Town combos.

I've been doing a little bit of thinking recently, and I've noticed that most of us think that staying with one town type usually doesn't work out a whole lot, whether it be because of a lack of archers/flyers or very fast units or anything else.  So I'd like to know: what towns work well with each other to back up the other's deficiencies?

Im a Tower player and for me the best combo is Tower with Castle.

The main weakness of Tower is its low speed, but with Archangels (no MGremlins this time ), Cyra and Mass Haste Tower is Fast, and I mean it.

Tower and Castle sound like a great idea, and i use this combo too, except there are none of the previous castles in HOMM4.  Here are some other ideas (HOMM3) :

Rampart and Castle (archery and hand-2-hand power!)

Stronghold and Castle ( pure muscle )

Rampart and Tower ( defense galore )

any other ideas, please keep posting!

btw, what do you think is the worst combination?

Some of my opinions.

Castle: probably among the best well-rounded army around.  However, that missing 5-level spell is a drawback.  Tower compensates that in spades as well as providing an extra gem income for those 3-gem Archangels.  Plus, swapping Titans for Zealots sure packs an extra range punch.

Tower: Distinct lack of fighter troops is a problem, as well as Icon's mentioned lack of fast creatures.  Adding in rivals Dungeon combines Air and Earth magic to form a deadly Magic hero with Black Dragons and Titans.

Rampart: Fragile Grand Elves need archery backup.  What better than Cyclops Kings to replace the Dwarves and take out those pesky castle towers?

Stronghold: Three issues here: level 3 mage guild, only one flyer, and low speed overall.  Why not fix that with Rampart and swapping the Goblins with Gold Dragons?  However, allies Fortress could help with excellent scouting Dragonflies.

Fortress: Three issues here, too: level 3 mage guild (with Witches? yeesh...), low hit points in comparison with other towns, and only one archer.  If you want a straight-up brutalizing force, replace those expendable Gnolls and weak Wyverns with Stronghold tanks Ogre Magi (Bloodlust can only help the Hydras) and Ancient Behemoths.  For magic heroes, adding Tower is always a help, and throwing in Archmagi and Naga Queens will only make your opponent's eyes roll with disgust.

Necropolis: Problem with these guys are that every army you add in gets -1 morale.  Adding in Dungeon and replacing Minotaur Kings with Zombies ignores that and gives you two tank units (Vampire Lords being the other one).  Plus, two Earth specialty mage guilds help out to look for those all-important Town Portal, Slow, and Implosion spells.

Dungeon: Again, very solid troops without much tinkering needed.  However, getting a Stronghold and replacing Ancient Behemoths with the Medusa Queens is certainly evil enough to work out fine.

Inferno: Yeesh. You'd probably end up picking up creatures from any other town and thinking they'd be more useful.  Keep the Archdevils and the Pit Lords, and toss in whoever the hell you like. *LOL*

Dungeon and Conflux... Mainly because Dungeon let's you pick a hero (malekith I think) that starts with Armageddon, and Conflux has 3 creatures immune to armageddon.

Castle works with Necropolis too. Just get rid of Wraiths and Zombies and add Arch Angels and Champions or Crusaders.

Conflux seems to go well with anything ... including Necropolis.

My vote goes to Fortress and tower:

Titans, magi guarded by:
- naga queens
- chaos hydras
- mighty moos
along w/ wyvern monarchs and m.genies

or Stronghold / tower:

Titans, magi, cyclopses guarded by:
- naga queens
- ancient behemoths
- (ogre magi)
with T-birds and m.genies

worst combo (IMO): necro / inferno

You guys don't seem to combine troops all that much.  First of all, any other town's level 6 or 7 is an adequate substitute for another town's levels 1 or 2.  Particularly good town combos to have though are:
Any town and Rampart.  5th level mage guild, dwarven treasury, and I won't get sidetracked trying to develop its creatures.  Nope, the Rampart is the bank and nothing else.
Tower and Conflux...magic university for the Conflux and the super-stupidly fast Phoenix will definitely make your big bad wizards happy to actually go first in combat.    Note...Castle and Tower are terrible together.  Too many gems are required.
Inferno and Stronghold.  Why?  Inferno has got a pretty good level 5, 6, and 7 combo.  Make your hero Gundula and you've got an army that looks like this...Behemoths, Devils, Efreets, Pit Lords, Cyclops, Thunder Birds, and Ogres.  One ranged and 6 BAD hand to hand.  Plus, they don't have resource conflicts.

Stronghold is a nice&cool town, but only on S/M maps. Inferono .... I have some respect only for Efreet Sulans.

Never, ever will strong/inferno be a good town combo. The reason is simple, it has very few really good units like Ancients&Sultans (actually these are only two I can think of).

As far as tower playing pussies are concerned .... we shall meet

LoL Icon we will

But its kinda sad that u think that way. Archdevils are so underrated especially on an offense hero. Do you have any idea what Gundula and a Stronhold/Inferno combo army would do to a tower army under a magic hero? we will see.

Rychen:

I used to like Stronghlod.

A year ago (at least) I was playing a cool XL with lots of res/gold, quite well balanced, but not too much.

I had at least 4 strong towns, one fully upgraded, and I was the only person with Town Portal (lucky me).

