i have been on-and-off reading irvine welsh's "a decent ride", about a scottish cabbie who makes the sexy with more women than anyone should be able to in one lifetime and not be a porno star. it makes for interesting reading, because most of it's written in how you can imagine scottish speaking(i've never been to scotland, so i don't know. i can only go off of "trainspotting", which is also welsh's work).

the book pretty much is like reading a t.v. show: not much substance, but vaguely entertaining nonetheless.

i much prefer "trainspotting" to this book, but whatever.

I've nearly finished Steinbeck's "East of Eden". That guys is an artistic expression junkie. When I read "Of Mice and Men" I got the impression that he can't (or don't want to) deliver reported speech very well but the said novel kicked me back in the face. Maybe he goes too artistic from time to time but as a whole the style is very memorable.

just opening up "doctor sleep" by stephen king. it follows the storyline of "the shining", where danny grows up and ends up helping a girl with the most powerful telepathic abilities danny's ever seen. he(according to the book jacket) has to help her as she is being chased by a somewhat-immortal cult of people who slowly torture to death children with telepathic abilities, in order to extract some power from them which comes in the form of steam(not unlike how "it" feeds off the fear of children to stay immortal itself, only through "gooey tears").

sitting down with nearly a pound of strawberries, cut and cored, with cool whip to dip them in; for a reading snack.

I'm reading - actually nearly finished - "Carrie" at the moment. It's like a rough copy for all the later King's novels. Still, very easy to read, like all of his books despite their other qualities. It has one big problem though (some spoilers follow, get cover under the rock you've been living if you have not even watched the movie(s) or read the book) - Carrie's mother. Given that she's central to the whole story, King went too far in depicting her as a overly zealous cuckoo while at the same time failed (or actually didn't even bother) to explain how come she even let her daughter go to a public school where all the filth she fears and hates with religious conviction flourishes. A picturesque character but not a very realistic one and that somewhat undermines the immersion.

Finished Abercrombie's "Best Served Cold" a few days ago. As with all of his books - very easy to read but also a bit too pompous. It's probably the most expressive novel in the First Law world and from literary point of view probably the best but suffers from lack of likeable characters (Monza is probably the least likeable of all, and she's the center of the story...) and some of them don't feel very logically developed. Some of the twists were nice though, didn't quite expect them. Outside of the trilogy, I'd place this one above Heroes but below Red Country.

Now reading "Dracula" by Bram Stoker, allegedly the full version (after the first release in XIX century). The story has been spoiled by the numerous adaptations but not quite. So far it's a very good read.

Yes, I’ve always liked 19th Century novels in the form of letters, Dracula is no exception, one wonders if some modern social media version of it can be pulled off, but people post much shorter now, which changes things.

Does comic books/novel hybrids count in this thread?

I recently ordered Monstress. There's quite a buzz around it nowadays and it already netted Eisner and Hugo awards so it's the real deal.

In short it's a monster inside (literally) dark fantasy full of racism, feminism and furries. And drama. It sounds like an explosive concoction, but it hits a few notes that sound interesting to me. Especially it's premise: a mix of Western storytelling with Far Eastern aesthetics.

Plot appears to be quite straightforward (racial wars, inequality and exploiting others), but it's the art that really does stand out. And world-building. I only hope there isn't too much #metoo agenda (main characters are all women it seems, and the fictitious society it matriarchal). I'm not against as long as it doesn't blow out of proportions, as it might be the case with anything morality-related. I only hope the buzz around this isn't related-only to recent hot topics if anything else.

Does anyone here have some opinions on the series? I will probably add my opinion when I'll have a read...

Reading a small novella called "All Systems Red". It's a Kindle e-book. Science-fiction. Kinda entertaining so far.

Monstress is solid.

Dark, brutal and doesn't hold back with the punches. It feels very familar, like it was one big combination of some popular works that I like. I see elements of Berserk, Princess Mononoke or even Fire Emblem (especially the art style reminds me of the Wii U series, plus one of the races is similar to laguz) in it. I can find so many similarities to other works that I really wonder how many of which I know are also known to the authors.

It does not reinvent the wheel, the plot (so far) isn't even that great, but it is put together very nicely. And the art is really captivating, like manga on steroids. Some shots are breathtaking, the artist is really talented and knows quite a lot of styles. Plus so far I don't see any obvious signs of political/social justice expressions, even though one of the authors seems to be pretty active in the subject.

The moment I've heard about it I was certain it would hit the right tones with me. I'm not disappointed. If someone is looking for an interesting comic read, you ought to give it a chance.

Just reading Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff, actually the first of a series, and it redefines the FORM of books and how stories can be told.
I can recommend this as something very special.
