Reign of Terror (IC)

This RPG takes place in the future of Ashan and Homm5, a future in which the Necropolis faction was all but destroyed - except for one survivor, a necromancer of great power named Maarn. Maarn conquered all of Ashan, dominating the land with an iron fist and making slaves of his opponents. One rebel group, the Tchaida, oppose him. They grow stronger by the day, and eventually they will be able to vanquish Maarn and his Reign of Terror.

Summary of characters as of June 9:

Kaï: resistance fighter, Kaï is a powerful soldier and wielder (at least for the moment) of the great gem "the artifact" which gives the wielder near-godlike power for awhile, but drains energy of the wielder severely over time. Kaï is a paladin of the destroyed griffin empire and has the resistance army of the Tchaida and the knights at his disposal.

Naxxarus: Powerful and high-ranking lich servant of Maarn. He is an ex-mage who converted to necromancy to stay alive. He formerly had a great army of skeletons and dwarves at his disposal.

kemdil: resistance fighter/ mercenary, Kemdil is a skilled ranger (so he knows tracking, archery and nature magic). he is especially skilled at water magic, making him extremely dangerous near watery areas. Currently, he has a detachment of dark elves at his disposal. He can also wield the artifact, but the artifact spreads greater energy among elves(slightly different effect than Kaï's). He is the only axeothian.

NPC's:

Del: comrade-in-arms of Kaï. He's the cavalry commander and has a short fuse.

Vayrath: ex-dark elf commander, he was killed by the vampire Marlak and turned undead to serve in the ranks of Naxxarus.

Siladroth: new dark elf commander, skilled warlock. Has taken the place of Vayrath to lead the dark elves.

Kul-Thzir: bloodthirsty orc warrior, heavy infantry commander of the Tchaida. Has experimented with combining orcs and humans.

Helven: stoic, quiet Djinn-mage of the Tchaida, Helven is the only mage left after Maarn succesfully annihaliated the silver cities. No one knows how she survived. she only talks to people who are "intelligent".

Ghetta: siege expert of the Tchaida, Ghetta is the leader of the dwarven battalions who lack firepower, but are versatile. Ghetta is always in a good mood and knows the chain of command.

Marlak: vampire prince, Naxxarus's main officer. Remained loyal to Naxxarus even after Wrylkar's arrival.

Wrylkar: a mysterious wight, the new commander of what was formerly Naxxarus's army.

Ordom: general of the dwarves loyal to Maarn, brother of Ghetta.

Moltana: secretive, manipulative undead assassin 'more deadly than a dagger in the dark,' to quote Naxxarus.

This thread is showing great promise.  Keep it going. - Mytical

Kaï, an old paladin who survived the wars, rallied a small force of religious fanatics behind him. He took an emblem from his shield. He crossed over "Griffin eternal" and wrote "for the inquisition" and that became his quote. He resides now in a fallen nearly-destroyed fortress. W8ing, planning, plotting. He needs new recruits to face the necromancer's minions, but from where? He offered his inquisitor elite squadron to aid as Tchaida.

Later he received a letter stating that the untimely death of the former leader "Grimnox" has left an opening spot for leader and he was most qualified (Kaï suspected that he wasn't just qualified, but that u needed courage to become leader). Kaï laughed hysterically. He finally had a force worthy of the necromancer. He rallied his knights and cried:"For THE INQUISITION!!!" and took off to the new Tchaida hideout.

His trusted, veteran knights scraped together their few treasured belongings. They went their way to the Tchaida hideout, wondering what their lord's plans were with that bandit scum, called Tchaida.

I quote enamelity here: Kai's forces ride across barren wastelands of shadow and eternal dusk, eventually reaching the edge of an equally intimidating forest. Kai and his warriors are ambushed by a group of warriors cloaked in full-body black suits. Kai's enemies are outnumbered almost 3 to 1, but they fight in a strange style that allows them to slowly overpower Kai's troops.

How does Kai respond?

