Civ IV

This cathegory has a civ III Topic, but not a Civ IV topic. A very bad thing. But not Anymore

My favourite civs are: Orignially: Fredericks Germany (PHI/Cre)
and Louis XIV's France (Cre/Ind)

With Warlords and Beyond the Sword: Huanya Capac's Inca (Ind/Fin), Tokugawa's Japan (Aggr and Pro are very strong together) and Charlemagnes Holy Roman Empire (imp/pro and very cheap courthouses)

So what do you think (about Civ IV ) ?

I think Civ IV is a strong contestant for the best ((TB) strategy) game ever. With the expansions, it seems to find all the best parts of the previous chapters and combine them in a beautiful blend, leaving out the bad parts. Resource system ... brilliant. Tech tree ... very well designed with only a very few "dead" branches. Great Leader system ... great. Culture system ... great. Religion ... Still in it's first version, but a nice addition (although Holy buildings are grossly overpowered). Civics ... nice step up from old versions. Economics ... great. Leader traits ... great. And best of all: It has a "no war" option. So much good stuff in this game!

Well CIV IV is a great great game, spent a bit time on it, and I will return to it at some time later.
Obviously there are better and worse civs/leaders, but Celts would be total crap if not for Boudica, and are worse than anyone else.
I play only BtS recently(indeed broadened gameplay), but prior to warlords Quin Shi was a powerhouse. Now it's not that easy to judge, but if you like conquest victories, either go quechas or go preatorians (Incas or Rome). From new options interesting are Darius (can get hoards of commerce - Fin/Org), also HRE (Charlemagne is mediocre, but their UB owns , and UU is very good). Also Sumeria can be good, same reasons (leader not so good, but great UB (courthouse at tech level of temple!!!!) and powerful melee unit).
I personally like most Hannibal with his Carthage, Toku and Frederick as person above, as well as Victoria (surprisingly, I made my best scores with her), and Ramses, both Romans, Hammurabi and Mansa Musa.
And yes, all the improvements and new concepts prove extermely playable. I know a lot about this game and I still can come up with something new. Also every game is unique and you never know what porblems your civilisation(thence you) will have to face.

I have the best results when playing Creative or Imperealistic. My playning style is all about Culture, Expansion and Diplomacy, rather than Warfare. I usually win through Cultural and Diplomatic victory.

I really dislike Organized and Agressive, I never use them, except when playing Tokugawa in BtS (Agg-Pro is a kick@$$ killercombo !)

Btw Civ IV owns III

If you like cultural wins so much, try either industrious or philosophical . Creative, paradoxically, doesn't shine exceptionally here. However, it's useful for domination wins .

What's wrong with organized? +100% courthouse and factory production speed is very useful, and with big countries, the slash in civic upkeep can save a lot of money.
And tell me, why Toku shines only in BtS? He was not changed since warlords, just samurai received drill I ...

You exaggregate a bit, III was a very good game anyway, but I admit, I prefer IV.

I already played both. Phi/Cre is my fav combo (Pericles rules)

Augustus is also very good with Ind/Imp *kiss*

About Toku: The AI sucks with Japan in the original game, which is usually a bad sign. I just can't play with organized !!! I usually sell my techs to allies for ridiculously high prices (that's why I prefer diplomacy; in combination with Finacial it will be tripple more usefull than Organized)

I must say that Fin/ind is the most powerfull combo in the game (objectively)

My fav combo is Cre/Phi

But the ones I most succesfull with are Imperialistic/Protective (HRE) and Spi/Cre (Egypt)

Civilization 4 is simply an amazing game. From the most basic things, like the music that gives such of a suitable atmosphere, and the amazing portraits of the leaders, which is just fun to look at them and to watch them, all the way to a great and enjoyable system, that challenge you. You have to balance gathering army, advancing in technology, having a developed culture and religion, etc. It feels like Civilization 4 covers all the aspects. I've never played Civ 3, but I did play Civ 2, and I can tell that the aspect of the culture is missing there, while here it's all accomplished to the last tribe. The Great people is also an interesting aspect, the gathering of resouces, and the nagogation with other leaders. Isn't it fun to see furious Saladin making faces to you, or Cathrina slapping you when you offer something rediculous?

Too bad I gave it to my cousin and haven't seen it since then.

Don't overrate charlie... note that HRE's UB and UU are what makes it a powerhouse, not the leader.

As to fuuny parts, the greeting lines of leaders may be fun, my favs are Catherine's (), Hannibal's and Ragnar's.
Also Gilgamesh and Augustus are fun with their cute open arrogance .

I just played an huge archipelago game with Portugease. It went fairly well until  1700 AD. I hadn't gotten horses, ivory, iron or copper.

I won one aggressive war against Kublai Khan somewhere around 50BC or so with catapults and warriors against swordsmen, axemen and spearmen.
Collateral damage FTW!
And defended succesfully against De Gaulle in 1000AD or so with explorers only.

Navy played a big part of course but it's damn annoying that enemy galleys can cross ocean and we can't. Nevertheless I sunk more of their ships than I could count.

Well anyways around 1700 AD Ethiopians decided I had to go. Well I did manage to sunk their galleons but a landing party made it to shore. Well that cavalry kinda ran over my narrow empire from south to north.

Usually I play Catherine and huge terra.

Let us all rejoice and sing Kumbaya tiogether is sooo funny when Monty says it. Ironicaly he's always my first enemy.

Revived!

You guys have to admit that Cyrus and Montezuma rocks. I really like the spiritual ability(no anarchy FTW). And, the IMperialistic one is really awesome too. is there any leader (non-GtS) with Spi/Imp?

btw, anyone played that chinese mod(that one with fireworks in the background)? I like the teal faction. But the people in handan is always starving .

Edit: Yeah yeah, I know that I'm a civ noob.

I played Civilization II: Test of Time - it was not good but I loved it anyway.

Years later I played Civilization IV and fell in love all over again. Then they made Warlords and it got better! Then they made Beyond the Sword and it got better still! The people over at firaxis are GENIUS!

I usually play as Joao II (Exp/Imp) of the Vikings or Incas.

I like circumnavigating early using triremes with navigation I from a trading post. Then, with the circumnavigation bonus, when you get caravels you OWN the seas for the next 300 years. Quick movement decides most battles on the seas IMO.

Also, Quechua ROCK! Especially if you like Great General units; Combat I really helps because it saves you more than a whole experience level in some cases. Importantly, this bonus carries when you upgrade the unit - which is not true for most other unit specialties.

My favorite victory was the one where I won by x3 Legendary Culture. That game, I convinced my southern neighbor to become my permanent ally (PWN), and at one point had so many Vassals I had half the world's population voting with me in the UN. Also, about 15 game years after winning by culture, I won the space race.

I love the music. I pulled it out of the game files so I can listen to it on my MP3 player. Nadda, Why don't you just marry the poor bastard already!?

The only game I played more than Civilization IV is Final Fantasy X (I played that game so much I even got Wakka's sigil in Blitzball).

Then they made Civ IV: Colonization and I'm like *facepalm*.

For those that like to play an aggressive game, the best choice is probably Boudica: one Free promotion for almost every unit, AND units promote faster!

I also like Charlemagne. He has a very quick early-game (Hunting => Scouts => Exploration, and Mysticism => Religion early => Early Income => Early expansion!)

I agree completely! Every game that I found Buddhism or Hinduism, My empire grows without limit. Every game that I don't, it rains fail sauce. Founding a religion is my #1 priority.
