Baldurs Gate

Baldur's Gate, the first videogame to be based on the Forgotten Realm novels was one of the bfrist and the best RPG ever to be released.

In this thread  different Strategies will be discussed of Baldurs Gate and it's sequel, Shadows of Ahm .

The story of BG:

You are the ward of Gorion, a scholar from the library town of Candlekeep. You know Gorion isn(t your father and that when he moved to Candlekeep, you were already with him. On all other points, your past remains dark and unknown.

From your childhood fried Imoen, you learn that Gorion has had some fierce correspondency with a friend, who lives in Baldurs Gate. When Gorion asks you to meet him in front of the Librairy and announced that you are about to leave Candlekeep, you are attacked by two assasins, who you manage to kill easily. Totally shocked, you question Gorion about your destiniation and the purpose of the journey. Gorion's answers remain ambigüous however. Parting at nightfall, you and your guardian walk through the forests near the Swordcoast. In a clearing you are ambushed. The leader of the brigands seem to know Gorion and attacks the old man after a heated discussion. Gorion sacrefices himself to let you escape, and kills all the brigands except the leader who kills him. You escape, but are wounded.

As Dawn is breaking, you find yourself on the West road, which is, ironically, east of Candlekeep. There you meet Imoen, your friend, who witnessed the attack. She admits to have followed you, after nosing into Gorions correspondence. You and Imoen depart and head North-East, to the Friendly Arm Inn. Before you reach the Inn, You meet a queer old man wearing red robes and a pointy hat. He's seems to be very interested in you. Before you understand what's going on, the man departs. As your are looking at him, you blink and he suddenly disappears. As you and Imoen reach the Inn, you are approached by a mage in black robes. After asking your name, he suddely attacks but is killed by an arrow fired by Imoen. You and Imoen enter the Inn, where you're instantly recognised by a tall and boss Druid named Jaheira. she and her husband, the timid yet sympathetic Khalid,  Where waiting for you. You and Immoen decide to join them.

Jaheira tells you that she and Khalid will need to get to the town of Nashkel to investingate the neverending Iron shortage. The next day you arrive in the village of Bereghost, where yor party wants to sleep in the local in. As you enter the inn, you are assaulted by a Dwarf, seemingly without reason. Jaheira kills the Dwarf, and you discover that he was carrying a bounty notice, similar to the one founded on the mage who tried to kill you in front of the Friendly Arm Inn. The bounty notice claims that someone has put a price on your head.

You leave Bereghost and head for Nashkell, where you are, again, attacked by an assasin. After killing her in person, you go to the Temple of Helm where you meet the mayor, Berrun Ghastkill. Ghastkill immeadetely recognises Jaheira and starts a conversation with her, emphasising the need to check the Nashkell mines, which, for some time only produces detoriated Iron, which explains the Iron shortage. You accept to check it out.

In front of the barracks you meet an enormous Ranger, called Minsc. he seems to be talking to himself, but as you move closer, you notice that he's talking to a hamster named Boo, which was stuffed in a breastpocket. Minsc notices you and begins to shout at you, asking your assistance in a gallant quest. When you ask about the quest, Minsc, scuffles, but then tells you that he comes from Rashamen and was charged by the leaders of his tribe to take a "Dajemma", a sorceress, into his protection. But one night he and his Dajemma, where ambushed by Gnolls. Minsc was knocked unconcious, and his Dajemma kidnapped by the Gnolls. Taken aback by Minsc's tale, you accept to help him in his quest.

Then Minsc gets to buy himself a new sword (Me and Boo will kick some evil butt ! ), You are approached by a tall, slim redhooded wizard. Fearing another assasin, you draw you sword, but the Redhooded wizard calm you down. He introduces himself as Edwin a Red wizard from Thay, who was given a secret mission, but, as he grudgingly admits, he can't complete the mission solely. He tells you that he was send by his supperiors to find an kill an evil Wychlaran, a witch by the name of Dynaheir, who has been organising raiding parties from the Gnoll Stronghold. You assure him that you are already going to the Stronghold, but Edwin insists that he would acompany you, since Gnoll aren't easy foes. You accept and when Minsc returns the six of you depart to the Stronghold.