Here's my response: Kaï damned the fact that he didn't take his archers with him. He thought they could keep the small sunken fort as an outpost, but now he wished he could use them on this enemy to shoot them all down. He never saw those troops before. He did remember a battle report about the wars in Ygg-chall to see that they were dark Elves. His troops were incredibly strong and sturdy, but now he saw that this brute force would mean his downfall. He had no real fast troops. He yelled at Del, his most truested knight officer, to retreat his knights and try a flanking manoevre. Del immediately spread across the forests. Cavalry wasn't of much use in dense forests, anyway. Kaï grabbed his greatsword and ran towards the first dark elf he saw. An elf came to him, it's obvious what his intentions were. The elf attacked lightning fast with a very high accuracy. Kaï used his old defensive manoevres to halt the elf, but the elf anticipated his every move and even made a few hits. Kaï could not even try to hit him 'cus the elf actually used Kaï's own shield to avoid attacks. Kaï forgot his training and immediately smashed the elf with his shield in the face. It was the first hit to the elf and the elf was already KO. Kaï realised that these were no extremely powerful elves. They were just assasins who adapted to paladin techniques. He wasn't losing this fight 'cus he had poor troops, but 'cuz they were too disciplined to fight in a different way than they were taught. "FOR THE INQUISITION!!!" shouted Del and his knights rode in the rear of the elven formation, throwing their troops in disarray and allowing his heavy infantry to take a breather. Kaï looked around and was happy to confirm he only suffered minor casualties. The elves were slowly getting surrounded by infantry and cavalry forces. Now that the elves were limited in their movement, they weren't so dangerous anymore. But still, only on precise stab was needed to end the life of one of Kaï's men. Slowly kaï's troops came to a halt. Any further and there would be a bloodbath.

After a few minutes, The leader of the elven warband requested parlay. (negociations) Kaî wiped the sweat from his forehead and realised that they needed the Tchaida. The old tactics were becoming less and less effective. He ordered the troops to take a few steps back so the two leaders could meet in the middle.

I again apologize for confusing ooc and ic. Hope this thread stays alive, though

"I know of your little 'Inquisition' as you call it. How, you wonder?" says the elven leader. "Varlath, reveal yourself," he says. One of your paladins dismounts his horse and transforms back into his true form: that of a dark elf assassin identical to the ones you have been battling.

"He was my spy all along. But that is irrevelant - we are here to negotiate. My assassins and I were mercenaries under the secret employ of Maarn, but we abandoned him and now seek to kill him for reasons best left undiscussed. We would join the Tchaida, if we had not killed so many of them while serving Maarn. We need allies. You are the perfect candidate," the dark elf leader continues. He deliberately fails to mention the fact that if you join him, you will never be able to join the Tchaida.

Kaï became quiet for moment. He didn't like the fact that he was infiltrated so easily (he also wondered whether the "paladin" always was an infiltrant or that the elf "replaced" him a few nights ago). He also didn't like the feeling that the elf was holding back something. He was old and experienced enough in diplomacy to know whether someone was holding back something. On the other hand he realised that he needed allies, and a great network of elven spies and assasins were worthy allies, but then again, would he be able to trust them? He also knew that refusing might meant battle. And he couldn't afford too many losses, especially with potential allies. He also might learn something from then.

Kaï chose the lesser of two evils. He shook The elven leader's hand and said: "you are most welcome to join us." Then he raised his greatsword. His troops repeated after him: "FOR THE INQUISITION" the elves remained very calm under all of this and went along in Kaï's journey towards the Tchaida's fortress.

They turned out to be very helpful. They helped find shortcuts, the set-up of the camp at night etc. But the men (and even Del) were very uneasy around the elves. Kaï hoped this was only temporarily, but was experienced enough to know that some soldiers always pick fights when they feel tension(like small children). He prayed to Elrath that night, he begged Him for strength to defeat the insane necromancer.

A few days later, after most of your men have grown used to the presence of the dark elves, your advance scouts report that the Tchaida camp has been found - but it is completely ruined, razed to the ground, burned, and uninhabited. Some of your more distrustful men accuse the elves of betraying you and destroying the camp in advance. The dark elves do not show any emotion in response to these accusations or the devastated state of the camp.

Kaï gathered his officers (except the dark elf captain (who was generally accepted as an officer now)) He explained to them that, to have any chance of survival, cooperation was needed. Del suggested that we would beat up anyone who defied our rule, but Kaï saw that as something that would be against his principles. Kaï agreed to punish (in a mild fashion) those with outright hostility against the elven warriors (and vice versa.) Kaï knew that the Tchaida would be weaker without a leader, but he didn't believe that the fearless Tchaida would be completely wiped out in a matter of days. Kaï had no other choice then to go the Tchaida camp. All officers agreed that the camp would at least serve as a hideout (and maybe they would find some information there as well.)

Kaï's soldiers entered the "fortress" of the Tchaida. It was filled with rubble and ruined towers(picture Osgiliath in "the lord of the rings") and there were no clear signs of life. Some recent fires and bodies indicated the attack that probably happened 4 nights ago.

