In Russia this will not lead to violation. It's sufficient only to mention him as author of source picture.

Nope. More obvious example: can you upload book written by someone else if you mention its author?

In cases like this image usage can be qualified as "fair use" but this depends on situation.

Who allowed author to modify Heroes 3 at all and add something to it?

Fun fact - and this is actually allowed in (most of?) post-soviet countries Situation in EU and USA is less clean so not sure about that.

You're free to make modifications to software that you own IF you don't redistribute copyrighted material like game executable.
Quote:
If he wants to do something DRMed

DRM != copyright.
DRM - technologies that limit usage of some content (e.g. CD checks)
Copyright - concept that gives author right to determine how his work can be used.

For example VCMI source code is copyrighted but has no DRM.

By the way, law forbids distributing modifications also: so WOG/ERA are violating laws in Russia

Nobody wants to claim copyright. In this case we are talking about forbidding use of artwork - so it's about limiting users.

So Hobbit just now violated laws, posting this screen here? Get the criminal!
In Russia online libraries are permitted (didn't interested about situation last year altrough), so if you upload book, it will be ok, I think.

But book is bad example.
THis screen can be used to make some images or to rework it into town for H3. So you don't simply upload book, you add some new parts into it or delete bad chapters. And in Russia this will be new copyright objects, protected by law as source picture

Are we in Russia? Are you in Russia?

Stanford and HotA in Russia

Quote:

Since when does Stanford's townscreen use anything from Heroes 3? For me it looks like 100% original work. And, as far as I know Rusha, it IS 100% original work.

Not Stanford screen. Stanford team wants to modify Heroes 3. And to ban modifying their modified parts.

And what technology he used to block copying?
Copyright allows him to say that (for example) no-one but he can copy this image. He does not need to use any DRM to legally block copying.
Quote:

They're not. There is no difference between image, book, movie or computer program in terms of copyright.
Quote:

In all countries this will be called "derivative work". This will indeed create new copyright but it will also preserve original copyright as well.

Anyway this is clearly off-topic - keep HotA thread for HotA.

So you're outside Russia, but you want to violate copyrights because you think that you can violate them in Russia... Strange logic, and pretty dangerous to say the least.

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. If they released Stanford as a mod, nobody would give a snow what would you do with it. But before that, Stanford's townscreen shouldn't be used anywhere without author's permission. Simple.

Why this deduction? I am living in Russia.

Difficult.
Why their screen cannot be used? They are above law?
In Russia there are collective rights management companies.
If you want to ban someone use of your work, you must exit this organizations (you're in by default) and protect yout rights by your finances.
Don't think Stanford creators have money for advocates and searches.
Altrough don't think somebody wants to release some mod with their screen parts.

Is a matter of respect, look in dictionary to get the definition.

Of course you can take that Standford screen and use it as you wish. But when author asks the others to get their way around and not use it, usually the active/experienced modders -the ones who know how much work it takes- will respect his choice.

Maybe this is so.
In ex-USSR the saying is known - "art belongs to people".
This is no some commercial painting for museums. This is artwork for H3 modding. So to hide It and ban from using is ugly. It's like "I do this for H3 modding, but you can't mod it".
Authors don't live in space, don't get education only by their money, didn't write Photoshop by themselves etc. (some of HotA crew use pirated Photoshop/3DMax and proud of it - I experienced it on DF2 forums).
So it's about morality - if you don't get money for it, you must not behave like scroodges do.

PS You are talking about respect. But some of HotA crew laughs on Grove, calls Preserve "Frankenstein town" etc. Why respect, if they don't respect other works "cause they suxx compared to HotA"?

Ok, there is so much fuzz about it. We will not get to nothing.
So let better talk about Stanford lineup.

I think they are boring,
http://heroes3towns.com/?town=stanford&page=arts
And I don't know any mythology they are based on.

I think is more about work in progress, the author wants to release town and shows town screen at first. Would be weird if someone is using it before the town being released. Personally I find that town screen very nice as postal card, but have a hard time to imagine what kind of creatures could fit in. I think it fits very well for a Civilization game town. There is one thing drawers forget, is the straight visual relation between a town and map adventure textures/terrains.

Not that I could do better

And there is too much contrast and pixels are visible.
And this brown color also is not in standard resources.
They will need to add new terrain also for this town to fit on adv. map.

i have been quietly following this thread for over a year now and this addon to the game is quite amazing. I really like the new cove town and wanted give my appreciation for this addon and the work you have done.

However i have a question. Can we expect to see the other new towns anytime soon or will we have to wait a few years?

Would really love to give the kronverk(spelling?) and cathedral towns a go but as it seems now you want to make campaigns etc for the new towns before releasing a new town at all? is there any chance you will release the towns once they are done so we can play them ?

Anyway great work and looking forward to more from the Hota crew's work!

Forge will come out with probability of 90% (I think it's about halfyear-year).
Then will be produced Cathedral.
Other towns are exist only as ideas, or don't have anything except town screen draws and will come out never (I think so)

I thought some kronwerk units (like dwarfs) were animated, am I wrong?

They are in DEF collections for a long time.
That means they are no longer needed, because there is no town.
Officially all works for Kronwerk are frozen, ready units are published (at least several).

I'm sure this has been asked somewhere before, but:

Why won't you guys share your modding expertise with the rest of the community? Your addition of new material without the use of WoG is truly amazing, and could benefit tons of other modders as well without hurting HoTA one bit.

For Dwarven Town you should remade Fotress from HV without Dragons. All units are Dwarves and their Rune magic.

There's a big chance that kronwerk has a progress too. Alex-ander works effectively and simultaneously on many towns [kremlin for wog, forge, cathedral and even kronwerk] and we all know how stubborn russians are. Of course the focus is on forge [possibly the next new HotA town].

and seriously guys? are you still talking about copyrights....?