When reaching the Stronghold, some days later, you set up camp near a bridge. You gather around a fire and roast a deer that was killed by Khalid (as Minsc refuses to kill animals). Twenty minutes later Edwin and Minsc start argueing again. In the three day that Edwin and Minsc were in the Patry together, they've allways been argueing about something you couldn't understand. These arguements allways ended with Minsc retiring in his tent, and Ediwn muttering in himself. As dawn breaks your and the Party gamble an assault over the Stronghold. In the courtyard, you see some pits. In one of these you see a motionless figure. A Black woman, who is lying unconcious. Bith Minsc and Edwin see her and shout out at the same time "DYNAHEIR". The Wizard and the Ranger look at eachother in sheer surprise, while Jaheira manages to revive the unconcious Witch. Suddenly Edwin shout that you must kill the witch as this was the deal you made with him. You refuse. Edwin then furiously throws his dagger as Dynaheir, which narrowly misses. Imoen, undestanding the situation, exposes Edwin as a liar and a cheat, intrigueing them into a murderplot. Minsc hurls his sword at Edwin, which hits him in the shoulder. The Red wizard manages to teleport himself away from the Stronghold, leaving the party taken aback. Dynaheir, who is severly wounded is rushed back to Nashkell.

Dynaheir recovers quickly and as a token of gratitude, decides to join you. Jaheira now emphasises the importance of investigating the Iron Shortage, and forces you to check out the mines. You concord and By nightfall the party reaches the mines. Emerson the mineowner, informs you about the many adventuring parties which tried, but failed to find the evil source that poisons the Iron. Inside the mine oyu quickly learn that Kobolds are the source of evil, tohugh they sedom work alone. After travelling through the mine for several hours you sumble upon a hidden room. In the room you find a throne onwhich a Half-Ogre is seated. The Half-Ogre is initially surprised that someone managed to penetrate into his Throne Chamber and reveals to be Mulahey, leader of the Kobolds. He attacks, you but you can kill him. In a chest near the throne you find letters adresed to Mulahey, coming from a man called Tazok. In the letters a man named Tranzig is named, who appears to stay in Bereghost.

After reporting everything to mayor, who pays you 1000 gp in gratitude you leave for Bereghost. In the Inn you find Tranzig, who attacks you. severly wounded the mage tells you the HQ of Tazok, who is a bandit leader as well. You let Tranzig leave, who is never to be seen again. Whe you are buying supplies for the long journey to the camp, you meet the same strange old man again, who you met when you were travelling to the FAI. He introuces himself a Elminster, a friend to Gorion's a wishes you good luck on your travel. The he teleports away.

A week later you reach a forest named Larswood. When steeting up camp, you are suddenly attacked by Bandits, the same ones that serve Tazok. Before any blood is shed, you convince the captain that you want to join the bandits. Teven, the captain, takes you to Tazok, so that he can judge the party's honesty. Tazok, who doesn't believe you, attackes you and wounds you severely, but you seem not even to show the tiniest cry of pain. Impressed Tazok changes his mind and let's you join the Bandits. The he departs to Baldurs Gate, where he has some unfinished business to do. You take Tazoks absence for granted  and decide to seach Tazoks tent. As you enter the tent however, you are attacked by Tazoks minions. After killing the you free a Prisone named Ender Sai who tells you how he stumbled upon a clandestine mine in the Cloakwood area. In some chest near Tazoks chair you find documents that confirm what Ender Sai already said.

You depart to Cloakwood, where you find a Motte and Bailey on the fifth day. You enter the Encampment and have to deal with a band of powerfull bounty hunters, who where hired ot guard the Motte and Bailey. In the Bailey you find an elevator who bring you to the cloak wood mine. One of the miner sees that you're not the usual guard and asks if you are here to rescue them. After you replied truthfully, the miner asks you to got to the next floo and free the Dwarf Yeslick. "He'll help in your cause", he adds. You storm the next floor and free the Dwarf who tells you to kill the boss of the mine and Tazok's superior: an Elven Warlock named Davaeorn. Yeslick offer to join you, but you refuse. Instead Yeslick will evacuate the mine, while you are cleasing it. On the lowest floor you find Davaeorn, who is killed after a long and though battle. On his body you find some letters and a key; the key that will flood the mine. You read the letters and discover that the real bandits behind the Iron shortage are a Merchant Organization called the Iron Throne. You give the key to Yeslick, who floods the mines.