The atmosphere was grizzly to say the least. The troops were on guard. The elves remained stoïc as always. Kaï was about to tell Dell that he didn't trust this place and that they should retreat, when all of a sudden, people rose up from the rubble. They were surrounded by cloaked and hooded figures wielding crossbows (dark elf and the modern red griffin styled ones), throwing knives, longbows and some even wielded classical melee distancing weapons (like halberds, spears and greatswords.)

The elves had also drawn their weapons and didn't look surprised at all. Kaï could tell that the enemies around them were alive (i.e. not undead) and wore no uniform. They must be Tchaida (or extremely experienced mercenaries.) In either case he understood the outright hostility. If they were mercs, they had found the traitor Dark elves. If they were Tchaida, they had lured their arch-enemy (the elves not me) right in a trap.

Kaï drew his greatsword and shouted: "STAND DOWN!!!" The effect of this command was magnified by the 100 paladins/ squires repeating after him. Kaï braced himself for the attack. He hoped that they were reasonable Tchaida, but he feared the worst. 'Elrath, let my intentions be true, and my sword just' He prayed.

The chant repeated over and over again with increasing volume and determination by Kai and his men is ignored completely by the twisted, hunched-over men from the rubble. As they ready and aim their weapons, and all hope for survival seems lost, the dark elf officer silently steps forward and quietly utters a single word: "stop." Every single rubble-man drops its weapon and turns to face him silently.

the dark elf turns to face you, and speaks: "These are experimental test subjects created by my people. They were once human, but they have since been tinkered with. They are the failures of these experiments, cast out to live like wild beasts. They are still magically bound to follow any order issued by any dark elf. They are too weak to have destroyed this camp; I do not know how they ended up here. I propose we seek another rout around this entire camp, but I can see that my suggestion will not be popular among your men - you and your petty honor codes and such."

OOC: I'll be gone for awhile (could be 4 more days) so pls focus a bit more on the possible elven ranger, ty.

IC: Kaï was furious when he heared about "the humans" who hid in the ruins. He ran towards the dark elf captain and hit him in the face, hard. You could hear his nose break. "I'm sure that this isn't your doing, but I cannot allow any practices that even resemble necromancy to be tolerated, so consider this to be a warning! I'm starting not to trust you either. This occurence in the encampment could be just coincidence so I will give you the benefit of the doubt, but if the next encampment of Tchaida is razed to the ground, you are no longer welcome here." The dark elf was stunned. Kaï walked away. His temper was lowering. He called Del with him. "give the order, we will go straight through the ruins and request the good captain that he destroys the meat puppets."

Out of the corner of your eye, you notice the dark elf captain whispering indecipherably to his warriors. He responds to Del's order with a nod of acknowledgement, and he and his warriors announce to you that they intend to seperate from your camp in order to scout ahead and destroy the 'meat puppets' before your soldiers reach them.

OOC: Here I go. Let me know if I have to edit my post.
(Because I'm going to take a LOT of literary freedom in this post )

IC:

The young Elven Ranger was sitting down next to a human male. Of a tanned complexion, he is fairly young, even for an elf (or perhaps, especially for an elf). He reached for his drink, a glass of water, took a few sips, and put the glass back down on the table. He then started speaking:

"Thank you for the water, old one. My name is Kemdil, and I hail from a faraway place named Erathia. I'm sure you've never heard of it. Heck, I'm sure you've never heard of Axeoth."

The human, an old man of about 60 years of age, with white hair and tanned skin, nodded negatively in response to Kemdil's statement. Kemdil nodded and resumed:

"Well, it matters not. All you need to know is that I arrived in Ashan about ten years ago. Strange things have been happening over in Axeoth, and here as well. I've heard of sightings of creatures never seen in this realm before."

The old man interrupted the Ranger:

"So then, m'lad, why are you here?"

Kemdil responded:

"Well, it's a long story, and one I'd like to forget. Let's just say that I've lost many friends to get here, and I'm not here willingly."

The old man remained silent out of respect of the elf's wish.

Kemdil continued:

"So, what's been happening in the area, old one?"

OOC: Ok...I'll stop here to let enamelity check my first post out and also to find out what has been happening in the area. I'm in a tavern of a Haven town. As for the rest, that's up to you.

OOC: Good first post! Could you write up a brief character backstory?

IC: The old man explains that you have arrived on a continent once filled with hope and light, that was later corrupted into darkness. As Maarn's armies - the forces of evil - spread across Ashan, the community that Kemdil found completely isolated itself from the rest of the world using enormous walls and powerful magical defenses. However, nothing blocks it from the sea, so the villagers fish to survive. Until recently, they had sheltered a paladin named Kai and his Inquisition, before he left for the ruined fortress just northwest of the community.