I had such a huge army, I was sure of winning .... I could win just with my Ancients.

But I decided to play fair, I let my opponent buy his army and then we met. One huge battle - sometimes I like it that way, especially when Craig is my main.

He was playing Inferno, so he went first. Berserk . Opps I forgot about that. TBirds attack Cyclops. Ancients with one shot destroyed Ogres ... The rest is history.

Although thanks to cloning of Ancients I almost won. If I get morale boost once or twice ... but maybe I wasnt that lucky after all.

I only lost 6 games while playing Tower, and I consider my opponents good players. They play usually Dungeon, Necro, Castle. And long, long time ago Ive lost count of how many games I played

As far as devils are concerned. If they had greater dmg.

All:

The truth is that it is of no importance if this town combo rocks or not. All that matters is fun. I love Tower and I usually dont create combos. I preffer my 500 Mgremlins to any number of AA.

But again, there are ppl who enjoy winning. And they will play to win, even at the cost of pleasure. Fortunetely Im not one of them.

Rampart and Tower. Replace the gargoyles and genies with grand elves and dendroids (520 hps per week vs. 240). Such a combination is economically feasible since both the homestead and dendroid arches are cheap dwellings with no prerequisites other than the centaur stables. Three Rampart heroes begin with archery (Kyrre, Jenova and Ivor) and the Dwarven treasury is an excellent complement for the artifact merchants.

Well, there you go.  By letting your opponent buy his army, you just gave away the Stronghold's main advantage: ability to build big stuff quickly.

It's not "unfair" to attack before your opponent has all of their stuff. Some towns are faster to build than others, while others have stronger creatures. The faster to build ones obviously need to attack while the stronger towns are still building up if they want to win. That's what balances it. If you take that away, then you are throwing the game into your opponent's favor.

I'm with Shadow Phoenix

I've a special pride of Necropolis, but is a well known fact that zombies are one of the worst units in the game. Wraiths are a minor threat and almost any seventh level creature is better than the ghost dragons.

The combination you suggest sounds quite good to me. The classic Black Dragons (and his magic immunity) in the place of their ghosts, a good hand-to-hand fighter like the Minotaur King (one of the best designed units in my humble opinion, with that war armor) to deliver brute force side by side with de Dread Knights and a terrible unbalancing unit like the Vampire Lords to send directly to the throat of your enemies when they are weak enough to avoid regeneration.

The only doubt I have is about the Power Liches. They're damn good when forming part of a solo-necro army, but the risk to damage your own dungeon units needs to be considered. Having two shooters in my army (medusa queens and Beholders) and supossing I have a necromancer hero, I will replace them with skeleton warriors and let that stack grow and grow with the "work" of their army mates.

How about this alignment?

UPPER CORNER ---> LOWER CORNER

1.- Medusa Queens
2.- Dread Knights
3.- Skeleton Warriors
4.- Black Dragons
5.- Vampire Lords
6.- Minotaur Kings
7.- Beholders

The shooting stacks separated, the tank ones ready to defend them from close combat, the skeletons and vampires ready to take retaliations everywhere they're needed (at least they have their own means of regeneration) and the blackies dominating the battlefield, and set in the only place which avoids friendly fire. If someone has attacked your dragons with a despicable unit only to make them kill your own troops, you'll know what I'm talking about.

My dream team

Castle + tower seems to be a fantastic combo at the first sight but ONLY IF you got the resources. (AA, portal of glory and upgraded cloud chamber are IMPOSSIBLE to build unless you use cheat code. )

My dream team:

1). Conflux + tower
Speed + shooter :

No major resources conflict and one bonus, (damn, I just forget her name), the mercury hero for your phoneix.:

Magic university + more spells available

Two 350 gold heroes in conflux and 1 in tower for your expensive troops:

At the early stage of game, your MG + sprites + storm elementals + your spells can let you clear near every guarding monstars of mines.

Then you can build up your cloud chamber (but not upgrade it,....yet coz you may not have the $$$) and/or pyre. Let your fire birds do the works. Fire birds are one of the most cost effective troops and can be easily recruited. You can use them to conquer more towns and make more income for your expensive titans.

Now you have two choice of troops:
1) Magic + fire birds + elementals (storm + energy + magic)
for offense and tower troops for defense. This is especially effective against other magic heroes and in case you can't get titans

2). All shooters troops + 2 no-retar troops (naga + magic elemental)+ fire birds for initiative, with appropriate spell supports, it can be a nightmare of any town.

Oh, my dream.......

Well, castle + necro is also a good idea if you can get those lots of woods at the early stage.

Rampart + stronghold : Hmmmm, where is my crystal ???

Rampart + tower : good, treasury for expensive units, no major resources conflict, archery experts for shooters.

Just my opinion.

To sikmar

In great battles you don't have many probs with the lichs because you have a lot of undead troops so it is easy not to shoot any living person. But with a dread knight using skels instead of lichs would probably be best.
My line up:
Medusa Queens
Black Dragons
Dread Knights
Power Lichs
Minotaur Kings
Evil Eyes
With Mass Haste your Vampire Lords will, reach the other side of the battlefield in one turn and Dread Knights and Minotaur Kings will reach there sooner.
This lineup will be especially efective in town defence.