Baldurs Gate, the capitol of the Duchy of the Sword Coast, is you next destination. When crossing a bridge you are greeted by Scar, Captain of the Flaming Fist. After questioning you he lets you past, but asks you if you would meet him in the Flaming Fist HQ. When entering the City you meet Elminster again, who entrusts you that that Scar and the  Main Commander of the Flaming Fist, Duke Eltan, are trustworthy. You head to the FFHQ were Belt asks you to investigate the Merchant Organization of The Seven Suns. You infiltrate the organization, where you find the Main Merchant, Jhako, locked up in the sellar. He tells you that all other merchants are killed by the Iron Throne and replaced by Doppelgängers, shapeshifting monsters. You kill all Dopplegängers in the neighbourhood and report all this to Scar.

Scar says that his superior, Duke Eltan, wants to talk to you. Eltan, a venerable old man, orders you to investigate the Iron Throne. You enter the Iron Throne, a black and inhospitable tower. On the  thrird floor, you meet Emissairy Tar of the Merchand Fedration. When you reach the fourth floor an accomplice of the Iron Throne leaders mistales you for Emissairy Tar and sends you to the fifth floor to engage in the meeting. On the fifth floor you are attacked by Iron Throne Mercenairies. After killing them, you seach the floor. You find correspondency in one of the room to a Sarevok, the adopted son of the Iron Throne Chaiman, Rieltar Anchev. These letters reveal that the Iron Throne was behin Gorions murder and that the mleaders, including Rieltar, are in Candlekeep. In another roo myou find Emisairy Tar. She is murdered. You report this to Eltan, who teleports you to Candlekeep.

You walk into the Librairy and meet a queer, young man who call himself Koveras. He says that knew Gorion and gives you Gorions ring. He also tells you to kill Rieltar, who is situated on the Third Floor. After this he departs. Imoen and Minsc advise to kill Rieltar, but Jaheira convinces you not to trust Koveras and ignore Rieltar. On the fourth floor you meet Tethoril, who tell you that Gorion left a message for you in his room, on the night he left. Intrugued by the message, you run to Gorions room and read the note. The reveals that you and Savevok are sibilings. Moreover you and Sarevok are children of the God Bhaal, Lord of Murder. Shaken you leave the room, where you are arrested by the gatewarden.

In the Prison you meet Tethoril, who tells you that Rieltar was murdered and someone maned Koveras saw you kill him. A ring was found on your finger, that belonged to Rieltar. You are able to convince Tethoril of your innosence, who teleports you to the catacombs of Candlekeep, where you cas escape, without being noticed. In the catacombes you meet many old friends, who one by one turn into Dopplegängers. Some of these even include Tethoril, Gorion and Elminster. You manage to escape Candlekeep and head for Baldurs Gate.

There you learn that Scar has been assasinated and Eltan has become sick. The new Commander, Angelo Dosan, blames you for the murder of Belt and Rieltar, two crimes you didn't commit. Suddenly you meet a woman. You recognise her as one of the Bandits who slew Gorion. She introduces herself as Tamoko and proclaims to be Sarevoks partner. She tells you about Sarevoks heritage and his plans to become supreme duke. In this conversation the main storyline is explained. She decides to aid you, if you kill her rival Clytaemnestra, Sarevoks mistress. You rush to the Iron Throne and kill the mistress. You find Sarevoks diary on one of the chests. You head back to Tamoko, who tells you that Sarevok has let Eltan to be poisonned, thus killing the Duke of Baldurs gate. You storm in the Flaming Fist Compound and confront Eltans healer, who turns into a Dopplegänger. You kill it and bring ELtan to the Harbormaster, who cures him.