Kaï let him go. He ordered Del to go outside the ruins so there would be cover from the flanks. He didn't care about the dark elf's anger, he figured that he would come to his senses. He did realise that he was dependant of the dark elf. Kaï suspected that he would hire new scouts or archer units soon or the dark elf would act out his revenge very soon. He prayed to Elrath for strength that night.

Great, Kaï thought. He proves his worth, he hopes he will be able to trust them again. He continues his journey through the ruins of the once great Tchaida encampment, he hopes he can find clues of the whereabouts of the Tchaida. If not they must go to the hq of the Tchaida, but Kaï fears that leading the dark elves there might be dangerous.

OOC: Thanks enamelity!
Well, I'll post some stuff in the following post. If you want me to post anything else related to background, let me know.

IC: Kemdil listens intently as the old man explains what is going on in Ashan. When he finishes, Kemdil stands up and says:

"Thank you again for the drink. It seems I know what I'm going to do now."

The old man nods as Kemdil leaves a silver piece on the table.

As Kemdil heads out of the tavern, he notices the walls that protect the city from attack. He can't help but chuckle at the fact that he didn't notice them before. He reaches the city gate and is stopped by the gate guard:

"Halt!"

Kemdil crosses his arms and stares down the human guard with his piercing green eyes. The guard flinches for a moment, and then continues:

"You should know that the countryside has been infested with strange and dangerous creatures as of late. I can't just let you leave like that."

Kemdil grins as he brushes aside his light blue hair and reveals a bow he has had on his back.

"I am well aware of the dangers in the area, kind sir. Now if you would please..."

The guard steps aside and allows Kemdil to pass.

Once outside of the town gates, Kemdil decides to take a moment to rest and think.

He had, after all, been through a lot.

Born in the outskirts of Erathia, he had lived amongst humans and elves, so he didn't feel out of place in either community.
At the age of 7, Gelu and Kilgor had their fated clash that resulted in the destruction of the whole world. Everything that Kemdil had known was destroyed in a matter of minutes.

He spent the greater part of the next 15 years in Axeoth, living amongst the many members of the Nature Faction. He made many friends...however, that was something he didn't even want to remember. Not because of the fact that those people had given him their friendship, but rather because they died as a result.

Kemdil has the ability to control water and ice almost at will, an ability that is usually a Vori Snow Elf trademark. He chuckles as he realizes how much trouble he caused people in his youth playing pranks related to the liquid element.

Kemdil snapped out of his thoughtful daze and went to a nearby pond. He then thinks aloud:

"Well, I don't really have anything better to do. I could go chase after Kai and his Inquisition. Then again, I could try to find out more about this Maarn character. Darned Necromancers, destroying Nature as they do..."

He trails off as he decides:

"Why not? At the very least, I may find some other allies along the way."

Kemdil starts tracking Kai's steps, heading for the ruined fortress the old man had told him about.

to Kai:

One of the dark elf scouts returns with troubling news: Maarn's warriors have set up a large encampment up ahead. Judging by the deep holes all throughout the camp, and the overheard conversations of the soldiers, they appear to be digging for something very important. No clues as to what it is or does are discovered, but it probably has something to do with elvenkind, as the Maarn's soldiers were seen brutally interrogating and torturing a Sylvan elf about - strangely enough - elven myths and legends.

to Kemdil:

Approximately halfway through your journey to the fortress, you encounter a Gharchu - a wild beast with large spikes protruding from its shoulders and features of both bears and wolves. Strangely, the beast is severey wounded, with one foreleg almost entirely missing. It limps forward before falling over, ready to die. You notice that its wounds and scars appear to have been inflicted upon it by humanlike claws, not other animals.

"What did this to you? These claw marks look like nothing I've seen before."

As Kemdil asks the question, the Gharchu dies. The Ranger offers a quiet prayer to the dead beast. As he makes to move on, he hears a rustling of the leaves to the left of his position. He realizes that he is in the middle of a forest, surrounded by trees, and easy prey for whatever killed the Gharchu. He readies his bow, just in case...

The humanoid moves toward the corpse with a hungry look in its eyes before noticing you. It turns to you with that same sense of hunger before charging recklessly.

Kaï expected Maarn troops here. He sent a footman to the outskirts of the ruins to retrieve Del. He ordered his troops into formation. The Dark Elf captain appeared. "Can't we just go around them?", he asked. Kaï looked back at him: "There is a man of the empire being tortured there and if the undead want something, we don't want them to have it." The Captain nodded. Kaï ordered the elves to watch the flanks and kill any soldier trying to escape. He could be taken into a pinsir move by the undead and the dark elves, but Kaï wanted final proof that the elves can be trusted.
