About English release - everything is stated clearly in the first post of this thread. Read it, please.

Your posts are a big part of the problems from this thread Hobit. So why keep on trolling.

This is what everybody is reading since moths on the first page:

"Version 1.0 has been released to the public, adding the Cove town to the game and a short introductory campaign, but this build currently exists in Russian only, and can only be installed on Heroes of Might and Magic III: Complete. An English version is underway and is expected soon, and further versions are planned to enable compatibility with WoG and the ERA scripting system"

edited march 2012....

That is why everyone is asking when the release will come. So answers like read again or Soon(TM) are not helping.

I have updated the first post to make it clear that information about an English release will be posted when such information becomes available.  Now there is no more excuse for ignorance.  I reserve the right to delete further posts demanding release date information without notice.

How did HoTA team make the new maps? I mean, is it very difficult? Is it possible to make a map with the normal editor and then change the file to include the new buildings?
Or is it really hard and there is no way to make new maps easily until the new map editor is launched?

For an average player like you, I'd suggest waiting for the official editor. There is a relatively easy way to make maps with the new objects, but they most likely don't work correctly, using the vanilla H3 editor.

It CAN work correctly via changing maps' code (hex digging etc.) and that's how probably HotA maps were made. But if you know how to do it without bugs, you can make a completely new map editor by yourself.

I was checking out hota.acidcave today. I've seen that the translations of the heroes' biographies have been done.

I like to see references from M&M universe. For instance, it's great to have heroes from HoMM2 as Astra. I remember that I saw some pictures of Agar and I think that other HoMM2 heroes, it's very nice. Heroes' stories saying something about AvLee, Regna or Erathia are very good. I notice the team efforts and the result is superb.

It is possible to have many reference about pirates in M&M world, mainly in MM7 and MM8, but I'm afraid that the other cities (Kronverk and Cathedral) don't have so many references so it would be more difficult for the team introduce their backgrounds in HoMM, but I bet that HoTA team will do a good job again. However, I would like to see even more references about HoMM2 and MM games.

I wonder why translations take so long. It shouldn't be hard to find someone who is good at russian and english and it's willing to do the job. Translations should take way much less time than graphic, scripting and mapping work.

It's hard. Don't forget the work is free and so only HoMM fans might be wanting to do it. And among homm fans peoples who can make a quality translations are very rare.

You first got to translate the stuff from Russian to English, then proof read the translation, see if the syntax and writing can be tweaked so it has style and fluidity, because nobody likes literal translation.

And you gotta do that for everything, all the new units, heroes biography, new dwellings, artifacts, events, map locations, the scenarios and campaigns, both the missions descriptions and the in game text. Then find someone to voice the speeches during the new campaigns intro and outro videos.

Then you've got to add it all into the game code, then test the whole thing over again to make sure every line of text, every description, event and biography is at the right place, you don't want Agar to have Archibald's biography, artifacts to have different powers than what their description says or missions to make neither head nor tail because the text is at the wrong place.

And every new feature added to HOTA bring this kind of workload to everyone involved in the translation, so it's probably a good idea to wait 'til the project is mostly done phase one and they begin to work on phase two before attempting this kind of thing.

It's up to you. Do you want quality writing that's on par with the rest of the game or do you want some shoddy half baked translation someone whipped up in an afternoon? Because I sure ain't interested in the latter option.

You are right! We prefer not to be able to play the russian version. Waiting another year is also a very good option, t y.

^Pretty much this.

HotA team makes a lot of focus on quality - that is one of the reasons they took several years to finally release the first version.

With that on mind, english version can only be expected to take a long time.

People simply doesn't have enough patience T_T

And ultimately, it's their release that depends on it, if the translation is shoddy, the press and players are more likely to dismiss it as some half baked amateur mod rather than a worthy follow up and expansion to the old game, and skip it altogether.

Yes, I admit, I have no patience, so I played it in russian and finished all avalaible campaigns. I have some minimal knowledge in russian, but far to be able to translate. But the issue is more that no friend want to play the mod with me, because they don't know russian

Too bad for them they can't play such a simple game in foreign language.

Seriously, it's not that hard to understand standard no-story scenario in foreign language. Make them at least try.

Hmm, you seem to have little idea on why players keep playing such old game. It is not about new towns, or new graphics, 99% of veterans do not care about adding one more town, they care about getting an unique challenge, and this include well done maps or campaigns and comprehensible story which suggest and suits the strategy to use. A new town is a bonus to previous requirements, not a goal.

I know tens of genius chinese maps which I even don't dare to try, because unknown language. Or many russians one, worth to play for sure, same. But everything has to be inside, story and adventure, the new graphics we can admire from screens too.

Then you have those who want to see the new town. They will play it a few days, then will move to another game. Because playing heroes does not really interest them, they just look for the latest eye candy.

It's about gameplay. With best story ever but no game at all, it would be too similar to visual novels. And visual novel can't be named a strategy game, so I'm afraid not so many strategy veterans keep playing visual novels.

Story of course is good and very important, but believe me - you can play a game which doesn't have one. So I'm afraid story isn't the best thing about H3 or any of HoMM series. Except Heroes Chronicles, which isn't as popular as H3. Or H2. Or even H4-6!

Yes, I agree. Besides there are basically two types of players. The ones that like scenarios and stories and the ones that go straight to random maps. I've been playing the game for years and there are some campaigns I haven't even begun to play. I wouldn't recognize them if I see them. The optional random templates of HD mod is far more important to me than any scenario, campaign or story.

Yes, but you still need creatures descriptions, new artefacts, dwellings on map. Very few like to play blind.

I will jump on HotA campaign as soon as english is out. For now, I won't play, save and reload each day just to visit an unknown dwelling to see what it does, then memorize. It kills the fun.