You head for the Dukal palace and enter. Sarevok is about to be crowned Grand Duke. You interupt and the noblemen who elected Sarevok turn into Dopplgängers and attack the two remaining dukes of Baldurs Gate. The Dopplegängers are defeated and you show the two Dukes Sarevok's Diary, revealing his heritage and ambitions. Sarevok the furiously attacks you but is almost killed and teleported away. You are teleported to the Undercity, where to Sarevok was teleported.

You are standing in a Maze, trapped in the Undercity. You must get out fast and stop Sarevok from trying to get Grand Duke again. You manage to escape the maze and find Wnsky, Sarevoks mentor, almost dead on the floor. He tells you that Sarevok build a temple of Bhaal in the Undercity and can be there. Outside the temple you meet Tamoko, who attacks you. You kill her and enter the Temple. There Sarevok, Tazok, Angelo and Semaj charge you. You kill them one by one and even Boo jumps out of Minsc's pocket and attacks the atagonists. After Killing Sarevok youself, you celebrate your victory. But then some noghts later, you are kidnapped by a mysterious force...

The End (?)

The Npc in Baldur's Gate:

Imoen: : Neurtal Good Human Female Thief
Statts: Str: 9
       Dex: 18
       Con: 16
       Int: 17
       Wis: 11
       Cha: 16

Imoen is the first NPC who'll join you in the Game. She's a very reliable thief and can (as the only npc) be dulaclassed. If you dulaclass her, make sure you do it in a mage. Imoens precense is a great help for the party. Her large dexterty emphasises her proficiency with Ranged weapons and she will hit enemies more often than other NPC. Her high Charisma makes her a fine candidate for Algerons Cloak or the Cloak of Nymphhair. However her strength makes her a rather difficult fighter and she can't carry much. It is best to dualclass her into a Specilalist mage early, since the Mage Class suits her more than Thief. Imoen is the most loyal NPC she'll never leave you enless you force her to. This behaviour also leads to Imoens lack of interaction with other NPC. Despite this Imoen is a very potent thief and a very reliable one

Jaheira: True Neurtal Half-Elf Female Fighter/Druid
statts: Str: 15
       Dex: 16
       Con: 17
       Int: 10
       Wis: 14
       Cha: 15

I'm not a fan of Druids in Baldur's gate I. Jaheiras main bonus is not the ability to cast spells that are by far inferior to the cleric's, but her bravery. In fact Jaheira is one of the bravest caracters in the game (meaning that she won't be panicking easily). She is also one of the funnier caracters in the game due to her exptremely bossy nature. Now the bad points: Jaheiras toughness, may compensate the average stength of a Fighter, but her Wisdom is overall inferior. 14 is too low for a priest. Jaheira is coupled to Khalid, so the only way to separate them is by death. Moreover Jaheira and Khalid are Harpers, and thus archenemies of Montaron and Xzar. She also despises Faldorn, so having both of them in one party is total madness. Jaheira is the person who dislikes the most carackters, both neutral and Evil. Jaheira get along with Branwen and Dynaeir especially. Jaheiras Neurtal alighnetement means the she'll complain abour go reputation ,but will not leave as long as Khalid doesn't leave. Use Jaheira as a healer, let her memorise many healing spells and unique druid spells like Entangle and Charm Mammal, and let the cleric learn the other. Despite all her faults one of my favourite NPCs due to her Bossyness and her early availability.

Khalid: Neutral Good Half-Elf Male Fighter

Statts: Str: 15
       Dex: 16
       Con: 17
       Int: 14
       Wis: 10
       Cha: 9

As Jaheiras Husband, also found at the FAI, Khalid is Jaheiras polar opposite. While she is a severe, impulsive and bossy matron, Khalid is a couchpotatoe. His harsh stutter explains his low charisma. Like Jaheira, Khalids statts should be redistributed. His Dex and Con are Higher than his Strength, this is intolerable for a Fighter. Another point or annoyance is Khalids guts. He is a coward. When engaged in melee versus a powerful enemy (like an Ogre Berserker). He almost literally wets himself. Khalid is more a backline Archer, than a frontline Swordsman, but still panick easily. His high CON mostly saves him from death, but that is not a garantuee. The weakest warrior IMO

(When panicking) : "Better Part of valor, Better part of Valor !!"

