It's not fine to enslave someone's soul to your own cause against their will.  Undeath is more of a cursed existence than just another way of life so it's understandable that other factions despise it.

True, but just raising skeletons is alright, just using bodies that noone else is using.

The Necromancers are not evil.
All they're trying to do is to restore balance and order, the ways of Asha. And what better way to find peace and order than death?
Concerning raising hords of undeads... A dead body is a dead body, it's better to use it for something good than to just let it rot. Although binding souls to for example, a dungfly is really evil, they only do it to their enemies.
From what I know, most of their armies comes from Heresh itself. When their people die, they gladly offer their bodies to the Necromancers.

Necromancy isn't evil nor corrupted, it's the purest of all magical arts. That the wizards hate necromancy is quite stupid, throughout their whole history they've been curious and experimental (Orcs anybody?), they're simply jealous.

We're all seeing things from different perspectives, even the ways of Asha can be twisted into something completly different.

Since we're (or should be) discussing the Necropolis faction in the Heroes series, not just Heroes V, I think it's okay to post examples from Heroes III.  Heroes III and Heroes V have essentially the same ideals too, so there's no contradictions.

Quote:
Heroes III AB
"I-I was farming and my wife was out picking berries with the children."  He closes his eyes to squeeze out the images and breathes deeply. "Th-then we were beset upon by a wailing none of us had ever heard before.  Frozen in terror, I watched as these ghastly things flew towards my wife and children."  He sobs, unable to speak for a moment.  "Then I ran and ran and ran.   Never looked back.  Mortimer found me two days later.  But he's dead now, or at least sort of.  He walks, but does not see or hear that we are his friends.  He killed his own son!"  The man finally breaks down completely and sobs like a child.  This was worse, much worse.  Reports from the others confirm your worst fears.

Quote:
Heroes III AB
Stumbling onto your path is a young girl.  Her dress is torn and tattered, and she is half starved.  Bringing her food and water she wolfs down the offering.  Her story is a brave one, as she counted the numbers in the garrison while hiding from the scouting parties for several days.  Last count there were five men on large, black horses.  Ten had glowing staffs, and there are twenty of the bloodsuckers.  There were thirty-five women in rags with glowing eyes and could float.  Fifty of the slow moving, rotting corpses shuffled around, with one hundred of the skeletons in broken bits of armor.  Once done telling her story she begins to sob uncontrollably, relieved to be out of harm's way and away from horrors a child should never witness.

???

Quote:

Heroes III
"As time passed, the Necromancers, trying to reach their goal of a perfect resurrection, slowly drained all the life around them.

The closest the Necromancers have come to a resurrection is the creation of the Lich. The Lich itself is not evil - it is merely the attempt of a mage to keep himself alive after his death by *trading* his life for his own resurrection. Far more sentient than the animated Zombies or Skeletons, the Lich retains the abilities of its previous form, but must continue to feed on life to survive.

Today the nation of Deyja, barren home of the Necromancers for nearly a millenium, continues to grow like a cancerous scar in the heart of the AvLee. The elves have been unable to stop this slow spread of lifelessness, nor has any other nation even tried. No war has ever been declared on Deyja - even if the Necromancers were completely destroyed, the land is uninhabitable."

I have to say this: I HATE ARANTIR(just to say it politely) Let's look through history.

fase 1: The academy was founded (mild wOOt) there, evryone could learn magic (again mild wOOt)

fase 2: Someone thought that the only way to control real magic, was to know EVERY aspect of magic (you all know where I'm going with this)

fase 3: some genius thought of death magic(I'm exaggerating a bit, but it kinda went like that, right?)

fase 4: A VERY big part started learning death magic.

fase 5: ppl started to think of ways to prolong your life using magic. (I have a faint feeling that souls are involved one way or another)

fase 6: some people felt that they were gods (overpowered and spoiled mages)(THATS RIGHT, not every mage is a noble scholar)(I mean, if you could destroy an entire city with RELATIVE ease, u would be mad with power too)(Off course they got mad with power. Try going mad without; noone listens to you)

fase 7: this philosophy got very popular and the very integrity of magicians got threatened. (That's when "the cleansing" started)

fase 8: The griffin empire understood that these "new" mages were dangerous, so the inquisition started.(along with the wizards who respected life)

conclusion: From the very start necromancers were evil. I admit that some ppl who became necromancer had good intentions(raising a loved one(I cal it the frankenstein theme)) But let's be honest: despite everyone's "point of view" I think it's safe to say that everyone with no respect 4 life is evil. And I don't count Arantir as a necromancer (he's a dark priest at most) And I also want to clarify that I love the necro's, but if u want to generalize them, generalize them as evil.

Demons are full of fire and passion. They destroy for revenge.(See Kha-Beleth: I'm a prisoner, even when I'm not in chains. I always like to get even.) They destroy for no apparent reason, but it is the reason for their existence. Their fire drives them. They also serve out of fear for their lords.

Necros live only to lengthen their life. Into infinity they drain/destroy life of others to lengthen theirs. They don't cower of turning their ennemies into slaves/mindless puppets (just like demons) Necros are generally more selfish

but one can argue that there are good necros and no good demons (forget Agrael, he only became good 'cuz he fell in love with the other side. If he never saw Isabel, he would've remained a cultist and tried to destroy the empire)

So in short: demons:hate, passion, revenge, meaning of life; necro: cowardice, fear of death, curiosity

My teacher once said: for an excellent (generally philosophical, but that is pushing my bounds) question there is no straight answer. Only personal judgement will resolve it, and reasoning has it's limits. So Nurul, I have to say it was a good question
