details on the contents of the magic schools later.


Portefolios
Portefolios are a kind of "sub-alignments" - more specifically, a combination of two alignemtns creates a portefolio. Examples of this could be:

Good + Nature = Life
Good + Arcane = Creation
Good + Order = Community
Good + Chaos = Freedom
Good + Evil does not exist, as these two alignments are opposed and don't mix.

Thus, a portefolio is simply a smaller aspect of an alignment.

There are a total of 12 Portefolios, and these are:


























Magic Schools and Portefolios
As mentioned above, each Portefolio forms the common element between two alignments. The below diagrams show how the Portefolios relate to the different schools of magic.







As mentioned above, each Magic School has 4 related Portefolios (for example, Divine Magic has Life, Animation, Freedom and Community). The Portefolios will relate the the Magic Classes within each school - to take again Divine Magic as an example, this school will contain the following classes: Healing, Blessing, Transformation and Abjuration. Each of these will relate to two portefolios - for instance, Healing relates to Life and Community. This means, that factions with these two portefolios (for instance, Haven) will be more likely to have this kind of spells appear in their mage guild. Details on how this will work will come later when working more specifically with magic.

it is wonderfull i admit but some part of its is wrong i mean only the last pic.
nature and order gives us the most stubburn, solid element of existence: earth. i think everyone accepts that the opposite of it is air, chaotic and radical.
then; lawful and radical, hidden and regular, it is water i think. always has a shape but never its own shape.
and of course the last one, fire, chaotic and conservative compared to air, fire conserves its heat, anger, even background, history. air does not care
so, it changes everything if elements change. it is only my opinion about this brand new clever complex idea of yours. and forgive my bad english, it is just a review i made. it just did not seem right to me that way.

It's been a while, but maybe I should resurrect this thread a bit.

Been playing around with some of this stuff for a while, haven't worked on factions, but reworked skill system and magic system so that there are now 4 magic schools again. Instead, there is added a new group of combat skills to supplement the magic schools.

Think it's time to upload a bit of it.

The system three posts above is perfect. Logical, consistent, clear, playable, balanced. If I have a chance to work on Heroes (part 7? 8? ), I will do everything to push it through.

Yeah, it was a nice system, but in the end, there were too many Magic skills, which caused an imbalance in overall skills - so I ended up reducing it to 4 again.

About the Dragon Longing... it's nice idea, but since all the necromancers creatures are under his will... It's not really the dragon that attacks the living dragon, but the Necromancer is using him as weapon. Maybe only Liches, vampires and death knights are thinking for themselfes...

Dragons are powerful magical creatures, especially in the world of Ashan. It wouldn't be too unusual if a fragment of their consciousness remained even in their undead form.

Yeah but if they are neutral... under necromancers control they are like puppets...

thats why necro has this new slavery magic school, right?

And who is getting the freedom? Sylvan and Haven?