Montaron:: Neutral Evil Halfling Male Fighter/Thief

Statts: Str: 16
       Dex: 17
       Con: 15
       Int: 12
       Wis: 13
       Cha: 9

Montaron and his partner, Xzar are Zhentarim: a little, mysterious organization that is the polar opposito of the Harpers. Therefore He and Xzar can't stand Jaheira and Khalid (who are Harpers). Having both teams in one party could end in bloodshed. Usually I pick up both pairs and then rush them ot Nashkell, where I drop oen pair and proceed with the others. Montarons straength is quite unusual for a Halfling; it is Sixteen, which is good for a Fighter and Exquisite for a Halfling, who have a Strength penalty. However, the Halfing bonus in dexterity is not enhanced her, which is regrettable. Having Imoen and Montaron in the same party is interesting. You can dualclass Immie if you like, because Montarons thievong abilities are adquate enough for a party. Another thing of Caution: Montaron and Xzar hate eachother; when one of them die the latter strickingly happy (leading to humourous expclamations). Keep in mind that Montaron is vulnerable 15 Con is too low for an Multi-class Fighter.

Quotes: "Oh, I warrant your attention ? Frabgereous day, kaloo-kaley !"
        "Arrrrrrr"
"Leave me be, lest yer head leave yer neck !"
       "What part in 'I AM A LONER" don't ye UN-DER-STAND ??!!"
(when Xzar dies): "And the mad Wizard falls ! Hehe, saves me the trouble"
(with high reputation): "Ye goodie-goodies makes me all sick !"
(with low reputation): "Effective... I might not kill ye alfter all..."
       "Got suck yer blade"

Xzar: : Chaotic Evil Human Male Necromancer

Statts: Str: 14
       Dex: 16
       Con: 10
       Int: 17
       Wis: 16
       Cha: 10

Xzar is,  as Monty's companion, a Zhentarim and thus an enemy to Khlalid and Jaheira. Xzar is definetely insane. He has some weird outburst, like telling he ate someones liver (see quotesà and that he though poeple to suck eggs. This aspect is underlined by Montaron; who calls him the "Mad Wizard". Xzar's statts aren't impressive, but his Dex and  Wis will help fighting these annoying Sirens. Dex also makes him a good knife thrower. However his con ls medicore, and his hp are a lowly 4 or 8, depending if you'r a multiclass, or not. Necromancy is not the best school to specialise in, because the school has the least spells (the Necromancy spells are the usefull in the game though). The great flaw is that Necromancers cannot learn Illusionsist spells, like Mirror immage or Blur, which is a great disadvantage in battle. This makes Xzar very fragile. Not bad, but I would take Edwin instead.

Quotes: "I ate his liver with a nice Chianti, and some Fava-beans"
(Retarded voice) "Durh ! Tell me about the raa-bbits !"
(retarded voice): "I-I'll teach yer grandmother to suck eggs !!"
(little girls voice): "Stop touching me !!"
(little girls voice, panicking): "Mommy !! I'm scared !!"
(little girls voice, wounded): "Mommy !! I not feel to good"
(sounding insane): "Those the gods wish to destroy, the first make mad, mad, MAD !!!"
(with high reputation): "Do we have to be ISSUFFERABLY charitable ??"
(during nighttime) "I would like to have infravision, like the Elves, but it's a pity of just taking their eyes,..."
(Whe Montaron dies): "Montaron !... I... never loved you !!!"
(Tired): "I tire! I am much more AGREEABLE with rest!"
"Montaron, you are so AGGRAVATING !! It's desturbing to my demeanor !"

