haste,slow even magic arrow.

It all depands on map, what town youre playing and the opponent, there is so many variebles that there is no way to pick single best lvl1 spell.

For those who think that I chose only H/S/MA:

There are only examples, there are much more usefull 1st lvl spells. Bless, curse, shield and so on - most of them become usefull only with expertise in appropriate field of magic.

Even not commonly used spells like view eart/air on exper help you win the game. Those who use them know what I mean

yeah, I think those 3 are the top finalists...

as for me ... I'd pick magic arrow, only because I assume I always get it, and I get REALLY irritated of none of my scouts have it.

if i get EITHER haste or slow in first town, I'm content

My picks:

If in expert level:

1). Slow
2). view earth
3). view air
4). haste

A skilled player can make a good guess on the location of enemy towns given expert view earth (ya, no need for view air). The only good for view air (maybe the most valuable part) is to tell the location of enemy HEROES. So, I put view earth before view air.

Slow is better than haste coz expert slow will give you more time to manevour especially if opponent cannot counter it.

If not in expert level, why should I bother with them ?

of course, it depends on situation, but I'll say Haste, because it's good at all levels of skill and doesn't get replaced by better spells the way magic arrow does.

I mean, Slow is nice, but it's really not *that* useful unless you have expert level in it.

I'd like to say Bless, but it doesn't do much for some creatures - archangels, for example.

Magic arrow. That spell has gotten me out a lot of tight squeezes in early games and it is the PRIME reason why you build you mage guild on first day.

Yep have to agree there Shae ... I've played this level the other day ... in which I found the Helm of HE on the first day .. which made my magic arrow do a 100 dmg in the first week enabling me to clear out a large piece of the map early on

The logic is simple really when it comes to magic arrow.

Haste spell can be immediately reversed by slow spell. Same for vice versa.

Cure is a defensive spell only and will do nothing to diminish enemy troops. It's basically a way of negating enemy spells and therefore gets you nowhere.

Nothing is as effective as taking away enemy hitpoints for a first level spell. Nothing.

The one thing I like about Magic Arrow is that it's 90 percent guaranteed in most Guilds and you gotta have really bad luck not to get MA. Haste and slow are a 50/50 split for chances of getting them, but I usually end up with cure, view earth/air and summon boat and shield as the most common of level 1 spells. Shield I use only when desperate because I'd rather save those 5 spell points for a magic arrow somewhere...

I'm in a tournament game right now and I started with two towns, but neither of them had Magic Arrow in the mage guild.

That really sucked.

My top choices

1. Magic Arrow
2. Slow
3. Haste

Excuse me, but if you have MG1 level and no MA, you're going to raise the hue and cry while if you have no slow you will shrug and sigh and that's all. MA rules. Magic arrow is the essense of MG 1L. If you don't have it in the beginning in the game, shield or slow or haste can't help you, friends.

Of course, if we are talking about the first month of the game. If we take for example huge battles, I strongly soubt anyone would go for MA when they have mass haste or slow or shield or even cure! ~Dragon laughs~
