The Battle for Middle Earth

Every time when I head to the store and browse through various electronic goods I see 'The Battle for Middle Earth Anthology' sitting on the shelf. I've scanned the back of the box and have been wondering for a few weeks now if it's any good. I figured, having scanned the last 10 pages of this forum , that surely someone would have already made a topic about this game...
Apparently not! So, I'd like to know, for any of you who've purchased said game, if it's any good or not? Worth buying? Good graphics?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

There are a couple LOTR based real-time strategies and I always get their names mixxed up. But if this is what I think it is, then it's not worth buying. Not that it's that bad, it's just not that good either - too easy, too short and not unique enough. There are far better games out there.

Graphics are good, everything else appears to be good on first inspection and after one game you wonder why you're still playing it, really.

Unfulfilling can't say why. Just is.

I actually preferred BFME1 over BFME2... Still not sure why.

I only had nro=2, and i liked that one. Cool graphics, nice sounds. Only downsides: Though AI and not much variety in both tactics and development

Just take the ring and let Galadriel/Sauron do the rest

The package thread-starter is talking about contains BfMe 1&2, plus expansion Witch King.

Games are decent, and can only be considered great if you are huge LOTR fan.

I have both BFME2 + expansion and I played it a lot, and for a long time it was my favourite RTS. Then I discovered DOW, which is ten times better on all things except graphics... (And maybe sea-combats?)
The thing about BFME2 which bothered me the most was the lack of strategy, sure there were some, like the usual "Cavalry beats archers, archers/swordsmen beat pikemen, pikemen beats Cavalry... But nothing in comparison to "real" RTSīlike Age of Empires, Starcraft and others. Anyway, afaik, younger kids like the game very much, probably because of the scaled-down resource system, which is very easy to learn. It also makes the game focus more on combat.

By the way, I played with Isengard

Overall game rating: 7/10, I think that's fair

Yes that was the other thing that I couldn't stand.

It was basically a rock paper scissors game that looks like LOTR

Fun if you like rock paper scissors....

I have battle for Middle-earth 2. Well graphic is good, but not graphic is most important thing in RTS. Fractions are balanced very good, although game isnt balanced when your opponents are dwarves and you are elves. (elves win with dwarves) If you like games like Medieval, war of the ring game modeis for you. In pure combat fight the game is nice, 6 fractions and lots of maps, also editor. But after some time game is boring because you every time have to use same tactics. And the most annoying thing is ONE KIND OF RESOURCE(S)!
I hate it because economy is only building mines, mines and more mines. Not like in AoE, you havent much technical inventions.
My rating is 8/10, would be 6 if no multiplayer
EDIT: Sorry but it's only RTS that my friend can understand. Other games he understand are Pokemon and Tibia - games where you don't need having high IQ to play...

Sorry for reviving this thread but I didn't found anything more recent.

I usually play a skirmish of Battle for Middle-Earth (1) everytime I'm too tired to start a 5 days match of Homm III. As a matter of fact, this and Impossible Creatures are the only two games outside the Homm universe I play regularly.
It has a big problem though, since it tries to write to the CD as anti-copy security it regularly gets screwed. I've bought it two or three times at lower prices already but now all I can find are absurdly over-priced used copies at Amazon...
Does anyone knows where I can download a pirate copy for free?
Thx.

There is an interview with an EA developer saying that he was a fan of command and conquer and those games are "serious",

however Battle for Middle Earth was just a "silly game about elves and dwarves" they made to "have fun"...

That says a lot about the problems of the game.

(apparently such developer was unaware of the massive influence of Tolkien or that it practically founded the genre of modern high fantasy)

I would say Battle for Middle Earth is only playable with total overhaul mods as otherwise it is a shallow game experience.

(also for one, I think the fortress mechanic and area control economy are terrible)

The pirate bay should have torrents.

Maybe, the problem is since the game is too old my searches can't find nothing. Too much stuff gets in the middle.
No one knows from any other servers?

Skidrow? From my experience, those guys have pretty much anything, but I can't guarantee it, as usual.

Thanks, I've found some links there but they aren't working. I guess the game is now too forgotten for me to find anything.
It was a terrible game that cheated to keep any challenge but I was used to it and find it funny to abuse his limits. I'll need to find some other thing to play, though.