Kagain: Lawfull Evil Dwarven Male Fighter

Statts: Str: 16
       Dex: 12
       Con: 20
       Int: 15
       Wis: 10
       Cha: 8

Kagain can be found in the house on the left hand side of the Feldeposts Inn in Bereghost. This Dwarf's key to victory is his constitution, which is one point higher than permitted. This allow Kagain to regenerate 2hp per hour, making him a welcome addition for an evil party or in early game. Kagain is obsessed with gold. When you meet him, he'll be running a shop in Bereghost specialising in guarding and locating people. He'll ask you to join him to find a noblemans son, but if you see a raided caravan, Kagain swiftly changes his mind. Having Kagain and Yeslick in one party is not a good idea; Yeslick despises Kagain, while Kagain thinks Yeslick is a moron. Kagain relationship with Garrick and Branwen is horrible as well, but this only leads to small bickerings. Kagains strength is an acceptable 16, making him even more leathal. Kagain and Kiva are the killer combo to eliminate Ogres. If he gets wounded, he'll regenerate most hp during nighttime.

Quotes: "If I could get a copper for every moron I encountered 'till today, I could buy Baldur's Gate !"
(when attacking, whispering) "For the love o' money."

Garrick: Chaotic Neutral Human Male Bard

Statts: Str: 14
       Dex: 16
       Con: 9
       Int: 13
       Wis: 14
       Cha: 15

Some people aren't fond of Bards, since they mostly have meager statts and are the most difficult to give them good ones. I must admit that I'm fond of Garrick. Garrick can be found in Bereghost, I front of the Burning wizard and will join you if you met and killed is mistress (who is a high level Bard, who fires lightning bolts at you so beware !). Garricks demeanor could be compared to Yoshimo in BG2, but Garrick is more carefree and trustworthy. Garrick gets along with Branwen and Jaheira, but can't stand Kagain and Eldoth. Be carefull if you place these is one party. Garricks dex is decent, 16, but his intelligence is way too low for a spellcaster (13). 45% Of the spells that Garrick tries to memorise, will fail. His charisma should be higher too, not speaking of his CON, which is very low, but not that annoying, but still more important than wisdom. Overall, if Garricks statt were redistributed (str:12 Dex:16 Con:10 Int:17 Wis:9 Cha:16 ), he could be kept in the party till the end, but I think you shoudl swap him for someone better during mid-game. In BG2 Garrick has a cameo when he tries to seduce a paladin of the Order of the Most Radiat Heart (of which Keldorn and Ajantis are members), but fails each time.

Quotes: (Panicking): "Brave, brave Sir Garrick, brave Sir Garrick led the way! Brave, brave Sir Garrick, brave Sir Garrick ran away !!" ( a parody of Sir Robin in "Monty Python & the Holy Grail" )

Minsc:: Neutral Good Human Male Ranger

Statts: Str: 18/93
       Dex: 15
       Con: 15
       Int: 9
       Wis: 6
       Cha: 8

Minsc is by far the most popular NPC ever created. His legendairy comments like "you point, I punch" and "Butt-kicking for goodness" have travelled around the Glode during the mid-nineties. Minsc also possessed a hamster as legendairy as himself, called Boo, whom Minsc claims to be Giant miniature Space Hamster. Minsc is like Xzar insane, but he is not evil. He is a good chap, who deffinately had too many blows to his head. Eventhough Minsc is a Ranger, He is the best fighter in the whole game, with a Gargantuan str of 18/93. This stength makes Ajantis, Kivan and even Shar-Teel look weakish. Though he's the best in melee, keep in mind the Minsc is vulnerable to magic, with the low Int and Wis he has. Minsc is coupled to Dynaheir, who must be rescued durnig the ten first days with Minsc in your Party, otherwise he'll attack you. His coupling with Dynaheir also disables the ability to combine him wit Edwin for more tha ten days, after which it probably will be Edwin the one who will be ending up dead. Minsc can throw himself in a berserking fury, thus completely obliterating the enemy, after which he'll attack you. Stay of of his neighbourhood when he is berserking, otherwise the game might end prematurely.

Quotes: "Butt-kicking for Goodness"
       "You point I punch"
       "Squeaky wheels gets the kick"
"Evil beware ! I'm armed to the teeth and packing a hamster !"
"Fool me once: shame on you. Fool me twice: Watch it I'm huge"
"Stand and deliver so that me hamster can have a better look at ye"
(when berserking): "Fear not ! I'll inspire you by charging blindly on !!!"
(When attacking): "Go for the eyes Boo, GO FOR THE EYES !! RHAAAAAGH !!!"

ps: Minsc is voiced by Jim Cummings, who is the voice of the Amarican "Winnie the Pooh". In Bg2 Cummings also voices Firkaag the Dragonn who will say 'Oh Brother' when you right-click on him.

Branwen:: True Neurtal Human Female Cleric

Statts Str: 13
      Dex: 16
      Con: 15
      Int: 9
      Wis: 16
      Cha: 13

I admit, I'm a fan of this Vikinglady. Is it Branwens scandinavian accent, her quotes, her avatar ? I don't know what I fancy about her. Branwen can be found a the Nashkell Carnival as a statue. Nearby her a Halfling thief named Zeke sells a Scroll of Stone Form Protection for 500 gp, which can be used to revive Branwen. You don't have to buy it for almost the double of the price though. Let Imoen or Montaron pickpocket him, or if you want to do it the nice way, buy another scroll of 225gp at the Temple of Helm. This makes Branwen the only NPC that will join you for money. Though nothing is remarcable about her (decent wis and good dex), Branwen can be very lethal. If you have Faldorn or Jaheira in the party, you can let them memeorise healing spells, while Branwen can memorise Command, Remove Fear of Bless. Branwens Command is partcularly usefull versus the Ankhegs Noth of the FAI and versus the Siren on the Sword Coast. THe who petrified Branwen, was Tranzig, who you'll have to fight in chapter III, though Both Branwen and Tranzig don't seem to recognise eachother.  Branwen is a faithfull and Trustworthy warrior and, like Minsc, will never panic. To top it all: Branwen can cast spiritual Hammer 3x day, thus obseleting the need of equipping her with a magical weapon. Branwen gets along with Jaheira, Shar-Teel and Garrick quite well, but dislikes Quayle and Eldoth.

Xan: Lawfull Neutral Elven Male Enchanter

Statts: Str: 13
       Dex: 16
       Con: 7
       Int: 17
       Wis: 14
       Cha: 16

Xan is the probably the most famous and notorious NPC after Minsc. He can be found at the Nashkell mines, east of Mulaheys Throne Room. At first Xan doesn't seem remarcable in any way. The you click on him and he says "we're all doomed" immedeately stating how travel with Xan will be. Xan questions everything, including your orders in the most dire situations. Being very depressed and depressing, Xan also provides the games most memeorable quotes. Having him and Alora in one party must be fun (Athough I haven't tried yet ). Xan has a moonblade that only he can wield, but as his CON is dramatically low, he'll probably die before he can strike the enemy. Xans basic hp (3) confirm is fragility. Xan luckily can cast Mirror Immage and Blur, so he has more longevity than Xzar. Cha and Dex are good, so if you gert hands on the tomes of Dex and Cha, Xan would become a very good NPC stattistically. The major flaw, apart from his Con, is his inability to cast Evocation spells, thus making a rather useless adition to the party. I'd hire Xan for the fun factor, but ditch him for Edwin or Dynaheir, depending on your alighntement.

Quotes: "We're all doomed"
       "Life is so hollow"
       "Our quest is vain"
       (when recieving orders): "Whatever."
(when recieving orders): "What's the point ?"
"Let us all save ourselves the effort and just lie down and DIE"
"I'll do what I can, but expect very little"
(when attacking): "Hmmpf, Onward !" (muttering) "...to futility."
"Sunrise! I'm amazed to live to see another day"
" With you around I feel that we almost have a chance !"
"We delude ourselves by thinking that our pitiable band will stand up agains our enemies!"

Edwin Lawfull Evil Human Male Conjurer

Statts: str: 9
       Dex: 10
       Con: 16
       Int: 18
       Wis: 9
       Cha: 10

Edwin can be found at the Bridge in Nashkell, not far where Minsc is standing. Unlike Minsc however, Edwin's motives to find Dynaheir aren't as benevolent. Edwin is a loner; he himselfs thinks that he is a genius, while the others think he's an arrogant tart. Because of his disdainfull and rude demeanor, he has become one of the most popular NPC is BG. In the sequel however it gets even better . Edwin rudeness is appreciated by Viconia and Montaron only; all the others  dislike for him. Edwins statts aren't impressive at all, de facto being very weak. Edwins secret to succes is his amulet (that only he can wear). He cans it "a memento to my glorious period of service with the Red Wizards of Thay". Even so the amulets gives him 1 additional spell per level, doubling the specialist mage spell bonus. Edwins intelligzence is also the highest in the game: 18, allowing him to memorise 9 spells out of 10. Edwin is a fine addition for the mid-game especially and is a must for the Evil party.

Quotes: "Again you disturbe me !"
       "You are so irritating"
       "WHAT IS IT NOW ????"
"Elminster this, Elmister that ! Give me 2000 years and a pointy hat and I'll kick his arse !"
"Please, do not disturb me when I plot to overthrow you..."
"They live under the illusion that I care at all."
(when attacking) "Your worthless lives end here"

Safana: Chaotic Neutral Human Female Thief.

Statts: str: 13
       Dex: 17
       Con: 10
       Int: 16
       Wis: 9
       Cha: 17

Sultry Safana can be found on the northern Sword Coast map (the one with the lighthouse). I can her sultry as she almost constantly seduces the males in your party, especially the sympathetic Coran (quizically she doesn't seduce Ajantis). Before you can recruit Safana however, you must enter the cave in the North-West of the area and defeat the Flesh Golems inside. Flesh Golems are though, don't do this before you reach level 3 or you'll be squashed. Safanas statts aren't spectacular save her Dex, his is acceptable and her satisfactory Charisma, which obseletes the use of Algeron's Cloak. She's only the third best thief statistically but, if both Safana and Imoen are in the party, you can upgrade Imoen to a Mage (I prefer Illusionist). Keep in mind that Safana is vulnerable in early-game, with her average 10 Con.

Quotes: "Between two Evils, I choose the one I haven't tried yet"
       "Yes, Dear"
       "Of Course Darling"
       "I feel so sensual"
       "I'll do anything"
(excited) "yes, YES I'll do it"

I used to play Shadows of Amn but I never beat it because it's just so damn long

Character progression is one of the best I've seen in any RPG though you become so ridiculously powerful towards the end, especially since I played a Sorceror...

It's old (10 years) but definately worth playing if you like RPGs.
Just a straightforward D&D RPG (no aliens or guns or anything ridiculous) but one of the best.

Even though it's 10 years old graphics really aren't an issue. The game looks great in 2D, kinda like H3 and 4..

Actually I like lame graphics in older games to some extent.

Today, 99% of games use the principle of making you go "OMG THIS IS SO COOL" when you see the great textures and shadows and water reflections and then make it impossible to notice that the game itself actually sucks balls, has as much originality as an average seaweed, and you need a NASA supercomputer to play it.

Back then, graphics were secondary, and completely subject to the awesome gameplay and storyline.

You will never again find RPGs like "Baldur's Gate", "Arcanum" or "Icewind Dale" created. Because today it's easier to hire people to make shiny graphics than to actually think up a decent plot and combat system.

Pity.

I see that we reached a status of mutual Understanding

I agree fully. The newest pcgames can't fascinate me as much as the older games (like Heroes III, or Baldurs Gate). LONG LIVE THE OLD WAYS !!!

I'm pretty sure i assembled Power Armor and Tesla Rod from Fallout in BG2 .
But since only like 0.01% of people did that i guess it can be called straightforward D&D

It is one of the rare games i don't mind spending money on.

I had me an adamantine golem too .... just the look of that in the party was so cool, neat weapons as well, but wasn't all powerful by any means

I loved Icewind Dale, sure the story was weaker than BG, but the gameplay was a little more frenetic, what was taken with one hand was given back with the other

What? My Favorite Thread!

Good times......good times. I shall never forget the time I spent playing Baldur's Gate. Was a good time in my life. All I can do is thank the people who made it over and over.

And yes....Icewind Dale wasn't so good. Take away the storyline and you leave the gamer expecting better graphics OR ELSE!
